Broken Charger! - HTC Rezound

So I woke up this morning to find that my charger is broken! The part that plugs into the phone is completely bent, and I can't seem to find one anywhere. Does anyone know if the warranty from Verizon or HTC will cover the charger? It's still under the 1 year. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think vzw covers the cables under warranty, but you should at least call.
If they don't help you out, try this:

****EDIT****
In post 10, below, feralicious provides a link to the proper 12-pin USB cable (the Flyer and the Rezound have the same connectors).
It's white but it works.

You can use a standard USB to micro USB cable.

I know any USB cable will work, that's what I'm using for right now, but they don't fit as snug as the cable that actually came with the phone. The normal USB cables feel too loose and wiggle around too much for my liking.

The link is there to order a new one then, I doubt Verizon will replace it for free.

Yeah, that one is just a normal USB one. I contacted htc directly and I think they might replace it. Hopefully anyway..

Odd result: a standard USB to micro USB cable from monoprice doesn't actually charge my phone even though the phone claims to be charging AC, the HTC USB cable does.
Anyone else notice anything like this?

Very odd, I'm using a standard charger to charge my phone for the time being and it charges fine. It just doesn't feel secure enough is all. It is an HTC branded charger though. Don't know if that makes a difference.

This thread is about the OEM charge cables. In case you need to order one. The one linked at the bottom of post #21. The DC T500 is the part number. Most places only have it in white though.

This one fits snug with that snap in you get from the original one. I bought two of them and they work great. I just wish they were black.

Thank you everyone for your help. I called Verizon and they were willing to replace it but they don't even have the ability to order the same cable that came with the phone, they only had standard cables. So I actually ended up calling HTC customer service directly, and they sent a new charger & cable no questions asked! They didn't even require me to send the broken one back to them. Thinking I will be calling them first thing with any problems I have from now on!

OEM USB Cable

The Rezound has a very interesting Micro-USB port that seems to have the outer shape similar to Mini-USB, but with the Micro-USB guts. The cable that comes with the phone has a rectangular plug that seems a bit longer and fits perfectly into the phone's jack. In fact, its amazing... to get the phone connected to it, you have to push the connector in until it 'clicks' into place - very solid.
My wife's DINC suffers from a slutted-out socket that now barely works anymore due to the standard Micro-USB design that seems pretty fragile. Even though a standard Micro-USB fits into the Rezound's unique socket, it doesn't have the solid feel that the OEM version has.
Does anyone know what this newer style connector is called? I would like to find a couple more cables that are longer and feel that by using this type of connector, the Rezound's port should last the life of the phone.
Thanks in advance!!!

It's an MHL plug and there is more info in this thread

Thanks dude...
A normal microUSB cable will still get the job done. It's just put in the reverse as it is on the Incredible. The tabs need to be facing up. I got 3 OEM HTC microUSB cables off ebay for like $7 bucks shipped. And the odd shaped end is probably some proprietary HTC connector, same as they had with the HeroCDMA with the miniUSB.

No, it's a micro-A USB receptacle that supports MHL. There's a difference.
I would rather have the MHL cable... Feels more secure when plugged in..
Has anyone been able to find one on the internet or in store?
Sent from my ADR6425LVW
yeah the security of the MHL cable is worth not using a standard micro USB. for instance when you're using a car charger w/ a standard micro USB, the cable can tug a bit on the connector(depending on length of cable, placement of phone) and cause it to come loose & stop charging... but with the micro A USB(MHL) it's nice & secure and you don't have to worry about that happening.
Anybody have a part number for the OEM cable or best case know where to order it
The really annoying thing about the cable that comes with the phone is that you can't use it with any other micro-A/B USB ports. They seem to have intentionally shipped a cable that you can only use with this device, even though the device itself will take any micro USB plug. Thanks, HTC!

The incredible will charge with the shipped Rezound charger, granted it's got the same port. I've been using my Thunderbolt charger, kindle charger and now BB charger while at work. All get the job done.

