Trying to figure out what is the best way to setup your network connections on WM6 roms. I'm currently a Tmobile user in USA. The data plan im on, uses a proxy server. So it created an interesting problem if any expert out there can figure this out. HEre goes:
network wizard creates : Tmobile Data, Tmobile mms, on top of the My work network (empty setting), My ISP. None of them uses proxy.
Ok then I went ahead added the proxy into Tmobile Data config then IE works, push mail works from mail2web. AOl emails,YAHOO emails, weather ...etc stops working cuz the proxy.
Ok I decided to play with network management settings like a lot people suggested: I picked My work network (empty setting) as internet, Tmobile Data as private network connect. Now AOL,YAHOO ...etc anything cant use proxy server works, but my IE and PUSH mail fails.
My question is are there ways to tie connection to each application? actually tie into each mail account.
I remember there use to be a skipping proxy cab somewhere, I'm willing to try that cab if someone has it. I just need proxy to be transparents to some mail accounts and maybe applications like HTC weather.

Ok i did a partial fix.
Changed all the aol,yahoo, accounts to use work connection.
push mail can only use internet connection which has to have proxy. now that my sync doesnt like it, will fail with unreachable sever during sync because of the proxy. More digging. I know there are more tmobile web users out there. anyone has other suggestions?

1 thing concerns me is the data consumption over 2g networks as its quite expensive here
I need to know if I can stop data transfer without affecting calling ability???
this is crucial in my decision to buy

Settings > Wireless Controls > uncheck "Mobile Network" > Qapl'a!
you can even put a Mobile Network Toggle on the desktop to just switch it on and off.
Whilst off, you can still send and receive SMS and calls, but not MMS.

no you don't need to root the phone
yes, it only shuts off mobile data (including MMS), this is why it's called mobile data, and not airplane mode. Wifi is unaffected.
Data Roaming
Hi everyone,
We've just started using the Hero at work as a business phone, a lot of our employees travel internationally on a regular basis.
Using our old WinMo phones, picking up emails whilst roaming was automatically disabled by default but could be manually sync'd with our exchange server if required.
On the Hero, there doesn't seem to be a similar function. You have to go in to the Mobile Network settings and disable 'Data Roaming'.
My question is, if I disable 'Data Roaming' but still have 'Enable Always-on Mobile Data' active, will any downloaded apps still be able to connect and update i.e Twitter gadget for instance? Or does disabling 'Data Roaming' stop data connections full stop?
The ideal scenario for us would be something that is quick and easy to turn off (or turn on) that would prevent any data connection but will let us open up the Mail app and sync manually with our exchange server if required (like we could with WinMo).
I currently have the Toggle Selector app on my home screen to quickly get to the Mobile Network settings. I'm just not sure what to enable/disable in the settings menu that will let me get mails manually and prevents all other data connections.
Any advice or suggestions would be more than welcome. It's got us scratching our heads a little and is stopping us from upgrading other staff phones as we don't want to end up with a phone we can't use as a business tool internationally as it costs us the earth in data roaming charges.
The easiest way i can think of would be to have the toggle on screen, and when you want to sync, you turn it on, manually refresh the emails and then turn it off again.
if you have data roaming blocked, it will override the 'always on mobile data' setting, so no, when roaming is turned off, nothing will connect when you are abroad.
honestly though, android is not ready for business really, which is why HTC are pitching it at the consumer market mainly.
I am in the same position, just want to be clear, with the "toggle" will it stop all data? (including browser, mms texts, apps updating) i only want these when i have wifi.

to make it absolutely clear:
When at home,. turn mobile data off and NOTHING can access GPRS.
When roaming on another network when abroad, turn data roaming off and GPRS is blocked. To access GPRS, you have to turn data roaming AND mobile data on to access GPRS.
The Data roaming toggle has precedence over the Mobile data toggle.

