Hey guys I'm having trouble with the com.motorola.contacts force closing on me.
I recently ported the alien theme to the latest stock rom.
Now I'm getting that error and I'm not sure why I changed the contacts apk back to stock and it worked until I added my social networks and now it crashes again.
Any ideas on why this is happening? Maybe I need to change the setup apk back to stock also....trying to avoid that and yes I wiped the cache and all even factory rest via bootstrap
Thanks guys
You might have removed some of the other dependencies - such as the blur yahoo package, etc

the physical apk no everything is in its place only things I took out are the sprint apks
At first my text messaging would not vibrate alert me until I removed the moded apk and added the stock. I'm trying to figure why some stuff is flipping out and the rest aren't

I am having the EXACT same error with my contacts today and I have done nothing to phone except one click root and that has never caused me any problems with my contacts.

A heads up all. I found my problem. I installed the new Google+ 2.0 that is supposed to be for Ice Cream Sandwich. I just uninstalled it and my contacts work again.
Thanks it worked. Makes me think ics is gonna have integrated g+ support

This didn't work for me!
did you remove one of the social apps? " think it is "social sharing" that is needed to touch onto a contact while in messaging.
You having any luck over on your end Bro? Or still getting the FC's?
Ever figure this out? Mine happened after I tried moving the social apps out of the apps directory. Moved them back in and fixed permissions...same force close. Did a couple factory resets including internal storage and with the phone clean after that it still force closes! Not sure what else to try now.
Not to jack this thread, where can I find the old Google+ at? My phone was perfect until 2.0! Now I, like you, have problems with that Social Networking. 1. I cannot even add Google+ to it! 2. SPB 3d Shell sometimes freezes when I pass the panel with Social Networking on it.
The only thing different between this phone and replacement is Google+ and I can tell by the new red icon!

I had this happening to me and did the factory reset even through the stock recovery, but that didn't help. The only thing that worked to get it back was install the stock SBF. After that contacts worked again.
I was able to narrow done my problem to when I froze the Desk Home app in Titanium Backup. Then instantly I got the contacts force close error. Now it doesn't work again, even if I unfreeze the Desk Home app.
I will try again to see if I can reproduce the problem the way I did it.
I got this issue for a while after using Titanium Backup to "freeze" the Yahoo authenticator, and Yahoo Contacts on a stock (rooted) rom. After defrosting them the contacts came back. Props to Pete720 for the idea.
I deleted the yahoo and sprint apks and my contacts apk is fc how can i get them back
One friendly tip, next time use Titanitum Backup to Freeze the applications instead of deleting them. After a reboot they will appear invisible to the phone (not starting, not hogging any RAM) but for situations like this you can Unfreeze them to make them work again
Yahoo Contacts is not a dependency, Contacts work fine with frozen Yahoo Contacts. I tried tried freezing/unfreezing back and forth a bit and to me it seems like Motorola Contacts depends on all the Authenticator apk's, even if you don't use them. I only use Corporate Sync and Google Accounts but had to unfreeze all Authenticator apps to make the Contacts work again.
You will need all the com.motorola.blur.provider apk's. I don't know if I can help you since I have a Defy+ running 2.3.6 (there might be apk differences) but let me know if you don't find anything anywhere else and I could try to extract the apk's for you as a last resort
im getting forced closing on (com.motorola.phone),,,any idea what causes that
had that force close on phone issue b4... when i wasnt on a diff from ##data# and reset data profile fixed it just fine. when i had it happen on cm9 i just wipped phone 2 times and the format system thing and re installed rom and all was fixed.
Problem:
I cannot add/delete/edit/open any of my contacts using the stock contacts manager. I get the force close on the (proccess com.motorola.contacts).
Phone setup:
Unlocked and rooted
Superuser, Busybox, CPU tuner, CWM v5.0.0.6, RomRacer as well (all free versions)
System 4.5.91.MB860.ATT.en.US (2.3.4)
radio N_01.77.37P
kernel Faux .024
OK... Before the flames are turned on... Yes I have tried lots of the "solutions" to this and NO, they did not work.
Backtrack.
I froze the updater to stop the 15 minute reminder about the OTA. I believe that was when this started, I am not entirely sure since I do not often add/edit contacts.
I unfroze the updater, restart, no change
I had tried to use the Yahoo mail client, saw something about it... reloaded it and unloaded it. restart no change
I've since loaded the Go contacts/dialer... No edit function there either, at least it does not crash.
So, What I think I need to do, and have not found anywhere, is to replace the Contacts files from a blank/stock system and then repopulate the data from an import.
Has this been done? Does anyone know how to do this?
Also, I am fine doing it manually via whatever needs to be done... and I can follow instructions.

