android OS 5.0 jelly bean in april - Motorola Photon 4G

http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20120215PD209.html
rumors that google is speeding up its dev process and is pushing 5.0 around april.

these rumors are all over the net and have been sense the day android 4.0 was released. its rumored that 4.0 was just to integrate honeycomb and gingerbread. wasn't supposed to be as major as everyone sees it. 5.0 has been rumored as strictly tablet and laptop android. they have rumored that 5.0 will take over chrome OS and actually try to get into the desktop competition. also it is rumored that android is trying to work with Microsoft to have android 5.0 and windows 8 dual boot on touch screen laptops and computers right out of the box.

also i cant wait till google makes their own car lineup. a car nearly completely operated my android and to work with your phone. i know apple has an app and is sponsored by some car maker that allows you to start and unlock your car from anywhere in the world. google needs to go a step further. make your cars electronics completely customizable. like changing the theme of your dash board (speed dials, AC, radio, ect.) think about how awesome that would be.

Followed by years of waiting before it's pushed to more than a handful of phones

in that video of the electric cars the dashboard looks a lot like it could be android os. haha.
who knows what will really happen. google bought motorola a while back. I imagine its a matter of time before the next motorola flagship tegra 3 phone comes out. its possible that maybe they would release one with 5.0.

You can forget about this rumor about Android 5.0 coming out in April because it ain't happening.
For one thing the blogs were referencing Google's original Google I/O event dates of April 24-25th which is why the rumors started with an April release. However Google I/O has been rescheduled for June 27-29th. Don't expect Google to release any Android version until it has gone through Google I/O. Honestly with so much fragmentation with ICS, I don't expect Google to release Jelly Bean until the October time frame like last year.

enjoy ICS please !!!

It's definitely not coming out for a while, and although the thought of better, more efficient android updates is exciting, we should all be content with ICS for now, it's almost to the point of being fully worthy of being a daily on the Mopho now.

Isn't this one of those threads that needs to have a "[Rumor]" in the title? I hate looking at a thread thinking, "OH MY GOSH, an official announcement I haven't read yet?" to find out it's rumors...

sorry to get your hopes up. ill put rumor in the topic next time. i think jelly bean is getting pushed more for tablets first, instead of phones anyway.

Do we have a release date for the ICS update?

Has anyone read an actual date yet? I heard in Jan. I saw ICS on the new Nexus and it looks awesome!
Not sure a solid date, but Asus said it would be in January. Of course, Google had a hard time predicting updates to its Nexus devices, and kept missing dates for updating the OS on its older phones. Hell, they originally said the Nexus One would be updated to ICS, but then said it wouldn't.
If Google can't predict it than I would take any announcement as an approximation. However, I think the prime will be updated soon. I bet it already works and is ready they just did not want to risk shipping with the new OS.
ICS is great though. I have it running in a virtual machine and it is very nice.

A lot of UI and feature additions, but performance and battery usage get a good boost. You can really see this in a Virtual Machine. Gingerbread runs horrible and Honeycomb is almost unusable, but ICS is smooth like butter.

It has a whole bunch of new UI tweaks, from the multi-tasking (I guess you can swipe left and it shuts down the program), to the notifications pane, it provides more information in bigger panels, and a settings option in the notification panel as well. I'd imagine more widgets as well. I also read somewhere it runs much smoother and uses less memory than Gingerbread, just to name a couple things off the top of my head.
being that they're running test builds on it internally already, i can see it happening sometime in jan
Is there any want to get a rom lioe it and boot via sd?

what's you virtual machine setup? is it difficult to set it up? I'd like to give it a try too, I've tried the ICS virtualbox thing, it was still laggy everywhere.
Hopefully, when they're talking about updating tablets "in the weeks ahead", they're talking about the TP.

Google just announced ICS version 4.03 to be released. They want that to be base version for tablets n phones.

I use the AVD (android virtual device) that's part of the SDK. Its much easier than setting up a real virtual machine since you would have to compile android from source, and it works well enough to test drive. My main goal was to try and register my avd as a device in the Google Market so I could get some 10 cents apps that were not compatible with my phone but would be with the Prime; however, I ran into snags getting the Android Market working, so I decided it was not worth the time to get a couple of 10 cent apps.
You can get more information here:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
http://www.abctrick.com/2011/10/complete-guide-about-how-to-run-android.html
It can sound complicated, but it not really. Once you have the SDK, you can create a virtual device and you are good to go. It will lack all the Google apps, but there is a way to get them working with some effort. I just did not have the time.
The first tablet to get CM9 will be the G-Tab 10.1 and it's expected fairly soon. Steve Kondik, the founder of CyanogenMod, is now a Samsung employee.

