Amaze battery life Vs. sensation/ gs2 - HTC Amaze 4G

So I'm getting my wife a new phone for valentines day but have a question about battery life. She talks on the phone for hours a day so it needs to last at least most of the day. She likes both the amaze and the sensation as well as the galaxy s2. My question is has there been significant improvements in the battery life of the amaze with Roms and or kernels. Or should I just get her one of the other 2. I know the sensation has some ics Roms out for it. How is the battery life on them? Thanks for any help.

Definitely not the sensation when it comes to battery life. Comparing the Amaze vs the SGS2, sgs2 has a much better life. Sgs2 has a slightly higher battery capacity than the amaze, and touchwiz isn't as a resource-hog as much as senseUI. So for battery life, my vote is go for the sgs2.

Granted I have only had my Amaze for a few days but I have had about the same stock battery life wise on stock ROM for Amaze as I was getting on custom ROM and kernel on GS2.
Battery Life aside if you don't plan on rooting your girl's phone I would suggest the Amaze over the GS2. The stock ROM on the GS2 as is is pretty laggy. The Amaze is pretty snappy.

The lag on the sgs2 home was corrected after the Firmware OTA upgrade to UVKL1 & GB 2.3.6

I have to say the Sensation I have owned alot of phones. The Amaze battery life at the moment is terrible. I lose 30-40% overnight on standby. I was and still am very happy with my sensation on android revolution rom.

I've never used the Galaxy S II so i wouldn't know, but I had a different experience with the sensation, I used the anker battery on my sensation and i'm using the same battery on the amaze (I've never used the stock battery that came with the amaze) and battery life was way better on the sensation, it even stays at 100% alot longer than the amaze, it takes about 3 minutes to go down to 98% (probably software related)

i have two anker 1900ma batteries, plus the stock one. With xboarders custom rom, i get 25-30 hours on the ankers, and 15-20 on the stock. Thats good enough for me, i have wifi on al the time and stream music via bluetoot for 5-8 hours a day, i wouldnt say its horrible batteriy life, people just ned to control their settings, that's what android is about after all isnt it?

If you're losing 30-40% overnight on standby, you're doing something wrong.

[Q] gb battery

I love 4g. but I don't like how 4g loses battery life so fast.
Has anyone noticed battery life changes I'm gb?
You're lucky you have the option.
For me there is a huge difference between battery life of Froyo and GingerBread (assuming that's what you mean). Due to the radio brick possibility, I went back to Froyo (Senseless 1.6.3, now 1.7) and yeah, huge huge difference in battery life. With medium to light usage I can get 24 hours of battery life (and I have 4G). With Gingerbread, I couldn't make it through half of the day but I chalk most of that up to the fact that I had my phone on most of the time looking at the pretty weather animations.
I've gotten great battery life on ginger and horrible battery on froyo

Is the Amaze batter life THAT bad?

Hey All,
I was just wondering if they could post some of their impressions of the Amaze's battery life. According to the engadget's review it's horrid. 5hrs of use? that can't even last half a day. Mind you, the Amaze has a bigger battery than the sensation
(google Engadget Amaze)
I currently have the Sensation and the battery life was "bearable". It was at the limit of what's acceptable for battery life. After I undervolted the cores (-62.5mV), i'm having amazing battery life (10-12 hours of usage with data/email/text/light surfing/calls). If I upgrade to the Anker battery, it's going to be sweet.
I was originally going to upgrade to the Amaze but the battery life scares me. Can anyone so a comparison between the GS2 or post some real-life usage stats of the battery? If it's really that bad, i might just have to get the other option which is the GS2.
I think its normal
the desire hd have that battery live, the sensation too....the amaze have exactly the same battery

I agree. I've had several Androids, and this one seems about average. I can burn through a full charge in 5-6 hours of heavy use, or go all day with the phone mostly on standby. Like any other Android, I charge whenever I have the opportunity. I would love to have the battery life of my BB9780.
that sounds better... engadget made it sound really really bad. I was wondering what was making the phone consume so much power. It's essentially almost the same hardware as the sensation except for a few new upgrades.
does anyone have their battery graph to share?
Usually, I take anything reported by Engadget as not reliable ...
It is very clear that if it is not an Apple product, they will find a way to criticize...

It was true with old blackberries, but if you take Torch and similar to Android or iPhone, you will notice that multitasking is killing a battery phone, as well as its capacitive screen.
Old blaberries were bearing strong battery life, as it was doing nothing in background (and in foreground ... sorry, joking).
BUT, I'm using a Desire (first gen) and waiting to upgrade to Telus Amaze. What I can say, is the ROM, by what it integrates as processes and apps running, is the culprit. I tried Cyanogenmod, then LeeDroid, and depending on the version, one was better than another... for now, last LeeDroid version is GREAT!!!

