Hi, I'm really new at this where it comes to my Prime.
It's just I'm wondering what's the main Reason to root My Prime, and what benefits would I get when My Prime is Rooted ?
Many Thanks in advance for you Advice
-backup all your apps +user data
-block all ads
-being able to edit all files in /system which is needed for mods.
And many more things, there was a thread around like that last week i think you could look for that
Up to now - since we can't have custom roms - my reason is simply to be able to use switchme.
This makes the prime a multi user device.
And since the busybox installed along su seems to break the Asus backup tool I am happy to have titanium backup.
Those are my major reason to Root.
Other than that : its my toy and i wanna have full access regardless if needed or not. :-D

Rom toolbox and a few other root apps allow more customization.

my main goal behind rooting my phone was overclock and mods.
it seems almost entirely unnecessary for my Prime so i intend not to.

But why not? There is no harm in rooting the device, you get nothing but positive if you do it, plus it's not a difficult task. I just don't see why you wouldn't do it. There are a number of apps that require root access, and without it, you're out of luck.
Cheers Guys for your help :-D
One word: Ubuntu!

I haven't come across anything I need root for on my prime so far. My Galaxy S I9000M is rooted and running Cyanogenmod9 so I'm no stranger, just have yet to find a real need for it on the prime.

It's an easy task, but I haven't really wanted an app/feature bad enough on the Prime to want to root. And quite honestly, I don't have a permanent attachment to the Prime to want to get the *most* out of it. With a locked bootloader, constant updates from ASUS, multiple hardware issues that may be addressed and limited developer support for ICS in general, I don't quite have that 'going concern' nor do I get a feeling of accomplishment in rooting it.
-block ads, dramatically increases browser speeds
-Overclocking, dramatically increases overall power of prime
-backup
-custom roms
-ATP tweaks to add new modules/drivers that doesn't come with prime stock
And lots more

What app do you use?
Touchscreen tune. I can now take notes with a stylus in my classes. I could before using this app but its a night and day difference

More customization and safety/security options.
Titanium Backup and Adfree were the first to get installed.
Root Browser/ES File Explorer are levels above the Asus File Manager
File sharing over WiFi via a number of root-only apps as well
Ad blocking would be my main reason. That and being able to shell into the device to mess around.

Great app... thank you for mentioned it.
The Law of the Crafty (It is my ™)
I mostly rooted to allow me to backup apps etc. properly and restore apps with data from another device using Titanium. When there are stable ROMS available that add value I may well be tempted to play.
CIFS support: Ability to mount a shared directory from a Windows, Linux, or Mac network on the Prime as if it were located on the prime itself...I can open 10 terrabytes worth of movies, tv shows, comics and music from my home server, directly from their respective apps, on the prime without touching ES or any other file explorer type app. Heck, my installs of BS Player and PerfectViewer all default to a directory that isn't even on the Prime!
App backup, better user data backup, and perhaps overclocking all seem like good reasons to me as well.
And let's not confuse root with the ability to load a custom ROM...you can do all the above on an Asus ROM using a reversible root process...while root is also a necessity for loading a custom ROM, it does not by itself enable that capability...the boot loader unlock tool that is also necessary to allow custom ROMs to be loaded on the Prime breaks warranty and there's no work-around I know of. Root != custom rom.

This right here would be my main reason for root, if I root. So far, I haven't come across anything I couldn't do with the Prime in a stock state. ES File Explorer lets me get at my windows shares, and I haven't really needed direct access like CIFS would provide.
Then again, I generally don't watch movies/tv or listen to music on my Prime.

You can acomplished the above using ES File Explorer or BS Player no Root required. I know it works because I did it before I rooted mine.

Hi
Just wanted to know why would SGS2 Users want to root their phones ?
Cause
1. Its one of the fastest devices out there
2. Its on latest Gingerbread ( honeycomb yes but not big deal yet and Icecream Roms not out yet)
3. If you don't like touchwiz you can go for launcherpro or ADW launcher or any of those.
People nomally would root if their devices haven't got the official latest software updates or to squeeze a bit more juice out of their ageing devices like my Hero which has been rooted and booted a hundred times.
The reason for my asking is I am considering buying this or the HTC sensation (locked bootloader I know) and would know what benefit it would be for rooting the SGS2 NOW.....
I understand when Icecream Sandwich is out and about it would make sense but is it really worth rootind your brand new Device ?
Or have we become Flash-o-holics addcited to XDA's and Cyanogens ROMs that we HAVE to ROOT and FLASH and have those sleepless nights to test out the new roms
The reason I've rooted mine is to use apps that require root (cachmate, root explorer, titanium backup etc) and also to freeze via Titanium Backup the apps and services I don't use, which should lead to better battery life if they aren't running in the background
That's pretty much it ^
Not rooted yet but 100% sure im going to (unless i get a brick)
Reasons :
-Full read/write access to the system folder.
-Recoveries : Nandroid backup, flashable zips, wipe battery stats all that good stuff that comes with a recovery (this is what im waiting for then ill root)
-The apps as mentioned earlyer (titanium, addfree, root explorer and many more)
hmm thats all i can think of at the mo.
I rooted it, as I needed adb push to /system for quick adding of new files to my ROM
No real reason to root it when you use it as a normal user.
Hackers root for fun

