[Q] Choosing network data speed - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there, I was thinking that is there any way I can force my phone to work on specific speed like enabling high speed means you get max out of your network. Say 14.4mbps is what your device has, can I fix it to work at 7.2mbps? I feel doing that so will save your battery. Any idea?

This should be possible somehow , I rember that the playstation portabel had a wifi saving option

Is there any app for that?

& yes what does the wifi saving option does on PSP? Does it force sticking on A/B/G radios?

EVDO on/off switch like 3g?

Hey everyone,
I personally have a GSM Touch Pro, but I have a few friends coming to me asking about modding their Sprint T. Pro's, obviously CDMA.
One of my favorite tweaks for the GSM version is turning off 3G when i'm not using the internet with a simple slider in the Comm Manager added by Advanced Config tool... will the same program allow switching from evdo rev a / rev 1? Will there be a battery life increase in using the slower speed when not in use? If I cant use schap's ACT, what program can allow the toggling on/off with relative ease for a not-so-tech-savy person who could at least learn a simple process if I show them how to do it?
Thanks for understanding my newbness in CDMA devices; and thank you for the extra hacks & tips I found through the links you all have here, found a few extras I haven't seen in my time lurking the GSM variants of the Touch Pro.
well i was searching the forum for this EXACT question... good thing it was answered
does anybody know?
Im probably more noob than all of you but to my understanding it wont work. On a gsm phone 3g is actually another form of cdma, so gsm 3g phones have two radios and can surf the web while on a call. So if im right a cdma phone only has one radio so if you turn that one off it will be on airplane mode.

found a mortscript... it works great.
If you download the advanced config tool, there is an option to set the data connection to disconnect after a set amount of time being inactive. That saves a lot of battery for me and it is automatic so it isn't dependent on if you remember to do it or not. You can set it to disconnect anywhere between 30 seconds and 10 minutes.

but does it shut off evdo aswell? i think just having data on is different from having your phone stay on evdo.. since evdo is only for data your phone uses more battery even if your not using data on an evdo signal.. and really 1x is only for text and calls.. for the people who arent on the internet all the time.. toggling evdo would save tons of battery
wow, old topic came back up ! >.>
The idea is allowing the checking of e-mail on a low-speed low-power connection (like blackberries on edge) so auto-disconnections are not very helpful..
the mortscript looks like it would work fairly easily.

[Q] Connects to mobile network even when wifi is available

Hi all
Not a power user's dilemma I'm afraid but I hope someone can help me out...
What's bugging me is that my wife's LG-P500 incurs a small charge every day because, despite all the settings telling me it should NOT connect to the internet via the mobile network at any time, it somehow still connects - even when wifi is available like at home.
This wouldn't be a big deal normally but because she's on a pre-pay txt only plan her credit gets used up quickly.
My HTC Wildfire uses NO mobile connection at all when I have wifi available. Any ideas why this should be happening with our LG-P500?
Great forums by the way and I'm slightly embarrassed to be raising this probably noob topic here but I can't find an answer anywhere else...
Thanks in advance!
I haven't seen that problem on my P500, with the void echo ROM (the stock firmware didn't stay on the phone long enough for me to try that).
The option to disable it is in:
Settings -> Wireless and network settings -> Mobile networks -> Data enabled (should be unchecked)
Or in the drop-down menu of the notification bar.
I'm not sure about the stock ROM, but on void, an additional icon appears on the notification bar whenever the mobile network is active.
You could also try disabling the option:
Settings -> Accounts & sync settings -> Background data (should be unchecked)
Thanks. I already did all the obvious stuff you mention, having seen it work fine on my Wildfire... Any other ideas out there?
Might this be related to Location Services using Cell tower information ?
Could try turning that off anyway.
If you don't want to use the mobile network for internet access, than go to Settings > Wireless & network settings > Mobile networks > Uncheck Data enabled .
If the network allows you, you can also select Network mode > GSM only, this will also save you some battery. For example, I only use wifi to connect to Internet on my phone, and I also checked the option "Use only 2G networks" (also saves battery), I'm connecting to my operator only for phone calls
What is your Wi-Fi sleep policy settings? Try setting it to Never.
When the phone goes into sleep mode, wifi is turned off to save on battery. May be that's the reason mobile network is getting connected in sleep mode. If u enable wifi policy to never sleep that will drain the battery. You can disable the mobile network from th3 notification bar that should help.
Many thanks for the help guys!
Wifi sleep: good idea, I'll look at that!
Location services: good idea, I'll look at that!
Data enabled: unchecked already.
The problem still strikes me as odd because although I have ALL the same apps (and quite a few more...), I don't have this problem with my little HTC Wildfire...
Update: the only way I could find to resove the issue was to invent and use a nonsense APN...
Wifi sleep was already ticked as "never" by the way.
Thanks again everyone who gave advice.
Yeah, I've also had reason to use an APN named "fake" with a proxy named 'fake", although i use "Z" now to save typing, LOL.
This is one of many things i would do when changing SIMs. I have had one SIM and phone that always set a new APN and this ended up costing me a few bucks in data fees before I re-changed the APN info.
I would also disable the data services, make sure WiFi was on (to provide priority data access) AND enable airplane mode.
Anyway, your experience has inspired me to check more deeply about my data usage. I don't like the idea of my phone doing data without my knowledge while it's in standy.
I prefer to manually choose which connection I would like to use, so if I'm using my data plan such as when I'm out, I go to notification and enable data. I only get 200mb a month so its easier for me than to always keep networks on even when I'm not using them. It also saves on the battery as well.
EDIT: you can check your data usage using 3g watchdog app, find it in android market
It easy to solve. Just install APNdroid
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.code.apndroid
It also has a widget. Works very well.