I did say that any other micro USB cable would work on the phone. I have a charger from every blackberry I ever owned, the Inc charger, and a couple miscellaneous cables lying around. It's just that the one that comes with the Rezound now has to go in its own special pile of cables (all by itself) because I can't use it with any other devices. Did not try with the old phone, though. Interesting that you say HTC's physical mods to the micro USB port are the same on the Inc and Rezound, yet the Rezound ships with a proprietary cable and my Inc came with a standard micro USB plug. I'll check when I get home.
it does seem at least that yes, any microUSB cable will work with the Rezound for both charging it and connecting it to your PC.
for the most part, you really only need the MHL support if you plan on going through HDMI out, which you'd then need an MHL/HDMI adapter cable anyway.
the only benefit to the cable that comes with the Rezound is the "snug fit" bit. whereas, it'd be nice if they had a car charger with the exact same micro A USB end to it as i find that all standard micro USB car chargers aren't as snug and depending on phone placement/movement, the connection can get a bit 'loose' and sometime stop charging.
i used to use this motorola car charger but because of how the cable pulled, the connection would constantly come loose unless i used tape to hold it in place.
It's not an MHL port. It's HTC's proprietary ExtMicro-USB port first seen with the HTC Flyer. An MHL port is a standard 5pin Micro-USB A/B port that detects when an MHL adapter is used, and uses those same 5 pins to support HDMI output. If you look at MHL ports on phones like the Evo 4G and Galaxy S II, they are indistinguishable physically from standard Micro-USB B ports. HTC's ExtMicro-USB is compatible with 5pin Micro-USB cables and 5pin MHL adapters. In fact, if you look at the HTC MHL adapter, it's shaped like a standard Micro-USB plug and only has 5 pins. What's different about ExtMicro-USB is that it has some extra pins compared to standard Micro-USB and MHL. I believe it has 6 extra pins, for a total of 11 pins. Those 6 extra pins are not used for MHL, for the reasons stated above. I'm not certain what those pins are used for, but if it's the same as the older ExtUSB (which is compatible with Mini-USB), then those extra pins are used for analog audio output, for use with stereo headsets, etc.
Why would they send you a cable for anything other then the phone #dumb.

The cable IS for the phone. You can use it to charge and sync. But the PORT can also be used to hookup an MHL adapter for HDMI output. That is IN ADDITION to charging or syncing via USB. The cable that comes with the phone just has a different connector yet is backwards compatable with any regular micro-USB cable.
I'm not sure why this is so confusing to people.
That being said...
Has anyone found a part number or where to buy cables with the non-standard connector?
I have plenty of micro-usb cables, and yes, they do work fine, but I am not confortable with how loose they are. WAY too much play. This especially worries me in the car.

Yea I have been trying to find this too. I was sent the Rezound as a CLNR for my Charge so I didn't even get the original USB cable that comes with the phone when you buy it. Sure the micro-usb cables work, but they feel pretty loose compared to other phones that are designed for micro-usb specifically.
ok guys this is NOT an MHL cable. as said before there is nothing special at all about it besides that it is a snugger fit. any micro usb will work with MHL and you still need the converter.

thanks. I will have to check this one it out but HTC is kind of jerking our chain with the part number. Turns out they used to same part number on all their later model cables. I ordered 3 different HTC OEM cables and they do work for charging and data but none of them had the snug snap-in feel as the one that came with the phone.

[Q] Official OEM HTC Charging Cable

I've noticed while spec'd as MicroUSB, the OEM cable for the Amaze has a different design for the end that interfaces with the phone. It's very solid and snaps into the receiving port. All other "standard" designs fit loosely in the port and I feel it will wear it out over time. Is there any place to buy the OFFICIAL cable without having to go for the wall plug as well? Being that the other end is standard USB, I could plug it in to the car charger with a female USB out. My current charger is a job I bought from a T-Mobile retail store that fits way too loosely since it's the typical MicroUSB form factor.
I believe you can call Htc and order one. I remember someone saying they even got theirs for free. Check the htc websitefor info

According to HTC's limited manufacturer's warranty they will replace every accessory that came with your phone once.
Give them a call.
Will give a try guys, thanks
UPDATE: It worked! They're sending another cable
Just curious, is the OEM charging cable an accessory? (Rhetorical)
If so, I'm moving this to the Accessories thread.
i was wondering the same
i want the same cable as oem just longer.
does anyone know where to find one?

OEM cable?

Does anyone know where I can buy an OEM cable for the amaze? I find that normal micro usb cables fit pretty loose. But no one seems to stock the oem ones.
http://www.expansys-usa.com/htc-flyer-data-cable-dc-t500-extmicro-usb-12pin-white-209995/
They are the only ones selling it in the US and they don't sell it in black. I called HTC first and after being forwarded to the parts and repair department, they refused to send me one nor did they offer to sell me one direct. The person who I dealt with suggested Amazon.com but directed me to the wrong cable because he didn't know the difference between MicroUSB and ExtMicroUSB.
i got mine off ebay. i prefer these cables because they seem to charge the phone a lot quicker than the standard micro usb
Thanks for the link!
As for ebay, what did you search for? All I get is junk. Must not be searching for the right term.
I don't know about probablecauz69, but before buying the cable from Expansys, I looked on eBay and found the same DC T500 cable selling for $14.99, so it wasn't any cheaper.
To provide a follow up to questions about the charging speed, the ExtMicro USB cable does indeed charge significantly faster than a standard Micro-USB cable. It's not even close. I charged my battery from about 50% to full on a PC USB port in just under three hours with the ExtMicro USB cable, while it would slowly lose charge while connected to a USB port with a Micro-USB cable.
Using the wall charger, it's commonly said that it takes three hours to charge an Amaze's battery from empty to full with the stock ExtMicro USB cable. I can attest that while using the Micro-USB cable, it charged about 8-10% per hour with the phone in airplane mode, which meant that it took about 10-12 hours to go from empty to full.
While it's possible that the Micro-USB cable I was using was defective and I should have tested one of the other Micro-USB cables I had, my Motorola Micro-USB car charger didn't seem to do much better and its rated output is 950mA. I do feel better about using an OEM cable that fits and charges as expected now.
If you happen to get an Amaze second-hand, you have to make sure to get the ExtMicro USB cable if you want the phone to charge as quickly as it should.

