Adding demo content to the phone? - HTC Radar

Hi, I just bought a HTC Radar and when I was doing the factory reset, it shows the following text:
"we are adding demo content to the phone, this process will take a few minutes and cannot be interrupted"
Is this normal? What demo content?

OEM Apps I guess.

I dunno, I have "updates" in my People hub and texts in my messages already. And after I plug the phone in for a while it begins to show some WP7 animation on the screen.

Sounds like you got a stollen Demo phone then from a store.

I was afraid of that. I guess I'll have to contact ebay and see if I can get my money back

You can reflash it but yeah you have hot merch.

The seller on ebay replied to me. He said I have to download zune software and then connect the phone to my computer. Then I can register my account on the phone and set it up.
Is that something you do w/ all windows phones or just gen 1 devices? I thought gen 2 phones can receive updates wirelessly?

No you have to use Zune. Go ahead and try that and see if it works if not then reply back.

Hi. I have the same problem. Phone is a demo version and keeps bringing up the same message and re-setting the phone to its original demo state.
I've downloaded Zune but can't really work out what I am supposed to do in there once the program is installed?? Any ideas??

Coming from Android here... what does FFU and nbh mean?

And any ideas where to find a tutorial on how to do either for the HTC Radar??

Hi, I have a Lumia 710, a friend bought it for me in europe (he has no idea whatsoever about phones), but I have the same issue (demo content installs itself). I just tried to install new firmware with Nokia Care, but demo content keeps installing.
Is there any particular ROM I should install to override that? Or any specific ROM for Nokia/Lumia phones?
Would that work? I didn't know this would happen, I feel like I totally wasted my money

Good lie to tell T-Mobile for brickin my phone

Well, i ****ed up my phone.
Trying to bring it back alive failed, so I'm going to bring it
back to T-Mobile.
Does someone know a very good lie I can tell them, so I don't have to pay for the repair.
When i try to start my phone, i see a HTC splashscreen, and thats it. Normally it start with a T-Mobile splashscreen. Can they see i tried flashing my phone, or is that an assumption they make.

I did the same with my Vodafone (UK). I just told them I'd hard reset and this is all I can see on the screen (don't get stroppy etc).
Mine will be back Tuesday, warranty repaired.
Vod UK use an outside repair centre so will probably be the same as T-Mobile if you are in UK. Mine needed a new motherboard, but there is a bit of a shortage in the UK (too many bricks???). I guess it depends on the outside service centre contract whether they charge you or T-mobile (and maybe also because I had warranty and Insurance)..
Just go in and plead ignorance, but if they want to charge you, ultimately it was you that ****ed it and not them

That's a new one - when car radio codes first came out they always said to put them in the freezer then stroke the chips legs to erase the cmos... never worked for me, but I'd probably get away with the microwave thing with 3 kids at home!!!

If you mean the SD-card flashing, T-Mobile Holland doesn't have an update available. There is an T-Mobile Holland ROM available, but the image is older than the image installed on my phone. When checking the ROM in the white screen, it says not allow. I think i need ROM 1.21.114.3 from T-Mobile if I want to do the SD-card flash.
I only have access to the bootloader, I have bootloader 1.04, and I have access to KITL mode, but the Windows CE Platform Builder fix also doesn't work

I was thinking also something like that. That I hard reset my phone and now it's broke. I was also thinking something like I left my phone on the charger for the weekend, and when I came back I did a soft reset because it wouldn't go on and know I only see a HTC splash screen.

Can you think of a good reason whey the boot screen has changed from the normal T-Mobile one... just hope they don't turn on the phone. Did you try Olipro's suggestion?

The T-Mobile splash screen is in the extended ROM. If the extended ROM is ****ed up like mine is, it probably goes back to its embedded splash screen, and that's the one from HTC. But thats not what I'm going to say, I'm going to say how should I know.
If I remember correctly a guy has managed to dump the ROM from a Hermes and flash it to the phone... saw a thread somewhere here. If that's the case then you should just need a ROM from a fellow dutch T-Mobile owner with the newer ROM. I take it your phone is not SuperCID

if you have 1.04; run the RUU on your computer; you will get a "Vender ID Error" immediately ignore this and run the updater AGAIN (do not touch or unplug your PDA) after doing this a second time it will begin to flash

