GPS is amazing, shows me in my car in real time:) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I love the gps on this phablet.
Also, does anyone know of a gps Android app that can average GPS points?
Having a northing and easting mode would be a huge plus as well.

Why wouldnt it do that? My SGS4G and my Evo 4g all did that.

Yes, the GPS is great, the best mobile unit I've used, excluding TopCon (survey quality GPS).
the aerial was on google maps, and i was in my car parked in the same spot as i was when the aerial was shot.

gps beats the gs2

Idea for program?

Well since our moguls can do so much including -find speed cameras show speed limit gps webcam modem (universal remote kinda) and alot more i was thinking bout something since 2 days ago 2 radar detectors got stolen from my dads mercedes and my moms surbervan (we think our lawnmowers did it) so i thought hey why not turn our mogul into a radar detector or am i just crazy i have no programming experience (tried to make a hello world app and failed....)

For something like this, software is not sufficient. Appropriate hardware is also required. Same like GPS - slapping a GPS program is not enough, an actual GPS hardware must be present. Luckily, Mogul has GPS built in. But it does not have any radar sensors. So writing a program will not help without having the hardware required.
I have an Escort Passport. I just received a mailing about their newest radar that you can upgrade the speed cameras and red light cameras to. Though I am sure there is no way for a titan to function as a radar detector, there may be a way for someone to create a program using GPS and the location of stationary lasers and cameras.
Good idea. Though I live in a town of 14000 and the abode speed detection devices will not see my area in my lifetime, could be useful in traveling to bigger cities as traditional radar detectors don't have the ability to detect red light and speed cameras.
there already is a program that tells you when your approching the speed limit or a speed camera so im just crazY?
why do you need a radar detector? just buy a car they can't catch you in. ;-) vrooom vrooom
Follow Up: Search "Radar" in titles only
I saw a Hermes thread where Tom Tom 7 lists the permanent speed cameras I spoke of above.

Wow, how many lawnmowers do you have? More importantly, what kind of Lawnmowers do you have, Transformers? I can tell you this, my Toro would NEVER have gotten away with stealing my radar detector! Actually, my Toro recently went missing. Perhaps I should place my radar detector square in front of one of the xenon headlights, crank up the HIGH beams, and demand that it tell me where my lawnmower went!
well my dad runs 2 car body shops so we have 3 cars in the back 2 of em classics and 1 of em a mercedes we go to church in the door was apparently open mysteriously and our radar detector was gone same in surburvan we have lik 6 ppl that come to mow our lawns and it happneded the same day they where here in the moring.. and the program that tells you when your near a speed camera is called speedsentry http://www.smartphonejunkie.com/showthread.php?t=167174&highlight=speed+sentry

3D Maps on Eris?

I grabbed the new Google Maps update yesterday and I guess the new 3D features aren't supported on the Eris. It looks like some of the people over in the Hero forums have said that they have 3D working, while others do not. Has anyone on the Eris been able to get this working?
Hero ROMS also have Multi touch maps, and Eris ones don't.
That could be the reason.
Even my Samsung Fascinate (they say it has the fastest processor and graphics money can buy, in a phone) doesn't have the 360° rotation, so I'm not too too surprised the Eris doesn't have this feature either!
I don't have 3d maps but when I use nav then the map tilts about... Very neat!

Yeah, I wasn't really surprised that the rotation and tilting wasn't working. I was just curious. Is this a kernel support issue?
Fortunately, it looks like the 3D buildings are showing up now. I must not have been looking in the right place or zooming in enough.

How is GPS?

I've seen alot of posts of people getting their new SGS2, but I haven't seen any GPS results. I expect it to be the same as the international, but has anyone used gps test or gps status to see how well gps works?

