[Q] How do I find the right ROM? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to put a better ROM on my wife's GT-I9100M I really just want something which much better battery life and speed for her... mostly battery life though.
With so many different kernels out there, I'm a little wary of installing something now, in case it'll brick the phone. Does it matter what kernel these roms are based on?
Her baseband is I9100MUGKG2
and her kernel is 2.6.35.7-I9100ZSKG2-CL361136 [email protected] #6
and build number is
GINGERBREAD.UGKG2
I'm sorry if I'm posting a redundant thread, but I've spent a few hours on here, and Have still no idea what get.

so i imagine ur wifes phone is stock right?
then ur going to need to root the phone first :L
Then i wuld recommend speedmod kernel or siyahs kernel for the best battery life.
Im running Checksrom with speedmod kernel, and usually get a decent 2 days out of it

It's rooted, so that's done... I don't have to worry about bootloader or anything?
I'll grab what you have and see how she likes it, since it sounds like it's working for you.
Thanks!
Silvercloak

PS. I got the Speedmod kernel, but where do you get Checksrom?

Same here: CheckROM v4 and latest version of Speedmod kernel and the battery life is around 2 days. Smooth, no FC's, no issues!

No no worries about the bootloader
just install Checks rom, and it comes with a kitchenapp and u can change the kernel to speedmod from within that.
BUT
make sure that the i9100M is compatible with the rom!
PS
if ive helped dont hesitate in saying thanks
Edit: my bad, just googled I9100M and found out its indenticle to the 19100 except in the name xD
so u shuld be all gd to flash, but make sure u backup before just in case.

Ok this is weird... I installed it using CWM and rebooted... it looks exactly the same as before except under about phone it says Build # is CheckRom RevoHD v4... And where do I find this kitchenapp? I don't see it in the app tray. Gonna do a reinstall of the ROM, I'm not sure if it really... took.

yeh, its a stock samsung rom mate
and the kitchen should be in the app drawer under the name kitchenpro

Well. So far so good. She hasn't really noticed anything different. In spite of my backing things up with titanium she's still swearing at it and setting some of her stuff back up.
We'll see how it goes now for battery life. That'll be what she wants most. The regular stock had the phone dying within less than 10 hrs or standby.

Yeah I discovered I had to download the kitchen thing seperately. Ended up using CWM anyways. I guess we'll find out how good the battery thing works out tomorrow when we run it down from a full charge.

How do you find the right rom ? You try out a bunch of roms until you find one that works well for you. If you think you're going to have the same experience as someone else with a given rom or kernel you're mistaken.

Hey ! I have a soft brick Prob can you help me out.
Heres the Prob: Phone recovered from soft brick through Odin (FIRMWARE=KI3). Flashed ChainFire's kernel for KI3. Added CheckRom v4 and my own rom to the external SD card. Got into recovery, Wiped everything including BatteryStats booted Check ROM. It boots up but as soon as it's up error msgs come (Force Close ones).
Need help in fixing! PM if you are willing to tell me ! Plz Reply!

Why are you hijacking this thread ???

Not sure how you got 2 days battery on that ROM. My wife is only getting 12 hrs. . Might have to try something else.

+1 Pretty much nailed it. Won't know how good a rom is until you try it out yourself.

The problem is, not every rom for samsung GT 9100 seem to be the right ones... What I'm saying is, I can't just grab any ROM from this site and slap it in, it seems like they have to have the right kernel or combination of stuff to work. I don't want to soft brick it, so it would be nice to know exactly what would be safe for my phone.
There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to these roms.

Unable to search marketplace since installing slade87-v2-cm6

Hi guys,
Firstly many thanks to slade87 and all those involved in the making of the above mentioned rom. Finally got it woking on my phone and am loving!!
Sadly, I have a problem, and its probably something stupid ive overlooked. When im on the marketplace I can see the apps fine if I manually look in the categories, but searching for anything, even by the exact name tells me that no such thing exists in the marketplace!!!
Any ideas.
Thanks

a fair point, to be honest i went for a rom that matched the baseband on my phone and looked stable and to be fair to the rom everything else has worked fine. i have tried installing other roms after installing cwm using these instructions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182571&highlight=installing+cwm
sadly when i did this every rom i tried to install generated an error message regarding scripting and android 1.5.
luck.... i dont seem to have it!!!
gone back to this mornings backup of the stock 2.1 rom and will try again tonight when i get in from work. have got cyanocomb 1.4 downloaded so might give that a try unless any one has any suggestions.