I did what you said. I connected the phone to my laptop in bootloader. I started the RUU from WMXL 0.20. My phone goes to the white screen and at 0% i get a message on my laptop the connection got disconnected. So i start the RUU again, but again the message my connection got disconnected.
So still working on a good lie.
@vayip: sounds like a problem with the USB on your laptop. Try using a different computer. BL1.04 will let you flash any OS provided your NAND isn't full of bad blocks. You're a long way away from returning your device to Tmo IMO.
On the new computer:
direct USB connect to rear port only no usb hubs
pc running windows XP
turn off screensaver/Powersave mode
close all other apps
hands off the computer for the 25 minutes or so that it takes

Does it matter if the phone is simlocked or not. My phone is not SuperCID.
The strange thing than is, i have 2 laptops. Doing the upgrade don't work on both.
Will try a normal pc then. Maybe more luck.
Follow Oli's advice about retrying the update if you get an initial vendor ID error. BL1.04 will flash any rom without SuperCID due to a bug.
You might want to jump in with mtty first to see if your NAND is full of bad blocks. If it is then your device is toast fttb.....

I completely agree! If you ****ed up your device, than you should have the courage to stand up for it and if it was not your fault, than just tell them the truth! But suggestions like "put it in the microwave for 5secs".... come on
And just a small hint: If you (for example) really put it in the microwave, than you'll better pray that no technician ever analyses your device - if so you could get into serious trouble, mate.
Btw, if you microwave it, you probalby need a new microwave too.

Doesn't breaking your phone through your own actions and then getting it repaired/ replaced for free by telling lies make you a liar and a thief?
I trashed 8525, and that sucks, but it was my fault so I have to pay for it.
In my adventures flashing Roms, I've only bricked 1 Hermes (Cingular 8525). I actually told the local Cingular shop that I broke it 2 weeks after I bought it. The manager told me to bring it in and she replaced it under the 30 day in-store return policy. I was suprised because I had caused the bad NAND Block problem on the device but she said that since I was able to get an official Cingular Rom flashed onto it and it booted into WM5 (just wouldn't do anything because of memory errors).
Now I also have a very good working relationship with this store. I've gotten a phone about every 6 months from them over tha past 2 years and have given them some great info regarding WM5 devices (reccomendations on screen protectors, software & cases etc). I have 3 lines (2 with Data) and even if they don't know me by name eveyone in the store knows me by reputation.
Tomorrow I will have my spare Hermes (also 8525) so we can begin experimenting with getting some additional storage memory without risking bricking my primary phone.
The way I see it, we are taking a chance when we modify our devices.
I've had to return 2 Wizards for Warranty replacement to Cingular, both were CID Unlocked but the problems were unrelated to flashing Roms (One was because the touch screen developed a dead spot the other was because of Radio hardware issues).

Ok guys, yes...I'm a noob...
I did a master reset on the phone and now I get nothing...
It won't turn on unless I plug it in to the charger.
When it does turn on, all I get is a few vibrations, and
the icons at the bottom light up.
I can get windows to see the two "drives" of the phone,
but they are empty (have 0 bytes if you right click and check properties. If you left click, it says please insert disc).
I've tried a new battery and my battery turns another phone on...
I've also tried two cables and two PCs.
It hasn't been rooted or messed with, the battery died and I went to charge
it and nothing...I left it on charge overnight and at least see a bit life.
Any ideas, or should I just send it on to HTC??
So that others have a better idea... can you get into hboot or fastboot?

if you can't get into hboot/fastboot (totally forgot which, basically same thing) then you can't do the RUU

if you rooted and custom recovery you could but right now you out of luck you gonna have to return

There isn't a way if your phone isn't detected or you can't get into hboot. Meaning you have no control over your phone to do anything.
Anyways, for htc warranty exchanges that is done with tmobile... they usually send you the phone first and then you send one back in return. Unless your policy is different. So i suggest you calling them immediately.
Update
I can go into control panel and "see" the phone listed in device manager under portable devices as "F" and "G". Click properties and they are found as HTC devices. Does this mean I can do anything to it? I just want my phone back working as fast as I can. Sending it in will take a while. I bought this phone for the camera. We have a 1 yr old and don't wanna miss the Christmas pics...

are you on tmobile? they usually send within 2 days, their distribution center is in texas or something. I usually get it next day.
You said your screen doesn't turn on or doesn't show anything. It's gonna be hard to determine what you're doing even if you can run ADB to put it in oem fastboot and to flash a RUU that way. But it sounds like your display might be a problem too then. It'll be quicker to do an exchange. If you call in today, they'll probably ship it on monday and you'll get it wednesday latest. unless you have tmobile insurance plan. it should be next day and you'll get it tuesday.

