hi xda community i just bout this thunderbolt yesterday from some guy for cheap cuz he said it only makes it to the white htc screen i thought i would be able to fix it by now but i guess its beyond me.
i dont know how it got to this point i do know it has s-on and i can access fastboot however when i select recovery or factory reset it goes directly to the htc white screen and bootloops until it dies. also charging is very difficult like this takes me about 30 mins just to get into fastboot cuz i have to keep messing with it.
any and all help would greatly be appreciated. thanks.
Sounds like there may still be an PG05IMG on the sdcard?
Since you have no clue what has been done, I would flash an RUU to get back to stock and move forward from there.
Take your SDcard out and format it. Download a recent RUU, a quick google search will find you the file. Rename the file exactly to PG05IMG.zip and place it on the root of the SDcard. Boot into Hboot and it should automatically detect the zip and go forward from there. In case you were not aware, you boot into Hboot by holding volume down and power to turn the phone on.
Make sure you get the battery charged up a bit before you try this.
I JUST TRYED DOING THAT RIGHT NOW BUT IT SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT THE VERSION IS OLDER PRESS POWER TO REBOOT SO I GUESS THE VERSION I WAS FLASHING IS OLDER THEN WHAT IT ALREADY HAS. IM DOWNLOADING WHAT I THINK IS THE NEWEST ONE RIGHTNOW BUT IT ENDS IN .EXE
NOT SURE WHAT TO DO WITH THAT. ITS THIS ONE...
RUU_Mecha_GINGERBREAD_S_VERIZON_WWE_2.11.605.5_Radio_0.01.78.0906w_2__NV_8K_1.41_9K_1.64_release_219938_signed.exe
THE ONE THAT I TRIED TO FLASH IN HBOOT WAS THIS ONE...
PG05IMG_Mecha_VERIZON_WWE_1.10.605.3_Radio_1.15.00.0128w_3_NV_8K_1.39_9K_1.61_release_170484_signed.zip (THIS ONE GAVE ME THE ERROR ABOUT VERSION TOO OLD)
SORRY BOUT CAPS DONT KNOW WHAT I WAS THINKING.
Also forgot to mention it says LOCKED in the top of hboot
Update: update process started but hangs at step 7 mdm9k just says updating... So frustrating.
Help me please.

Try flashing this. Rename PG05IMG.zip
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...-fixes-several-issues-from-the-previous-leak/
I tryed that one last night too. Same results just hangs.
Do you guys think im bricked?
Not sure if this will work.....maybe try getting s-off and rooting it???use revolutionary.
i think i have to use adb for that and i cannot get into the rom at all just the white htc screen of death. so i cant enable usb debugging.
Try this rom. Its the latest stock gingerbread rom minus the mdm9k.img file and should bypass that during install in hboot. I cannot say this will work if the current mdm9k partition is messed up, but it is worth a shot. hope this helps.

I have one other idea. However I wont be able to get the new file uploaded till later tonight.
No prob thanks for your help ill be checking later then.
Ok, same file as last time. no mdm9k.img file so it should bypass (hypothetically). It should have the HTC security header included to allow the flash. Not sure if it will, since the method I used is experimental. It just wont pass security check and the update wont continue if it doesn't work.