Cyanocomb is a good choice
froyoCM6 v6.01+hotfix to 6.01.2 by madbulls is also a very good rom
even better would be to try the gingerbread roms
there's 3 of them currently and all 3 of them are very very good for usage too
Now using cyanocomb 1.4, battery life was a bit of an issue to begin with but has much improved with a little messing around. May try further roms, only gripe is the symbol key not working, but the softkeyboard takes care of that after a fashion!!!

CM9 Alpha [LINK/INSTRUCTIONS] [NOT NOOB FRIENDLY]

This is just a link to CM9 over in the OG GS2 Developer forums:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410400
THIS IS NOT NOOB FRIENDLY
IF YOU HAVE TO ASK, YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE DOING THIS.
MAKE A BACKUP THROUGH CWM
Download the ODIN files from the linked thread
Copy Google Apps and Face Unlock zips to SD Card
Reboot into Download mode
Flash the ODIN files (warning::: this flashes a ICS bootloader) -- Edit, try without flashing bootloader first. It's safer.
Reboot into Recovery
Flash Gapps and Face Unlock zips
Do a factory reset (yes, AFTER installing everything)
Reboot
Set up your phone
Reboot again
PLAY AROUND FOR A WHILE
Restore backup to go back to whatever you were using before
If something confuses you, this probably isn't for you and you should wait for a i777 version of the ROM to be availible (it won't take long, please wait and save all of us from DIS ROM BRICK MAH FONE threads).
Things that don't work:
Everything listed on the CM9 Alpha page +
Home Button = Back Button & Back+Search buttons do not work
Phone does not work (and flashing the RIL in the CM9 thread will not fix this == it's a kernel problem)
This isn't my work, I'm linking and providing instructions on how to flash an ALPHA ROM. The phone DOES NOT work!
I'm not affiliated in anyway with Team Hacksung or Cyanogen.
You don't have to flash the ODIN files, just use the CWM zip he provided.

You must have already had an i9100 bootloader.. the install script he provides with his cwm release specifically looks for the model number.. flashing i777 roms don't so you may not have noticed up until mnow.
Just remove the first two lines in the script and it won't check.
edit: I've always been very careful and have never flashed any bootloaders on this phone. Just to clarify I didn't have to edit the script on this one though, but i have on others in the past.

There were changes to the bootloader from froyo to gingerbread on the i9000 that the rom depends on, so one can assume there to be similar bootloader changes. It's probably best to wait for Atin to give us some proper information and/or a build for the i777 after the holidays.

SGH-i777 wrong kernel

Hi there
-I'm on AT&T using a SGH-i777
Right now, the Android version is 2.3.4
Kernel Version is 2.6.35.7
Not sure if all of that stuff is relevant, but hopefully it helps.
I'm very new to flashing, rooting, and all that good stuff in general, but today I attempted to follow a guide in attempt to put CWM on my phone, and then I would use CWM to flash Cyanogenmod 9 on it next. Being the complete noob that I am, I only realized too late that the Kernel provided in the guide was for the GT-i9100, and not the SGH-i777. Right now, the phone will boot up into Android, but displays the GT-i9100 and a yellow warning sign at the boot loader before launching into android. So far, I've not noticed any adverse side effects due to mis-flash, other than it being, you know, the wrong kernel. I've rebooted into CWM, and so far I believe that works, but I'm honestly not sure where to go from here.
The guide I followed was: *Can't post links as this is my first post, but it was on the cyanogenmod wiki, titled as, "Samsung Galaxy S II (AT&T): Full Update Guide"*
The kernel I installed was named: "codeworkx's Kernel with the ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0.2.3"
So essentially what I'm wondering here, is where should I go from here? I was thinking I could flash a new kernel on my phone, but I think I only got lucky here and didn't brick it, so I'm hesitant to follow random guides I get from Googling without someone with experience thumbs-upping it for me. I'd still like to put Cyanogen on my phone, as the official ROM(Right terminology?) that was pushed from AT&T sucks and lags while opening messaging and the like, and unless anyone would be willing to recommend another, better ROM, then I'll probably go with it once I get this worked out.
Thanks in advanced