Yahoo is a system app with the official build, so downloading Yahoo and installing it wont work. Try pulling it from a 2.3.4 build and pushing the apk to your phone. This is why using TiBu to backup and freeze apps is good.

Factory reset and flash rom or titanium backup restore might work

There are a number of apps which cause contacts to FC when you try to add or edit e contact. They are all tied in to contacts. You may not see an issue until you try to add or edit a contact. If you have FC with add or edit contact, best to unfreeze everything, then go through freezing apps one at a time until you start to get FC again, then you know what apps give the problem. I know Yahoo and/or Yahoo authenticator can be one which causes the FC problem if frozen or uninstalled.
Frozen
As said before.... The only thing I ever froze was the Updater.
Installed (crashed system) and removed Skype
Installed and removed Yahoo mail
Nothing else...
I am looking for a way to remove/replace the contact files and database, install a system new/empty structure and repopulate it, if at all possible.
If, from what attention I've gotten is true, apparently, there is no way to do this short of a full system wipe and restart...
Am I correct?
You could import from a VCard format. The following may help if I understand what you are looking for correctly:
http://code.google.com/p/vcardio/
If your contacts come from your Google account, you would have to disable syncing of contacts there, (or from wherever else they are coming from), and then delete them manually. Then you could import the new contact database.
I'll give it a go...
CaelanT.... Thanks, I'll look at what you gave me and see if it will work.
Just tried GB_AtrixMix_v1_by_otogy2002 - 2.3.6 STOCK ROM this weekend and I was able to fully edit the contacts. So my nagging assumption was correct, it is the contacts application in the stock 4.5.91... en.us rom that is the culprit, not actually my contacts themselves.
So, again, short of dropping another ROM on it and having to reload my applications (not really trusting of backup and restore of apps into a different ROM)...
Does anyone know how to fix my issue?
Do you have any apps that you have frozen?

There lies the problem. I did the same and nothing would work to fix. Had to rsd lite the stock sbf to get it working again. I was stocked rooted only, no unlocked bootloader at the time, running the stock rom/radio/kernel that came installed on the phone.
I was hoping there is someone somewhere who will read this and know how to replace the contacts application in the .91 ATT US stock ROM... I may have to ask, dare I say it.... Motorola support, and not mention the rooted and unlocked part...

Basically the Blur Contacts app calls on a ton of other dependant apks such as yahoo, activesync, work contacts and so forth. And not having one of these apks will lead to FCs when trying to edit a contact. So like previous users said, do not freeze or uninstall any of these or else you'll mess it up. If it has contact in the name or is associated with a service that syncs contacts let it be.
OK...
I guess I'll just bang around some ROM's until I find one I like and wait out ICS from Motorola for us.

If you has not fixed it yet let me know .I had the same problem cause I uninstalled yahoo contacts 2.3.6 and had the same problem as you.But fortunately I made a back up before uninstalling so I installed it again and the problem solved.please email me at mh.mithun AT Gmail . com if you need the app.
Anyone else having this problem? In my Recent Calls list there are only 4 out of 75 that shows my contact's name & image. The rest just say (unknown) and have the number listed. I looked at these 4 contacts to see what makes them different and I see no obvious differences that would make them somehow poll differently. I've had this issue since I got this phone and am finally fed up with it.
Another problem I'm having that may or may not be related is that when I type on the number pad to search for contacts via number or name... it doesn't work. When I start typing characters of someone's name the results just dwindle down w/o rhyme or reason. For instance, if I type my wife's name... nothing. If I type Chis I end up with three contacts with the name of Chris. That's nice but I have 8 contacts with the name of Chris. When I type any other name there is no results. Coincidentally if I type one of the 4 contacts from the problem above they will show up.
It appears as though there is some sort of disconnect between HTC's phone stuffs and my actual contacts and what not. Is there a cache I can clear or something to get this to work? Some sort of setting to get this to function properly?
Thanks for the help.

