I have never in my life read an article with so many words, that is saying nothing. I read it three times just to make sure and .... still nothing, lot of hot air. Motorola you are really making no sense anymore .... what is wrong with you .... not even capable of finding a good excuse anymore .... pathetic, really.

and with this here is the fall of my beloved giant MOTO in the ring... and gladly i am moving forward with other players here...
I would rather like to have a pretty decent phone with the same (or i can say advanced) hardware and steal and plastic body by HTC or Sony, instead of this ultra cool Kevlar jacket n slim sexy waistline by a company who is continuously yelling at me "I-FCUKED-YOU-AGAIN".
really guys i don't know, firstly there was the greed for money(with the DEV UL edition) for that unlockable bootloader issue, now it i-dont-know-how hardware issue for delayed ICS announcement and lol who knows next time when i might ring up moto's customer care for some hardware issue's then there may be a weather problem(it might be too sunny or too frosty to look at my problem that time).
really hasta-la-vista baby.
Unlock our bootloader, ICS will come faster.
watch next week they will say that they have ICS running on the razr but you have to buy a new razr for it to work.
Motorola...why..do..you..do..this? I own a Motorola Xoom and it's not like this, there is already ICS for US version and EU verison to follow. I am looking to buy a Razr but after reading the forum and now this I am very sceptical. It's good if Razr get the update beyond 4.0

NOOO.. if samsung released the RAZR then there would be no "ultra cool Kevlar jacket n slim sexy waistline" as BSOD said.. and it would be "cheap looking plasticky smartphone" instead..
jk..
One of the key features of ICS is supposed to be that it uses hardware acceleration, i.e. it utilises the hardware, rather than the software wherever possible.
Sure, you could get a version of ICS quickly that won't run optimally on the RAZR hardware. But what is the point of that? I would rather give them a month or two more, and have something that utilises the RAZR chipset properly, which will lead to a better user experience and better battery life.
@milesg
The ICS beta that I've leaked can use HW acceleration just fine (and fast).
The only missing thing is WebTop, but it has even got MotoCast/Blur.

Well Webtop is hardware... perhaps they've been having problems getting that to work with the h/w acceleration...
Motorola know that getting ICS onto RAZR and RAZR MAXX will sell a load more handsets, so why would they not be working as hard as possible to get this update ready? They don't have a handset running 4.0, so it's not like they are doing this to push some other new thing, they will be losing money to the Gnex (and the SGSII from March...)
I read it differently I guess. No where in that blog post did I read "no hope" for ICS on the Razr. It made sense to me that Motorola would have to tweek things and then turn it over to VZW and let them add on all their bloat on top of Motorola's bloat. Then all of VZW's different markets have to be tested as well. When will VZW even allow the update is anybodys guess. Maybe VZW has decided they want to sell more Galaxy Nexus phones before releasing ICS on Razr. They may have requested Motorola to just sit on it for now, who knows. But I imagine VZW will do things in a time frame that will put the most money in their pockets, and if that is delaying ICS in the hopes that all of us Razr users will dish out more money and buy the Galaxy Nexus just to get ICS, they'll wait. I expect when the sales of new Galaxy Nexus flattens out, or the pre-purchased supply begins to dwindle, suddenly ICS will show up for several devices.
I tend to blame Verizon more so than Motorola.
its just moto saying they cant get blur to work on ICS >_>

So why aren't they unlocking bootloaders knowing that they will make the GNex sales to CRASH?
....Same reply
And anyway, HW acceleration is actually working fine on the current ICS release and the X11 drivers are another whole thing. Even if HW acceleration wasn't working on ICS, it will work on X11.
Oh, obviously I haven't forgot that ICS is based on Linux 3.0 but anyway there isn't any _REAL_ reason for HW acceleration to be not working on X11.
Drivers from 2.6 are easily portable to 3.x and TI has already ported everything. (OMAP Drivers porting isn't Moto's job)

A lot more people buy the GNex for ICS than the bootloader - if they wanted a phone that was good for custom ROMs, they have a wealth to choose from.
If they want a phone in Europe or NA that is shipped running 4.0, they have one choice... GNex.
We'll get ICS, I'm sure, but it might take a month or two longer.