RW access to /system for me.
I *HATE* android at 240 lcd density, looks like a childs phone. First thing I do is change to somewhere between 167 and 192.
I rooted to use Titanium Backup and Adfree, that's pretty much it actually.

Rooting is nothing to do with firmware or launchers its gaining a higher degree of ROOT access on the phones operating system .
To let certain apps operate at a deeper level than is allowed as posted root explorer titanium etc ..
Rooting will invalidate your warranty .

Same as anyone else, I guess: removing bloat (hubs, ...), changing config files (gps.conf, ...), running apps that need root to work (AdFree, ClockSync, Tit Backup, ...), ...

Err, no. For deploying custom firmware you need an unlocked bootloader, not root. Two quite different things, really.

Locked bootloader and /system write-protected below the OS level. If you care about modding and tinkering at all stay away from newer HTC phones. And since you needed to ask I'm guessing you do.
Yes, I know they'll probably/maybe be hacked some time - but why bother when other manufacturers are much more dev friendly? Heck, even S-E seem to be getting it ...
Rooting will really bring more advanced feature. By rooting you can access to the root system of the phone, thus you can fully control your phone. You can control the permission when you install the apps. You can install apps that need root access.
To deal with apps that request permissions that they normally shouldn't request.
I rooted my device to show off to friends who havent rooted it
Why? To be able to use Privacy Guard and stop intrusion from Google and half of all app devs. For me this is more than enough to root your device. Also, to get rid of all the Samsung bloatware such as social hub and other junks.

From some locations, you don't have access to paid Market apps unless you root and run Market Enabler.
I did it mainly to be able to play Tegra games.

LBE Security Guard will do that for free. Lookout does it at an annual cost. I'm sure there's others out there too, but I really rate LBE.

Thanks. Can I do it in Titanium Backup? That seems to be a must-have app while I root around for the best custom ROM. If not, I'll try LBE Security Guard as well.
I really want to try rooting my SGS2. But I'm afraid it'll void my warranty. Just got my phone yesterday so I wouldn't want to void my warranty.
ANNOUNCING PERMA-TEMP ROOT + HULU FIX!!!!
I've taken the excellent existing information from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159354 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=688054&page=46
See the first link for instructions, etc. Basically just plug your phone into your PC, make sure USB debugging is on, using your phone as charge only, and that HTC Sync isn't running. Then open up the attached zip and run Run_ME_Fr3vo_ROOT + HULU FIX. OH, and I'm not sure if it matters, but have the latest Adobe Flash player installed on your phone before you start (10.3.185.25)
That's it! Your phone should be rooted AND HULU-ready until you reboot.
WHAT I DID: All I did was add a few commands that will delete your lib file from com.adobe.flashplayer, then install a different .lib file with correct permissions. Now, when you go browse Hulu with your stock browser or Dolphin (making sure your settings are set to disable mobile browsing, or set as DESKTOP VIEW, etc), Hulu won't recognize your phone as non-desktop, and you'll be free to watch Hulu all you want!
[Please note: this is my first time doing anything like this, as in first time ever creating a .bat file or doing anything with adb beyond the very basics; please bear that in mind when ripping me apart for being a noob ]
If this was helpful, please let me know with a thanks!
EDIT: Thanks to abe_ahmed09 for reminding me this works with stock browser too!
Unable to test this right now due to no PC access. But dude, no one should rip you apart, you are trying to help the community and I commend you do doing things that a lot of others do not have the ability to do.

very nice work! thanks for this.
SWEET!
Glad it's working! I'll add emphasis to the fact that you need the latest version of flash for it to work.
Here's a question: are there any other programs out there that have to be tweaked AFTER root in order to work? What I mean is, right now I've got 10 or 20 root apps that work flawlessly after I root. But if there are good apps out there that require additional tweaking after root, perhaps we could incorporate that into the .bat as well

