With the upcoming release of the razr dev edition, maybe we actually stand a chance of getting the unlock from motorola!

Signed, though it honestly won't make a bit of difference.

That's the spirit!
Don't be so pessimistic. Motorola will listen when they realize how many millions they lose when people switch to a different manufacturer.

..this isn't the first petition I've signed regarding the locked bootloader, the last one I signed had well over 10 thousand signatures over a year ago. You confusing pessimism with a sense of reality.
They don't care what you think, and at the end of the day it's Verizon's call, why else would they claim by the end of 2011 they'd be releasing unlocked phones yet do exactly the opposite?

Then why did HTC get Verizon to allow them to unlock boot loaders? In the end, Motorola could force Verizon's hand. Somehow HTC did.

Here's an avenue that could possibly be pursued - forward a copy of the petition to the Federal Trade Commission for their input. Put it as a restraint of trade issue and you might get somewhere. If HTC/Samsung/LG phones are being unlocked, then it stands to reason that Verizon is keeping Motorola on a short leash and interfering with consumers rights.

I have participated in the soaks tests and it seems to me they do it more as a formality rather than caring on input. I say what I think there but I never see any changes that come from that input. It seems the soaks are released whether there are problems with them or not.
I can see why some would take a realistic view. Now if the deal for Google to buy Motorola gets approved I expect we will see some good changes. I am still hoping that makes it through. So I would say I am cautiously optimistic. Maybe the petition will help too though I expect the deal they have with Verizon might get in the way.

It has been mentioned somewhere recently that the Motorola lockdown has.to do with obligations to some international contracts or some garbage.
Doesn't.Motorola make phones for the U.S gov't?
Maybe that's their "international overseas obligations "

Sounds very reasonable and likely

Early september unlock for USA sensation and E3D

From Htc's facebook:
**UPDATE 7/10**
We wanted to provide an update on HTC’s progress with bringing bootloader unlocking to our newest phones. We know how excited some of you are for this capability, and we’ve put significant resources behind making this change as soon as possible. While we wish we could flip a simple switch and unlock all bootloaders across our device portfolio, this is actually a complex challenge that requires a new software build and extensive testing to deliver the best possible customer experience.
We’re thrilled to announce today that software updates to support bootloader unlocking will begin rolling out in August for the global HTC Sensation, followed by the HTC Sensation 4G on T-Mobile USA and the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint. We’re in the testing phase for the unlocking capability now, and we expect it to be fully operational by early September for devices that have received the software updates. We'll continue rolling out the unlocking capability over time to other devices as part of maintenance releases and new shipments.
HTC continues its commitment to unlocking bootloaders and supporting the developer community. Because of the importance of this community to us, please expect an update on this about every few weeks as we make progress toward launch. Thank you for your patience and continued support!
Early September? Pff......
Well that's good news. But I wonder if we'll have our phones unlocked before the update is released.
And there it is...
Over two months? Feels like i'm back with Samsung.
Really you think that is to long?
Honestly give me a break. This type of update is a huge deal and undertaking. I mean, sure they might be able to push it sooner....and brick half of the devices.
How happy would people be then?

Um no, risk of bricking devices b/c of the update is slim and none if they wanted to go about it the easiest and fastest way possible. They toss in the ENG-hboot on a signed firmware zip and all is okay. They are chosing to make this more difficult though hence the longer timeframe.
Yay! Now all of you who said "im returning within 30 days if its not unlocked". Can now take your phones in tomorrow and shut the phuck up

ICS launch event

Who watched the ICS launch and is even more angry about having a locked bootloader?
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
I watched the event. Now hoping that the X2 is on the list to get the update.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
I am going to say that the X2 wont get it, at least not anytime soon until Moto breaks it down and skins it(so maybe next summer). The fact that there is so much built into the phone to function without buttons means that Moto has to build in and map their functionality. And, since supposedly the Xoom is the first to get it on tablet, you would think it would go to the Razr, then Bionic/Atrix 2/Photon 4g, THEN the lower end devices. Needless to say, I don't think you should get your hopes up.
I watched it though. I was VERY impressed with some of the things I saw! The lock screen portion with the video was really cool! However, I don't think I would want my phone to do that everytime, seems too tedious still. Maybe after the phone has been passive for 20 minutes or something like that.