I find it interesting how an update hasn't been issued in months, and the leaked update (198_7) never ended up being officially released. I wonder if that means either Moto has given up updating the phone or they are waiting for a newer GB or ICS build to release?
I'm very happy with my Photon with 198_7, although I have received the muted auto issue a few times that I thought Moto had fixed.
This is typical behavior. Updates don't typically happen every couple of months with android. There's a huge gap between them and its always been this way where have you been? Moto isn't focusing on updating gingerbread anymore there aren't major issues with our phone just minor. Their main focus is ice cream on newer devices including the photon. Again, manufacturers have always been silent about updates unless its a pure Google device i.e nexus, nexus s. Moto is hard at work right now to bring us some official ics real soon. My guess is some time before spring break (March-ish) not to forget stupid sprint still has to approve it which could take a month or two :rolls eyes:

Sprint won't be stupid if they wait a month or two testing ICS before an offical OTAP. They've learned from past OS OTAPs that careful QA/QC of OS upgrades are manadtory for the best customer experience.
I for one am not worried whether not we get any updates of gingerbread. The only problem I ever had with this phone with random restart in that was cured with 198_7. As for ice cream sandwich I'm not worried whether not moto pushes out a build. I think ice cream sandwich itself is flawless and should not be skinned. I will be happy with a fully functional cm 9.

The Atrix Hd has been released for ATT and the Electrify has been released for US Cellular. Both of these phones have been given ICS in the stock form, i don't know about the boot loader but my thought is that with them both being Motorola and both of them being close to the photon, if we were to get a dump from one of them if not both of them we would be able to get the drivers and everything else that we would need to make all of the custom roms that are having camera issues and stuff get fixed. Has anyone taken a look at them and seen if we can use them?

there has to be a way we can get the drivers and stuff if Motorola isn't going to update us to ics any time soon. Hopefully if the two phones i posted don't work maybe the grand x can do the trick . According to Bill, he and Joker tried to implement the Grand X libs before but had trouble doing so. He informed me he was going to take a second look at it when it comes back from vacation. That phone seems to be our best bet at the moment. It's probably a lost cause though, unless Moto backs out for whatever reason those ICS drivers should be dropping for the Atrix very very soon.

I will be waiting for either patiently
well a couple of weeks ago i asked this question and i was comparing things between some devices and thank you guys you helped me figure a lot of things out and i finally decided that iam getting the atrix 4g no doubt it's an awesome super powerful phone but how bad is it to buy an outdated phone " almost 1.5 years old " ? and i also wanted to know if there is any chance that Motorola will abandon releasing the ics update ? !! beacuse as bad as i wanna wait for the update to come out before i buy the device i can't soo if you told me that it's 100% sure the the update is coming out iam buying the phone next week ... and some thing ealse i wanted to clarify i read on the motorolla website that the update coming in Q3 2012 is just for at&t and i live in egypt so obviously there is no at&t here and from what i understand i won't be able to update OTA and i just wanted to know what will be the availlable options for me then to update rather than waitng for the international update which has no specified date yet ? !!! and something more does the Atrix 4g has any common hardware problems as i'll be bootloader unlocking my phone maybe 2 weeks after i get it ( i mean because of voiding the warranty and this stuff ) ?
and thank i guys again in advance u rock :good:
You need to search around a bit more next time. These answers are relatively easy to find:
-I think the general consensus is that people here are happy with their phones but if you can spend more to get a phone with better specs, not potentially have a problem buying an Atrix with a locked bootloader, not have to deal with a company like nvidia, etc. then you might want to look elsewhere.
-There is NO proof that Motorola WON'T release ICS. There are still several other phones that fall in the Q3 schedule that also haven't been updated and we're still in Q3. Even if there's a small chance it won't be released, there's still the chance that drivers from other phones can be used to stabilize an Atrix rom.
-If you're already talking about unlocking the bootloader then you should know by now that OTA is completely irrelevant. You can flash the update as you would any other rom.
-Digitizer and wifi/bluetooth issues seem to be the biggest hardware problems. Unlocking a bootloader on any phone will void the warranty, but it's been the experience of many people that Motorola will still repair phones under warranty anyway. Every you decision you make, from buying a phone to crossing the street, is at your own risk.

