TouchWiz 4.0 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Here's a look at what we're probably going to get with 4.0 on the note. What do you guys think? I personally am a little disappointed, it doesn't look nearly as cool as stock. Now I'm convinced I'll probably root and put a custom rom on it.

That's probably far from complete, its still using the gingerbread colors everywhere like for the battery icon.
Samsung developed a lot of custom apps and frameworks for the s-pen, so if you flash something like cyanogenmod you're going to lose all that.

True, but you never know... the developers might find a way to add that in.

I'm not aware of anyone ever being able to incorporate parts of an OEM framework into an aosp rom. Maybe its been done, but I've never seen it with the phones I have or follow.

There is actually a version of tw out there that works kn cm
I forget where I found it but I kmoe it exists. touchwiz 4.5 i believe

So we souldnt use cm9? I really love stock android.... but if i loose the functionality of the s pen, then i might as well get a streak (or that new LG crap)

I think some of the core functionality of the S pen can be used in 3rd party note taking apps. Skitch for example allows you to import photos and draw or take notes on them.

How about TouchWiz 4.0 vs HTC Sense 4.0? I havent seen either yet.

Sense 4.0 is nothing amazing, some photos of the "final" build have leaked.
Mostly the same, some small changes from what I've noticed.

AOSP

Are there no AOSP builds for this tab? Also why is everyone so gay for TW? It is hideous.
Honeycomb source isn't in AOSP, and I doubt there's much development interest in getting an AOSP Gingerbread build up and running for the tablet.
Regards,
Dave
I've read multiple stories saying 3.2 has been pushed to AOSP.
People like Touchwiz because it is a pretty nice step up. And in this case, the improvements are noticeable. As for AOSP Honeycomb? Well, you can always build it yourself if you want it that bad.
tw is nice. fixed all the little nagging problems on my tab
I'd rather return it since Samsung is pulling a Sony by selling you one thing then changing after you buy it. I thought people would have been pissed about this but it seems everyone is fine with Sammy running balls deep in ya.

Note the update which says:
Editor’s Note: the sources that were released are the kernel sources and not the Rom ones. The latter are licensed under Apache, thus follow a different set of regulations. I apologize for the confusion.

There is no AOSP Honeycomb source beyond the GPL'd portions, which essentially means the just kernel, and not Android.

Samsung already made it clear months before the tab was release that they were gonna put touchwiz on it. They never meant to have it as stock honeycomb, they did that at last minute in order to bring honeycomb 3.1 instead of 3.0. Also, no ones forcing you to update.

Please do, there's a shiny new Xoom with your name on it somewhere. Then, instead of Samsung going balls deep in you, the Xoom can go deep in your balls, heavy as it is.
But hey, it's "stock Honeycomb", doesn't matter that stock Honeycomb sucks, 3.01 through 3.2, since you gotta have that neon and black.

Closest thing to MIUI...

I'm looking for a rom that is similar to the Look of MIUI (obviously nothing will be very similar) but maybe something resembles it in some ways. I've recognized that there are 2 tpos of roms, the ones that follow the generic, gingerbread frame, or ICS frame (aokp, unamed, phonebricker, ICSrewed, CM7/9 etc.) and then MIUI, who kinda does their own design. I've been partial to MIUI ever since I laid my hands on it.
Reason why I'm asking for a look-a-like is because I've been running the scottish one for some time (1.11.9) but she's had the no service bug issue for some time now where everytime I attempt to make a call, 80% of the time it'll lose service and it takes like 4 tries or so till my call goes through. Unacceptable. Yet I can't keep myself away from the build. It's just so speedy. Wish I could have a more recent build for my I777 but I can't find one anywhere. I've also tried a million builds for the regular MIUI, 2.2.3 V2 being the most recent one I could find (I believe that's the most recent? I literally searched for hours), but this build also has the same call service drop bug. Can't stand it.
Can anyone help with my situation? Currently running MIUI V4 ICS, and it's sweet and all but it's wrecking my brain with how slow it isss . Anything similar to MIUI or help with a fix or newer version. Mucho appreciated!!!
Btw I'm no noob to flashing, have flashed at least 20 different roms and all, just wondering if there is anything I missed...in terms of what I'm looking for. Cus I hate settling.

Yeah I'm really looking for more than just a launcher though. I'm already aware of the creation of MIUI launcher and that's sweet but it doesn't encompass settings themes and notification draw down etc. I'm not super picky about that but I'd prefer everything to be uniform...so not gonna go with that method.

