sgh-i777 cm7.1 screen randomly won't wake - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

hi all,
been running cm7.1 relatively happily for months. there are a few bugs (features?) that drive me crazy. the worst one is that the phone randomly won't wake the screen from the power button.
the phone is awake as i can SSH into it, it just won't wake the screen.
sometimes if i repeatedly press the power button and swear at the phone it will then turn on. but that's rare. usually i just have to wait and try it again 5+ minutes later and it will turn on as if nothing happened.
yes, i searched at length on this one...
ideas? thanks!

It has happened to me 2-3 times in CM7. It is known as sleep of death and is a common problem for many. I believe it is not limited to CM but I haven't tried other ROMs for longer period. May be you can try different ROMs after reading through the thread and see if there is no reported SOD issue.

I faced this issue with Icscrewd 2.0.1 ROM 4 or 5 times. If i press the power button it used to restart.

I have had this problem. I reset my phone (Wiped and Reinstalled) and that worked for me. Have you tried it?

This has happened to me a few times on this phone, but also happened from time to time on my old Atrix as well as my captivate. I found that getting a call it text will often wake it up. plugging it on to a power source also seems to help.

Power button problem?

Ok, I just got this Gtab from woot a few weeks ago
and like the next day, flashed Vegan 5.1 and the suppliment
and whenever I plug it in to charge, the screen shuts off and on and off maybe three or four times before settling on one or the other
It only does this when it's charging
also, when I wake it up from sleep, the reboot/shut down menu pops up
like I've been holding the power button 5 seconds
I'm not sure if this is a hardware problem or software, but I can't find any information anywhere
I suspect it's the button, but the button feels pretty solid, and it's not wiggling or anything and it only seems to do this when it's charging
Any advice? Since I got it from Woot, there isn't a store that I can exchange it for another one if it is a Hardware problem...
Did you do a master data reset after flashing the rom? I had some weird behavior in my home and search buttons before I did that.

This happens to me (and others), as well. I've just learned to live with it.
Check Clemsyn's kernels.. it seems as if they are working on trying to tackle some of these issues..?
This happened to me on Vegan 5.1.1. Im using Vegan GB experimental now and no longer have the issue.
It is definitely something with Vegan. I have found that if you press the button briefly (1 second) and then wait.. it will usually wake up cleanly. Sometimes, when yo do this it will flash the unlock screen, and then go dark again.. so you may have to repeat. However, if you hold the button a long time like you are doing, you run the risk of rebooting the thing if you hold it too long, so the short press technique seems to work better.
I am experimenting to see if running something like captivate keep alive will fix the problem.. but I think the answer may be "no".
Update for people searching for a solution;
Clemsyn's kernel seems like it did the trick. it hasnt done that since installing the kernel two days ago

My Galaxy TAB 10.1 wont turn on, I need help!

I tried the different methods or hard reset, Power + Volume buttons, Power + touch screen, still nothing; I let it charge for several hours still nothing, blank screen. The product IS under warranty but I have received it as a gift and don't have the receipt, plus the person who bought it paid by cash and can not obtain the receipt from the store, what can I do , ? Thanks
I have experienced thos with my SGT on several occasions. I just let it charge a while, then press the power button down for a minute plus. It usually starts up. If not, I let it charge a bit longer and try again. Seems to be happening ever since I put pershoot's kernel on my tab. Maybe I need to update it?

The "sleep of death" is an issue in honeycomb itself. Pershoot's kernel should fix this not cause it. You should always use the latest version of his kernel, he works hard to fix these issue for us. Since kernel flashing takes all of two minutes there is not reason not too.
This thread is a double post.
I have experienced it two times with 10.1 Wifi and stock rom. It just would not turn on. Tried all combination. I've then waited five minutes, tried again, and it worked. It booted and the battery was at 98%. This is a really scary bug!
this happened to me before
unplug it from the charger and keep pressing on the power buttons until you see the samsung galaxy tab logo

[Q] Screen goes black

Hi, sometimes while I am using my phone, the screen turns off on its own, but the touchscreen still works and (obviously) pressing the power button doesn't do anything. I have let it sit this way overnight to see if the problem goes away and it doesn't. I have to remove the battery to make it go back to normal. This problem started about 3 days ago and has gone from happening once a day to about 10 times a day, which is getting me worried. I was running cyanogenmod 7 when the problem started, but I switched to liquid gingersense to see if the problem would still occur and it does. I apologize if this has been discussed already, I did a couple of searches and couldn't find anything that seemed to be my exact problem though.
Sounds to me that u r experiencing bsod(black screen of death). This happen when u leave it sleep and screen doesn't come back on....what u have to do is change ur governor to ondamand and up ur min....and that should work.

I'll give that a try, but I've noticed that it only happens when i'm using the phone. I can leave the phone on all night and it won't happen, but if i use it for like 10 minutes it will.