No problem, I had my fair share dealing with tmobile exchanges lol.
If you purchased directly from tmobile it should be very easy to do an exchange because your warranty is verified.
If you bought it off craigslist/ebay. sometimes the previous users used a different carriers that makes the warranty no longer verified. HOWEVER many customer reps will still try to process the exchange (you can determine by their upbeat personalities lol).
If you run into someone who won't do it, just call again and talk to another rep. Most of the time they will push it through because it's still a newly released phone.
Have you already contacted T-Mobile support? You'll have to talk to them anyway before they agree to replace your phone.
The reason I am asking this is because there might be an unpublished backdoor way to restore your device if your device is not completely (hardware-wise) dead. For example, Dell Streak has a complete firmware image on its internal SD card and you needed to somehow trigger an IPL routine to restore the device to its original condition.
I haven't heard of anything similar on HTC devices yet, but hey, it's just a thought. And if there actually is a way, and you are the first one to post it here, you'll be a hero!

yeah we normally just flash a RUU, but you can't even see the screen, so we can't even be certain that we're in the correct modes to be flashing and stuff. because we require to ADB it to restart in fastboot, but we can't even see if its going to fastboot. or if it already is in fastboot to begin with, so we're not certain which commands to run with the screen being off. Well you can always try commands and it should only work in certain modes, but do you really want to do it blindly? I would rather just exchange the thing.

Well, I can't use it as it is...exchange is a hassle even in 2-3 days. Can't do anything until tomorrow anyway. I was thinking today, I've heard they can port Android to iPhone...there's no fastboot there, is there ??? Soooooo, if it's turning on, I should be able to do something...I want my phone back !!!

Hi everyone,
I just bought the Xperia S from the Sony store. I just finished downloading all my apps. While I was customizing my screens, this error message keeps popping up "Sorry! The application Xperia Home (process.com.sonyericsson.home) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
"Force Close". I keep hitting force close but it keeps popping up. I did a hard reset on the phone 5 times and it's still appearing. I called Rogers and they couldn't help me and told me to return it to Sony. I can't believe this is happening to me. I just bought the phone and didn't even get a chance to use it, other than downloading apps.
Could someone please assist me?

How do I try a different launcher? I can't even get past that error message. It won't let me in the main screen.
No problem here with my Rogers version. (Thought I haven't really started installing all my apps on it yet). If we had access to the bootloader I'd tell you to use that to restore a clean image. But since we don't have that (or I just can't get to it) your best bet is to go to the Sony Store
Use PCC or SEUS to restore a clean image onto it. This will wipe everything, but also hopefully fix your force closes.
As Scratching has mentioned, you should try using the repair function in PC Companion.
More then likely one or a combination of the apps you downloaded has caused the issue, some apps may not be compatible with the phone or are poorly coded, as the guys have stated best to do a repair, restore or factory reset, no need to send it in to Sony and a quick and easy way:
1. You may not get the popup msg to install PC companion when you plug in your phone to your PC, manually download PC companion here:
http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/pc-companion/
2. Make sure your phone is plugged in, open PC companion and top left hand corner of the window click either "update your phone" or "your phone is up to date" and a popup window will display with the option to repair your phone.
3. Follow the prompts to restore/repair your phone.
4. Restore your google account/contacts etc and be weary of the apps you install, best not to install random apps that look dodge, they generally have lots of ads and popups.

I ended up returning the Xperia S at the Sony store because the sales person was giving me different informaton on the warranty, then started to trash Samsung for NO reason. I wasn't impressed with how that store handled things. So I'm going to buy the Xperia S at a different Sony store tomorrow. I hope that location is better with their customers and don't give me the runaround.

I'm confused at your protest here, why not just have the guy replace your existing phone without the need to go to a different store? Yes, he might have been speaking of some BS, but that doesn't have any revelence to the product he sells.