Gizmodo is far worse than Engadget about this, but Engadget has gotten noticeably skewed lately.
It seems normal to me--same run time as my Vibrant on CM7/Vibrant 4g on custom Froyo/ N1 on Sense. 5 hours? They were hitting it harder than the fist of an angry god. I play music 9 hours straight, games, sms, calls. 9 HOURS.
I personally find it exceptional, especially right out of the box.
I use 25% screen brightness and black background.
2G only.
The only syncs I have are FB, Gmail and Exchange. I've disabled the unnecessary stuff like weather stocks and FB contact integration as well as Picasa sync and I can easily get a full day out of it and come home with 60% battery life left.
I'm not a heavy user but I'm very happy with the battery life. I'm excited to get in and start ditching bloat.
Since you have sensation u can use sensation,s battery for amaze. I bought an anker battery of sensation, it works perfect on my amaze

I have a sensation and a Amaze, the amaze is a much more impressive device and has the best battery life I've seen since I started using the HD2 back in the day. Normal use last me almost a full twenty four hours, with sync mail every two hours/weather. And since it was released about four weeks ago, tmo has already released three updates and told me another is coming very shortly to add the wi fi calling feature, and also stated that HTC will be giving us a new update to take us to ICS.
Compared to the sensation, the amaze is a real peice of hardware, the sensation just feels cheap to me and it's battery is very poor. I'm selling my sensation and keeping the amaze. You'll like it if you get one. Peace. V
Thanks for all the replies! If I can get someone to buy my sensation, i'll be definitely buying the Amaze. I live in canada so unfortunately i can't check it out in person but it sounds like a great piece of hardware.
The only thing i might miss is not having the the SAMOLED on the GS2. Resolution vs. Colour saturation.

I have the Sensation and upgraded to the Amaze last week. I never received any updates. What three Tmo updates are you referring to?
How is it that you are getting a full day on a charge? I have the brightness turned down, all Htc widgets off, and simple use and barely get 10 hours until its down to 20%. It is an improvement over the Sensation but imo, not in the battery department.
Set your network mode to GSM only. There is little to no use to high speed data if it's just idle receiving emails.
I use the Curvefish widget 2g/3g on/off which brings me to that part of the wireless networks menu for easy change so if time is a factor and I want to surf, I'll turn it on.
If that doesn't do it for you, dupliacte some of the settings and see if there is a change.
I did no battery "training" with mine either.
To answer to the thread title:YES, MY BATTERY S***!
I have disabled almost any sync ( left gmail...I buy android only for that) and in 30 minutes my battery passed from 40 to 15. just doing some Skype chats. I can afford two batteries..or plug it while at work..but I unplugged at 4 pm...at 8.30 was at 15% alarm! I went out of office at 6...what could I possibly do wrong? Sgs2...I am coming soon..

Battery life stock OS

I just got my 3D about two weeks ago. First thing I did was get an extended battery. I got the seidio 4000mah. I have gone FOUR days on this battery with normal (for me) usage. I used to have an evo 4g and with the 3000mah battery, I would use about half of it in a day. Now I was using ValPak Rom and every once in a while it would die much faster but mostly got two days. I don't know if it is because I don't have as many apps running (can't remember all that I did have) or if the dual core makes it run better or if the 4000 battery is just that much better, but I get GREAT life now. I am stock so far since I have the 1.5 boot loader. I may root, but would like to find a way to do a full root rather than the HTC method.
Does the 3D just manage the battery better? I am probably going to put the stock battery back in to see what it's life is like.
Bob
Battery life with stock evo3d is just way better than the evo ever was.

The 4000mah battery is the best investment ever. I love it.
I get 2 days (on any ROM) when I use it normally, about 3 days light usage
As for your question.... I'd imagine it handles it better, but also, it is a bigger battery.

[Q] Is the Amaze's battery life inherently bad?