[Q] Random shutdowns

I've had this phone since the end of October, and recently (within the last 2 weeks), I have noticed that it will just turn off randomly and the power button becomes unresponsive. I have to do a battery pull to get it to power back on. This happens 2-3 times per day.
I have only rooted it; no cfw or anything. Does anyone have this problem or a solution?
Thanks
This happens to me some times as well. I found my cause was when I used miui locker. I'm rooted running latest ICScrewed ROM

Be sure to check the battery level.
I have seen this issue when the battery is defective and
will not hold at least a 15% charge at normal shutdown.
The battery level bar may not be accurate, so you might want to
test it with a new battery.
Good Luck!
Well, once I pull the battery and reboot, the phone works fine again on the same charge. It will work for 2 days on the same charge; it just turns off several times. I guess it would be easier to buy another battery than go through the hassle of dealing with a Samsung RMA or AT&T.
I use JuiceDefender if that would make any difference.
My girlfriend and I had the same issue and it turned out to be widget locker, so if you use that it may be the cause.

It's a Sleep of Death.
Are you undervolting?
If on the stock kernel, are you using SetCPU?
Long-press of power (more than 10-15 seconds) should reset you without a battery pull.

Had the same issue, I a fit of frustration I removed a bunch of apps all at once, and the problem went away. I suggest removing apps that you have recently downloaded till you find what's causing the issues.
Symptoms describe what entropy suggested. (sleep of death).
Tried a factory reset yet? You could go app by app as well till you find the culprit.

I got frustrated and removed a bunch of apps all at once like hd779 did, as well as disabled juicedefender. I have not messed with the cpu or voltage. I did all this last night and it hasn't died yet, so maybe something worked.
Thanks for the tips.
Did you install the recent update, my issue did not start until I installed it, but like I said I uninstalled a bunch of apps all at once so I could not indentify which app it was, my hypothesis is there is an app or apps out there that do not play nice with the latest update.
I did not have the update installed. As a matter of fact, the thing won't update. I've tried about 5 times and it keeps rebooting and telling me that the update was interrupted and it just gives up.
I'm going to turn on juicedefender later today to see if that was the culprit.

I have a similar issue and the solution you provided worked every time. Is there any way to get rid of this? I am using CM7.1.
When I take my phone to use, screen wouldn't switch on pressing power button. Only way to resolve would be to long press power button and it restarts. I never had to do a battery pull. Doesn't happen frequently. May be 4-5 times over 2-3 months time period.
I just recently installed setcpu and tried changing min and max frequencies. But I have encountered this issue even before installing this app.
I used to use Load Monitor to fix the Sleep of Death issue. But ever since rooting, changing to Entropy's kernel, loads of battery optimizations, Llama configurations (not sure what did it), the Sleep of Death problem has gone away and I can do without the Load Monitor app.

Grab the contents of /proc/last_kmsg after you've rebooted with a long press of power. (Hopefully the CM7.1 kernel supports ramconsole. I've been so busy patching up to update3 that I haven't had a chance to coordinate with those guys.)

Is my Galaxy hardware fried? Question about constant reboots.

So last week my phone started acting a bit strange. The side power button began not functioning properly. Basically - when I press the button to turn the screen off it is unresponsive 90% of the time, or it will load the "Shut-Down Menu" on even the slightest touch. Furthermore, my phone will constantly just shut off. Sometimes this happens when I am using the phone or other times when I'm just trying to turn the screen off the whole phone will just shut down.
There seems to be no constant circumstance that makes the phone shut off, it happens all the time!
I have had it ROMed for the last several months and the ROM I was using at the time it started had absolutely no issues at all. I upgraded to a JB ROM a few days ago and the SAME problem is still there.
Even further, when I am in the CWM Recovery the Power Button (which is used for Enter) is a bit funky (works about half the time) and it will STILL force shut down in CWM.
Also, this happens when phone is plugged in so I don't think it's a battery thing?
Does this seem like a software or hardware problem.... thanks for the thoughts.

It appears it is a hardware problem with solely the power button. When you press and hold the power button, it will reboot the system without warning, so it could be constantly "depressing" the power button.

Yeah that would make sense... ughhh...
Well, I guess it's a good excuse to get the S3.

Haha quite possibly! I'd try calling AT&T and maybe see if you can get a refurb if it's under warranty.
Same thing started happening to mine. The power buttons ****ed. Yesterday, it stopped working almost completely. I'm sending it in for warranty tomorrow. It was a ***** trying to reset the phone in recovery after flashing stock, I had to press the power button repeatedly to get the click the register and it powered down a few times.
If you can't get it fixed under warranty. Do a search for power switch problems on captivate. The switch on that phone has the same problems. I have cleaned my captivate power switch a few times using contact cleaner and it works good. Sorry I'd post a link but I'm using the phone app now.