Really? I was at a Waffle House in Atlanta, GA and my GPS said I was in Chattanooga, TN and no matter what I did it kept locking on there.
I'd be using Google Navigation and it would take like 2 minutes to lock before it started navigating.
I'll echo the good user experience of most of these folks -
Wife tried hers on the way home - google nav got an accurate lock in about 15 seconds.
I waited till i got home and installed gps status - 4 sats within 5 seconds, 7 at 12 second first location fix, inside my metal roofed house on an overcast day. Had 11 sats by about 30 seconds or so - but never reported better than a 25m accuracy...not sure what's up with that. Did not clear or redownload agps data.
Mine just took about 7 seconds to get a lock after opening up Maps fresh and took about 15 seconds burrowed inside my downstairs apartment. Very good compared to my old Captivate and even faster than my stock Infuse - and MUCH better than my Infused version on 2.2.3 (no disrespect to gtg though, it was as good as it could get I think).
GPS is definitely wayyy better than the Captivate ever was!! I got lock within 10 seconds... I'm not disappointed by this phone at all..

Various Reviews. The Exynos APU also have a GPS baseband circuit built-in but Samsung decided to use an expensive dedicate GPS chip instead. I think the reputation of the poor GPS in original Galaxy S forced Samsung to do this.

Exactly. The SoC does have integrated GPS functionality, but Sammy chose not to use it. In fact, as you probably know, it's been rumored since the i9100 launched that the brand new SirFStar IV chip was in the Galaxy S2. I'm sure the SoC solution worked, but seeing as "gps issues" was probably one of the biggest complaints against the old Galaxy S, and in such a thin phone there isn't tons of extra space to put a huge antenna, they probably wanted to put the best GPS chip in that they could find!
The GS2 will never rival the reception of a dedicated GPS unit with a big ol' ceramic patch antenna, but it should work about as well as is possible with such a small antenna. At least, that's the hope.
PS, this is supposedly the GPS chip in the GS2. Which interestingly enough actually contains it's own 109 MHz ARM7 CPU. Normally GPS is handled by a combination of the baseband and the SoC, so it's gonna be interesting to see what sort of tweaks and upgrades will be available in the future by virtue of having a dedicated GPS chip.
And non sequitur for those interested, that means there's an ARM core in the baseband, another in the GPS, and 2 in the SoC. Quite a few cores for a tiny little device...

Mixed Feelings about my Tranformer Prime

This is the first tablet I have purchased but not the first one I have used and I bought it to accompany my Samsung Galaxy S2 and my iPhone but I must confess I am not a big Apple fan.
Why am I happy?
I have a Quad Core tablet
It's shiny and new
It isn't an iPad
loving the keyboard
generally works quite well
Why am I unhappy?
GPS - I wanted fully functional GPS
Exporting video in Movie STudio it causes the TFP to reboot.
Many applicaton crashes including google apps
in hindsight i should of waited for a 3g model
Im hoping ics will be the answer to my prayers and asus provide a 3g add on module but time will tell.

I think there are 10's of threads you could have added your opinion to. But, that said, I think if you're hoping for ICS to magically make the Prime a better option for you, you're going to be disappointed. And I'd not hold out for a "3g add on module"--the 3G version of the Prime will be a completely new, redesigned device.
Sounds like you should return your Prime and wait for something that better meets your needs. And just for the record, I only have one app that routinely crashes on my Prime, and it's problematic on other Honeycomb tablets as well. Otherwise, I've found the Prime to be remarkably stable.

