How do you take bokeh pictures? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I saw on ultralinx, that there were pictures of bokeh photography taken by the galaxy s II camera. Does anyone know how they did that? I have no experience in photography, but want to try it out.

Tilt shift photography could also work if anyone knows how.

i heard about this website one time....i think it was called google.com. just type in what you are looking for and like magic it will show you cool stuff....

How did you get so funny, you aren't funny at all? I obviously looked at multiple sites, but those are for dslr cameras. Tilt shift photography is also hard to recreate without actually tilting the lens, so I wanted to know their trick.

You should probably ask on a photography board. It seems people on this board know more about using Google than they know about photography.

People here can get an attitude. I wish I could help with your question but I'd also say post on a photography board or search Google a little harder.
Sorry to see these guys get an attitude with you.

I use camera 360 for tilt shift. There's also a web app for Google Chrome that makes tilt ****ft but I haven't tried it yet.
I'm no photographer but I would experiment with macro to shoot bokeh pictures.

You did not see "bokeh" pictures come from a Galaxy S II - if you saw something claiming to have bokeh, it was Photoshopped. (Unless someone put a macro lens in front of the lens.)
"bokeh" is the quality of out-of-focus points in a photograph. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh
On a mobile phone, the sensor is so small that depth of field is insanely deep - it becomes nearly impossible to have anything that is out of focus. (Nearly all of the time, blurry photos are due to camera shake, not focus problems.)

Bingo. Bokeh is achieved with specific aperture and exposure settings impossible to get with a fixed lens camera like that on a phone. And true tilt-shift photos are done with an actual tilt-shift lens, not by holding the camera a certain way. This is why I responded the way I did. I've been a pro magazine photog since the early '90s having learned with film cameras. Digital has all but ruined the craft.

Software like the current version of Photoshop Elements gives you the ability to create bokeh effect. The small sensor size of most compact cameras (especially phone cameras) precludes getting true optical bokeh.

Yes it is question... but so what?. I think the attitudes of some here are a lot worse than a question outside of the Q&A section. Heck, a lot of the posts outside of the Q&A section are questions. If that bothers someone, they can post a simple suggestion to try the Q&A section.

Vignette can also simulate tilt-shift. If you want blurry photos you might as well just scratch the hell out of your lens, get it all dirty, and call it close enough for jazz.

See, I didn't know/don't know what aperture is... So, thanks for the info (especially since you're a pro and all) . It was probably Photoshopped anyway.

I love how once one person helps out and gives an answer, all the other people who posted dumb/non helpful/tryn to be funny comments want to jump back in and try to one up the person who helped out in the first place. Get over yourself.

I could have easily explained it to him in my first post, but as you can see from his last post about not knowing what aperture is, it would have been a waste of time. My subsequent detailed reply was to confirm what Entropy said rather than to impress or one-up anyone. Get over yourself.

FFC as a secondary camera ?

