Ignore jd, he is a sourpuss. Enjoy it is what I recommend. Ensure the screen has no glaring defects, don't worry about small light bleeds on boot screen just ensure you can't see them during use. Mine has a couple small ones in lower left corner but you cannot see them at all during use, only on boot.
Other than that just use all features you will be using normally heavily in real world testing. If you notice an issue with something do some technical testing on said issue and see if there is something wrong. Other than that just enjoy using it, it's a fantastic device IMO despite its niggles. If any of them put you into a position where it is not usable to you return it before your window is up.

You WILL have lightbleed, it comes with this screen technology. There is a point where it is a non-factor though. It's up to you to decide where that point is. I recommend going into a dark room with your Prime off, then turning it on. While the screen is all black around the edges you will see a bit of light leaking around the edges. If more light is leaking through in one section make a mental note of where, maybe take pics.
Then take your tablet and use it. Definitely do all the things you bought it for, and do some things you didn't buy it for. Watch some movies for certain, maybe spend some time on YouTube. Keep half an eye on the area(s) that had questionable lightbleed in your dark room test. Is it noticeable? Is it distracting or detracting from what you're trying to do with the tablet?
If you bought the tablet for its GPS either refuse shipment or plan on spending an extra $100 on a Bluetooth GPS puck.
Install WiFi Analyzer. If you have more than one Android device install it on the other one as well. Compare the results side by side. Run Speed Test on both devices from the same place and as close to the same time as possible (but NOT simultaneously).
Leaving your WiFi on, put on your Bluetooth headset and listen to watch a movie, or play a game. How far out of sync is the sound with the picture? Is this acceptable to you? It seems to be software related, so may be fixed in a patch. May, might, maybe. Maybe not.
Obviously dead/stuck pixels you'll have to see for yourself. There's an app on the market that has fixed, or at least improved, that for some people.
Anything else? Post. Lots of people on here will help you troubleshoot it.
Remember, you have a one year warranty with Asus. Also remember (I'm sorry to have to add) that their RMA service is..... questionable. You can search this forum for horror stories yourself if you're so inclined.

Would you return the TP if you were me?

Oye. First post at XDA. I bought the TP at Canada Computers on December 23rd. They give two weeks for return, so I have until Friday to return or exchange this thing. If you were me, would you return this tablet? Here are my issues:
- gps will briefly lock outdoors, but loses the lock quickly after subtle movements
- hdmi output has issues with my Sony Bravia TV - only plays through left channel (using dice player and games like riptide)
- one white (dead) pixel near bottom right corner
- very slight white bleed on bottom right with black screen
What do you think? Maybe others are grappling with the same question.
Cheers,
lukin

the 1 single dead pixel did it for me

Yes, return it. The GPS issue is here to stay though. (Design flaw)

Pixel did it for me. I am on the fence about the hdmi. I think that will happen with all of them until a fix is issued. But i would return it for the pixel.
If it is white it isn't dead though is it? I think it may be stuck. Have you tried massaging it or tapping it? I know it sounds weird but have you tried? Like with your finger or pencil eraser with a micro fiber cloth or some other material between so as not to scratch the screen. There are a few tricks if you Google it.
yeah I think the HDMI thing will just need firmware updates to fix, so hopefully will get sorted out. the pixel though is over the line, get a replacement.
Just preordered it...Hoping they come in this week. Been kicking the TF101/no TF201 around? and the Iconia A500. My wife pre ordered the prime while i was out so....I'm waiting in cyberline. Can't wait. Any other issues you guys finding?
If anything relate to screen, i would return or exchange right away, hard to ignore if you look at it every day....
Simple answer: Exchange it.
Why? If you're unhappy now, imagine how you'll feel once your small time window closes and you are still unhappy!!
Good god man, do it while y'ee have the chance!!
Yep, I'd return it for the pixel.
Single stuck pixel huh? I have one stuck red and thought that best buy would not take it back. If its a reasonable expectation that no pixels be dead or stuck then perhaps I will exchange it (if best buy lets me).
Thanks for the feedback. I am going try the screen massage, maybe break out the sexy time oils. If no luck, it goes back and I join the replacement line. It is is our first tablet and I wanted to get the best product. The bugs are testing my patience a bit. I bet it come with the territory when buying a brand new product.
Thanks.