When they first sold me the phone, they told me after 15 days the warranty is through Rogers and to not come back to Sony. When I called Rogers tech support to troubleshoot the problem, they don't know anything about the device because they don't carry it, so they told me to go back to the Sony Store. I was dealing with another sales rep and he told me the warranty is through Sony because it's "exclusive" to Sony and Rogers will not be carrying it. I told him that's not what his co-worker told me the other day. Then he told me if I get rejected by a Rogers Plus store to send the phone out that I can go to the Sony store and they will take care of it. I am getting mixed information from this store. Their customer service was awful and I rather deal with another location who will offer better customer service. Keep in mind, it does matter where you buy the phone from. If I buy the phone from the Eaton Centre and want the Sony store from Markville to deal with the warranty, they will more than likely send me back to the Eaton Centre. I have gone through this with many merchants where I buy tech products from.
I see, makes a lot more sense now. Yeah, the rep at my store said all warranty/exchanges are to be done by the Sony Store. Rogers really doesn't have anything to do with the phone (aside from throwing their crappy apps on the phone)
Yea if that Sony store told me that straight up, I would have exchanged it for another one. I wish the Xperia S was unlocked and didn't have any Rogers bloatware since it's being sold by Sony.

Whatsapp Virus spreading?

I might have a big problem.
This morning I booted my HTC One M7 as usual, and when it finished booting it opened a browser tap with a fake whatsapp update. I closed the browser immediately, and five minutes after this, the exact same thing happened. I started thinking how this could happend, and honestly I have no clue. All my apps are from the play store, and I only download documents for school. I haven't even downloaded a new app in the last week, however 15+ of my apps aren't up to date.
I scanned my phone with malwarebytes and it couldn't find anything. I rebooted my phone after the scan, and the problem seems to be gone. I was telling this story to a friend of mine this afternoon, and my mother said that she experienced the same thing, just a couple hours before I experienced it. After further investigation, it wasn't exactly the same. When she opened whatsapp, it asked her to do a weekly back-up of her chats. At first, she closed whatsapp, but when it appeared again, she clicked yes. She wasn't very clear about this, so I don't know if it was a fake menu, or the real deal. I have also scanned her Moto g (2013), and it found no malware.
I don't know if this could be harmfull. Especially because my parents use their phones for mobile banking.

It could easily have been done through whatsapp. Part of the reason most people have stopped using it. Viruses run rampant I'm just about all of Facebook apps. And no anti virus will find them as they are vastly different then normal viruses.

In the Netherlands literally everybody uses it, but it's good to know that this could indeed happen! Should I be worried about this, and what should I do when it returns?

Yeah I heard alot of people in Europe use it alot, here in the states almost no one uses it really except for kids. Most have moved to hangouts.
If I was you I would completely back up the device and then wipe everything and reflash the device.
Things like this will not be picked up by so called virus scanners.

In the article it says that you have to install apps from third parties, but I have almost never done that. I have downloaded popcorntime in the past, but I have deletet it almost 6 months ago.
I'm afraid that if I reflash my device, that it will come back fairly soon. Is it possible that it has spread over my wifi network? Because of the fact that my mother got something similar on the same day.

The key word there is almost. If you reflash the device and it comes back then it maybe something that someopne else downloaded and was shared through your network. As you said your mother also saw it so I would go through her phone as well.
There are many apps out there that do this that are in the play store. So it is all a matter of being careful.
There is a chance. If it is big or not depends on how you use your device. It could also have come from a website someone visited. Im not saying you did but many porn sites are set to infect devices when they visit them.
If it was me. I would just start from scratch with each device and make sure that all the things installed are legit.
You could also run a logcat and try to reproduce it. That would tell you what is causing it.

Then you have not been paying attention. Any browser pop that tells you to update an app is 99% an infected apk. It is a common practice for those that take apks and re-package them with malware

So I have to flash my phone, aren't there any other options? And if not, how do I reflash The HTC firmware to my phone?
Should I make a back-up before doing this, won't the malware spread again if I instal the back-up on my phone?

I do propably know where the problem came from, a friend of mine sent me a older version of soundcloud (the new one can't cache music). I installed that app, decided that it was to old for me and deleted it. The malware must have spread right after the first use. I'm planning on flashing my phone inthe weekend.
EDIT: I can reprodce the pop-up! It's linked to opening the app 'night mode', this app was downloaded in the official play store 2 years ago. Since then it hasn't got a lot of updates though.