yes your lucky u didnt brick as far as i know that would usually do the trick....the only thing i can think of is starting from scratch. go into the development forums for our phone and there is a simple process to restore to stock and start over but someone here might know a little more but thats what i would do honestly
What makes you think it was a GT-I9100 kernel? From the name, I'm pretty sure what you flashed is the codeworkx CWM kernel for the I777. The boot screen that says GT-I9100 and has the yellow warning triangle would appear any time you flash a custom kernel using Odin or Heimdall. If you had installed a kernel which is actually for the I9100, you would not be able to use all of your capacitive buttons. You should be able to flash the firmware of your choice using recovery from your current setup.
Oh man, do I feel dumb or what?
Thanks for the quick help, I really wasn't lying when I said I was a noob at this!

I'll keep this as just in case... I had a freeze up after dinner today... I downloaded world of goo for free from amazon then ate... when I went to turn it back on I had to do a hard reboot with the power button
thanks for all your hard work... merry christmas

So this happened with this kernel or another?
Sorry for asking, but i didn't understand... Does this kernel have a root? SuperSU or SU should work fine with it?

the modified cubed kenels are giving me issues... I only had one lock up in 2 days but I just woke up to another lockup... think I'm just going to have to live without sweep2wake... just flashed the stock/write kernel... I'm not angry I'm glad to see development making progress and every phone is different... battery life is fine with me on stock but its better on the modified kernel but I can't risk my phone being locked up in the morning on a work day if my alarm doesn't go off

since the kernel now supports write to system you can now root from the phone interface instead of recovery now... so yes SU's should work fine
Thanks for this! I've been enjoying the bullet-proof stability of UKB with stock kernel. Delighted to now have a writable system without the ups and downs of undervolting, overclocking, etc.

Thank you, very much. I, for one, had some issues with freezing and SOD's on the more customized kernel, but I just kept my mouth shut and used this one, rather than make a big deal of it. I appreciate the work you do and wish there was some way I could help with the development of the other kernel. Not that you need it, but I'd be happy to do any testing and provide logs, should the need arise. Thanks again for all the work. It is most definitely appreciated!

Keeping your mouth shut doesn't help. Posting as much info about when/what/how things happen is what helps. And not going nuts about it LOL.

I'm fairly proficient in adb... definitely not a pro, but I am able to work my way around. I'm going to try 2.3.1 and see how I do with it. If I experience any issues, I'll definitely post any info I can. I want to get more active in the community to give back to those who have given so much to me over the years. Without XDA and dev's like yourself, I might as well have an iPhone.
I also promise to make every effort NOT to go nuts about anything, However, bananas are an entirely different matter. ;p
@dsb is it ok if someone mirrors this real quickly dhost is down thanks

So can I just DL and flash this in recovery, or do I need to follow the steps of your custom kernel?

Everyone's idea of "good" is different. Try this for starters http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2551140
Then try for yourself.
Bit more responsive? How fast do you want? I've never had such a fast and responsive phone. I've always been a flash junkie but I don't even feel the need to root not alone install a custom rom. The speed and battery on this phone is simply amazing.
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I would suggest you not to root but it's too late anyway.
Have fun playing with it.
Thanks for all your replies, yes it is quick but the stock rom does it no justice i can tell that it could be quicker, and i have to root so i can do certain things that i need to do.

Get TWRP recovery 2.6.3.3. on it and flash you some CM11
Of course, first make a back up of your current rom so you can always go back to it.But you just got it, I enjoyed the stock rom for a bit before I starting flashing other roms. Then again we didnt have many to flash in the beginning
Houstonn's 4.4.2 PA has been good to me. 12/24 release is very smooth and great battery life.
OP enjoy your new device, go check out the Development section for all the great work....ensure you are in the correct Model forums.