So you say BB Woudn't take it back within their 14-days return policy?
I am not sure, I am going to send mine back to Amazon for a refund once more become in stock. Then I will re order it, hopefully with not stuck pixel. I am trying different pixel fixers/unsticking tools from the app market. Hopefully they will do the trick, as there is little wrong with it now. I did the battery drain thing to fix the messed up touch screen (never was bricked, just had poor sensitivity in random spots).

I didnt try because I thought you needed a few dead pixels to warrant return. I dont really know anything about Best Buy, I have never bought from them before.

Same here. I had a monitor I kept with a dead pixel and I regretted not returning it for 3 years. Thing bugged me to death, but at the time I didn't want to go 3 weeks without a monitor to return it. I say at least try to exchange it as you should never have to put up with a dead pixel.
The HDMI and GPS probably will continue. The GPS issue is known and the HDMI is probably a handshaking issue with the DRM. A lot of devices can have these issues whether its your TV's problem or the Prime would not be known. DRM should never be included in cabling which is why I hate HDMI.

I guess I was mostly thinking that getting one stuck pixel is normal and getting no stuck pixels was an unrealistic expectation.
Looks like I was wrong, so I will exchange and hopefully get one without a stuck pixel.

I have 2 stuck pixels that I only see on a black background when looking real hard for it. I have never seen them any other way, so I dont plan on sending it back to newegg. If I had bought it locally and could get another to try before I had to return it, then I might feel different. The fact they are still difficult to get, and how hard it is for me to see it, I will keep it.
Here's an update on my headache about whether or not to return my TP. This will also discuss the GPS issue, so others might be interested.
I spoke to customer service today about the issue discussed above. This is their response to each:
1) GPS. They told me to download the firmware update and that would fix the issue. After updating there had been some improvement, but not enough. Basically the blue arrow in google maps bounced around my current location around 30 meters from where I am. For example, up the street, one street over, down the street, and even 10 kms away on the other end of the city. It never stayed fixed on my actual address.
At that point the supervisor suggested that it be sent to ASUS for repairs. This is where we got into a over the top semantic conversation. First of all, they wouldn't acknowledge that there has been problems with GPS for others or that they had posted any public response to the issues. Weird. They wouldn't acknowledge the aluminum case issue.
I told them I have two days left to return to the store and I want a guarantee that it will come back to me with GPS fixed. They said that any product that goes to the service centre will come back fixed. However, they don't know that the fix will be "up to the customers standard" for GPS. I said, okay, what is a reasonable standard for GPS functionality? That it can lock onto a couple satellites and not bounce around the screen like a pinball. He agreed this would be what he wanted from a GPS, but would not say that for certain this would be the end result of the recalibration. Then he began to talk about "environmental factors" that could impact the signal. I said, we've got blue sky and sun today, will it work on a day like today? He wouldn't guarantee that either.
2) HDMI output issue. He said it would be reported to quality control and that it may be fixed with a future update. No guarantee either.
3) Stuck white pixel. This issue seems to have gone away (awesome), but he said it would be fixed if sent for repairs.
I called Canada Computers to ask for some kind of an extension to their 14 day return policy, to have time to see what the repair does for GPS. They shot that down pretty quick. If I keep it past 14 days, there can be no return. They said I could return it and wait for another one, but there is no current stock or promise of when the next shipment arrives.
Two more questions for the forum to chew on:
1) Has anyone reported a fully functional GPS on this device. That they can drive in their car and the satellite remains locked? I have only seen videos that show it doesn't work - like the bloke who kept on calling it rubbish. If there are working GPS out there, then I'm more likely to roll the dice with the repair.
2) Will the Sony TV issue get fixed? I have read people that say it's a software issue and correctable; whereas others talked about DRM and that a fix isn't possible. I didn't actually understand the DRM piece entirely.
3) What quad core android tablets do we expect over the next couple months that will challenge the TP for top dog status? Maybe I can return and wait.
Thanks for reading.

Has anyone got a defective free Prime yet?