OK I have searched the forums here to no end, watched the videos about the procedures to do so, and the links to buy one, But I still don't see any indication that this mod is for a dual camera setup! Meaning I see in the vid's of people pulling out the old one [camera] and replacing it with the other one for FFC capabilities! Period!
So is there no way to acquire and install a dual camera setup on the T959 Galaxy Vibrant? Asking because the need to take pictures from the back is just as important as to snap photos from the Forward position, and to just have ONLY a FFC camera will seriously hamper the ability to snap pics when in say a crash or freight claim etc! The Nexus S phone has this setup, so can the dual hardware be installed on the Galaxy from that phone and then the proper driver/ROM to support it? Or are they two completely different hardware interfaces? [Connection wise I'm asking] Or should I just ask if I completely overlooked this scenario and the MOD, And it is for dual cameras?
The mod appears to me for just changing the position from back to front, period! NO DUAL capabilities! If I missed finding the thread for this question, many apologies to the forum!
You must be confused, the FFC mod definitely still retains the back camera. Only issue you get with the back camera is banding in low light situations.
You must be on drugs, blind, or 12. Either way if you watch the video the guy uses both cameras. Also if you look at the camera its both cameras in one piece.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
The new FFC camera contains both cameras. One faces still out the back, and other out the front. The front one is very small compared to the rear.
It's an all in one unit. I have one that I still need to actually put into my phone. I can take pics and show you....
ALSO... geez guys, you can be so very hard on people. He was mistaken or just didn't really look or read. This flaming is one thing that makes it hard for people to get the guts to even post if they are new here. Take it easy on the guy. He's new....
Appreciate The 2 Worthy Replys
Reply and Quote from Subzerold: "You must be on drugs, blind, or 12."
You know I might be going blind as my eyesight after 57 years is getting kinda bad, However to say such an arrogant, rude ass remark, is just plain immature, and truly shows what a POS asshole you really are, and to think your in a grown body with the maturity of a 12 YO is pathetic on your part! And I suppose you gave 22 years of service to your country in Corp like I did? I seriously doubt it!
So look who's calling the kettle black here! Dickweed! Oh and BTW if you don't have anything positive or helpful to say, then why did you reply at all? MIHO!
Anyway many thanks to eminembdg and thegreatcity for their helpful insight to answering and clarifying my questions, I now have the data I need to proceed with this MOD and knowing I'm not assuming anything that would've led to failure and disappointment! Oh and BTW eminembdg is right, its people like I just pointed out, that makes us newbies afraid to ask a question especially after I did do my due diligence, and I never saw them mention once or saw where they had left the back camera in, and they didn't mention that it was a dual camera setup replacement, and if they did, then I simply made a mistake and didn't pick up on it! OMG what a sin on my part subzerold! U must be perfect at 12 yo and know everything! must be lonely being perfect!
Anyway Moderators please consider this thread resolved and closed as I got my info from the two contributors who have respect for us inexperienced modders who try hard to elevate their knowledge here from people who do know and are pleasant to deal with!
glad you got your answer, and that I could of been of assistance. You could press the thanks button on my post?
Good luck on your mod, I'll be doing mine probably on Tuesday when I'm off from work. Should turn out fine as it is a pretty easy mod as I've seen and read.
Hope this bad experiance with posting doesn't stop you from being part of the Android community.
Dude you need to calm down, even if you were my best friend i would call you those things if you told me you just watched a video and didn't see something. I wasn't being disrespectful and I answered your question. If i wanted to be an asshole i would have just called you a dumb ass for asking such a dumb ****ing question! Who in the world would replace their 8mp rear camera just to have a vga front facing camera? What kind of dumb ass can't read the forums and find out that the only issue with installing a ffc is the banding in the REAR CAMERA in low light situations. If I was an asshole like some of the people on these forums my comments would have been something similar to those. But i didn't i was just trying to be funny grumpy ass old man.
Subzerold, the thing is he's NOT your bestfriend, THAT'S why you can't call him those things. You're supposed to respect strangers. Seriously.

Chrome ring around cameras

Looking at the picture at the link below. It seems the chrome ring around the cameras is flaking off. Has anyone else seen this in any other of the pictures?

It's a reflection. Don't you think "cheap build quality" would have been shouted from the roof tops by now? Honestly, with a picture that small, you can't judge anything but the shape of the phone. Email PPCGeeks to investigate the original photo about your concerns instead of complaining to us. When they post an article that a sharp eyed reader brought to their attention, tell us all about it.
Unbelievable.... Ask a simple question and get shouted down. I have been on this forum for years. Now EVERYTIME I post anything... I get responses like this.... Unbelievable. This is why I don't post much here.

Maybe some of that new age crap will make you feel better until another person suggests a proactive approach to get results instead of whine.
Regardless whether or not the chrome is flaking off (which it does look like flaked off chrome). It has been said once from the sprint chick with the hands on video that they were recessing the cameras further into the phone so they don't get scratched up as much.
I hope this is true.