The common belief is that nvidia is the one holding up the drivers for Moto to use for ICS.
You'll probably find a few other threads (in fact, there's another one right on this page) where people will compare phone XYZ to the Atrix so you can see the benefits and disadvantages. It all depends on which specific phone you're comparing, as well as what exactly you need from your phone. Like anything else, this phone has several things few or no other phones have but also might fall short (screen, processor speed, etc.) in others. It's up to you to figure out what you need.
The good thing is that this community is surprisingly active, even for a phone that came out last year.
I'm not gonna quote all of that, but once AT&T releases ICS then EVERYONE will have it on CM9/10.
We only want ICS for the drivers to put into CM, and other custom ROMS. Trust me nobody here wants stock bloat...

I have Epinter's unofficial CM10 running on my Atrix 4G, the only reason I'm still anticipating the official ICS update is for the driver developers can use to get hardware acceleration working on CM10 :crying:
So as I understand it, the Photon has drivers issues which is why we dont have a port of for instant a droid bionic version of moto ICS, or moto jellybean. I am wondering what we need to get a kernel going. If this happened this would open up the possibility for doing webtop on a non stock rom.(Which I really would love cm 10.1 with ubuntop) I have been using linux for many years and am familiar with compiling and modifying kernels and packages I am just still new with android I came from the Epic 4G. I just would like to be pointed in the right direction or maybe someone who already makes kernels has attempted this and we could work together.
Thanks for your time.
You need source from Motorola and whatever company it was that Apple bought. You can try the Compendium thread for kernel links but as of now a new kernel is highly unlikely.
So then maybe we should look into writing our own? I mean if they can do it why can't we?

There's a thread over in the Atrix 4G forums where some people are working on a port from the Galaxy R kernel. You may want to follow that thread and offer your assistence there, because chances are that any progress that benefits the Atrix will benefit the Photon in the long run.

In theory that is sound, but the Atrix has a much newer kernel version than ours from the start (not sure how that happened with our device being more recent release). If you're planning to try, make sure that you have device protection or a good number of devices to work with....they've already hard bricked one or two from what I had seen.
What drivers are required, and I assume you mean for a 3.x kernel?

maybe, jut maybe some day it will be leaked.
after the screwing Moto gave us he might as well post it. wtf are they gonna do? lock our damn phones?
My guess is it just never panned out and the guy didn't want to disappoint us. This was around the time of the Atrix leak, and that never amounted to anything, and a bunch of people got let down. It's my theory, which is far from concrete, that the leak included Photon files as well, that also never amounted to anything, but less was said here, so fewer people will be let down. I'm personally not worried. Come whatever may. My phone may not be able to do MMS or camcorder, or run Chrome or Swiftkey Flow, but I like it. It does the things I want it to. And it looks sexy as hell. I'd appreciate this mystery kernel or whatever, but I'm not gonna lose sleep if some mad scientist is holding out. Not saying that's what cybik is (I actually don't know much about him), just saying neither of the two extremes affect me much. And they shouldn't affect y'all either. If you're locked I'm sorry, that sucks, so is my brother, but you can run Holo Launcher/Locker and use either utter!, Maluuba, or Dragon Go! for voice commands/personal assistant, Notification Toggle for, well, the toggles, and Dolphin for your browser, and that puts you fairly close to Android 4. Motoblur can't keep a WiFi lock to save its life, but there are apps for that... I'm trying to test one on my wife's phone, but I'm not getting very good data from it. If you're unlocked, you have a lot of good choices as it is.
I may be an Atrix owner, but if the 2.6.39.4 kernel that is being dev'd for the Atrix is a success, couldn't you take the post-dev'd 2.6.39.4 kernel and port it to the Photon?

There's really no point in making roms since its on 4.0.4 make a rom jellybean hits then devs have to rebase and remake there whole rom so might as well wait.. hopefully its true though chus this is a really nice device to not have any support/roms

Stop whining about AT&T and do something about it. As in, try the Original Android Development forum. We have AOSP, AOKP, and CM10.1 mostly functional. I agree some more ROMs would be neat, but really, what are you so desperate for?
That said, I have an honest question: Aside from maybe PA, what are we still missing out on ROM-wise? 30 reskins of AOKP?
Edit: Sorry about the tone, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who's sick of seeing this thread over and over again. Official 4.1.2 will come when it comes, but why not run an 80% functional 4.2.2 today?