Serious Question, This week I'm getting my 6th and 7th Prime I have went through 5 Primes everyone of them has had issues, other than GPS. I don't really care about GPS, I have a 4.5 inch screen on my phone, and it works fine for GPS. I can deal with a GPS issue. I'm not saying that is the case for everyone especially the early adapters, that bought it for intended use of GPS.
Has the Prime even made it off the shelf without a problem? I have had to return everyone that I have received so far because of really weak WIFI issues or WIFI and Blue-tooth together made my WIFI useless. Luckily I haven't had the rebooting problem yet, I did have to shut it down a couple times because the screen just started going crazy out of nowhere.
These are the Last 2 I will take a chance on, I will wait for the new lenovo or Acer or even the 300 or 700 if these fail its over goodbye Prime have a nice life. Hopefully someday someone will fix you, and turn you into the beast you could be. If someone was really good at modding they could make a lot of money from the community here.
So basically in all seriousness, I wanted to know how many people have actually got a defective free Prime? Be honest!
Well, I only got one Prime, and I returned it becaouse of screen artifacts and a bright pixel. I hope the next will be ok, but since I returned 5 Iconia Tab A501 in the past due to pixel problems... I won't hold my hopes high.

I got two Prime, and 1 Dock.
One prime for me, one for my younger brother.
Both our prime are fine, except for weak GPS, no screen bleed, Good Wifi(As good as my Asus netbook, and my brother's alienware notebook)
We ordered from Bestbuy if that helps.
There is a topic with poll, 400+ people are satasified with their device.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1491431
I've had my Prime since Monday - serial number starts C1. The only problem i've had so far was removing the micro-sd spacer.
(If your micro-sd port is not set square to the primes left hand edge the spacer will rest on the inner edge of the case surrounding the port. Solution - use an electric style screwdriver with a blunt end to press down in one corner and angle out the spacer after activating the spring mechanism.)
Wifi seems better than my HTC Desire, but I haven't checked this with bt.
Nor have I checked the GPS.
No bad pixels.
No light bleed. Though I haven't looked hard!
Browser works fine with good streaming and download speed. (to my untrained eye.)
Charged once for about 5 hours whilst using the Prime attached to the dock, which gave me approx 10 hours of use, including gaming, video, music, browsing and setting up, widgets, apps, preferences, etc before both batteries were fully drained.
Charged it overnight last night and can report 100% charge to both batpacks.
I am finding my feet in ICS as my Desire still runs on v2.2 Their is much more control here, although the layout is familliar it feels like breaking in a new pair of brogues. It will be comfortable eventually! I guess HTC's sensui has a bit to do with the slightly alien feeling I am experiencing on the Prime.
"Touch formica desk" I can declare myself satisfied with an excellent and fully working, problem-free Asus Transformer Prime in glorious Amethyst Grey.
note to self - I must check out the GPS and search for lightbleeds.
Got one prime in January and its been perfect for me ever since. There are some software issues that could be worked out but i'm sure that will come. I dont even have a car so gps? meh.
btw just did my powerpoint presentation yesterday with the prime. It didnt let me down and it went really well. Its just that more subtle if you just have a tablet lying there imho.
Third time luck for me.
The first one had no HDMI output and bad light bleed.
The second had a very yellow screen which eventually stopped working.
I've had the third for a week now and I've had no problems. Everything is perfect.
yup!
I went through 10 Primes total to get a good one. Even so the wifi range is subpar.
At this point I would return the Prime and get a new iPad 3rd gen.

had my first one since 12/22. one of the earliest batches. All it took was the first one for me crazy how some go thru multiple ones.
My Prime was neither defective, nor free.
All seriousness, first Prime, received on 12/21/11, and I've never had any issues.
I'm a serious android freak and have never noticed light bleeds or pixel problems on any of them. Maybe its because I don't look for them idk. If I knew what they looked like I'd probably see one or both on all of my devices (5 tablets and my phone) because I'm mental and have major ocd. So whoever replies to this don't fill me in. Thanks!
Better yet I won't come back.

