[Q] Flashing CWM on SGP 5.0 US yp-g70 - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

Can someone maybe post a video or give me a very detailed list on how to flash this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445840? I would really appreciate that. Thanks

Rj describes this on his kernel:
[*] Download kernel from site.
[*] Get your device in download mode (device turned off, press vol down key, plug the usb cable.
[*] Open Odin3.
[*] Select kernel file in PDA section.
[*] Keep the rest Odin settings untouched (make sure re-partition, phone bootloader update and EFS clear aren't checked).
[*] Start.
There are tutorials around here which you can search for

can i brick my player by messing up?

btw, which file do i use? there are 4 files that he posted

Sorry for not replying earlier, but use the first file to flash with Odin. It should be a tar file. After you flashed that you can copy the latest zip to your device and install it through cmw. You should not get a brick through this, but there are ways to restore if you do.
Cheers

Thanks guys i really appreciate it

hi. I am also having problems with flashing this kernel.
Whenever I download the .tar file, it appears on my pc as a winrar archive. I think I have properly selected the right .tar file right on top of the list for download:-
File Type: tar DD_01142012.tar - [Click for QR Code]
but it always appears as a winrar archive. So I thought I have to extract it and do something with the zImage. So Dunca321 told me I don't have to, because I am using Odin, well, I think I only know how to use Odin and would like to stick with it.
EDIT: ahh nevermindd.. got everything done.. flashed it anyways

Flashing Simply Honey Revolution 3.9

Hey guys so I am interested in flashing the simply honey revolution ROM on my samsung vibrant. But I am stuck. The instructions call for you to flash via Odin with the 512 PIT file. But when I download the light version for first flash in the instructions I find a .tar file. How do I flash this rom? Thanks for your help!
I have the same question, since I am used to work on the EVO 4G but not this phone. Any help will be appreciated. I already flashed a gingerbread bootloader, but I still need to flash this ROM.
Put the tar file in the pda and pit in the pit section.
just use that file but open PDA selection. it will flash it. also make sure you odin a gingerbread boot loader first.
Ok, understanding a little bit more. Right know I have the zip and the tar file inside that one. I don't have any Pit file mentioned. Also in the instrutions doesn't say if the phone needs to be in download mode or whatever mode. Thanks for any other info.
It should be in download mode to use ODIN.
Okay let me see if I have this process correct. From the page I download this http://www.multiupload.com/KP8HBPR20Z from under the instructions coming from eclair/froyo. Inside I see the .tar file. (not a .pit file). In ODIN i put the .tar file under PDA and click start. Once that is done I can download the bootloader and flash that via ODIN. Is this correct?
yeh
or you could use rom manager to flash whichever package you want after odining the light version instead of flashing the bootloaders
dont do it
I just went through hell flashing that rom and even BRICKED my phone. (well semi-brick, none of the buttons worked) I made the same mistake as you. Dont use the Simply_Honey_3.8_LightOdin file, use the one that is named simply_ODIN_HEIM . The light odin is bull****. Didnt work for me. I dont even want to guess why...
Good Luck!
Remember to open the .zip and extract the .tar, zip's cant be flashed in odin

[Q] ROM Confusion

Hi all,
I just downloaded this stock ROM from SamFirmware.com as it was a KG6 build and I wanted to give it a shot. When I went to unzip the ROM, it contained 5 files. I know which files go where in Odin when there are 4 files but this one has got me confused. The confusing part for me (being a noob) is the fact that there is a Kernel and a Code file...where do these 2 files go under? They both can't possibly be selected under the PDA section so is one a boot loader file??? I have taken a screencap of the zip file contents so that hopefully someone can explain where the 2 particular files go in Odin.
Thanks all.
How about following the instructions first .
Who told you to unzip it ???
Odin flash tar file via PDA .