For having my mom die two days before that post, I thought I was rather calm and not snarky.
Wouldn't it be nice for people to just ask the source instead of rumor-monger though? Hence my suggestion to ask the person that took the picture instead of asking the site about a photo that is most likely 1/10 the original... Not to mention hold the phone in his hands.
I think what we are seeing in the picture is the protective plastic is still on the camera, I noticed it too when I saw the pic a while back. Early shots of the Evo Shift appeared to have a similar thing going on.
SO........why are people still commenting on this?

Because people would like a camera that isn't going to flake off because it's pushed out so much farther than the actual back of the phone.
Plastic adhesive on the camera is still in place and its been scuffed up.Thats what we're seeing.
I'm getting a case on it anyways

[Q] Any experts on photo resizing?

I don't know anything about photo editing, but wondered if it was possible to resize a photo that is wider than its length, to longer than its width. For example: Turn a 800 x 480 img into a 480 x 800 img. Phones are taller than they are wider today. I don't know why they don't make wallpaper that will fill the entire screen instead of just the middle section of the phone from left to right.
Gimp. That is all.

The fact someone claims to have done something doesn't mean it is actually true, people troll a lot this days, and when someone says "Google this, that" they aren't giving an answer either, and helping is in fact the spirit of this forum, not trolling or pointing other people mistakes in a rude manner.

I think you need to better describe what you want the end result to be.
I can turn a 800x480 image into a 480x800 image in the gallery by rotating it.
If you want an exported jpg file, that is different than taking an image and cropping it for a wallpaper. The app referenced will take an image, crop it and apply it as a wallpaper. Just long press the photo in the app and choose set. Crop portrait with no scrolling chosen at the top will let you choose the area to crop, and apply the wallpaper full screen. But, that app will not export the edited image. When using the gallery to set a wallpaper you will get different results. Starting with a 800x480 image and cropping out the middle and scaling that up to 480x800 will give you a really low quality photo.
And finally this is not the place to make anyone (especially forum mods) prove to you what they say is right. The burden is on you to show what you tried, and show where it is falling short. So, try the app, and post a screenshot of how it didn't work.

I don't want to crop it. I want the entire picture to properly fit on the screen without as much stretch as possible. It doesn't have to be the exact reverse dimensions of the original photo. For example, turning a 800 x 480 photo into a 600 x 800. That's what I'm talking about. Obviously, most wallpapers are built for desktops. And desktop dimensions are always wider than taller (1024 x 768, 1280 x 1024, 1600 x 1200). What I initially asked is what is the best method, or is it even possible, to get a decent quality pic without cropping by taking an original pic like in the dimensions described above and make it slightly taller than wider. The GS2 is 480 x 800, but any wallpaper you find on Zedge or Wallbase will be 800 x 480, or 1600 x 1200 etc. always wider than taller. I wouldn't be asking these questions if there were an abundance of wallpapers out there with taller than wider dimensions.
Who said anything about making forum mods prove what is right? He said I didn't know what I was doing. I challenged him to show me after the fact. Isn't that how it works in the real world? That's like accusing someone of something they did wrong and instead of bring evidence to back up your accusation, you sit back and wait for the accused to come forward first with evidence to prove their innocence. lol. Why would I post pics of how it didn't work first, and how would anybody know what I was doing wrong? Sounds easier to me if you know how to do something, post how its done. Or if you don't want to contribute, then don't. Otherwise, don't act like a know-it-all but not follow through. And I don't know why everybody's gettin all butt sore when it doesn't involve you (other than the obvious fact he's a moderator and I'm a "noob" ,which I assume, like most forums, are not worthy of respectful replies. Everybody was a "noob" at some point.)
But Thanks for everyone who DID provide some useful knowledge.