[Q] Help decrease or limit my data connection speed of EVDO

Yes you read it right.
When all are searching to increase their mobile data connection speed, here I am asking the opposite.
Is there any tweak or any app using which I can limit the the speed?
Pl note: I do not want my data to be disconnected but to run at lower speed that's all.
And I am trying to do that on my EVDO connection.
My photon is rooted, unlocked and Running on miui 2.5.25
huh
Not sure how you can do this or why

can change flow control in build prop, but I dont think the ics roms have that line, also you can try since you are on miui playing with their data control options may be able to accomplish your goal with it or at least come close to doing it..... its a very odd request have to say you are the first to want slower 3g.....**** if my 3g was any slower I'd end up smashing my phone....sprint service very very very crappyin my area....using the net speed test app from market I barely get close to 700 down laughable ping and upload doesn't even twitch....lol...gl man if you figure it out do share....lol

I was trying for this as my photon has a strange problem. The data gets disconnected automatically when the download speed crosses around 1.5 mbps.
I have observed this when using HD video on YouTube or some big file download
Near my office I have a very good signal and I get speeds up to around 2.2mbps and here connection gets disconnected very often during high data transfer. But near my home I get speeds up to 1.0to 1.5 mbps only and here data does not get disconnected.
Also near the office data connection is intact for normal browsing(like small file download or normal web page viewing).
So trying to figure out if I put a cap to my data speed will it resolve the issue.

do you have any battery saving apps installed or any settings switched to not allow background data?

None of the battery saving app as of now which i remember.
I am sure that may not be the issue as the problem is persistent from the day i rolled back to stock till today when i have tried CM7/MIUI/CM9.
Can there any android process that may be running in background that is disabling the data connection and making radio to reset after few mins once it detects high data transfer ?

[Q] 3G/WiFi data connection access control per App

Hi Guys,
I've been looking for a solution to my problem but found nothing solid so far.
Case looks like this: I'm traveling a lot. In Malaysia (where I live) I have unlimited data package and I don't really care how much data is downloaded by my apps via 3G or WiFi - in short, i don't care.
Problem starts when I'm traveling - if I'm abroad, I'm trying to minimize 3G data usage to save some money. Problem is that many "data hungry" apps start downloading the data as soon as they detect there is internet connection available. Most of the apps doesn't care if it's 3G or WiFi data connection. Some apps allow you to configure if they can use 3G or WiFi only - but not all.
I would like to be able to control if particular app has access to Internet via WiFi only or 3G+WiFi. Is there any way to achieve this?
P.S. O course - it would be a "dream coming true" if there was a way to control if App can use WiFi only or 3G+WiFi or "WiFi+3G (local) and WiFi Only (roaming). I don't this something like this exists but ... it would be nice
Thanks for hints in advance.

[Q] Application to manage/overrule mobile data connection

Hi, I wonder if it's possible to force a manual specified mobile data connection to be used.
e.g.
I tell the App that it should force "G" to be used instead "E" even if edge would've a better signal strength. because sometimes I am able to have "G" as data connection with 2or3 from 4 stripes but it switches randomly between "g" and "e" and "edge" has most of the time 4 of 4 stripes.
I just don't get the unnecessary switching between the two GSM data connection types. it's unnecessarily annoying because it's also stop the data transfer. it just su**
especially Samsung devices do a lot of unnecessary mobile data connection switching
we already can force between GSM and WCDMA. but we should be able to force within the different GSM data connections too.
so, would it be possible to code such an app? or is there something like that already available somewhere? did a lot of Google research but I end up with no results.
well, I can understand that this would be some sort of lower priority mod/app but whoever can effort the time and has the skills to write such an application could add the complete set of option to it.
- switch between e, G, H, LTE etc.
- set times when which data connection should be in use
- tell the App to use only GSM when the overall traffic is near a specified amount of data.
- a watch dog for established connections would be nice to and some sort of firewall to deny connections or other way around to have to specifically allow every connection
I have a 5GB high-speed data plan. and I would like to swap automatically to GSM only once I wasted 4GB of it to save a few bytes when I really need full speed.
I am not sure. maybe such a tool is kinda pointless on a smartphone but I would love to see such a tool.
thanks for the read
regards
