[Q] Camera upgrade? - TouchPad General

There is tutorial for replacing broken camera (here is link at ifixit, delete link if not allowed http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-HP-TouchPad-Camera/6075/), any chance can put better spec'd upgrade lense camera with more megapix/resolution/etc?
Some potential camera replacements for Cyanomod 9? ->http://search.store.yahoo.net/yhst-...log=yhst-77219656498823&query=CAMERA&x=51&y=9

It might be possible if the hardware fits, but then there may be a driver issue.
Sent from my rezound.

Yep-driver would be key, and cyanomod 9 doesnt do cam yet anyway, but potential is there, especially cam coming from a droid device.

It looks just like the iPhone 3g camera. If I could take the touch pad apart I actually have a couple cameras laying around from my iPhone repair days.

It does look very similar. That'd be pretty sweet if had the same pin-out.

@Soneracar,
Can you compare some of your iphone spare cams you have to this pic of touchpad camera pins/mobo connection

Thanks!

Well looks like 28 pins for iphone vs 20 for touchpad.

the 5mp cameras on the samsung devices blow away the OG Evo's 8MP, i assume its all in the quality of the harware and i think HTC made the right choice.. 8MP only means the picture is bigger in size, doesn't mean the quality is better.
BUT, i'm still waiting UPS to deliver my phone...

Seriously though, I only miss the micro-HDMI port, since I already have a 25' cable that I have wrapped around my living room.

try flipping it around. i hate the cable but at least i have my clock.
Absolutely nothing
Was running Linpack scores on the 3D and was hitting consistantly about 124-130 with peaks above 230.....i never used the kickstand, this thing has DLNA so it can wirelessly stream to ur HD TV if you have the right "internet connectable" tv or boxee/dvr-pvr/set-top/roku so don't miss the hdmi....(saying that however no real-hdmi type app so, ahh....then again when was that ever practical?), I agree with the 8MP vs 5MP, the 5 on the nexus s 4g and epic 4g look way better than the 8 mp on the evo4g, the compression level of those phones camera's are way less than on the original evo, I took pics with EVO4g and with the other two phones and compared all three after copying the images from the phones to the computer, and the new evo's camera's are way better than the EVO4G camera (not to mention the little feature of well 3d recording/snapshots.) ... , front facing camera's about the same, free ram off the jump was like 600 mb after running several apps, the 1.2 dual core is so snappy, I honestly have no desire to root with the exception of curiosity of what this device is going to bring to our every day lives, way to go HTC i literally have an EVO4g, an epic 4g, a nexus s4g, an evo3d, a lg quantum, and an htc thunderbolt in the room with me and nothing has even remotely came close to the abilities of this device so far and its only been like 10 hours. Battery life seems to be about onpar with the evo's original battery, but thats expected. Have had the evo4g since launch day and the thunderbolt since launch day so im used to it, will buy an extended life battery when they are realeased. Oh and if you buy an otterbox defender case, the powerbutton doesn't accidently get hit, i was doing it alot too before I decided to buy one of those cases mainly because the back camera's are raised above the rest of the back of the phone and seems to be a glass cover figured if it was dropped it be over, so just saying. sense 3.0 is amazing.... I have no problems retiring the EVO 4G for good and sticking with my Evo3d/Thunderbolt combo!

