So "Unlock the Bootloader", What next? - Motorola Droid RAZR

Just wondering what if motto unlock the bootloader and what will happen?

Custom kernels, more features, better battery life, AOSP ports.. Kholk & the Eternity Project crew are standing by with kernels already.

Dev work would definitely explode, above all.

Better battery life on my Razr Maxx? That would be insane. lol

As great as I hear it is already, it'd surely be better with an optimised kernel and less Moto bloat.

I have to agree about the optimized kernel, but i have yet to see any of the motorola bloatwares show up in the battery usage.

Check using Better Battery Stats and under the running apps and a few things might show up. Also heartily recommend getting an app like System Tuner or Autostarts and disabling much of the crap that starts on boot.

If moto unlocked the bootloader it'd be like chuck norris dividing by zero...
I have no doubt Gnex development would pale in comparison to the Razr and Razr Maxx.

I would have to agree with this, since the Galaxy Nexus is already almost perfect right out of the box, there's not much for devs to do but add little tweaks and mods.

Except the Maxx is better built, has way better radios, and appears to be more durable
ETA: Motoblur was pretty non existent before the .173 update. And then it's like VZW and Moto jizzed motoblur all over it again.... I'm running Absym1.1 on my non safe side (safestrap) and ICS on my safe side w/ the .173 OTA.

JuiceDefender Ultimate AOSP Helper

Does anybody know if the install goes correctly, sorry if it's already been asked. I just don't want to brick my phone.

I didn't want to bump this thread, but I really want an answer. Sooo, anybody know?
For me on the .173 software it failed but did not brick my phone. But until the bootloader is unlocked/bypassed the razr can not run an aosp rom. + juice defender ultimate ran horribly for me, ive used it on many other phones that it worked wonderful, the razr it did not.

So that means that since my Razr isn't running an AOSP based ROM that it's highly unlikely that even on .181 it will be able to run, unlikely but not impossible?
Never mind, I put on my big boy pants and checked it for myself. It worked fine. And I love the new battery saving features.

A fully aosp rom includes the kernel, and since we cant boot custom kernels no rom for our phone can be built solely from the android open source project. I might have to give jd another try, do you guys still get the lag when it initiates 4g?

But now we can boot custom kernels using kexec, right? Ok, second core doesn't work but a good ICS custom ROM with a good kernel running on single core beats a stock ROM which is running on dual core. So I think it would be nice if a custom kernel could be built.

Kexec is close, I can't use it on my DROID RAZR yet, but very promising. I'd guess most devs will wait for the official update to ics's source drop by moto, giving how hard it is to find/build drivers for the h/w.

Linaro Android Doubles ICS Performance

Just read this:

Greater performance=more usable phone at low frequencies
Low frequencies=better battery
my friend has a Gnex and said he flashed it and it made a huge boost in smoothness. If we found out any way to incorporate it into sense immagine how smooth our phone would be
I dont see how ICS could be any more fluid... ICS with sense fragments still left in it runs perfect even at 800mhz. I don't see how it could be any better!

Faster performance has the potential to increase battery life. If you can get the same task done in half the time, you return to idle faster, and this conserve power.

Gingerbread vs ICS

I'm not sure I'm going to like the ICS update as much as Gingerbread. GB Blur looks and feels amazing not to mention the lockscreen. From the screenshots I'm not sure ICS is going to look better than GB. Your thoughts?

I second everything that's been said! I'm on the .211 leak and it's smoother, faster, benches higher, and is more customizable than Gingerbread. It has a better kernel(better battery life), better radios and a better interface. That all adds up to a massive increase in battery.
I've tried a few custom ROMs built from the gingerbread kernel back when I first got the razr and thought id never like ics, recently I flashed the 79 leak and a cm9 build overtop, it took about a day and I loved it, it is a big leap forward

It's all personal experience. Every phone is built differently. It also depends on which apps you use and your wakelocks. If you don't know what wakelocks are then google them and BetterBatteryStats. It will help you pinpoint the problem
INB4 "Just tell me the best rom or don't post"
INB4 Here is the biggest spoon feed ever (Insert roms plus kernel options)
Betterbatterystats is a foreign language to me.

And also ICS covers a pretty broad spectrum of ROMs here, so you can't say it sucks on battery.

JB sucks so much of battery.
ICS suck a lot of battery.
GB suck reasonably battery.
I am wondering whether or not going back to Froyo or even Eclair.

If it's battery life you want, go with a Gingerbread ROM. That's what I'm on because GB is so snappy and sexy.
Unnamed, ICScrewed, etc.
Battery life will differ from one device to another depending on many things. A search would gave shown you this

ROM Performance!

I've been using both UKB and CODIS ROM and they are all very awesome ROMs. In my experience it appears that CODIS is a little more smoother than UKB when scrolling through the homescreens and apps. CODIS battery life is also very good; I have to say the batter life on this is not that bad.
What has been you all experience in the smoothness and battery on these ROMs?
I tried both myself and I seems to like ukb over codis. Codis Rom is nice and I love that boot ani they made its pretty tight but I like ukb a lil better. I think ukb has more remove options and the battery life is great to me but that's just my opinion

Have you noticed the smoothness or a little lag that I'm talking about? BTW the lag is very minimum between the two but I just see better flow and smoothness in codis. I just want to make sure it's not just me. I will be using both roms regardless. I like the fact that codis allows more option to remove stuff but UKB has done a great job of already thinning it out for us too.
I've used, and like them both. I landed on UKB a couple weeks ago because of one thing. RIT icon theme. As far as thinning them out? I prefer the TiB method of doing it myself. Especially with dsb's kernels able to write to system. The lag, or lack there of, and performance are minimal issues between the 2, and aren't decision makers either way.
Thanks to the devs for giving us the options we currently have.

I doubt it. Those Moto bootloaders are uncrackable, hence safestrap. Plus those Rom slots take up quite a bit of space and we are limited without an external sd card.

Good point!
Both roms are pretty similar since we only have roms that are built from stock Sense. Battery life would depend considerably on how we use our phones more into account, then how Roms would affect our phones.
You should try venom. I've been running that for a couple of days and its great. So many options.