This is little offtopic, But it's shows that ICS will make Prime faster.
HC isn't so good and have its performance problems, but with Tegra3 its seems to perform well regarding the reviews that been made. So I am pretty excited about how good and fast it will be with ICS.
XOOM have got a alpha rom, and the quote is from The Verge
" but the good news is that early indications show that Ice Cream Sandwich is showing much better performance on the Xoom than Honeycomb did"
http://www.theverge.com/2011/12/16/...-android-4-0-3-install-as-google-adds-code-to
Worry about getting the Prime first.
According to Asus Singapore, the device will be released on 2nd week of January for us (yeah, sad us ) but it will come with ICS preinstalled. That might be a gauge as to when ICS might be released as an update.

do you have a link or something to verify this?
if it's accurate, ICS should hit all TF201 devices essentially at the same time, so super early jan/late dec would be pretty sweet, as the less time i have to spend with ****ty ****ty ****ty HC the better.
Here.
Hi all, each individual country will have different shipment date of the products and thus for SG, based on latest schedule, stocks will be available in Jan 2012. In addition, the Eee Pad Transformer Prime for SG will be in Ice Cream sandwich which customers do not need to do FOTA update. Thanks for your kind understanding.

Verizon announces Ice Cream Sandwich update for 14 devices

ORIGINAL SOURCE CAN BE READ HERE : http://www.rethink-wireless.com/2012/03/08/verizon-announces-ice-cream-sandwich-update-12-devices.htm
Any Verizon customers wondering when they can expect to get the update to Android 4.0 on their handset or tablet has a little more to go on as of this week as the carrier has released a list of fourteen devices which will receive Ice Cream Sandwich. While it reveals what will be getting the latest version of Android it doesn't go into the more crucial detail of when.
Handsets set to get the upgrade include; HTC's ThunderBolt, Droid Incredible 2, Rhyme and Rezound, Motorola's Bionic, Razr, Razr Maxx and Droid 4 and LG's Spectrum. Among the tablets getting the upgrade are Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and 10.1 and Motorola's Xoom and Xyboards.
The fact the Droid devices make the list isn't surprising as Motorola had already said so in its own announcement. If it's anything to go by then it means anyone eager to receive the update could face waiting up to Q3 this year to get it on their handset.
In addition to refining the Android UI with common actions made more visible, more intuitive gestures and other features such as Android Beam and Face Unlock the new OS works across both tablets and smartphones. This avoids the divergence of the two branches of the Android that was seen when the tablet-friendly 3.0 was released.
Verizon promises to update the list as more information becomes available "throughout the year". This doesn't exactly suggest that the update is going to be available soon and may encourage Android loving customers to look elsewhere for their Ice Cream Sandwich thrills. If they stick with Verizon this mainly means opting for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus which was released in December and comes with the OS pre-installed.

It seems to be overlooked by EVERYONE, but all of the articles i've read say that the Jellybean 5.0 OS will be tablet based ONLY. Not for phones... much like the Honeycomb OS. Correct me if im wrong
That would be absolutely retarded. They just brought them together under ICS and then break them apart again with JB?
I hope they don't do that...

I dont really understand Sony's policy about software , you're creating a new phone which relaesed in feb 2012 and the most current software is ice cream sandwich and the phone comes with gingerbread , it sounds like you creating a high end notebook and it comes with vista ,
you sucks Sony , believe me I'm telling this just buying Xperia S a few hours ago .

I totally get what you say, but you don't want to wait for ages to put an outdated but optimized OS on your phone? I hope for some BETA tester ROM release from Sony on Xperia S forum as well.
I'm not sure we have to wait all that much longer...
They said it can be end of March/early April, I would assume they would try and release it around then, or at least that beta you speak of. I don't think Sony wants to adopt SE's update reputation, so I would hope they would release it around when they said they will release it.
Jelly Bean is in the works, sure, but it's all down to rumors at the moment to when it will be actually released. If we are one update behind for awhile, I don't really care as long as it's optimized for the phone, and not some half-baked, rushed OS port.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/28/android-5-release-date-jelly-bean_n_1306952.html
I will say that coming from a Nexus S which was running CM9 (ICS), the interface Sony has put on top of Gingerbread does a great job. I thought I'd hate taking the step back but other than a few little bits, it's not that big of a difference. Things like the themed progress bars and buttons really remove some of the ugliness that GB still had.
Don't get me wrong, I am VERY excited about ICS on this device but I don't miss ICS as much as I thought I would. I can certainly hold on for a few weeks.

For the general public, beta roms with problems can cause much more damage reputation-wise (aka "this phone sucks, it crashes all the time lol").
Also, I like how Asus has pushed fast ICS releases for the Transformer, but it does not yet have the stability of the previous HC version. Picking up your tablet/phone for a 3 minutes read and seeing it reboot spontaneously is not that great
So I prefer Sony to be a bit late and get a good ICS release at the first try. And when it comes to the Arc/Arc S, we will know the XPS version will be close

What I would be suggesting is for them to work harder to hit the market at a right time with fully optimized upgrade. If they don't want loss of customer like what they did back in X10 time, they need to still work faster and base on 2011 model upgrade and what we saw, they are on a right track.