Droid DNA Review

HTC was kind enough to send me a DNA to test over this past weekend. I was coming most recently from the HTC Rezound and a Samsung Galaxy S3. Below are some of my thoughts/experiences with the device so far. It's only been a few days, but I'm in love with this device, and I won't be looking back at my S3.
Specs
Platform: Android™ 4.1 Jelly Bean with HTC Sense™ (also known as Sense 4+)
Processor: Qualcomm® APQ8064 Quad-core 1.5 GHz, MDM9615M
Memory: 16 GB, 2 GB RAM
Networks: CDMA: 800/1900MHz; UMTS/HSPA: 850/900/1900/2100MHz; GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900MHz; LTE 700 MHz (Band 13)
Camera with HTC ImageSense™: 8 MP main camera with auto focus, LED flash, BSI sensor, f/2.0 aperture, 28mm lens, 1080p HD video recording, 2.1 MP front-facing camera, Dedicated HTC ImageChip™
Display: 5-inch super LCD3, HD 1080p, Gorilla® Glass 2
Audio: Beats Audio™ built in
Battery: 2020 mAh LI-ION (embedded)
Dimensions (LxWxT): 141 x 70.5 x 9.73 mm
Weight: 140 g
Display
The display is absolutely stunning. At five inches, 1080p and 440 pixels per inch, you’ll be hard pressed to find anything that even begins to come close to this. This massive resolution begs for more rows in the stock Sense launcher--icon spacing is a bit more than I’d like, and is reminiscent of iOS on the iPad. They could easily have fit another row of icons here, but this isn't a big deal, and I'm already used to it.
The Auto Brightness setting works absolutely flawlessly, adjusting to the level of ambient lighting before the display is even turned on. This is a stark contrast from my Galaxy S3, which is often too dim, and frequently changes it’s brightness long after I’ve turned the screen on and began using the device.
Battery
At 2020 mAh, the battery seems a bit lacking for a 5” 1080p monster like the DROID DNA. Initially I was worried about its performance, but I've found it to be pretty respectable. Currently I'm at 42% battery left with 1d1h13m on the clock, Screen On for 1h33m, and Voice Calls for 30m. I'm guessing this is going to clock in right around 3 hours or so of Screen On time (with automatic brightness).
Build Quality/Design
The device feels exceptional. The material covering the back is slightly grippy, which adds a feeling of security when you hold the device in your hand. The Galaxy S3’s smooth finish is almost too slippery, and makes the device feel delicate and prone to dropping, though I am quite a fan of its curved shape. There isn’t a creak or groan to be found anywhere around the device, which is something I’ve become accustomed to with HTC devices in general.
The DROID DNA retains the three primary softkeys (that have become the standard since ICS) instead of on-screen buttons, though unlike the Samsung Galaxy S3, the Menu button is not included. That is somewhat annoying, as apps’ inclusion of the on-screen Menu button is inconsistent, and navigating to the phone’s setting menu requires a swipe of the top pulldown. But this is pretty nit-picky.
Radios
Upon opening the Navigation app, the GPS locks on instantaneously. This is a huge advantage over my Galaxy S3, which often takes literally minutes to acquire GPS signal and begin directing me on the road. Again, I'm used to good radios/GPS from HTC, my Rezound and Incredible were both flawless in this department as well.
In tough service areas (like basements or large buildings), the DNA outperformed my S3 every time. I held 3G signal in my gym (in a university basement) where the S3 dropped to 1x consistently.
Camera
The camera on this device is fantastic--if you're used to the HTC One X you'll know a lot of the features, but coming from the Rezound it feels like a massive improvement. It's still 8MP, but HTC's new sensors are amazing. The low-light photos are a huge improvement over my Rezound, and the S3 as well. You can take snapshots midway through recording video, and the continuous shooting mode works exceptionally well, offering a "best shot" option to automatically delete all the other pictures in the series if you only like one of them.
I've attached a few shots I've taken with the camera in low light settings. I'll come back and add more thoughts later, but this is just where I'm at initially with the device.
dang got ninja'ed since i was writing up something similar but since you beat me to it i concur with everything you said.

Another week before its in my hands is gonna be torture.
The Battery doesnt worry me much... coming from a T-Bolt, I'm used to charging regularly at home/work/car.
The 16GB with no SD slot is a bit of a worry.. My Tbolt has only 8GB and I'm still fine.. although I do have some usage of the SD card there. Still, I dont have any need for movies to be stored on my phone.
So excited for this phone.

Not that I know of. I've only seen rumors online of it being available in a few additional Asian markets, but I don't know for sure about that. I wouldn't be surprised if this screen found its way into another device for the global market in the coming months, but I guess you never know. I sure hope it does. It's too beautiful a device to not be available elsewhere.

Thanks a ton both of you! Not as much difference as you'd think either.
Another question that just came up in the office was about its charging port. Is it behind one of those annoying flaps? And is it a standard micro USB or the different EXT- Micro USB (still accepts standard micro USB) like on the Rezound?

No it's back to the standard micro USB, like on the original Incredible. It is behind a flap, though. The charge port is at the bottom of the device, just like the S3, which I prefer quite a lot. I always hated the weight of the cable pulling downward on the charge port when it was on the side of the device.
after playing with one of the wireless chargers at the vzw store i think once they officially release i will be picking up one of those since i hate the idea of having to pull that dang flap when i want to charge
Dang, so I'll have to pass-on my hardly acquired rezound cables to my co-workers. They were sure a pain to find lol. Oh well, that's the least of my worries  .
Yeah the flap may be something that could be slightly annoying. I remember the one on my LG Venus... Ripped it off after a few months of use
I wonder how much the wireless pad's will be?
Oh, and another question (my bad!), as jmichaels1982 mentioned in a few other threads, can you do voice/data simultaneously over 3G? I know it should over 4G... We tether our phones a lot via USB (EasyTether) and are often out in the boonies for work, not to mention where I live doesn't have 4G yet. Thanks again you two. It sure helps having someone on the "Inside"

Almost Perfect

Just curious to hear what everyone else thinks is missing from making the g2 the perfect smartphone....
My ONLY two complaints are I wish the NAV buttons would have an option to Auto hide so we would have the full screen to use... Also wish it could have been slightly thinner....
Other than those its the best phone I've ever used!!