If you don't want stretching you have to crop the photo. That app will stretch full screen, or crop and scale to full screen. If you want a blend of the two, to stretch a little and crop a little you probably need to use a computer instead of an app on the phone.
I still don't understand your goal, if that app doesn't do it. It does exactly what you described. It will let you take a picture that is wider than tall and select the area you want as a wallpaper, crop the picture and apply the wallpaper.
This isn't the criminal justice system. It also isn't the XDA help desk. This site was built by and for developers. No one here is paid for their time to spoonfeed people with a sense of entitlement. No one here is entitled to anything. Noobs get what they give. Mostly they don't give respect, so they don't get it back. Yes, everyone was once a noob. Generally the noobs that don't give respect leave because the forum is too scary and mean. The noobs that give respect stay and become l33t members on the board. (Unscientific anecdotal observation) These members grow tired of the sense of entitlement that makes its way to this board. That sense of entitlement is destroying this board slowly, driving the devs away.
You are asking for help, and have been told what you want to do is possible with Wallpaper Wizardrii by several people on here. So, we either don't understand what you are saying, or we are all involved in a conspiracy to misinform noobs. While the latter sounds like a great book, I think its most likely the former. So, help us help you. Show us what you tried, and maybe looking at what you show will help us understand what you really want to do.

So apparently you/they aren't paying attention, or are really here to misinform noobs. While the latter sounds like a great book, it's probably the former.
P.S. I really hope you're not a developer, and just a brown-noser.

I'm just an appreciative member.
If you want to resize a photo without cropping or losing quality what you want is a real Wizard or a time machine. There are no apps that can zoom the picture out to get parts aren't there to give you different proportions without cropping or stretching the photo.

EDIT: You ARE a ninja, you slipped in there while I was adding the addendum to my lecture.
EDIT 2: Because I am in a particular brown nosing mood here is a collection of high Res wallpapers one of the HOX devs posted.
http://www.scottsroms.com/showthread.php/1590-Wallpapers-100-HD-Wallpapers-My-private-collection
Those are high enough quality to be cropped down to a taller proportion and still look great on the 720p screen on the One X.
Quarlow - - yer now in my top 5 favorite people here in xda. Your points of view, how u approach problems, and genius use of mild sarcasm mixed with the truth of what you're trying to say brings a smile to my face. It's rare to meet someone like u.
Second, Ninja - - ur exactly right. Can't get an image to fit into different dimensions without sacrificing quality.
Third--to the op, my original response to u when giving u that app to try was nice, not sarcastic at all, and I was trying to help ya out. Didn't mean for the thread to get so out of control. Let's just end this now. Good luck.

[Q] Is My Phone Camera Broken?

Hello,
I posted some photos here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252112&page=5 (last post of the page) and I'm attaching some more photos here. Can someone tell me if my camera is fine or if it is broken?

Why do you ask.
If the people on stage don't have a huge spotlight on them the photo's would have turned out great but the photos look good regardless

I'm asking just to see if the camera is supposed to be working as it is. I think it is but some people out there are much more professional than I am and can tell me.

Looks good to me. It has trouble with those stage shots, but that's been my experience as well so far in similar scenarios.

Yeah pretty much - in every one the spotlight is causing the camera to way over-expose the faces.
I took a bunch more pictures outside and it doesn't seem fully focused. It was a clear and sunny day and I even took some of them from the shade. What do you think?

From the last picture, your camera appears to be making women look a bit heavy and large breasted.
I read in one if the reviews. The one camera is more like a professional camera. It does what you tell it to do. You have to set it to lighting and such. Not really an automatic point and shoot.

Smart watch photo thread

Thinking maybe we start a thread for people to post pics they have taken from their restart or x201 device. Took this one tonight thought it came out pretty good wanted to share.
If this belongs in another section, sorry I thought this was the best one for it.
Guess no-one else has photos to share from watch?

Nice photo...
In a good light picts are quite good but I just don't like that I have to break my arm in three spots to take a pict...
And until I open a camera app the moment is gone...
I installed snap camera on TS and it's really good.
I'll post few shots later..