I have my first prime still. I bought in on Dec 23rd. The last update seems to have fixed my in and out wifi problem. So other than GPS, not working that great, I would have to say its perfect. I do love the Prime.
Defect-free, no problems as of yet. I've had since mid-January.
"Has anyone got a defective free Prime yet?"
I had to pay for mine!
No GPS (which bugs me but isn't really vital) but everything else is perfect and always has been.
No bleed. No dead pixels. OK WiFi. Can stream video & use BT headphones
My only slight issue is the Ally case where the power cord plugs in, has bent very slightly. No idea why or how.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
Mine is perfect pretty much.
sometimes it seems like the wifi is slightly weaker - but I think its a placebo effect because I'm waiting for it to mess up.
Don't really use my gps but the 3 or 4 times ive fired up google maps it was right on the dot.
no light bleeds.
Got mine on December 30th and has been perfect since. The one time o tested GPS I got fixes and everything, have not used it since but as soon as I do need it for something I will definitely report how it goes, though who knows when that will be as in over two months I have yet to actually need it for a single thing. My wifi is just fine and has worked perfectly in a plethora of places. I have yet to have a place where I can connect and not been able to.
I can detail the rest but would rather not. My prime has been perfect for me and defect free. I don't consider the tiny amount of light bleed I have in the bottom left corner a defect. I can only see it during bootup which is only during is updates as otherwise I never restart. It is absolutely 100% invisible during all normal usebi have put it through in time of my ownership.
So yeah, first prime and defect free.
My first prime ordered on December 26th the camera did not work, everything else was great. Second prime no issues whatsoever.
1st Prime here- C1. No issues at all, besides GPS. Solved that with Bluetooth2GPS & my Nexus. Was worth every penny to me so far perfect compliment to my phone

Well, instead of posting a stupid link, I'll just answer your question. Unfortunately they are not. Asus has taken advantage of many in my opinion, because they're unwilling to try to make things right w/ the many dissatisfied consumers who have purchased their defective tablet.
This is the last anything I buy from assus
Sent from my Samsung iDroid
I've had to give in and obtian a refund, tried for too long to use it effectively.
The GPS dongle doesn't even work for me
i purchased 1, used for 2 weeks then now sent for RMA for more than 1 month already, still not in my hand yet.
totally disappointed about asus and this sh.t
i will say bye bye the asus forever
That would be pretty lame if true. I was going to ask for a refund when they started all the talk about a big announcement. While I appreciate the GPS dongle, this really isn't a fix. For me it would need to work with the dock installed because that is how I would tend to use it as the passenger in a vehicle/carpool or whatever. Also the BT/Wifi dropout is kind of a big deal to me. So I guess I should have asked for a refund when I had the chance instead of giving ASUS the opportunity to make it right. I haven't bashed ASUS up to this point, but if this is true this will be the first time. I think they should give everyone who purchased thinking they would have GPS a reasonable opportunity to get a refund.
Touch Wood but
I dont have any of the issues that would make me turn down the TP..
I might (barely noticeable) have some light bleeding on the top left side... maybe 0 GPS signal.. and if you really need a 10.1" cover the whole fu* window of you car GPS, you can get the GPS dongle..
But my Wifi is just as good if not better than my Galaxy S2, it preforms like a beast when I need to open large 100mb+ pdf's, editing that last few values on exel spreads before the reports need to go in, makes the keyboard a life saver..
watching a movie when I dont have much to do, play the odd game to kill some time..
None of these features can be out done by any other tablet..
and dont even come with the new IPAD retina display bla bla BS, cause if I have to wait 30min+ for iTunes to convert a 30min TV series so the stupid thing can play it, I wouldn't have time to use it..

think its worth a return for t700?