I have noticed toggling mobile networks occurs twice. What I mean is, after toggling a couple of times, I cannot seem to coonnect to 3g anymore? In that case I always have to restart my phone. Anyone experiencing this issue? It could be a bug. I used To have a blackberry bold and that bug was fixed by an update

My wife doesn't have a data plan for her Mini Pro, so we have the network data turned off.
She uses text/mms a lot and I wanted to see if there is a way to allow her MMS (Handcent) to access the network data to download pictures without allowing any other programs to access the network data.
Currently, when she receives an MMS, I turn on her network data, download the pic and then turn it back off. As you can imagine, it is not a long-term solution.
For all other data, she uses wifi -

Afaik, MMS uses a separate apn from data connections. Meaning you could totally turn off data and she would still be able to use MMS. As to your question, Permissions Denied or LBE Privacy Guard might be what you're looking for.
This may be an issue specific to AT&T in the US, but to receive picture messages on their network, you need to enable the network data.
For text messages, they will come and go even with the data turned off as they are routed seperately.
I'll see if the programs you recommended might be a way for me to restrict all network data access except to mms -
I have the same problem using Telcel in Mexico.
I do the same thing as you do to your wife's phone, sadly I haven't found a workaround. Good thing is we get notified when we receive a MMS so we know when to enable it.
You can add a widget or use the status bar to turn data on/off with a single touch, I think that's the fastest way without leaving it on all the time.
I forgot to mention APNdroid. Just search for it on the market. It disables the network connection by modifying the APN.
I saw this posted elsewhere on XDA and it seemed to work so far (I'll let you know after I receive my bill at the end of the month).

Change that to say just "mms"
If you have two entries one will be for default,supl and will have a on off toggle, the second will be for mms and won't have a toggle. Just toggle off the data one or edit out the default in apn type."
When I launched the web browser it said I was not connected to the internet, but I was still able to send and receive picture messages.

Hi all, i've been having this problem with my Sony Ericson xperia Play.
My bills came in as a hefty $$ bomb. I do not have data plan, so all internet activities are charged at GPRS connection rate. I've had my mobile network switched off, so there's no possibility that applications would still connect to data? Or there is? i only use my phone for smsing and dealing calls.
I called my service provider up, and they told me that my phone's internet activity is active and running. have you guys ever encountered such problem? Could anyone please enlighten me?

Mobile Networks>Data enabled right?
Normally once you get a phone, the data will automatically on. So normally I will boot up without sim at first, then switch off data.
(I've unlimited plan btw)

Hmm normally on as in, everytime you switched it on. The data runs automatically even when i unticked Data Enabled??

You could always use an app that will not allow any apps to access the network. ie a firewall like (droid wall for rooted users). That would eliminate your problem. There are many apps out there which need permission to access the network, including the stock email, google maps, the market, and etc.
I'm of the same mind as the previous posters. But if you see data being used ie. the 3G symbol or whatever your data symbol is and it lights up or is present when the check mark on mobile data is off then it's not actually off. In other words if you don't see only the cell singal bars you could be using data. Hope that helps.
Edit: Also you said "SMSing" would that also include pictures or video in your defn of that? If so those are data. At least in the U.S. they are.
There is a program called APNdraoid or sg like that. this program modifies the apn settings and dont allow your phone to connect to mobile internet. btw you can manually change the apn settings from Settings->Wireless&Networks-> Mobile Networks->Access Point Names. all you have to do is to modify the settings (add some text to the end of the apn row)

To avoid data charges (and seems that you don't have a data plan), I would suggest delete all your APN settings under Access Point Name in Mobile network settings.
If the problem still occurs, you can call your operator to disable internet access from your mobile account.