Hahah idk, I was reading up on all these bugs that I haven't really heard of in the general MIUI builds. I'm using it though and it's snappy pappy. Except going back from a conversation message, to just the conversation list. It reverts quickly, but the text doesn't load as quick as the transition. Annoyanceeeee lol. Idc though...sorta. Is good though. Is real good. Wondering if it's worth bumpin up to ICS V4 cus I didn't realize RIUI and AdyScorp were making roms like this. Trying to decide whether upgrading is worth the stupid notification swipe or not. So annoying.

MIUI sucks because it is so slow and in development. The only thing that is great about it is it's interconnected community and even app. Which is all JUST SHOW if you know how to flash your own ROMs.
If you want speed, battery, and best overall flawlessness I suggest: shostock!

I have nothing against all the Samsung Touchwiz based Roms. I just plain don't like em. I have two things that I need personally, and that is speed, and an appealing look/design. Although CM7/CM9 can have a...functional/sophisticated look to them, they aren't quite as unique and sophisticated as the MIUI themes. Namely, CM is all very square and proper, while MIUI seems to be a little more accommodating if you will. I like to speed through things, and I'm particular about the way I do things. For example: when texting someone I like to send a text, then go back to the conversation list, so that when I get a new text I can see who it was from. I used UnNamed rom for a little bit (a month maybe) - and also tried ShoStock because I'd heard a lot about that too. I flashed it, but it basically seemed to be the same thing. Anyway when using unnamed there was obvious lag interface between the message system when I'd press back twice really quick after sending a text (once to close keyboard, once to close keyboard, another to go back to conversation list). MIUI is more smooth in it's transition and seems to have not necesarilly more poignant scirpting but mayhaps faster. I like MIUI's notification bar and status bar. I like how the notifications have a page and I can click my wifi, data, airplane mode, gps, rotation, and brightness all on the same page, without having to swipe left or right to find more. Mostly I'm a fan of the themes of course, since they simply look awesome. If you care so much move to AOKP, it's better than any Samsung Touchwiz Rom I've ever used, for that type of person. I love AOKP, but I can't seem to stand the crude looking toggles/switches, and the damn launcer (all 3 of them). I find app drawers to be very unnecessary (my own personal opinion - plenty of interpretations there). But I'm willing to further discuss this if you want haha. No mean to be insulting but you basically started the engagement

Excellent I want this on my next rom in the worst way hate when I'm reading and screen turns off.
I've begun the process here with a mod for UCLE2-based rooted i717 roms:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26544421
And I'm definitely looking into some of the more sexy stuff (Smart Stay, etc) for future versions. However, it looks like Smart Stay and the S3's pop-up video players are not separate apk's -- they're built directly into the TouchWiz framework on the S3 -- so porting them over is going to be much more difficult, if not impossible. (Mainly because Samsung doesn't provide the proprietary TouchWiz source).
As for video-in-a-floating-window, I highly recommend the "Overskreen" and "Stick It" apps from MBFG in the meantime...

[Q] My girl off the iPhone... recommendations?

After months of convincing her how much better Android is then the iPhone (and buying her a Nexus 7 tablet - which finally pushed her over the edge) she has picked up a SIII.
Now, my first instinct is to grab the sucker, root it, put CyanogenMOD on it. But, that is the "hacker" in me talking.
I don't want to "ruin" her experience. So, do I leave the phone "as is" with the TouchWiz on it? Do I install a custom ROM?
I know ZERO about the phone as I've only purchased Nexus devices for myself (Yes, I have a N4 - complete with broken glass back already).
So I am turning to you all, that have the phone, to help me help her.
Any tips, recommendations, experiences, hacks, ROMs, Apps, etc..etc.. that you can share would be helpful.
Thanks all!
Same with my other half, I ended up leaving Touchwiz on it as everything else was too difficult for her and I suppose Touchwiz is simple, isn't it?

She knows nothing about that... remember she is coming from an iPhone. So iPhone users aren't really as technical / geeky as us Android users are. :good:
I am going to have to root it though. I just realized that Google Wallet is not allowed to be installed on the device. She REALLY wants that. So a "root" is a definite now at this point.