If you were still in your window for a full refund from the store would you get the newer model for the screen and hopefully better wifi back panel? My current one has none of the issues my first one had other than weaker wifi. It would take a few days for delivery but the cost is the same. If they dropped the price of the prime I'd return it and buy it again or ask to match it. The t300 didn't feel right in my hands even though it was lower in price. I love the prime but who knows what issues the new model will bring.
There is always a model thats better. My phone, for instance, is the Samsung S2. It does everything i want and im very happy with it. The S3 came out and its nice and shiny and has some improvments but really, do i need it? Im very pleased with what i have.
Now if you are happy with your prime as it is, keep it. Its a good tablet, at least in my eyes, and it works well enough. Sure there are some wifi / gps issues that people have and IO problems, but nobody is to say it will be fixed with the 700. There might be new problems with the 700, who knows.
Do you like the prime as it is?
Do you want to have to wait for the 700 to be released?
how much money are you willing to spend? "decent" tablets are selling for $200-$300. Consider this a "top of the line" tablet, does it fit your budget?
Are you willing to deal with whatever inperfections your prime has or would you wait for somethign that potentially has those problems fixed?
Its your call. I made mine when i bought my tablet. I do not regret my decision. My sister bought a 300, she loves it. Everyones different, only you can decide.
If i was stateside, i'd totally return mine to get a 700. The higher res screen, fixed GPS and Wifi make it way worth it.
I went for it. Returned it last night at Best Buy and ordered it online. Got an email a few hours ago that they unit has already shipped to the store for pick up Tuesday or Wednesday. The sales rep at the store seemed unable to order it for store shipment. Something about being unable to because it wouldn't be coming from one of their distribution centers.
I really do like the prime and this was my second one. I had one from the first batch produced which had bad BT reception and wifi. This second model I got really did have no problem with the BT but the wifi reception was still weak with distance. I will admit it was a rough decision since the unit was functional for my purposes and I had it set up with the apps I like. In the end I'm taking a chance that the plastic strip will allow for better wifi reception.
Price wise it was exactly the same. I had the $499, 32gig model and after tax it was an even trade. If it were to have been more expensive I would have stayed with the prime. But for the equal cost and better wifi (fingers crossed), I am taking the risk on a new product that we have yet to discover any flaws yet.

Just wanted to fill you in on the TF700. I've had it for about 2 days now and love it. Right off the start I could tell there is a huge difference in screen image. It just looks crisp and clean. The wifi is greatly improved and I can stream video while using my blue-tooth headphones. That was my biggest hope in this exchange process.
I haven't had any reboots but have had the anr's in browsing and some minor lock ups that are less than 10 seconds. There is light bleed but I suppose it is manageable. GPS took about 30 seconds and locked on to 9 locations from my first floor patio. The volume and power button are improved with a good "click" when pressed. Great tablet so far. Glad I went with the return of my Prime for the Infinity.
If it's an even trade, then you've got nothing to lose. Doesn't the tf700 retail for the same price as the original prime now? At any rate, I'd only go for it if I didn't have to pay extra. There's hardly a difference between the two tablets (GPS and screen resolution).

[Q] Two with screen bleed; RMA again¿

My first nexus 9 had terrible light bleed in locations where everybody else is having issues: along the top bar, bottom left corner, and some along the left side. It was horrible to the point that I returned it to amazon within two days and got a new one. This new one has light bleed in the same locations but about 40% less. It is still noticeable in a brightly lit room when I am using an app that does not have a black bar at the top (e.g. google play store).
So, should I RMA for a second time? Does their exist any nexus 9's without backlight bleed? I'm not sure if it's worth it to keep playing RMA roulette so I was hoping for some input.
Other options are to look at some of the other tablets, in particular the Nvidia Shield and perhaps the new nokia tablet that was announced. Or maybe even go back to the dark side and get the new iPad air, although I really prefer the front facing speakers on the nexus 9/shield.
I am a medical student so my use is primarily productivity but includes: 1. Studying (highlighting pdfs, etc), 2. Accessing patient data through PowerChart, and 3. Multimedia stuff (twitch streams, youtube, netflix, etc.). It's therefore useful for me to have a somewhat larger screen, but not so large as to not fit in my whitecoat pocket. I'm worried that something like the Shield would be a bit too small for my uses. For reference I can barely squeeze an iPad 3 in my white coat pocket.
Any advice?
This is what I do:
I will keep the tablet, as the bleeding is not terrible, and wait for two months or so (after christmas), until they improve their production quality, then I will RMA it in the hope of getting one nearly perfect tablet.

In my country (Austria) this should work.
My reasons will most likely be the lightbleed, the bad to nearly not working NFC and the bad volume rocker.

I see. Im from Denmark myself and I imagine that the same rules apply here however in my order details it says within 15 days after delivery I can contact them if I have issues (bought it on google play). So this made me assume that they would question why I didnt raise the issue earlier. Maybe not. Hmmm
Is your NFC working fine?
If not, you can argue, that you haven't used NFC until this time.
However, here in Austria, (and probably in the whole EU), there is the "Gewährleistung" in addition to the warranty, which means, the seller has to prove that the issue wasn't there when you got it in the first 6 months after you received it.
But make a call to Google play and tell them your problem and my idea, I think, they might confirm that this is working.
And please tell us!
If I find time to call them, I will try that too.