I was looking for the OEM replacement cables too, which are surprisingly hard to find.
I found this seller on ebay selling the white EXTMICRO usb cables, $20 for TWO usb cables.
HTC OEM CABLES
They are marked as the HTC Flyer cable, but are identical to the cable I got with my Amaze. I was able to make a offer which he accepted for $12 + free shipping for the two cables, meaning each cable was only 6 bucks.
Cool thank you!!!

What he said.
I called HTC to get a replacement battery a few weeks ago and asked them about the cable while I was at it. The first guy I talked to directed me to their HTC Accessories website, but the cable on sale was a regular MicroUSB, not the Ext-MicroUSB. He then transferred me to a girl to take care of my replacement order. While I was talking to her, I asked about the USB cable again, and she just threw it into my order for free, no questions asked.
Moral of the story: Don't waste $20. Give HTC a call and get it for free
I tried that at first and they said to contact mobilicity. Maybe I needed to ask a bit harder.
I called up today, didn't have the greatest luck. The chick didn't seem to know very much and said she had never heard about the free accessories under warranty.
Specifically, I wanted a new back case to see if it helps with poor reception when I am holding the phone.
She told me she would send me an email with details, but I never got a thing. Going to try again later.
I just got off of the phone with HTC Support and they are sending me another cable. I just asked them about getting a replacement cable and that mine was damaged, and the rep setup a ticket to ship one out for me free of charge.
This seller sells the EXTMicro USB cables for $ 9.65 a piece with free shipping, http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-OEM-HTC...Accessories&hash=item41651f69f2#ht_1608wt_905
I have an Amaze 4G now too and I'm going to order two extra cables, one for the car and an extra one just in case

[Q] Rezound Cable

Hi All,
I ended up purchasing the Rezond based on the previous feedback, but I'm still in the test-drive phase. I'm really enjoying the phone so far and so far I'm thinking "keep". The included headphones are really great also compared to my previous headphones! I'll be waiting at least another week before I decide to keep the phone and decide to put a better ROM on the phone.
Anyway, what's the deal with the charge cable? Standard Micro-USB fits fine, but what's up with the funky cable that came with the device? Will this cause any problems using a longer standard cable or will it cause the phone to charge slower? Does this cable need to be used for proper connection to a PC?
Custom cables always make me leery.
Sorry if this has been asked, searching for custom usb, charge cable, custom cable did not return an results.
Its actually not a custom cable. It is a MHL adapter. Lots of talk about it in the Accessories forum.
Basically one port for charging and HDMI out instead of two separate ports.
You can charge fine with a regular micro usb cable, I don't think it's slower but I've never timed it.
If you want to get more like the ones that came with the phone you can get the HTC Flyer cables in white here:
http://www.expansys-usa.com/htc-flyer-data-cable-dc-t500-extmicro-usb-12pin-white-209995/
I bought two of them since I like the secure feeling of the snap in.
I've never tried using a regular micro usb for data and don't have one within arm's reach and I'm really super comfy right now so I'm not going to get up but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
In the accessories forum try searching "mhl cable" and I think you'll come up with two threads about it if you want further info.
I am using a blackberry (micro USB) cable at work, and the OEM cable at home, I see no different in charge time or PC connectivity between the 2 cable.
I also use a blackberry AC adapter to charge the rezound when I am in a pinch.
HTH.
Thanks.
I figured any standard micro-usb cable will work. A MHL cable makes sense though, I've just never actually seen one and I'm not familiar with the form factor.
I'll be looking into this, thank you again.
"MHL" A Lot More Solid
The MHL cable feels a lot more solid than a micro USB. I have a couple micro usb that have gotten loose, and now just fall out of the phone if turned over, or if I hit a bump in the car. Thanks for finding a source to buy more of the MHL cables.
Also here slightly less expensive.