I bet all the money in the world that if this device had htcs name on it or samsung this phone would be filled with roms and support. But no that's not the case just chus its lg and so many ppl hating on lg it has lack of support that's all I'm saying with this awsome device it has potential to have way more support

Stop whining about AT&T and do something about it. As in, try the Original Android Development forum. We have AOSP, AOSP, and CM10.1 mostly functional.

X2. There's a fully functioning 4.1.2 that SnowLeopardJB created, in addition to the ones mentioned above. The 4.2.3 roms don't have fully functioning GPS or camera, but they will have them shortly. Synergye's created an AOSP rom, that's using the latest Android developments, that will put this device ahead of the N4, once the quirks are worked out. Reskins aren't ROM's, so leaving that nuance out, what ROM are you looking for that you can't run today?
One addition: If you bought this phone thinking that AT&T was going to support it, you didn't do your research. Apple and Samsung are the only devices that receive any support from AT&T. That's because the former does it's own device support and the latter has enough market share that they can enforce their will on AT&T.

Have you? Last time I checked converting your phone into a nexus 4 is a mod not a rom and if you check again there's only 2 roms available that's currently about up to date everything else has stoped, that's what I ment with more support/roms.yeah I can see there roms available but for this device I think it deserves way more support than that

yes i have. i have jelly bean on my LGOG right now and it is fully functional. you're saying there's no support or roms out for this device when that just isnt true. there's even a 4.2.2 rom out that can do everything except camera and GPS. and those will be fixed soon. so what i'm saying is if you say there's little support then you just arent seeing everything in this forum that is out. if you refuse to flash jelly bean on your phone right now then that's the choice you make to stick with ICS. you have the chance to get jelly bean on your LGOG right now, you're just deciding not to.

That was the core of my question. AOSP, AOKP, CM10.1, and ParanoidAndroid are the only major ROMs I've heard of, and we have all but the last one. This is my first Android device, so I wasn't sure if there was really something big we were still missing.
As for why this phone if I knew AT&T sucked? I needed a new phone when there was still no idea when the Nexus 4 would come back in stock, so I got what was thought to be the next best thing. Honestly, with AOSP, this will be even better than the N4 once the GPS and camera are working.
And I can always convert a year down the road when everyone moves on.

As you've said in your other thread, you are new to this phone. Which means others have had this phone for a while. Whatever question(s) you might have probably has been asked and answered or at least discussed before already.

Correction: you are whining. Most of us love the device for A) basically being a suped up nexus B) first proper krait device with an sd card slot on att and C) for being really cheap on contract

Correction:saying what I want to say in my opinion is not whining in the comandments that's called "freedom of speech" not whining. You have a problem with that go rewrite the comandment with whining instead of freedom of speech chus I'm just stating my own opinion
Commandments? Are you referring to the Bill of Rights? You do know that that same freedom of speech is also extended to anyone who wants to say you are whining, right?
Anyway, enough of the childish back and forth. As stated myriad times in this forum, as is usually the case, no one knows for sure when we'll get JB from AT&T. We have some great devs working on giving us fully functional CM, AOKP and CFX. Patience is a virtue, and we'll be getting some more love soon.
In the meantime, what's missing from the stock experience? You want Google Now? You can get it. Other than that it's just as smooth as JB.

But when you're opinion is wrong, then that would be considered either a) not knowledgable of the facts, or b) whining...as others have said, if you want 10 different versions of AOSP or CM10.1, or 15 versions of the current kernel, then this may not be the phone for you. I could say that my opinion is that the sky is red, but just because I've stated that's my opinion doesn't make it correct. The current version of JB on this device works 100% and is smooth as any phone I've ever used...ever (and I've had all the latest and greatest). You never answered someone's earlier question...what is it exactly that you want that is not being offered at this time?
You may be new to the phone, but you're not new to the forums. So I'm hoping within the last ~2.5 years you've noticed that there's a search feature. Considering this phone has been out for 5-6 months?, correct me if I'm wrong, this question was bound to be asked several times. If you don't want people complaining about your complaining, then it's advised to look through the forums. Feel free to be ungrateful for what the devs of this community has given us, but it's not like you've made anything. If you're in such a hurry, build a rom yourself.