My thoughts are, with the patent wars, Google is trying to cover their ass right now. Until the proposed deal is approved, they are wanting to make sure that nothing slips thru the cracks that could be harmful to their cause in the hands of the opposition. Not to mention, they probably have some new devices in testing along with new hardware components that would be in Google's best interest not to have leaked until they are certified by the FCC. I am going to have to give Google the benefit of the doubt, and say until the deal is approved, they are doing what they can to cover their asses.
As far as VZW being to blame for Moto, I think it has to do with the fact that Moto is an American company, and they can be pressured by big Red. Whereas HTC and Samsung typically have a broader market share outside of the US. Especially with Sammy being a monstrosity of a Korean company in all terms. I lived in Korea for 2 years(Army), LG and Sammy run their world over their! LG is even the biggest ISP! They are leaps and bounds beyond what we have in the US over there though. Thanks to the FCC and FTC! My computer monitors are 2 Innopix 24" OLED 1920x1200 and I bought them there almost 4 years ago for $150/ea! I built my entire computer setup there Feb 2008, I still score a 6.8 on Windows experience index. Cost me less than $1,500 for what would have cost $4,000 easily to buy off of Best Buys shelf... Not to mention Apple, ugh.

The simple fact that they locked the Razr before it is even released, lends me to believe your hopes will be crushed. Sorry man, no reason to lock a phone during the same period you stated you would unlock them.
Now, if 4.0 is still a "Google Experience" as other phones update to it, without their blur's and sense's like honeycomb was for tablets, MAYBE.

I understand the locked bootloaders because VZW probably spends thousands of dollars replacing phones for people who don't know what they are doing, just trying to impress friends. But still, we payed for it, its ours, we should be able to break it if we want
And I think we will get ICS, it just might take longer than expected.

Motorola sponsored bootloader unlock. Would be nice. Wonder if it'll only apply to any new phone only. HTC applied it to almost all previous phones but what incentive does Motorola have to put work into phones that are no longer being sold?

It really shouldn't be a huge deal, but they have to create a small bit of software that wipes the device, unlocks the bootloader, and marks that the warranty is void somehow.
And what they have not said that perhaps the phone would have to be bought at full price. You have to wonder how they plan to put the catch in there.
Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk 2
so i saw this tweet interaction on Motorola's website and followed it to a twitter user who asks about a RAZR user and it doesn't look like it will happen (for any of us). If they do release some downloadable tool maybe there's a hope it can be exploited. Other than that don't hold your breath.
This is only for the new Moto Q (or whatever it's called) and currently, it's only for Sprint customers. No unlocking of older phones, especially on Big Red.

Yeah way too good to be true and not coming to Dx2 , Verizon already nixed plans for moto unlocks on some devices. Big V wants to suck you dry and they don;t want any "unauthorized " features being added . They want a dime for every Facebook message you send , mark my words, that will be coming soon to a phone near you.
Yeah I call bs... moto never gonna gas about you ke or any one .... especialy "laura" ...lmao .
I had a good laugh at that screen shot especially when the bot gavevher the same bs generic protocol answer second time around.
We are on our own. Just accept it.
Even if they do start allowing unlocking via their version of unlock tool.... yoy think big red gonna allow that?
Just look at htc ...." from now on all our phones will be unlockable ..."

Few minutes later...
"Except all our new flagship phones on att.. and maybe some on verizon... ok ok maybe so truth is we have unlock tool but you can't use it..."

And on top of that the DNA is factory unlocked. So it actually doesn't effect any DNA owner.

I understand why companies want to lock the cell phones, but it shows that they don't care about power users. I don't even do that much with my phone, and it doesn't really affect me- it just seems like a big eff you to those who want to do more.
This is what that petition says and I think it is crap you can't take a phone to a new carrier even if you payed full price for your phone or your contract is expired.
because the DNA can be factory unlocked doesn't mean your next phone will be...
So I signed it
signatures needed 33,543 total signatures 66,457
The Librarian of Congress decided in October 2012 that unlocking of cell phones would be removed from the exceptions to the DMCA.
As of January 26, consumers will no longer be able unlock their phones for use on a different network without carrier permission, even after their contract has expired.
Consumers will be forced to pay exorbitant roaming fees to make calls while traveling abroad. It reduces consumer choice, and decreases the resale value of devices that consumers have paid for in full.
The Librarian noted that carriers are offering more unlocked phones at present, but the great majority of phones sold are still locked.
We ask that the White House ask the Librarian of Congress to rescind this decision, and failing that, champion a bill that makes unlocking permanently legal.