ASUS seriously should have waited for ICS until they sold the Prime. The above post is the perfect example of what happens if you rush a generally super nice device with totally crappy software on it...
@OP: Iam sure you will be less sad with ICS
I'm still hoping that Asus will come up with a plastic window solution like the Ipad for its gps problem, they can easily retool the case and fab the plastic insert.
As far as apps go, its not Prime fault. those apps need updating from developers that made them. Google earth works perfectly now as it was just updated the other day. as far as that movie studio goes, I had the same thing happen. I don't like it really. So you can't fault the device from a software standpoint. because that always can be improved. Plus you can expect alot of apps not to be working in ICS because not all apps updated yet to support it. The apps are getting there but alot still out there that needs ICS support.
The GPS issue I can understand. You can bet though that 3g version will be at a minimum $100 more plus you will be tied into a massive data plan which requires a premium extra fee because its a tablet. Prime is still a Good choice. even without GPS working.
I've had my for three days now. I'm deciding if I'm going to return mine or not.
Pros:
Screen and brightness is second to none. Super IPS actually hurts my eyes. Marvelous.
Wifi works fine for me. Mostly like my OG ipad
Camera quality is great. Video and pictures great.
Games like Riptide and Madden play super.
Flash websites like HBO go.com work great compare to OG Transformer that I owned.
I like the when you correct a word it zooms in on the area without a circle.
Kind of fun to hold. So very thin.
Having 64gb thanks to my SD card
With volume+ app. Speakers very nice.
Charges fast
Battery life continues to get better
No screen lag for me when transitioning.
ICS coming soon.
Cons:
GPS is brutally awful. Not sure if its a deal breaker.
Bluetooth and wifi don't work together like they should.
Lack of accessories.
Do I feel this is better than the first TF (owned for 6 months)? Yes.
Is it better than the current tablets now out (including I pad 2 wifi to wifi)? Yes.
Will this be the Blackberry Playbook of 2012 (considering major flaws for some)? Decisions. The last thing I want to see in a couple months is TF Prime for 299.00 at BB.
This thing is going for a premium on EBay right now as well.

I know it might be a matter of, "It's a functionality that should work, end of story..."
But can I ask you what your personal use for GPS is in your particular case? I had a Samsung GT10.1 for 8 months and I used the gps maybe three times. And even then it was locked onto a signal fairly quickly because the used the auto assist wifi signal, and I cannot fathom a usage instance that requires gps without wifi.

release first then ice, or wait for pics then release.
for all Ive heard before the release were come on, just release it already, pics, hc I don't care.
and not everyone start saying they should wait till pics to release it. tough crowd
It's the current battle of selling points with iCS, gps and 3/4g being the main contenders. Any new tablet that does not feature these will suffer from lackluster sales, imo.

I bought this as a work device/toy. At the moment I don't know what I want to use GPS for but I just want my tablet to do what it says it should do on the tin. I don't like Apple but they seem to have set the bar really high and the iPad pretty much does what it says it will do.
I understand what you are saying and it may turn out that I never need it but I paid for it and would at least like the choice to not use it rather than not use it because of an Asus major design flaw.
To add to the list of cons it reboots every morning whether it has been charged or not.
Why wasn't this added to the rest of the gripe threads? Nothing stated here that hadn't already been a rebeating of the dust that used to be the skeleton of the dead horse.
I think we all get it. People always strive to get somethng, then when they get it, they want more.. some more than others.

I don't expect everyone would do this, but Come'on these statements like, "I never used gps so I don't know why anyone else would", just expose your lack of imagination.
my 2 cents:
Of the 3 tablets I now own...the tf101, ipad 1, and the prime...the prime easily wins the day. Its the best tablet I have ever used.
There are a few niggles.
1. The tf101 has the best wifi of the three. The prime and the ipad 1 score exactly the same in my testing for wifi performance....which is good enough for me. Not sure why people are griping about wifi so much while mine is par or better than the ipad 1...at 50+ feet and 4 walls from my router I still get 3-4 Mbps. Netflix, etc streams beautifully from the farthest corners in my house.
I don't often bother with bluetooth on my android tablets so I have yet to test this.
2. I rarely use my tablets for GPS so this is not a deal breaker for me. I have an offline GPS system anyway that does not require live data connection which I prefer on the road. I have yet to test the prime GPS...right now GMAPS snaps up my location using IP address I imagine.
After that this tablet plays high profile 1080p mkv files both from my network and from the sdcard without a hitch, has a GORGEOUS display, slim, light, has great battery life and runs honeycomb better than any tablet out there (I've fiddled with just about all of them). ICS will be the icing on the cake.
Sometimes these forums can turn us into quibblers. I never would have noticed the issues raised here on my typical usage of the prime or any of my tablets. For example, I never knew the TF101 has such great wifi performance compared to the Ipad 1 until I tested it because of this forum. The ipad always seemed just fine to me and so does the prime....and really thats all that matters.