By inherently bad, I mean are there some extra power sucking hardware components that were just poor design choices (processor/screen) and therefore can't be remedied through software fixes?
I understand that the sensation has decent battery life, whereas the amaze does not. Yet the Amaze should have a more recent processor and a larger battery. So I just want to make sure before I buy that if I'm willing to add a custom rom and use juice defender this will make the Amaze no more power hungry than its direct competitors.
Thanks
I'm thinking most of the drain is coming from the extra work caused by Sense. Custom ROMs do help with battery since they are debloated and all but when we have something AOSP, battery life should be much better. I had experience with my old Moto Cliq where Motoblur would just chug battery. It wasn't until we got AOSP or CyanogenMod that the battery life was acceptable. You could also buy an extended battery like Anker. With the ICS leak, I heard some people report better battery due to better management with the dual-core CPU.
To summarize, we can extend battery life greatly. I'm not sure if there are any hardware stuff that causes shorter battery life though.
Sent from my HTC Amaze 4G
It's only bad if your going to play one of the new console quality games out there or anything else that really going to push that dual core 1.5mhz chipset. Imagine powering your laptop with a battery the size of the one in your phone that's what you get. Get a car charger grab a Pocket seized power pack from Amazon for $10th or an extra batt and you'll be fine. Either that or just text make some calls & listen to some music and let all that power chill & you'll make it all day no problem. Push it hard & it's dead in 2hrs. But the things it can do are crazy. This thing has more balls than my laptop. Just my 2 cents.
I don't believe that the Amaze's battery is inherently bad. I was able to get 10 hours off of Beast Rom with moderate usage.
I talk a lot on Skype with my relatives sometimes. It's much cheaper for me because I'm using the T-mobile 5 gigs of 4G at $30. Lots of data but only 100 minutes.
So I'm pretty familiar with the battery life. With the new ICS leak my battery life has improved a lot. Still had a green bar on the battery even after using Skype on 4G for over an hour. I do however keep a charger at home, car and at work.

On stock yeah the battery life is HORRIBLE, I am a average user and it use to last me 6-8 hours and sometimes less. After switching to Energy rom my battery improved GREATLY, I had anywhere between 12 to 16 hours.
With the new ICS leak that came, I notice stock had improved significantly over previous GB stock ! I just switched over to Revolution, checking it out to see how it is although I much prefer the Energy rom simply because of the 5x5 layout.

Wow, thank you for the reassurance. I was getting 6-8 hours as well. I am highly skeptical that a ROM could make that much of a difference, (going from 12-16) but I am happy to try.
I have noticed on some days prior to the pics leak that I would get 10+ hours and some cays I would get maybe 5 Max. Bone stock btw. Since the update I am killing that thing. I was able to go 6 and that was with the radio off, no sync, nothing. Only thing running was a podcast. Then again for the first time I was able to get 12hrs via radio off. I don't know I am personally not too happy with the radio update. Regardless I am glad I have the leak and I'm glad there is a place like this where I am giving so many options and get to learn more about this phone.
Thank you xda members glad you are here

You don't have to be a farmer to know what sh*t smells like.
Well... here's my results
Stock GB Amaze: After 10 hours (with moderate use) I was at 20%
Unlocked bootloader.. installed NRG's GB ROM (still waiting a bit to upgrade to ICS.. mainly waiting for radio issues to be resolved)
Before I had to plug in for the night, I was at 13hrs54minutes with 30% battery left and MUCH MUCH MORE awake/screen time (total screen ON time was at about 3hrs45minutes) than the test with stock..
So yeah, the ROM you're running makes a GIGANTIC DIFFERENCE.
Does the energy gingerbread and the energy ice cream sandwich rom get the same battery life? Have the ICS Roms been maximized for battery life like the gingerbread Roms have?

[Q] What is the best ROM + kernel?

I tried Vigor360, and though I hate Sense, it was.. okay...except battery life was worse than on my Thunderbolt. I've tried flashing different kernels but more problems usually arrise out of the blue and I have NO CLUE which kernels are actually good , good as in they actually male an effort to improve the battery life. I'm currently on a CM9 ROM and holy hell! The keyboard lags and battery life is ATROCIOUS ! I haven't even hardly installed any apps!
I tried Newt's One XXX, v5.1.1 but couldn't stand the minor bugs, but I assume battery life on that ROM is way worse than on Vigor360 (since usually, the higher the version of Sense, the worse it is on the battery) when I had a galaxy Nexus, the picture quality was a joke, but I made it well through the day with it! I'm not getting an extended battery. The phone is thick enough -.-
My current usage is about 7 hours,an hour and a half of screen time, battery is at 7%. I can sort of stand sense 3.6 so long as it isn't theme. What ROM/kernel combo do you guys use to get through the day, or did I make a mistake getting this phone? (No offense)

going to need some things from you:
1. are you s-on or off
2. what firmware are you on
3. do you like sense or aosp more
edit: 7 and 1/2 hours screen time. that is awesome for the REZ. the HD screen is what kills the battery the most. if you can get 7 hours then bravo.
He said he is averaging 7hrs of use with 1.5hrs screen time which is pretty bad. Believe it or not, newts one xxx has probably the best battery life for the rez. I can easily get 14hrs with 3hrs screen time with stock battery. Yesterday I got 17 hrs with 5.5hrs screen time on extended battery. That is probably the best Rom atm and sense 4+ is much more appealing to the eye. All I can say is if you don't like sense, you bought the wrong phone. People will forget about this phone before aosp/aokp is perfected, even though they are making great progress. I can never get any kernels to work right either. Leaving stock kernels is usually best. As with any android phone, you have to work for battery life