[POLL] Likelihood of Bootloader Unlock

Do you guys know what a self-fulfilling prophecy is? Honestly, I think it will happen, ive learned a lot just so I can try to help solve this too. The more negative people are about it though the less likely people will be to discuss it or be motivated to do it.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Realistically the only people "qualified" to answer this question would be a developer working on this. Anything a normal user says is pure speculation.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
I don't mind speculation.
If enough of us wish for it to happen than maybe it will (remember Peter Pan?)
There's a way around everything.
Self fulfilling prophecy theory is lame. Not only is it fake but a lazy way to think. The only ones who can figure it out are the ones trying to hack it. The rest of the people can think whatever they want. They have no impact on it happening or not.
With that said I do not believe this will be unlocked. The beauty of design in this thing limits the amount of roads one can take to attack it. Its never been cracked and its been tried for well over a year spanning multiple devices. We only had a *unlock* because of leaked info. That's it. If that didn't happen we would all have nothing.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app
I am optimistic but honestly I will likely be on the next device GN3 or something else long before it happens. Yet I still offered up my money to help motivate those who can get it done.
Odds Key Lime Pie for S4 happens?
As a previous Verizon user, I don't see this being unlocked.. Sorry
Not holding my breath. Anyone like to purchase a brand new GS4? I will never buy another phone before doing some homework. Good luck to those trying.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda premium
The real question isn't will it be unlocked (it won't be). It's will a leaked unlocked bootloader become available.
This is basically bad new for anyone wanting a phone with SDcard support and an unlocked boot loader in the future on VZW or AT&T. Samsung is the only SD option now... And it looks like they've got this boot loader thing locked down (no pun intended), at least when it comes up Qualcomm. If the Note 3 uses an s800, I don't see why the boot loader situation would be any different from the S4 and S4 active...
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 4
Vote with your goddamned wallets!
I hate to also be the voice of reason but the sad reality is that this booting processes is sealed up tight and it's all Verizon's doing. I'm here for my room mate who hates his stock S4 with a passion but absolutely loves my CM10.x+OC S4...I just switched from Sprint to T-Mobile, for networks. I considered Verizon and ATT but having had friends with Verizon phones (Motos especially) over the past few years I knew that it was nearly pointless, save for a leaked engineering/unlocked signed bootloader or 1 chance at an exploit on release-day firmware before it was sealed up tight and likely for good.
It's not that I have no hope, there's always a chance and there is always a way...but with each successive breach of such a system the next iteration becomes exponentially more difficult to overcome.
I stuck with Sprint's haggard network for years because I knew they didn't give phone hackers a hard time. I switched to T-Mobile because I did my research and found the same. HTC capitulated on their new locked and encryption signed bootloaders after the EVO3D debacle a few years back.
As for my new Samsung Galaxy S4? I had my phone for 20 minutes before I flashed a custom recovery and had a CM10.1 nightly running with a custom 2.2ghz OC kernel that comes with tons of governors, tons of IO schedulers...on light use with screen turned down low, OC'd to 135mhz/2.1ghz I can get almost 2 days out of my phone and it is smooth as effing silk like no phone I've ever seen...and I've had no wakelock problems.
This phone screams.
Am I bragging? Sure...but not to hurt your feelings. I'm sick of companies acting like THEY own the computer that YOU bought for YOUR pocket. I'm bragging to enrage you.
Vote with your goddamned wallets. I did when HTC wouldn't unload their bootlockers (lol), and Samsung will forever have my business unless they start that crap too (or their phones start to suck)....same goes for T-Mobile. (Protip: stick to the underdogs. You get far better customer service and far more leeway...when you are #1 and #2 you appear to not need to try anymore and treating your customers like idiot children and criminals is somehow acceptable).
This isn't Samsung's doing...ask any Sprint, T-Mobile or international model owners.
Vote with your goddamned wallets.
I wish the best to you my brethren. Good luck and happy hacking.
well...