Stock ROM, rooted and unlocked bootloader. Contacts are linked to Google, not Facebook. As for cache & davlik... I have had this phone for a while now and this problem has existed since day 1. I have cleared them both for other issues and the problem remains so I don't think that is going to solve it as it hasn't yet. I appreciate the tip though.

Have you tried unlinking your google account and relinking it? Are you on the latest update from sprint (2.13 RUU)? have you fixed permissions?
This happened in 1.22 as well, its a problem with their contact linking. As soon as I linked Google plus and Facebook sense merged the info and disregarded the Google contact info, I had to reset and the numbers came back with out the actual info unless I opened their contact info. When I re linked Google plus and Facebook they came back

Yeah, I also had to do that for another problem so I know it's been done in the past yet this problem remains. I think most of the 'usual' stuff has been tried prior to starting this thread.

I'm on 1.13 still. I don't have Google+ or Facebook linked though as I didn't want to deal with all that mess and the people I actually wanted in my contacts I enter manually into my Google contacts. I don't think this is the cause of my issues.
It sounds like the exact same issue except you haven't linked any info. Maybe it'll be addressed whenever the next update comes. I didn't have this problem until after the second update

I may jump to CM10 once it's final as there's still a few minor bugs that I don't want to live with. In the meantime I just want to get this stupid call history bug fixed. Is there something specific I can clear the cache of or detach and reattach that might resolve this? I did plenty of Google searches and I see some people talking about factory resets but then half of those say that doesn't even work. The last thing I want to do is a factory reset and that is if it was even a know fix for this issue.
It's a bug in sense as far as I could tell, perhaps installing a different dialer from the market that integrates history and contacts will help
Something else I noticed today since I uninstalled GoSMS and went back to the stock SMS app... my contacts aren't showing up in my conversation list or the main screen. Only a couple of them show a picture and name and the rest are all the phone number only. This is especially annoying when I want to find someone in my conversation list to send a text message to because I have no idea who is who. This bug is driving me nuts.
Well, today I found a work around... sorta. If you go into each contact and then set default action under individual settings for each contact (yes... each one) so that the default method is a text message (calling may work too... haven't checked). Once I did this my contacts had images and names in the call log and the messages. I did notice that while I was doing this the first two I did had to be done again for some reason so I don't really know what is going on, what this fixes or ho long it may or may not last but if anyone else finds this... here's a possible fix.
Nope... still doesn't work. I thought I found this band-aid fix to make it work but after a few days it went back to not being linked. No contacts photos and no names. Just a bunch of phone numbers in my SMS list and my call log. This is very frustrating. Is there a cache I can clear or something other than the phone's main cache and dalvik? Is there an app in my app list or two that I can clear the cache of to get this to reload properly? I don't want to go back to GoSMS (too much spam and too much fluff) and it doesn't fix my call log anyway.
You could try clearing data from contacts storage in app settings or the 3 people apks then resync and see if that helps

Why would I need to fix permissions if I'm on the stock ROM? I thought that was only something you needed to do if you changed ROMs, no?
Not necessarily, if you do something as simple as restore a backup with titanium you might have to fix permissions, if you format internal and restore apps, you might have to fix permissions. If you change something in the Rom like remove bloat, it might affect other apps and you might have to fix permissions.
There's contact storage, then you have people, its broken down into 3 seperate pieces. Each one is responsible for different features like contact linking and contact sync from other accounts

I've rooted an unlocked... that's about it. If this could be my problem then I need to know how to fix it. Also, I get an error message whenever I open Titanium Backup saying that my device ID has changed and it asks if I wanted to change it back. I keep putting that off because I had hacked DropBox to get like 77gb of storage using the LTE Evo and then the SGS3 hack. After an update it lost the SGS3 storage space so I was going to look into this again and how my device ID applied before I did anything. I'm to the point now where I don't even care about the DropBox thing anymore and should probably figure out how to proceed with this whole device ID thing that TiBackup keeps warning about. Not sure if that could have any relation to this problem but seems like it could so that's why I just mentioned it.