update: nope. once again didn't ask me if i wanted to install update
Hmm, at the moment I am out of ideas. What have you tried via fastboot? Being s-on I know your options are limited, but it's worth asking or investigating.
i'v tried everything i can think of so far i haven't found many ruu that even ask me if i want to install the update and the ones that do ask me all hang during the the same step. at this point i am desperate ill try any file anyone throws at me so let me know what you have. S-on SUCKS.
So what happens when you do try and run an RUU.exe say the 2.11.605.5 stock RUU?
At a certain point the program will drop your phone into fastboot recovery where it does the flashing. This may sound like a dumb question, but has it been able to get to that point? If I am understanding you, you are able to get the phone to boot into bootloader and fastboot. Which I assume you can send commands via adb fastboot?
***LOCKED*** On Bootloader
Hello All,
First of all thanks for the awesome easy guide !!
This is the first time I am rooting my HTC Tbolt and have had an issue to start with.
Used the instructions in the link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1401959
After I download the 2.11.605.5 downgrade zip, I rename it, put in on the SD Card and go to HBOOT and it installs the downgrade just fine.
But at the end of this process, when I try to get the MR4 Radio onto the SD Card and install it, it simply does not happen. HBoot checks for the file, finds it, but nothing happens. I have renamed in properly and followed instructions to the dot.
I also noticed a ***LOCKED*** right on top of the screen and I think this could be an issue.
Can I go ahead and proceed with the Revolutionary Root Technique ? Would this be possible at this point ?
Is there anyway I can get Flash the MR4 Radio before I actually root ?
Also, would I be able to flash the MR4 Radio onto my device after Rooting ?
Any help is much appreciated !
Thanks in advance !
Cheers !
Hi everyone,
I've found the information in these forums to be very helpful and have never posted on anything before, but I have a question that I'm not finding a good answer for.
I successfully unlocked my bootloader and rooted last night and am now running scrosler's CleanROM. However I want to return to stock using the RUU from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1338916
When I run the RUU I am getting stuck at the HTC recovery screen, and the windows installer tells me that the RUU is not compatible. I tried extracting the rom.zip, renamed it to PH98IMG.zip, copied it to the SDcard and load it in HBOOT, but it won't work either.
Any ideas? I mainly just want to make sure I have a working method to return to stock just in case I accidentally brick the phone at some point, but otherwise I'm good for now.
You run the ruu from your pc if it's like other htcs

Neither of these answers attempt to address the issue of why the RUU doesn't work.
Have you tried both?

Here's a more specific account of what happens when I run the RUU.
I get the progress bar that says "Sending......." but then after a few seconds I get the following error:
Error [155] unknown error
The ROM Update Utility cannot update your Android phone
Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again
I've spent the last hour Googling this error and have found that it is a known error with other HTC devices but can't find any info on the Rezound.
Found this helpful thread for a similar issue with the Desire:

Tried starting the RUU with the phone already in fastboot but that didn't change anything.

I get the little progress bar in the upper right corner of HBOOT that shows it is reading the file, however it doesn't present me with the option to flash it. Instead it just skips to the HBOOT menu.

Interesting, I wonder if anyone has ran it this ruu successfully
Solved
Figured it out. On a hunch I re-locked the bootloader and tried running the RUU using the Windows installer and it worked. It must be some sort of security check thing. I'll just unlock the bootloader again after it's done flashing. It might be good for someone with more seniority on the forum to make this information more visible in case anyone else runs into this issue.

It has come to my attention that a number of regional OTA updates are now rolling out, specifically US and some Asian areas appear to be in progress.
The reason for this post is for those users who specifically want the regional HoneyComb variant for their region and language, which is perfectly natural and
something which I completely understand.
Firstly some ground rules, so that nobody feels I'm ignoring them specifically:
1. Do not PM me if you "soft brick" ( white screen with HTC logo )
2. Do no PM me with questions about what to do next.
3. Do not PM me about anything to do with upgrades PERIOD.
I will not answer PMs about OTA upgrades unless I specifically request that you PM me. So as you can see I'm not ignoring anyone specifically, I'm ignoring everyone who PM's me about upgrades. The reason for this is as my signature says, questions should be asked in the open forums so everyone can benefit from the information.
Please post any questions or problems encountered in this thread and not in multiple other threads. I will do what I can to help when I can as I'm sure will others.
Above all else don't panic. If your are S-OFF almost anything is fixable provided to don't panic and do something foolish.
What I need in order to give you the simplest and most painless upgrade process is a copy of the OTA zip file for your region.
If you have already gone ahead and tried to apply the OTA and are now stuck on a white screen with the HTC logo, here is what you need to do.
You need to have fastboot working to do this.
1. Get the OTA zip file from you device. Is should be located somewhere on the SD card.
2. Unzip the file using 7-zip or some other zip tool that ignore the signature on the file, windows built-in zip will not work.
3. Inside the file you will find a file called "firmware.zip", copy this file to the directory where you have fastboot installed.
4. Download this hboot file:
http://www.multiupload.com/8BI4CWZWMU the MD5SUM is: 6812365feef394e2d1e3c1cd5ab67d24
CHECK the md5sum before proceeding
Copy this file to where you have fastboot installed.
5. boot to fastboot mode and run the following:
Code:
fastboot flash hboot hboot-6.11.1111.nb0
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
fastboot reboot
You should then reboot into Honeycomb.
If you continue to encounter the white screen or otherwise cannot boot, then go to the easy upgrade thread in the development forum, download and flash the "light" version appropriate for your device from post 1.
You should then boot to recovery. Post a message here and wait for assistance.
If this information makes you unsure of whether or not to take the upgrade, that's fine. Please do yourself an everyone else like you a service, when presented with the option to upgrade "Select the download and install later" option and upload the downloaded OTA zip file somewhere where I can get it.
Works !
Just to confirm that OTA from s-off indeed caused white HTC screen (probably due to incompatability of s-off old version of hboot which remained on machine and recovery).
But solution in post 1 worked. Now on HC with new hboot s-off (but w/o CWM...).
Thanks.http://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Just want to say thanks
This is my first post in the XDA forums. I don't even know if I am putting this in the correct section. Just want to say thank you for enabling me to make a seamless transition to honeycomb and making it a thing of beauty. I would have done this earlier but I couldn't find the donate button and then once I did I forgot I didn't have enough posts to post this into the developer section. So it is quite evident that if a complete NOOB like me can do this the process couldn't have been made any easier. Once again thank you. A couple of beers on the way (I think that's the correct term lol)