I'd say go with the Sammy-based ROMs (the ones in the regular development section) so it has all the TW features, but put Domination theme on it to give it an AOSP look, as I hate the TW design. You can try null rom, it has domination included. Also check out JKay framework in original development and see if you want to use that as well, it's included in the null rom too.
dont make her to escape from touchwhiz...its actually a nice launcher for someone who started it....its nice and simple with all the stuff thats needed for a user...
also, check what all apps are synced with network all the time, so that she is not frustrated by the battery usage...sync apps only that are required...by default some of the unwanted apps will be synced...
also, if you are rooting, make take off all the crappy apps...i think that should make it to be a good experience for her n you... have a nice journey with sgs3 and N4..
Yup, since I am rooting it, off comes all the 'bloatware' installed on the phone.
How does that effect OTA from Sammie though? If an update comes out and I have removed the 'bloatware' will the OTA still come through and update without getting the "Red Android Exclamation" mark ?

I have a N7 and love it. For the S3, try the most popular rom with lots of support and gui installer (omega v37) to start with. It has lots of different themes to try from the kitchen as well as mods etc. It's very stable. I use the boeffla kernel, close to stock, fantastic sound enhancements, she'll love it... As you may know, the XDA community is ALWAYS keen to make ANY sacrifice to help another user.
As this time it is my turn, and noone offered this earlier, I think that the easiest for you way would be if you'll send your girl with her phone to me for about two-three weeks.
I can ensure you that it will not ruin her (and I hope mine as well) experiences< and I can assure you- it will be plenty of rooting...
I would suggest keeping it stock so it has all the features but putting nova launcher on to keep it a consistent user experience with her nexus 7.

When he gets it back, though, it'll be obvious it's been modified and the guy won't get any more support. The phone will probably behave differently too.
Cyanogenmod might be a little too intimate for an android virgin, stick to only touchwiz.
And getting the xella kernel is recommended to be on the safe-er side of the sudden death bug (or any other kernel with the bug fix).

Samsung Apps Once on Custom Roms?

Hey guys, usually not many people care about getting any of the stock manufacturer apps back after going to custom rom, but in this case there are some apps and features that I really do not want to lose. Is there any way to get these to run (backing up the apps in Titanium is easy) after going to any of the upcoming stock JB-based roms? Apps that I am referring to in this cases are:
Samsung camera (REALLY don't want to lose this), WatchON (this one either), Samsung calendar widget, S Health, messaging app, the slew of features involving the gestures, finger hovering, eye tracking, voice commands, the high sensitivity setting for screen (for gloves), etc...
Can we get any of these back??
the gestures and air view, consider that a big no...
but the other things are apps and widgets, they might just straight up install and work or might take a little messing with to make them work
I'd love to get my hands on the stock Calendar app to install on my N7.
I really like the way it looks and functions.
What do you think the chances are that it will work?
Can somebody pull the apk out for me?

don't flame me, i haven't owned my first android for a week yet...
so once we root the S4, we lose all of those S4 specific items such as the camera, the Air view, Air gesture, etc???
wouldn't those all be part of the ROM we are using to root? i am only asking because, if these ROMs are device specific, why wouldn't they be included after a root?
ps, if my description and/or terms are way out of whack, i apologize... again, this is my first go around and i have been on this forum for the better part of a week trying to understand EVERYTHING related to the rooting process before actually diving into it...

No, you won't lose them unless you flash a debloated ROM, or an AOSP-style ROM.
No. Not once you root. If you use an AOSP based rom, you will not be able to use apps or widgets that require the TouchWiz framework. If you use a TW based rom, they are still available for use without issue.

Eh no problem, at least you read before asking lol. Rooting won't disable those features, but the concern is that installing roms that aren't touchwiz based ,I.e. based on the stock Rom, will do so. Roms based on android open source (AOSP, cm and many others) will likely not have most of the touchwiz enhancements, but hopefully we can still use watchON because its basically the only feature I use lol.

Thank you sir, now i will search for a TW rom
yup. My question is will there ever be an AOSP ROM that supports all the Samsung features. At least the hover and air view. My friend told me its because the Samsung source code is unavailable but there are people working on getting it to work.

Simple answer is no. Also those things are closed sourced

Why not try a different approach?
Okay, hear me out before you just say 'no' to this.
There is a really popular TouchWiz (Samsung, in essence) ROM right now called HyperDrive. It's currently on release 5.7 and it keeps ALL of your phone's stock functionality, plus it adds even more customization options and tweaks! It runs very smoothly and feels a lot better than stock, lag-wise.
However, consider tacking on third-party launcher. Right now, I'm running HyperDrive 5.7, and I'm running Nova Launcher on top, and I have everything looking like stock JB. However, even with all of the stock JB looks, I've still got all of the samsung apps fully working, since it's still a TW ROM. I've even got the Nexus 4's Software Buttons running, and it looks/feels really cool.
Take it from a fan of both stock JB's look and feel, and TouchWiz's custom capabilities and controls.