Well he would need to unzip the archive if he wants to use the included tarballs to flash his device.
@OP: When you open Odin 1.85 just put the following in the slots as below:
PDA: Code_I9100XXKG6.......
Phone: Modem_I9100XXKG6.......
CSC: GT-I9100-CSC-MULTI-OXAKG6.....
Ignore the rest of the files. Don't need to use .pit file and make sure you don't tick repartition. I would encourage you to read up on using Odin first if you don't know what you're doing before attempting to flash.
Thanks Intratech..I am familiar with Odin as I have flashed my device successfully many times. Just never encountered both the Kernel and Code in the same zip so wasn't too sure whether I should use both or just one.
just curious but what is the actual difference between the two??
also, pit file is used to reset the path no?? as in wipe the lot except cutom binary hits??
cheers
col
Also wat happens when u do click repartition??? Done it by accident once phones fine??
Wat does pit stand for!?
Partition info tree? Lol who knows?

need help flashing enthropy's kernel with cwm

can some one show me how to flash enthropy's kernel with cwm i tried flashing it on odin with the zimage in pda but its not working
Never mind I got it to work
You need to put the tar file in PDA in Odin.
Trying to flash my kernel in CWM right now doesn't make sense - since if you've got CWM you're already running it and I have only one release so far.

Download Odin3(you can Google it) then download the tar file from entropy's post. Once in Odin put your device into download mode using power and volume down. Then connect to the PC click on PDA in Odin and find the file and then press start. That's about it hope this helps.
REMINDER MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE U.S VERSION OF THE GALAXY PLAYER
THANKS but I did not mean using cwm I meant to state that this kernel had cwm and I got it to work
thanks for the kernel

Entropy do you think putting touchwiz 4.0 would work on the sgp using this http://www.tutebox.com/3776/mobile/install-touchwiz-4-0-on-any-samsung-phone/
I personally don't know how to do this though
Every TW launcher hack I've seen was disappointing... I just use LauncherPro anyway.

just to be clear to enter download mode, i hold power and volume down at the same time? and if i want to exit just to test if i did it correctly, what do i do to exit? and does usb debugging have to be on? and after putting my device in download mode, i connect it to pc. i have it set on mass storage. thanks to anyone who helps.
No:
Turn the device completely off
Hold VolDn
DO NOT TOUCH POWER
Insert USB cable
You also need to install drivers for the device - they are usually included wherever you download Odin from.
Samsung drivers and Odin3 are available from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386669
DO NOT use the PIT file or the bootloader included in the same zip as Odin in that thread!

[Q] Odin Questions

Hello Forum,
I have downloaded ODIN for flashing and recovery, and as of the moment I have the Samsung Galaxy 5 (USA) Model. Now, I have previously flashed and recovered stock with it but I don't know which files do what.
I have a PIT file, a BOOTLOADER, and a PDA file. Could someone give me a depth description of what each one does? I doubt I'm suppose to use all three all the time in case I've bricked my device or flashing.
Thanks in advance.
PIT stands for Partition Information Table. It basically tells odin how big each partition is, how their arranged, etc. It doesn't contain the actual contents of those partitions, just how they're laid out on the drive.
The PDA file is your actual system image, and is usually compressed as a .tar (or tar.md5) file. It will contain a kernel and one or more partition images which contain the actual contents of the partitions that're described in the .PIT file.
To flash with Odin (or Heimdall, for that matter) you need a .pit and one or more partition images. I'm not too sure how you'd use the separate bootloader file in Odin. I'm still something of a n00b at this.