Need help stuck on white screen with s-off
Okay, I need assistance please. I bought a Flyer on the Marketplace and gave it to my Mom as a gift, I ran the RUU to go back to stock. I carelessly did not check that the device had s-off Revolitionary and tried to install the HC update. Now I am stuck on the white screen. I have ADB on my pc, I have used it many times. If I cannot boot past the white screen how can I extract the Firmware from my sd card? I checked the developement thread mentioned above and this is one of the steps. I currently do not have a copy of the OTA on my pc. I have the US wifi version of the Flyer from Best Buy.
I tried to run the GB RUU but since my device won't boot past the white screen the pc does not see the device when attempting to run the RUU.
I really need to get this back up and running for my Mom, she loves it and is pretty upset that it is unusable currently.
I am trying not to panic, can anyone help me?
you have come to the right place. Standby for a little and I'm sure Globaltron can fix you up. He's seen this a hundred times. Just be patient. He's in Europe so may already be asleep.
In the meantime if you know how to get into fastboot from the white screen, put the Flyer into fastboot and try executing the RUU again.

[Q] Getting "Error [140]: Bootloader Version Error" when I try to downgrade my HBoot
Okiedoke. So, I've got a little experience with the Evo 3D, but my last one was shoddily done and I don't think I ever even attained S-OFF on it, so when I had to get mine replaced by Sprint, I figured I'd follow a guide and do this thing right.
I first followed the HTC method of unlocking my bootloader and rooting the device, and then installed TWRM. I was using my phone for about a week before I just today decided I had enough time to look at these instructions and follow them. I successfully used this PG86IMG file (from this thread) to brick my device, followed the instructions from the original thread up to 27, and then realized I might have a problem on my hands. I can't boot my phone into the OS anymore (I get a sudden slowdown and then freeze of the boot animation before it restarts itself), but I can still get into the bootloader and Fastboot. So, I figured, why not just run the 1.13 RUU EXE in Fastboot? So I tried, but every time I try to run an RUU EXE (I've tried several, both 1.13 and 2.17 versions), after the RUU pushes the file to the phone and checks signatures I get error 140. I saw that Unknownforce said here that these instructions are "extremely dated" and to use the new ones in his newer thread, but I'm not sure where to pick up.
In short, I would love it if someone could recognize what the next step I need to take is. Ask me for any further information I haven't provided, I'll be more than glad to help you guys help me!
I'm having a similar issue, the only difference between our issues being that I get Error 131: CUSTOMER ID ERROR. Still working on how to fix it.