If they had developed Qslide to be compatible with any app, it would have been an amazing device.
My mother and sister have the iphone 5 and iphone 5s, and both were amazed at the quality of the G2 pictures. Make sure you set it to maximum quality. HDR is also amazing on the G2. But overall, the auto intelligent mode is my favorite, as it seems to be able to focus at varying distances, something the iphone has trouble doing.

How about not having that strange looking dot matrix on the screen when you look at it in direct sunlight. Definitely cheapings the look of the phone
Sent from my LG-D801 using xda app-developers app
I love the phone in general (VS980), but the smallest and most annoying feature is the inability to change the 'menu' soft key to a standard 'recent apps' button. I didn't realize how much I would miss the easy access to it. Long pressing the home key just doesn't do it for me.
It's a good device, but not even close to being perfect. The hardware part of the phone is the best in the business.. besides the resolution on the rear camera. The software however.. is another thing. Don't get me wrong, it functions, but it has no style.. or lack of a permanent style. If someone used an Xperia device in the past you would have known what I am talking about. And there are some core apps that are missing functionality - primarily the music player - just look at the options and the connections Walkman app has.
So yes in my opinion LG needs an European design team, I mean just look at the Asian music atmosphere and you will see how unsophisticated or different it is from the European or the American style. Maybe they need a calm, all-lines-design Japanese guy to help them out.. wink wink Sony and LG working together against Samsung and Apple is something I would love to see.
Pre rooted.
Open back for battery and SD Card or just SD card slot.
Autohide Navbar or (hardware button)
Camera (software update) so better at photos for low light.
Split screen and no Qslide (Side bar to open up like S4)
Qmemo to autoamate contact list add.
My only thing against this phone is the camera. You really have to hold the phone still in order for it to focus, or you will get the "heartbeat" effect. The low light shots could also use a little work .. Also...I found that certain apps somehow trigger the lg iq agent which drains the battery very fast..I have disabled it many times but it always gets triggered after certain apps are installed..besides the things I mentioned the phone Is close or near perfect.
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk
My only gripes about this phone is the lack of an SD card slot, the rear of the phone being glossy as Hell, and the camera. Geez, this camera issue... While it does take AMAZING pics, the frame rate in low light (which is what they touted the phone as being GREAT for low light shots) Is absolutely ABYSMAL. I can take a good picture in perfect well lit conditions, but in a room lit with florescent lightning, unless I'm absolutely still, it takes a few second to focus, then the shutter takes too long to close. By then, the shot is lost.
Other than that, I love the software. I've kept this phone on a stock Rom pretty much since I've had the phone. It's the longest I've kept a phone on the stock Rom. Lol.
If they would've given us the soft touch matte back like the N5, it would've been PERFECT. This thing is a fingerprint MAGNET. Also another thing worth noting... not all cases fit the verizon version. The back buttons are smaller and the camera housing ring thing is different from the other versions. But for a plastic phone, it's def better than any Samsung I've had. Real compact and solid feeling.
Overall, a solid device, the best I've had.
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk

There is not much i can say about this device so far coming from a nexus 4. This is however my first day so i dont want to draw a conclsuin just yet. Overall i am very, very happy to see that despite this phone havibg a larger screen it is about as big as a nexus 4. This is sinply amazibg because i find note2 and 3 too big for a phone. The battery life so far has been okay i read on here that it takes about 4 to 5 days for things to settle in.
Otherwise just like others i would say the only thing that bothers me is the phone's glossy back.
I thought i will be rooting this device soon but honestly it does a great job and i see no reason to do so at the moment, maybe when i get bored.
I dont refret the upgradr and i will cross my fingers and hope for the best. One last thing to mention on my part is that this phone has got the best camera i have ever had on a phone to date and as a person that doesnt base his decision off aphone's camera.. This thing is gorgeous.