How many brands have upgraded their lineup to ICS so far "at a right time and fully optimized"? If Sony delivers an upgrade before end of Q2 they're still in a comparable time with other brands unless all the others suddenly deliver it in the following 1-2 months, because so far only Samsung (that is the biggest Android manufacturer at the moment) is barely pointing to an imminent SGS2 upgrade (based on rumors, not even officially yet).

Here's your choice.
1.Be the first that has ICS.
2.Wait 2 more months and get a fully optimised ICS, totally optimised for your phone. That probably runs better than a HTC or Samsung on ICS with the same specs.
btw ICS isn't a super drastic update or something, you're acting like it's the difference between Window 3.11 and Windows 7.

Htc have already released ics for their sensation phones, also alot of manufacturers would have phones released next month with ics onboard.
I'm not buying the Xperia S until the ics update comes out, it just doesn't feel right to spend $600+ aud on a high end phone that comes with a 1.5 yrs old os that my current phone is running. If ics doesn't come out by april. I'm buying a new phone from the other manufacturers which does have ics.

It is (probably more like xp to windows 7), just hw acceleration and support for the google chrome browser is reason enough for the upgrade.
ICS is the only reason I am upgrading from my n1
Well, thanks for all the comments up there ^^^.
I did the ICS upgrade that ZD did in arc board and have it on my arc and it was based on Vanilla ICS. I got the best battery and performance I have ever got on any android phone (owned 4 so far)
Second, optimization with Sony won't be there ever. While I agree there are lots of work with custom UI and setting and adding extra stuff that Sony does't with their on-top of OS thing, but if you pay attention, the OS on Xperia S 2.3.7 that should be optimized, its not even close to being optimized. Battery is like hell, I got rid of all the junk apps (bascially everything) and have nothing to run live, plus battery of this phone is bigger that arc (yes, screen is larger as well) but still not close even to arc.
I like to be optimist about this situation, but I was more hoping for a Beta version so maybe our beloved developers could make something out of it.
You guys don't worry, I won't be waiting for Sony to release its optimized ICS since I really don't care about the UI.
I hope I didn't go over board since we are all here to have fun.

If your priority is having ICS and Jelly Bean when released ASAP your only real option is a Nexus Galaxy. As of today Android is still a train wreck when it comes to OEM updates...

But not for the UK? Has release as USA :'(
No Australia?
The last time Sony VAIO released an Android update, American got it, then a few months later, so did Europe - that was Release 5 for the Sony Tablet.
However, seeing as though that is just a USA forum, in the past, ALL Xperia Tablet S updates have been released at the same time.
Eagerly awaiting the release notes. Mobile Bravia Engine, please!
I'm pretty sure that it will be a global release, we will have to wait till afternoon tomorrow here in europe!

Always has been with this Tablet.
I expect he's just saying that as he is a rep for the US.
Project Butter at last. The main thing (other than the random shutdowns) that bugs me about ICS is the 30fps animations.
60fps here we come...welcome to 2013!!! Fingers crossed for a European/UK launch!
Even if its not a UK release just yet, I'm interested to see if its different or whether they've included the new Sony Mobile launcher. Given this is 4.1.1 after all....
I was hoping for a new feature from Sony here.

Ooooh, interesting - not tempted by the boost in screen res/features? Or just not that fussed about shelling out £400+ within 7/8 months? Will just need to wait and see. My XTS is destined for the graveyard anyway so this will just make its passage to the next life a little more...buttery.
I do enjoy using this device, nice screen size, good processor, so if the JB release doesn't differ much to the Xperia Tablet Z, then not much point upgrading!
Besides which, the XTZ is still over a month away!
Something tells me though that Jellybean won't arrive here for quite sometime...(UK)

Even tough, the link isn't working and the System update on the tablet isn't allowing to update as it says that the System is updated. It will only be a matter of hours I suppose!
Why 4.1.1 though?
Sony VAIO always seem to be one iteration behind a release. 4.0.3 instead of 4.0.4, I was looking forward to the single gesture notifications.
Not alot of new features really, certainly when you consider it has supposed to have been in development since last September. No Mobile Bravia Engine which is a shame.
DLNA Function? I thought this had DLNA?
I don't know. I stopped trying to understand them since I think they don't really know what they're doing. Nevertheless, the changelog seems a little bit narrow and is only available on GB site (Portuguese and French sites haven't) so I hope the performance enhancements have a little bit more to add to it. Are you able to download it? I'm not.