Time for a little update.
Last weekend, I contacted HTC's customer support due to the fact that I couldn't find my software version. They told me that I should execute a RUU, but they couldn't find the right version, so I had to contact the Dutch customer support (I didn't do this in the first place because the Dutch customer support wasn't open in the weekend).
The next monday (23-11) I contacted the Dutch customer support and asked them for the ROM, and unfortunately due to the regulations they don't publish the ROM's. However, they told me to do a factory reset and that should solve the issue. Unfortunately, it didn't. After the reset, I now get a different Whatsapp pop-up once or twice a day. The pop-up isn't connected to opening an app, like it was before the reset.
A friend of mine experienced the same problem this week on his new Moto X. All the other phones in my home network don't have this problem.
I hope someone will be able to help me!

There's a chance that it might've spread over a certain network.... Is you and your moto x friend uses the same network ?

Yes, we both use the wifi network at our high school. But I did the factory reset friday evening, and since then I haven't connected to that network.
It might have spread through that network though.

Depending on the malware a factory reset will not remove it. In fact most malware cant be removed that way. You have to flash the whole device to get rid of it.

In my opinion after starting all over again as you've already been told, you should do all that you did before and monitor each step with patience and concentration to actually understand what's behind this... This may help out

As he said. Here is what I would do if I was in your place. Anyone got any extra steps to add feel free to chime in. This would kinda suck for a bit.
You will need a custom recovery. And a bit of time to set up
1. Take everything off device.
2. Format full device in recovery. Not factory reset. Format system, data, internal storage and both caches.
3. Flash complete stock firmware.
4. Get root before rebooting
5. Reboot, do not connect to wifi during set up. Do not restore anything.
6. Get Catlog from the play store and run it.
7. Then continue set up. Wifi and ect. Scan backed up files with a pc virus scan but only return what you really need.
8. When restoring from TIBU install apps fresh from the market and restore data only to apps. (sucks I know but only way to be sure) make sure to delete old back and redo.
Then monitor catlog. This will tell you everything going on. You would be able to figure it out.
Lol... Use adaway or adblocker and such pop up will be gone ... These are the new tricks from those freaking advertisement companies. They are now smart buddy. Even they can access the vibration as the pop up will come phone will get vibrate and users understand this as genuine and click on those ads . You got whatsapp pop some got browser pop up. Hope this will help u ...

How do I recover from bad flash using WDRT?

It really doesn't work the way everyone says it should. I was trying to unlock the bootloader on my phone, and I made sure to download firmware for the phone that matched the model number. It was a Lumia 920 model RM-820 from AT&T, and the firmware I used was supposedly designed for that phone. The filename of the firmware I found was RM820_3051.50009.1425.2001_RETAIL_nam_usa_100_01_443332_prd_signed.ffu
Ever since I flashed it, it's been bringing up a frowning face and rebooting itself. I've been told to use the WDRT tool, but it won't recognize the phone no matter what I do. It keeps searching for the device and never finding it, no matter how many times I reset the phone or whether I pull up the screen with the gear and the lightning bolt by using volume up. When I use the screen with a gear and lightning bolt, the software tries to detect something, but it never gets any further than the "please wait" screen. Anything other than that mode completely fails to detect anything.
It's very difficult to find information on this problem, because a lot of the FAQs and guides are really old and full of dead links. I don't have any kind of real background in this, and I struggled to make sense of anything I was reading about this. I'm really kind of a moron when it comes to phones, and I was a little overconfident because I know what I'm doing with PCs. I really hate how phones obfuscate all the details, won't tell you what's going on, turn your device into a brick if you make one mistake, and make it so hard to do anything with a device other than what the manufacturer intended.
In all honesty, it's very likely that if I don't get this thing fixed, I'll probably end up putting my SIM card into a TracPhone or similar device for a couple months until I can afford a new phone. Could someone help out a total moron? Please?
EDIT: Well, you can actually go ahead and close this thread... I don't know what happened, but apparently my Mom was able to fix it. The procedure failed on my desktop PC, my Surface Book, and my old laptop... but my Mom tried to use her laptop, and somehow it worked. I wasn't even watching her, so I have no idea how, though. And she doesn't know anything about computers, but she somehow did in 10 minutes what I couldn't do in 2 days.

I've had a similar problem with mine, bootloader unlock process didnt finish correctly and my Lumia 920 won't switch on, respond to Soft/Hard resets or respond to connections to the computer. WDRT and WPInternals no longer detect the device at all.
I hope someone knows how to sort this out