Wow!! The big reason I have this phone is.. well..
Had a Nexus, broke it and sold it for $75, relative let me use an iPhone 4... I lasted a week before caving and bought a Thunderbolt for $90.
I couldn't stand the ancient android OS and the phone was having random data drops, so I got Verizon to replace it with another thunderbolt. The replacement had the same issue + the vibrate motor decided when and when not to work. The guy on the phone was like "well, since you've had several replacements of this phone, we're gonna see about sending g you a different phone to resolve your issues once and for all, but the phone you receive won't come with a battery cover or battery." I told him I had a battery cover and battery for a Rezound and asked if that could be sent to me, he said "sure, we should be able to do that."
This phone killed my 32GB microSD card :'(
I have S-OFF. I prefer AOSP, but they seem get get home horrendous battery life.

When asking for help you usually shouldn't trash every kernel/rom made available to us by our hard working devs. Also, your theory on the sense number being higher = higher battery usage is way false. Sense 4 & sense 4.1 were actually designed to decrease battery usage and lag so I would stick with one of those. Also, try underclocking your cpu and changing governors.

People need to stop judging battery life based on screen-on time and hours of use. It varies per person depending on how many accs/apps are syncing. I am tired of all this "better battery" and comparing usage time. If you want more battery, stop syncing on all apps/account. I wish people would stop posting screenshots of their usage. It just means they don't use their phone as much in terms of accs and apps running. Stock rom/kernel best for stability.

It might vary somewhat, but screen-on time and total time are still good yardstick level indicators of battery charge longevity. It's not like when you sync your google account your battery only lasts 1/3 as long - it's maybe a 10% difference, depending on your signal strength, if you're on wifi, etc.

Try reformatting the sd card on your computer via a card reader.
Rage ROM 1.9.1 is a good ROM, nice and smooth. I got about 2 and a half hours of screen on time with that ROM and Snuzzos Funky Kernel. Very nice combination.
If you want to be real fancy you can build a CM10 ROM. There's a guide for it in the Dev section. (Well, the guide is to make CM9, but it's easy to modify the commands to make it build CM10 instead). I get about 3 hours and 15 mins of screen on time on average with the stock battery, no kernel modifications or anything fancy. Brightness is at 25%. I ran it with brightness on 100% for a day and got about 2 hrs and 15 mins of screen on time.

As much as you dislike this method of determining battery life, it is really the only way to gauge battery life on a forum. You are right that it also depends on apps syncing and such but a Rom that can get 12hrs with 3hrs screen time is more battery friendly than a Rom that can do that same12hrs but with 1.5hrs screen on time with the same setup and usage.

How much battery account sync uses is dependent on just how popular you are we have push sync. This isn't Android 1.5 wen're talking about. Push sync uses very little battery.
And sure, I could build a CM10 ROM, but won't it basically be useless cause most things will be broken or barely working?
I've been running it as a daily driver since the 12th. It's surprisingly stable. No random FCs or anything. There are some graphical artifacts while watching streaming video like on YouTube and Project Butter isn't working, but it's still pretty smooth. Bluetooth calling isn't working either, but nor is it on AOSP ICS either. That's pretty much it for problems.

And just to clarify, I'm not.dissing ROM's or developers, in fact, I'm going to admit, I'm a huge Newtoroot fanboy lol. Maybe its cause I've known of him since the Droid Incredible! But I've been running One XxX Rom for about a day now and battery life is still pretty bad, what are some good Sense kernels for battery life?

Try snuzzo's 1.6rc2 kernel with it . I am on ecliptic Rom, but have run Newts and switched to that kernel on both. It's in his funky kernel thread.

how the heck are you guys getting these ridiculous screen on times with the stock battery?? the best ive ever gotten WITH AND EXTENDED BATTERY is like 3hr screen on time and ~13 hours unplugged with countershrikes AOSP and Funky Kernel
and no where near that with my stock battery

I've been wondering that myself lol. I haven't done anything different; same apps, same sync settings, same display brightness, just the ROM + kernel is different. I'm not even undervolted like I was and I'm doing better than before lol... Must be the ROM/stock CM10 kernel I guess.