3D Printed Nexus 6 Dock

I have a 3D printer and really want to make a nice QI enabled dock. I've started with a very crude design that I made in a matter of minutes. It's definitely a work in progress at this point.
I have uploaded my first design to Thingiverse. I'm printing my first prototype as I write this post. Currently just testing to see if the phone will fit then I will try to clean it up into a final product. If it does turn out to work I plan to design a custom car mount as well.
I have no formal 3D modeling experience or training so this is a fun project for me. Don't bust my balls too bad! Any input is helpful and considered for the final product.
I've started with a rough 3D model someone made prior to the release of the device as a reference. (I did not create the Nexus 6 3D model, I located it on reddit and not sure of the creator) I have already printed it and its very close to the correct size and dimensions.

Nice work. I'll be watching this thread.
What do you have planned? Do you know what Qi charger you're going to use? I'm a huge fan of stuff like this!
-J
As you've got the design, the dock is going to be VERY top-heavy when the N6 is in it, making it prone to tipping over. The front and back of the base should probably be a bit less vertical, and more beveled, allowing a wider base. This will increase the footprint of the doc, but will be a lot more stable.
Otherwise, looks really good. I don't think I've ever seen anyone else make a truly upright (90 degree) qi dock. I'd be interested in this for sure.

I agreed with you after reading your post. However I have completed the prototype and its not as top heavy as imagined. I think the fact that its inset into the base does a good job of lowering the weight/center of gravity.
I have not decided which QI charge I want to use. I've never used one before and will definitely have to do some research. I used the vertical design because like I said the end goal is to make a car dock as well. My end goal is to have something like the Motorola car dock I had for my Atrix.
The print warped on the bed slightly at the outer limits. Pushing the limits of my heated bed so there isn't great adhesion. The "Nexus" logo in the front came out well. Now that that's out of the way here's some photos.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Premium HD app
I took some pictures with the 3D modeled Nexus 6 which fits much better. (Of course that's because I used it to make the dock). It definitely shows the differences between the model and the phone. The actual phone tapers down much thinner at the bottom compared to the top. This is going to be my biggest challenge to recreate in a 3D model.
Just wish I had a 3D scanner to make an exact model to use which would simply things. Can anybody help me there?
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Premium HD.
Oh! This is a landscape dock. I totally didn't get that from your original post. That makes a huge difference. My recommendations were for a portrait dock, where it would have been a lot more top-heavy.
Now that I see your intention, the only recommendation I'd make is some sort of latch at the top of the dock, or to make the side-holders a bit higher, say up to the bottom of the speakers. Otherwise, hard acceleration, especially when turning, may cause the N6 to pop out. I know the corners are held pretty well now, but a good accelerated turn could cause enough lift of one corner to allow it to pop out. (Obviously, that's not needed for THIS version.... just the car dock version.)
Of course, if someone at Google/Moto had thought of... oh, I don't know... metal discs or something, so that you could use magnets to hold it... Now, where have I seen that used? Um... oh yeah! The Nexus 5!
Wow this is nice! Top marks for creativity and attempting to make something like this.
Just out of interest where did you get the 3D printer from and how much if you don't mind me asking?

I bought a Makerfarm Prusa I3 8" which I got for around $500. I put some money into an auto leveling setup and upgraded hotend. Overall around $600.
That being said it takes quite a bit of tuning to have it run correctly. I have spent many hours/days tuning this one. Finally got it running smoothly. I bought it used and had to fix a lot of things the original owner didn't put together correctly.

Yes those were my plans for the car dock version. Still working on the design for a latch that grabs the top to secure it. Here's a photo of the Atrix car dock that is my inspiration.

Project on hold.
One of my thermistor wires broke. Waiting for a new one to come in so I can get my 3D printer back up and running.

I've changed the design a bit. It no longer goes all the way up the back of the device. It is now a block style dock with a slight 30° angle which it sits inside. Will try to print it out and post pictures tonight/tomorrow

looks much better and i'm sure it prints faster without the highback
I dig that! Can't wait to see it printed!
Here it is. Still needs some fine tuning but works well.
Will put the design on thingiverse with a link soon so others can download and print it!

It did print much quicker without the high back.
I've almost given up the QI charger idea since I purchased a Tylt VU on sale. Will try to find a cheap QI charger and finish the project in the future.
Thinking about purchasing an accurate 3D model of the Nexus 6 so I can make custom cases and even better fitting docks. At this point I'm not sure if it would be worth the investment.

3d model nexus 6 case
Hi there,
I wanted to print a 3d case for my nexus,
but i can't find any good templates, and i have no experience of creating one on my one.
Is there anyone who has a 3d case model for the nexus 6, or is able to make one?
Hey kkl0wn,
I was hoping you could post your v2 of the landscape dock up on thingiverse? I just got access to a 3D printer and would love to print this for my phone!
I'd like to print this on my Ultimaker, will you post a link to V2? Thanks!