I tried this two different ways:
Got a 1.13 PG86IMG ZIP from Shipped ROMs, renamed to PG86IMG and put on my SD card, but my phone didn't want anything to do with it (it would load and check it, but then kick me back out to the main bootloader screen). Then I downloaded a 1.13 RUU EXE and extracted the "rom" file from it, renamed and slapped on card. Phone loads and checks correctly, but then returns the "Main version is older!" error.

Then your misc version didn't downgrade as it should have. Go to the main thread and flash the firmware zip file that's listed there, it will put you up to 1.58 hboot, then start that process from scratch.

Okiedoke. Just to verify (sorry for being thick), when you say "Main Thread" you're talking about this one, right? I ask because the only firmware I see there is for Virgin, and I'd rather keep Sprint firmware on my phone (unless it really, truly doesn't change anything but the name).
Also, your method requires launching a Linux distro, yes? Is it OK if it's off a live USB, like the Ubuntu installer OS? For some reason I can't get my machine to cooperate when I try to install a permanent Linux OS (something to do with UEFI settings, I think).

I actually ended up pulling an old laptop out from storage and putting Ubuntu on that so I can have an actual workstation. I ran the PG86IMG you mentioned, which got my phone back up and running with HBOOT 1.58. Then I followed all of your instructions to the letter, down to where you say to run the 1.13 RUU EXE. I tried running that on Ubuntu using WINE, but I kept getting an error. Then I tried running it on Windows 8, but I can't seem to get the EXE to detect my phone is connected. Then I even tried running the RUU in a WinXP virtual machine, but I can't seem to get that to work either. I then tried simply using the 1.13 ZIP as PG86IMG, but I'm getting the same error where after it loads and scans the file, it kicks me out to the main bootloader screen with no warnings or error messages.
At this point, what would be the better option? Should I attempt Revolutionary and get S-Off, then redo the instructions? Or should I do something else? Do I even need to install the 1.13 RUU? I assume I do, because my phone is unusable if I don't...

If the bootloader is not saying anything about the zip file it's not a valid signed zip. Find another copy of it or extract it from the ruu exe. Run the exe and open up the temp folder and search for rom.zip then rename to PG86IMG(.zip) and put on sdcard. Then try again. You need special drivers for windows 8, which is why that didn't work, the other two are emulated versions of Windows, and don't have the proprietary drivers to work properly either. So unless you have access to another windows pc that isn't 8, your only option is to get the sdcard the correct file.

Well this probably won't help with my issue, but this guy seems to have found a solution for yours.

No dice. I can't change my CID without getting an error, presumably because I can't HTCDev unlock (when I get to the final step, I get success on fastboot but never the prompt on the phone).

Put the PG86IMG(.zip) on the sdcard and boot to bootloader and update that way. The ruu exe checks the Cid, the bootloader flash doesn't.

Oh my god, I feel like a dumbass for not pulling the rom from the EXE before saying anything o.o
Anywho, I pushed the 1.13 PG86IMG correctly, then ran Revolutionary on Ubuntu, and now my phone's S-Off and 1.40! Thanks so much! Hand to god, when I get paid I'm sending you beer money.

Haha, glad it worked :highfive:
hi,..
I have an HTC Desire S,and like everyone else I want to upgrade from GB (2.3.5) to ICS (4.0) I downloaded the RUU from here:htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads and I downloaded the WWE one (404mb).
Now I have installed the latest HTC Sync and I got the RUU setup to start and proceed until it gets to the point where it say "sending..." and this process takes forever without changing, the message says at the bottom "Remember, the operation will take about 10 minutes.".
any ideas why it is not completing the setup and stuck at sending,.... ?
help is much appreciated.

Do you have the correct fastboot drivers? You can check in your Device Manager to make sure there are no errors there. Also, have you relocked the bootloader? This step is important for most HTC phones for the RUU to run correctly. A possible easier method would be just to download this: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B-TZlsB2RGXja3d0dnBoRGFOTGc/edit and put it on your external storage without changing the name and then reboot to the bootloader screen and if everything is working right, it should pick up the file and start checking it to make sure everything is in place and then will prompt you to update or cancel. Just let it do it's thing. Alternatively, there is also a way to pick the rom.zip that the RUU extracts when it is preparing itself on your PC from a hidden folder and copy that to a normal folder and run some commands to install from there, but let's check the other methods first...