How long are those cables? Doesn't say on the page; unless I'm blind.
There is no such thing as an "MHL cable".
The format of the port and cable that come with the Rezound is called "EXTMicro USB".
"MHL" refers to a standard for connecting small electronics to HDTVs. It works with a regular Micro USB cable. Last time I checked (a couple of weeks ago) there are no MHL adapters that utilize EXTMicro USB connectors. Most of the ones that I've found use a regular Micro USB connector.
At this time, it's unclear exactly what the extra 7 pins in the connector in this phone are for. Other HTC phones have used them for analog audio and video output, but this doesn't appear to be supported by the rezound.
If you look at your rezound, you will see it only has the 5 pins. It does utilize the ExtMicro USB plug end/shape. If it truly had the ExtMico USB then while using the mhl adapter it could charge your phone via A/C while streaming. But it can't because the data pins are being used/ there are only 5 pins.

That's an excellent point about charging while using an MHL adapter. One could still force fast charging through software, such as what's available in Incredikernel/control, though.
On my rezound, I most definitely have contacts in the extra spots. The cable my phone came with, however, doesn't have any pins for them to contact.

Absolutely no connection between my phone and any computer

So after breaking my original cable, I had it replaced by a regular universal cable that every other phone uses (the mini-usb or whatever) and, I can not get it to connect the two no matter what I do or what computer I use. I'm out of ideas and I don't know where I can get another stock cable. Any help?
It sounds like you just got a charging cable and not a data cable. You can't tell by looking but there is a difference. Plug in the cable and check the battery info. a data cable will show USB charging. You don't need an original cable, just make sure it is the data type.

As b5fan stated, the problem is the cable. Your new micro USB cable is a charging cable only. If you buy a data USB cable it will work. Doesn't have to be original.
Best Buy or Verizon are your best options.

If that doesn't work and your phone & computer are on the same wireless network search for software data cable in the play store. Download filezilla onto your computer and follow the directions in software data cable
Might be far fetched and blatently obvious, but had this happen to me...have you tried shutting down the computer, pull the power cable, press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds to clear any juice in the power supply, plug power cable back in and start it back up.
Don't ask me how that works, or how I came across those steps, but worked for me so far everytime.

That's the problem right there. As two previous posters have stated, you cannot data connect between a computer and your Rezound with a generic Micro USB cable that other devices use. The Rezound (as well as other HTC phones, I think) has a proprietary data/charge cord. Did you notice the shape of the connecting hole on the left side of your phone? It's not a true Micro USB hole, is it? It's a special HTC hole. Granted, you can plug a generic micro USB cord in (in the upside down position) to charge your phone... I do this every morning. However, you need the special HTC cord to get it to connect data to your computer.
My beef is this: why did a Verizon Wireless employee sell you the wrong cord? Take it back and demand an exchange for a proper HTC cord. Have them look at the phone's manual if they need proof. And if the employee gives you any lip about "well, we don't carry that cord in store", then smack him (don't do it if it's a girl) and remind him of the wonders of US postal services and that he can order the dang part from the Verizon website and have it shipped.

This is incorrect. The port is shaped differently for the MHL adapter. Any MicroUSB cable should carry charge/data unless it specifically says charge only.
I've been using this cable for both charge/data since my Droid 2 since I like to have a really long cable.

And this is why the port is shaped the way it is.

I stand corrected. Thanks. Didn't realize this.

No problem. Based on the OPs info and saying that he broke the original cable (not sure what/how) and it doesn't work in multiple computers. I would assume the worst and say that he may have broken the port on the phone. I've done this before. Left the phone charging overnight, knocked the phone off the table while I was sleeping, and picked it up in the morning.
The phone still charged (although you had to hold the cable at the right angle), but data was a no go. The OPs hit must've been a serious though because the USB port on the Rezound is pretty stout.

Solid logic, but I actually broke the cable twice. The first time I pulled the metal piece out of the cord (which was just pushed back in, everything worked) but when it actually broke and was non-fixable the cable was simply pulled out of the phone and the cable came in two. Turns out a snug fit isn't so great after all. I don't know, mixed thoughts going through my head. And actually, I've been getting the computer hookup notification when I plug it into a socket. (Wallcharger, phone restarts quickly then the notification pops up and doesnt go away until it's unplugged and the notification is clicked on again)

Funny thing is, I did this and they told me they only carried the one I have now. Dissapointed I left thinking "what the hell, how can you only carry this cable when there is a much different one coming with the phone, that you, Verizon, sold me?" but of course, I avoided an epidemic and am doing everything I can and using alternate methods for file transfer. Only thing is I can't run RUU's because I can't relock my bootloader.
