[Q] What is the file that manages APNs? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have google'd my mind out looking for the file, but the search results contain so much APN junk from other things!
Could any of you helpful helpers who actually answer questions tell me what file in anroid manages APN's?
thanks!

You can manage apn on my phone by going to settings, wireless and network and then manage access points. There you can edit the apn stuff.

AFAIK those are defined in the CSC.
Look at /system/csc or similar, don't remember the exact path out of the head ATM.
Don't have the phone on me now but will try it first thing in the morning.
thank you for the info, would have never guessed it would be in there.

[REQUEST] My ATT apk

I'm looking for the MY ATT apk with widget, if someone could pull it from their Jetstream. It would be much appreciated.
I believe it was named ATT communications? I may be mistaken.
This apk shows the customer's data usage and time remaining before the data/billing cycle renews.
Thanks for your help
Edit: BMW-boy posted all ATT bloatware, which includes the ATT communication manager. Located here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432854
Thread closed as far as I care.
BMW-BOY rom in my topic has that ATT data usage widget. Use that.
I am using that rom, but do not have it...?
attachements
See attached...
no widget or MyATT app...
help? :O
I try to upload it to you if I have
Thank you thank you!
same here
I am looking for this widget also... Don't want to go over for sure.... haha
NO BMW-BOY rom dont have. Try EBAUL rom or use 3G watchdog from market. It is the same.
I wish someone could pull the app =(

If you know what you’re doing, you can use dsixda’s android kitchen to pull the apk file from the stock rom.

I didn’t see anything labeled att or communications, but noticed something HtcBackgroundDataWidget, HtcDataRoamingWidget, and HtcDataStripWidget apk files in the \system\app folder.
I searched inside the backup i did with Titanium backup, for the my ATT apk,
however did not find the specific apk.
I am posting a picture of the search result in the backup folder,
maybe you can identify the missing apk.
if you find it let me know and i will upload it.
I'm supposing it is the fourth one down, com.m.ATT
I will try it if you can post that one. Thanks !

It's the my ATT app, it tells you how much data you have training on your data plan. I don't know the apk name. Just the app name.

[Q] MX2 mms, apns

I have a mx2 with ntelos carrier. I flashed eclipse 2.2 and was wondering about a fix for the mms. I used voice dialer to open apn's and when opened there were none listed. The eclipse rom uses verizon, and when I open it lists the verizon apn's. Is this the reason mms cannot be sent? Is there a way to delete the verizon apn's?
Yes that's the reason mms is not working. As for a fix, dont think there is one because I couldn't find one either. Just start emailing pics lol.

Wish it was like the ol htc desire, there were tons of ways to change it!
Try adding a new apn with the mmsc "http://mms.ntelospcs.net" or if there is one already listed edit that one via voice dialer. I'm going to flash my bro's phone soon I'll let you know if i get it working.

Thats the problem. There's no option to add a new APN.
Can you edit the one that's there? I don't have acess to his phone right now but when i do I'll check it out. Btw what firmware version were you running when you flashed eclipse? he'd like to get it running on his also which is why i ask.

No it wont let you edit anything. there are a couple apns listed, but you cant edit them.

I do not know if this would help or not. But their are some backup stuff in the market. I tried to mess with one yesterday but it did not work. I am trying to figure this out because if we could get APN change then awesome. Have you thought about trying to change it in the ROM itself? Through the zip file? That is my next venture. I will let you know what comes up!
THank you,
Twobrare
I think that is the only way. I flashed back my stock rooted rom, installed apn backup and restore, then flashed eclipse back and tried to restore the backup, but no dice. If we could flash in recovery, it might work. Hopefully someone who really knows the rom can help. Thanks for all the help!

Decompiling an app

I ask a question on your site several weeks ago about the default messaging app on Samsung Galaxy s2 aokp jelly bean. It seems that if someone sends me a picture with text the picture covers to text and I can't read it. I asked if there was any way to correct it and below is the answer I got. I am sorry to disagree with whoever posted this however that is not a simple fix. I have Google and look for how to decompile a app and I am unable to find a app to edit a apk file. I am NOT asking for a step by step but surely someone can recommend an app I can download that would allow me to open the MMS app and edit it. Once again this is not a simple fix perhaps it is for you but it is not for me thank you for your time
This is a simple issue that the user can fix. Just have to decompile the apk and adjust the spacing. A search would have saved you opening a new thread.

If you search xda or google you will find plenty of tools that will do that for you.
I really do appreciate all the hard work that xda developers do. I do not like posting on here because I know your time is important but I also don't want to feel belittled. Have searched your site perhaps I'm poor at searching. Is there an app you would suggest that I could download to my phone or Android tablet to edit apk file. Thanks so much

Thanks so much however after posting this I updated to the newest aokp and the issue is resolved. It does still have the sender's name overlapping the date but not the picture overlapping the message. Thanks so much and I will still try the suggested APK editor.

Go check out the Android development guide by Google, you can get several tools to decompile an apk. As well as .dex file

I agree that response was pretty rude. I'm guessing they were trying to scare you away rather than giving advice on next steps. That if you don't know how to do what they said you'd leave it to those that do know how.
But on to your original question...
Wikipedia's location for APK format (can't post link as I'm too new) says that the file is just a ZIP file (or JAR file). So likely 7-zip or your favorite program that can open ZIP's/JAR's will work. You might have to rename the extension to .ZIP or .JAR for the program to recognize it.
Nobody was being rude. We told him to search and that there are plenty of resources already available to him. Nothing wrong with that. Good luck and happy flashing.
The post was mine and it was not rude in the least. The information for what you need to do is posted. Has been for a few years now. Ever since people started doing customs themes. You will not be able to do this without a computer. All you have to do is decompile the apk, find the XML that displays the mms message and adjust the spacing by a few pixels. And then recompile the apk. There are tut all over the place on how to do this
You may have to be creative in your searches to be lead where you need to go but that is part of the learning that android requires. Sometimes you need to think outside the box to get the outcome you desire.

This only works for 35% of the apk as the XML files are encrypted until decompiled as are the .9 pngs

Try just to delete all the themes.apk and leave the only theme you want
I figured it out, that, now the question is, where andorid stores the data thats relevant to the mobile internet?

It should normally be stored in the build.prop file, but I'm not sure where you have to change the settings.
Please press thanks if I helped .

Need decompile settingsprovider.apk, on res/values/bools.xml you van desactivate mobile internet.
For change theme on build.prop search for
persist.sys.themeId=
persist.sys.themePackageName=
and change the value for your theme package name and theme ID.