Nevertheless, the changelog seems a little bit narrow and is only available on GB site (Portuguese and French sites haven't) so I hope the performance enhancements have a little bit more to add to it. Are you able to download it? I'm not.

Can't download as of yet, no.
A few users in Japan on XperiaBlog report having the update. They've commented on the JB XTS thread.
Hope they've done some work on the front end UI.

Android Q

What a deception... I was hoping Samsung to be more faster on update.

Samsung and updates not a good match my friend...if u get a samsung for updates..thats no good.
I got my samsung for the hardware and how beautifull it is. Also with one ui the phone is very snappy as it is. No need for updates as of now
seriously?
I hope no betas are released until Samsung's official one
get a pixel!!
Q is no big deal anyway. There isn't a whole lot going on with it other than Google will be able to release security updates via Play Store with their new Project Mainline. It will also give the Pixel kids something to run around and squeal about because we know how they get all puffed up when they can say they got it first. ?
Atleast it's coming this dec.

Yeah, it's true that Android Q hasn't a lot of new stuff.
No need of it now.
But, there's many manufacturers who participate to the beta. I don't understand why a big player like Samsung isn't on the list.
I wish they will participate soon.

I've been through 2 betas with Samsung and before that I was in 3 or 4 with Motorola. To be honest, Samsung doesn't have a clue on how to run a beta program. When we reported problems in the Samsung Members app, the best we got if anything at all was to submit a report through the app to the developers. As far as I know no one got feedback other than we're looking into it. Everything I reported with the S9 carried over to the Pie final. Motorola had a dedicated forum with moderators that actually passed feedback back and forth. I even spoke with a software engineer two times.
Beta with Samsung is sort of here it is, hope it works.
well,i was hoping samsung can update a new full screen gesture like android Q , MIUI 10 , oneplus 6's or maybe just build-in one hand operation in next firmware. and faster fingerprint scanning,it really sucks when you try so hard and it just not unlock the phone

Not sure I agree here. I'm running it on my Pixel 3 xl and it has many noteworthy features. There is live caption which let's you get real-time transcriptions of what is being said on any video, in any app, across the entire OS. There are systemwide UI changes like dark mode and improved gestural navigation and the back button; over 40 updates to the way security, permissions and privacy agreements are handled. Also, there are improvements to Android's security which will make them come faster thought the Playstore (Project Mainline), better parental controls, new Notification Assistant that will help you reply to incoming chats and other minor stuff. In my opinion, it is by no means a small upgrade, specially when you consider it is still in Beta 3 and will probably add even more features. So far, it runs smooth as butter for me and had great battery life.

If it follows historically anything like previous generations of Samsung phones it should arrive to the S10 family sometime next year in February or March... Just in time for Google's Android R first preview release.

Why? Samsung have no commitment to release a beta firmware to users. People today are too impatient, you need to learn to wait for these things.

? I'm buying a new high branded product to have one of the best smartphone. I'm here because I want to share my experience and to find informations from others.
What I see is that almost others brands are offering beta firmware to users and faster updates than Samsung. Why do we have to accept this?
I owned some Samsung devices in the past. Finally change my P20 Pro to try S10. But Samsung was not faster than before on updates, maybe slower.
My girlfriend know nothing about cellphone and don't care about updates. But, if you're here man and you don't care about new characteristics, what are you doing here?

You accept it because that's pretty much the way Samsung has always been and not anyone here is going to change that. When someone buys a Samsung phone, they need to accept that as a condition. I would bet money that the majority of users worldwide care less about updates as long as their phone works reliably.

Other brands may very well offer beta firmware and if what you want is for firmware to come out quickly then I suggest next time you get one of those devices but what I said was be patient, it will eventually come out. You shouldn't be here just to whine about updates not coming out, I've been on XDA for nearly ten years now and it annoys me when people complain about the speed of updates. You should want a complete update without bugs and that takes time, making a post about it won't speed up the release and just clutters up the feed.
Samsung if you see has alot of devices to take care of. They release security patches on monthly bases to phone ranging from 100-max$ they have. Also the one ui which is very heavy skin needs to be fully usable and bug less in new android q. I myself have tried betas and didn't find anything usefull expect bragging in front my friends. Apps run same or maybe 1-2% faster in Q.
With Android betas you can download a new CPU & more RAM to your device so this is why it's so important to get it quickly from the manufacturer.

Ahh the age old xda mass-debate about beta firmware.
Get yer popcorn sweet-cheekses, its gonna be a great
All this mass-debating
In all seriousness tho Samsung won't be physically be able to release firmware as quick as Google due to the extra software overlay. Its that simple lol
Samsung has NEVER been known for releasing software early so I'm not sure why anyone would whine about slow updates.
Is look Android 10 UI 2.0 beta is coming soon ?