I found that on the new roms this was not necessary anymore, but making sure your APNs are correct was a more accurate fix.

mysms is the best of the best! But! it has become finicky with KK. Here's how to fix.
1.) KK requires you to have a specified default SMS, it must be mysms for mysms to work.
2.) For mysms to work you MUST use your gmail account as your login both on the phone and on your computer/s. Why, because of the KK required specified default SMS you need your google gmail account to 'wake the phone up' even when you're sending from your computers, pads etc.
3.) I also did a complete uninstall / re-install. It's working as it should.
This will help!

Hello All,
I'm pretty experienced with Android and flashing new software and all that, but I am at my wits end this time. Last week I installed a ROM on my Sprint HTC One M7 that had hangouts as the default SMS app. I hate hangouts, so I installed a third party app. I only ended up having that ROM installed for a day or two before flashing a new one, and suddenly I couldn't receive SMS. I tried tons of things before finally ending up running the RUU to flash back to stock. Since hangouts is in the stock ROM, as soon as it booted, all of my texts popped up right there in hangouts, where they had been being diverted the whole time, despite SMS being turned off in Hangouts.
This time, I updated Hangouts, toggled SMS on and then off again, but all of my incoming texts were still going to Hangouts and not appearing in my stock SMS app at all. Finally, I flashed an updated stock rooted ROM, and no matter what I try, I cannot get Hangouts to stop handling my incoming texts. This is absolutely infuriating, because as aforementioned, I'd rather lobotomize myself with a chopstick than use Hangouts. Has anyone else encountered this? Please help me!
Thanks!

Go into the application manager, find Hangouts, and clear defaults. If you don't use it for anything else, you can always disable/delete it.

Duplicate installation, perhaps? I had this weird thing going on the other day where Titanium did an automatic restore after flashing a batch install of backups, and I had 2 iterations of Weather Bug (different versions). There have also been times where certain sideloaded apps had 2 iterations installed.
Try using a root file explorer and searching for for Hangouts. Maybe there's an .apk somewhere that still loads up even though it's not "installed" anymore.

No Gapps packages, no batch restores? Maybe Google is doing it automatically when you first activate the phone. You're given the option to backup/restore your account, and if you do, the phone will start downloading apps that you had installed before.

Hmmmmm, that's one thing I did not think about, is using the Google restore feature when fresh installing. I did flash GAapps with the Lollipop Build but immediately disabled Hangouts. I wonder if maybe the setting isn't being applied "behind the scenes" when I flash a new ROM and allow Google to automatically restore settings. I'll have to play with this a bit. Thanks again.

That could be it. Installed, then disabled, then installed again automatically. If the restore is coming from a different source from Play Store, it's possible it's not making the same checks for existing installations, giving you a duplicate.

Man, I am really about to pull my hair out with this whole thing. I just installed a new ROM deleted Hangouts from system/app using root explorer after denying the auto-restore for Google and I still couldn't receive texts. Rebooted. Sent myself a few more test texts before re-installing hangouts and lo and behold, Hangouts had been receiving the texts even while not installed on any android device that I own. If Hangouts was a building, I would have looted it and burned it to the ground about an hour ago.

Yeah, I think I have managed to find some super strange bug or something, I don't know. Thanks anyway for your multiple attempts.
What phone/app are you sending the texts from?

Did you figure it out yet?
Did you check under the main settings for default sms app? Also your not using Google restore option are you?

I was wondering if you had any luck finding what causes all the text to go to hangouts. I can receive MMS through messenger but not SMS. I thought I was the only person with this annoying problem. I was about to order another device but there has to be a solution to this problem.

Dray,
I did eventually solve it, though the problem persisted even after RUU. It turns out that the issue was with Google Voice. I don't use Google Voice, but I flashed a ROM that had SMS turned on in Google Voice by default. When I flashed a new ROM, sms was still being handled by Google Voice despite neither Voice nor Hangouts being installed on my phone. You should go into settings in Google Voice and make sure sms is turned off. If the app is not installed on your phone, download it and make sure it is turned off anyway, because as aforementioned it was affecting my sms even though Google Voice wasn't even installed. This should solve it.