Oh hell no! Just use the free Dolphin Browser from the market, then go to settings and choose "Desktop" so that websites think you're browsing from a PC/Mac. When you get to HULU, depending on your settings, you may need to click the green arrow to watch the video.
Works in Full Screen too!!
...of course, if you're talking about Hulu-plus-only videos---then yes, you'd of course need Plus to view those videos just as you would elsewhere.
EDIT: Reading over your comment again I guess I need to clarify further: nothing here is "ad supported" because there are no apps, etc that I've provided. ALL MY HULU FIX DOES IS SWAP OUT A FILE IN YOUR ADOBE APP FOLDER THAT TRICKS HULU INTO THINKING YOU'RE A COMPUTER. But note that you'll still need a BROWSER that enables you to browse like a computer.
Were these points unclear to anyone else?
Works after updating flash to 10.3.

Root Explorer. (Nuff said)
Wifikill (comes in handy trust me)(search for it on xda, not market)
Sixaxis Controller (I use it on GTA3)
CIFS-Manager to mount a network share as a local folder. With this app, you can play movies / music / anything from a network share without copying it locally.
If you don't need to mess about with root, it might be easier to wait a week or so and see if there is an update to ICS. You might have noticed that lots of people have stability issues, so don't expect too much sympathy if things go wrong.

To say that's its working would be a lie... I can do everything but use the four right buttons and R and L's right now...Not sure what I screwed up but I'll post the profile and tutorial i used so people can download it when/if it works.
-AdAway
-Root Explorer
-A back app like MyBackupPro or TiTBU that can take advantage of root functions in its backup and restore process
-SetCPU (hope to have future use for this bad boy)
-VooDoo OTA to save root and unistall and reinstall root after OTA updates
-a CacheCleaner
-BusyBox
Surprized no one has mentioned
-- Droidmote Server
You can play games and control the device remotely from another android device like smaller easier to hold phone, personally i dont care for tilt games on the tablet cause it seems to over or under tilt for me the way I hold the device. touch controls/ audio / mousepad
IMHO controlling the device remotely is a really cool benfit of root'ing it

Anyone else notice with multiple users, you don't get SUPERSU installed with that second or third user? You can't open it because it says it doesnt support multi user yet or something. What a bummer.
This whole new multiuser thing is so odd to me. I'm setting up my kid an account so he can do his gaming on his side and leave my sh*t alone. I think google really hit the nail on the head with this one. Its brilliant. However, there is a learning curve with the whole seperate user space deal. I also noticed if you mount the N10 (plug in the cable to your computer) in each profile you get different sdcard data. For example, If I copy over some wallpapers to my profile, then log in as my kid and mount the N10, he doesnt have that wallpaper folder...I gotta copy it again.
For example, I normally use titanium and freeze some of the stock bloatware stuff, specially the google magazines and such. Of course in his userspace he still has it! Ahh well.. not sure the point of this thread. Discussion I guess...
If you read the description in the market, Chainfire says he has intentionally disabled it for everyone except main account for now. You should be grateful your kid won't get root. I believe he intends to fix it in the future.

Grateful? Hardly...he's 3.

Superuser I believe is updated to handle multiple accounts, might be worth checking out unless some app(s) you have absolutely have to use SuperSU.
What is the difference between supersu and superuser? In app drawer it shows supersu but if I browse /system/ the file is named superuser.apk
I have some installation package claiming to be superuser 3.3 with multiuser support but I have not tried this yet since I don't know the difference.

Root is root. There's only 1 "kind" of root, though there are several methods of rooting.
It is really easy to root borh Color and Tablet. Once rooted you can add apps to your heart's content!
You donät need to install an alternative operating system (CM7/9/10). It's perfectly all right to stay in the Nook original OS and just add the apps.
I did the 4.7 root to one, so I was just wondering if I really need to go any further. This is my first dealings with apps and I really don't know what I need to do to get apps easily and cheaply. What I think I got is a way to get apps from somewhere other than BN store. If that is all I want do I really need cm's?
No you don't need anything else just to get apps. Side load if you've already got the apk or get them from Google or Amazon or wherever you want.

Thanks! I will keep looking for apps. I did hit a problem when I downloaded and app and it said format unkown. I had unknown sources checked so I am not sure what the problem is. I then went to my root card and it had amazon store app and it said the same thing on that. Kinda wierd.
I got this to work! Downloaded it anew and installed!