Thanks for the suggestions ! i'd just go ahead and change the apn ! But i still can't find the root to the problem. It's like paying for something i had never used at all ..
Btw, I am curious that if you tried to load a webpage in your browser when mobile network is unticked? If you did, does it load?
Hi so I recently activated the unlimited free text and calling from textnow on my samsung galaxy s8+ unlocked sm-g955u on their sprint network. When I had first done it I realized I was able to use free high speed data throughout much of my device with the exception of some games and apps it wouldnt work on.
So I set out trying to find away to bypass restrictions and limitations of the free data I had. I couldnt figure it out in the least, I tried everything I knew to hide usage. And in the process something horrible happened, I lost all that free data on everything except for the google search bar app. In which the google search bar you can search anything you want and all the results come up super fast. The catch is, I can no longer click any links and load pages beyond it. It just sits on a white blank page after clicking a link.
I tried to figure out what I did to change it or put their (I'm assuming) normal restrictions of data usage back in place where it was meant to be from the beginning. I havent been able to unlock the data since.. I e tried vpn like psiphon pro that I could use to get free high speed unlimited data from any captive portal login. But it doesnt work, rather textnow refuses to connect. Any sort of vpn textnow seemingly rejects the connection and I cant even place texts or calls.
I know textnow uses the sprint lte data service for its software. I know there is what I would call high speed lte data associated with my activated sim for text now. I can tell just simply by the load speeds of the google search bar reguardless of what you search for. That and what I had experienced when I first activated my sim and device.
So I'm coming here for a little help in brainstorming how myself and many other people who activated their own unlocked device in the talk and text plan, can bypass the restrictions textnow places on where the data can be used at. The data now is restricted to just textnow and google search (also nessecary functional apps) I know there is a way to hide this use of data, I tried the captive portal login which is speedy, but on pie i cant open the login into a browser to spread the service and i cant find a way to use the portal login to search anywhere else but textnow webpage.
Any ideas people? I'm sure many many people would benefit greatly to a loophole if any were found, and there is a loophole because my device was at first capable of near unrestricted data access before i tried to fully unlock it. If you know someone that might have some valuable input please tell them about this discussion and bring them here.

I realize this post is from last year, but I just ran across it and wanted to give my input in the event it may help somebody. As most TextNow subscribers are aware, T-Mobile's prior acquisition of the Sprint network is now geared towards shutting down the Sprint 3G & 4G networks nationwide. In fact, the lights have already went out on the former, while the 4G side is slated for complete shutdown by mid-2022. Accordingly, TextNow is presently migrating all subscribers over to T-Mobile's GSM 4G-LTE/5G nationwide network. Subscribers who were already using Sprint compatible devices are receiving free upgraded GSM SIM cards from TextNow to make the transition seamless. Unfortunately, this will likely be the end of all the free high speed 4G-LTE data subscribers enjoyed while connected to Sprint's network. This free data exploit was due to a proxy anomaly caused by the default reverse tunneling settings of certain brands and models of smartphones. While the knowledge will do little good now, the "restrictions" of using the data device-wide, across all apps and services, could be bypassed by setting up pdaNET+ on the TextNow device as host access point. Then, by enabling a WiFi direct hotspot via local proxy, the connection could be shared by a Windows 10/11 PC or laptop, by way of the pdaNET+ client-side setup. Then, by using the native Windows 10/11 hotspot feature, the data connection could be resolved and shared by other mobile devices in a normal device-wide manner. So while the TextNow host device would be unable to use the data across all apps and services, any devices connected to the Windows hotspot would have unfettered and unrestricted use of the data. Depending on how tech-savvy you wanted to be, the Windows PC Ethernet port could be used to traffic the data into a home router or extender for expanded sharing. Great while it lasted. I just recently received my TextNow GSM SIM in the mail, and haven't yet had time to experiment with data connectivity or exploits thereof. I will keep my findings posted here as I probe the uncharted waters .
So as you might or might not know, there already is a pseudo free data that is running on the google servers. Example: open a browser and search through google and you will get the results, its slow so I'm assuming its 3g. but they have a firewall that is blocking every other site unless its running via google servers.
You could theoretically setup a google hosted server yourself, maybe rent a cloud server out from google and run programs through there. run a tunnel through that for unlimited data on the phone. Someone just has to figure out how to do that.
For anyone reading this and wondering what we're talking about. Textnow is a free phone app you can use with their SIM/network and never pay a dime for phone service and texting, including media texting. It's totally free.
If this were to be more useful in terms of what sites we could visit, it would be a lot more lucrative.
Another idea I had, if someone has a pentesting rig that can run this network and see which ip addresses are being blocked, we could start building a list of sites that are whitelisted, both IP's and hostname resolved (http/s for example) this would allow us to see where we can start digging to find a place to setup a tunnel here.
I know that google has server hosting via their cloud computing network, you can even host DHCP style servers on it, so you could theoretically use this to tunnel through if the google server IP range is whitelisted. which it might be..
Google has an VPN that's free with Fi, so maybe you can pay for the VPN if you don't use Fi, therefore it's going through Google servers to then the user, so maybe if it costs less than TN's 1GB plan, we could consider it if it works.