You actually don't need a .pit file to flash with odin. All you need is the .PDA file. I believe the .pit file is only for if you want to re-partition the drive as well. Forgot to mention make sure only Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time are checked when flashing in odin with a .pda file or you will brick your device.
Thank you guys for that, I figured more or less what you are saying. I just needed confirmation! :good:
Using Odin to flash the TerraSilent Kernel
I would like to flash TerraSilent Kernel 1.3.5 for Galaxy 4.0 (YP-G1) USA. I have downloaded Odin3 v1.7, and would just like to confirm the steps, as this is the first and only Android device I have and wouldn't like to brick it. (This is the also my initial step to flashing the EtherealRom V2.4 ROM.)
I have the Samsung Drivers installed. That is all I need to use Odin right?
Steps:
Download the TerraSilent_usa-1.3.5.tar file
Put Galaxy Player in download mode (Power Button + down)
Connect the Galaxy Player to the computer
Start Odin
Ensure only Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time are checked.
Select PDA and choose the "TerraSilent_usa-1.3.5.tar" file that I previously downloaded
Then click start.
I have some other questions, I have been reading up the forums and would like to clarify something with the .pit file. Is it only required when you would need to to re-partition the drive? and therefore installing a kernel does NOT require a re-partition of the drive, am I correct?
Which of the following scenarios would REQUIRE a re-partition of the drive (and thus a .pit file when using Odin)?
- Flashing a Full STOCK ROM (with Recovery) for e.g here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531850
- Flashing a Stock-based ROM such as EtherealRom V2.4 ROM
- Flashing a Recover such as CWM
I'm new to this Android ROM scene so I just trying to get a better understanding of this all.
Thanks in advance.

True all you need is the .tar file to flash. The pit file is usually unneeded when flashing a custom rom. However, make sure you turn on USB debugging first (Settings->Applications->Development-> Check USB debugging) before flashing anything. Sometimes just not having that checked gets you into bootloops and cause problems.
PIT files are used when you get your partition tables messed up. I believe this means you're not able to boot into the device or access download mode anymore (basically for Bricked devices). So you 90% (made up statistic =P but you get the point) of the time when you are flashing back to stock, you just need again the .tar file (unless as I said previous your device is bricked). You almost never need a PIT file to flash a custom rom from stock, and Flashing from CWM only requize a .zip file that's still in the zip form (meaning don't unzip it with winRAR, 7zip, and similiar programs

Hi, thank you for this. But I am having a problem...
I am unable to create a flashable METAINF.zip using 7zip. I tried to flash it using CWM and Philz with installation aborted message both times. That was with 4.3 firmware. So I then tried to repeat the process with the 4.1.2 firmware with the same results. Am I missing something on making the zip flashable?
Thanks,
Kes
Edit
Scrap that. My zip is now flashable. Was compressing the entire folder, not just the three files within it. 4.3 didn't work though. Off to have a go at 4.1.2 instead.....

Nope, still no network. But instead of saying emergency calls only, it says no service. Manually searching for a network shows a pop up saying no sim
It is proper forum etiquette to only quote a prior post when necessary and then only the pertinent portion of the post. Above is a good example of a 10-page thread from only 1-2 pages of content. Please do your fellow forum members a favor and try to adopt this approach.
Thank you Scott586 for pointing out my drastic error which I can only profoundly apologise for. But may I, ever so gently, point out that I am a very new member and am not yet familiar with the buttons. The forums I usually frequent have a "quote" button which quotes the post you wish to reply to. This forum simply states "reply", a button I am accustomed to using when replying/responding/posting on a thread.
A forum etiquette that I am familiar with though is not to give newbies a hard time while they learn the new layout. Maybe that is one which could also be implemented here?
Oh, and back on topic, 4.1.2 didn't work either. Back to the drawing board for me
for my phone, that's not work. I'm on 4.1.2 (XEF-I9300XXEMG4) and when i follow your process, network is over, WiFi too! IMEI/Baseband are blank.
Maybe i make a mistake but i don't think. Thank you.

Excellent step by step explanation, all the vital information and links to the tools needed to complete the procedure,.

This method sounds quite promising but looks like it's for stock ROM only...I've lost my network, but I have a custom rom installed (Archidroid 1.7.12). Network was working on stock 4.1.2 with ariza patch. Any experience with that or have any idea how your method would be applied to my situation? Thanks!