In all likelihood it sounds as if the assisted GPS will serve your purposes just fine then. I really do not understand why anyone thought this tablet was going to be a Garmin. I also thought (and suppose I am or could be worng), that this was always advertised as aGPS. GPS does work when it is assisted by wifi, and it works pretty well when it's not. I wouldn't rely on it to drive, but I don't know why anyone would rely on anything other than a dedicated GPS to navigate - I certainly never take off on my bicycle to place unknown with just my phone, I always have my Garmin. If someone needs to navigate then they need to buy a dangerous Garmin and not think they "Got lucky" and scored a $500 tablet that allows included a real GPS that costs at least $100+ app on it's own.
Anyway.....the rebooting thing sounds like a real pain.. Mine has never reboot randomly. You say it happens in the morning, and I wonder what the culprit could Be? Are you powering it up and then it reboots or waking it Up? I wonder if it's an app.

I am going to use marine apps as well. Do you guys think if you have a GPS lock the Prime will keep it because the speed of a sailboat is not too fast?
Accuracy doesn`t really matter.
My phone with google navigation is perfect as a GPS, I don't need something four times bigger that won't ever fit anywhere on my car and won't charge on the car adaptator.

Maybe you will have better luck than me. But, my Prime couldn't keep a lock, motionless, in the same orientation and location. The GPS just seemed to lose everything and started searching again, for no reason. That was a deal killer for me. If Asus had offered to fix this one problem, it would have been a real keeper! Instead the way they handled it just made me lose all confidence in their ability to support a quality product.
Be prepared to hear that you shouldn't expect GPS to work but that's no problem, and why would you want to use it on a tablet anyway? It would appear that most happy Prime users don't get out much or realize that an automobile is not the only use for GPS!

Evo 3d chipset supports Glonass GPS

I've just read that SE enables glonass on there 2011 Xperia line of phones and that our Evo 3d also supports Glonass, it just needs to be enabled!
Read it on this Sensation topic!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1395095
And here a link to a Qualcomm blog about glonass support in our chipset:
http://www.qualcomm.com/media/blog/2011/12/15/gps-and-glonass-dual-core-location-your-phone
Hi,
I wonder how it can actually be enabled, since HTC obviously has not enabled it in their Radio ROM for the Evo 3D - so the chipset supports GLONASS, but HTC does not unlock this feature, why?

Hi,
I wonder if there is any news on this topic, I found that on some other phones, it can be unlocked using a code in diagnosis mode, is there something we can do anything about the Evo3D?
Just drives me crazy to know the chipset can support a feature that, I don't know for which reason, HTC simply did not enable

Because in Russia folks already got it enabled, in rest of the world GPS rules the world, GLONASS is more country based, Russia in this case.
Very awesome if true Better accuracy is always good (Unless you are operating a machine gun.. then accuracy can be 'too' good lol).
DELETED
One possible reason for HTC to leave Glonass support out if it is available might be because it's not used outside of the former Soviet Union so without really gaining much you would probably take a battery hit on a phone which certainly can't afford it.
Well, it's actually better for battery life. watch the vid from qualcomm.
I'd love to have glonass on my evo 3d, i use gps daily and it could definitely benefit from a gps boost!
A Check Box
I do think there is a check box for it in the qpst service programing console. I have not tried it myself tho.

GLONASS definitely works around the world just like GPS. I'm pretty sure it is enabled on the EVO 3D because when I check satellite connections I will have nearly 20 sometimes. Pretty sure it is a combination of GPS and GLONASS. I'm in the US.
So nobody thinks this is important - is it???

How do you know its connecting to glonass and not just GPS?

Because there's only like 18 gps satellites and I constantly connect to 22-26
Never mind, apparently there's thirty. I was incorrect I apologize.

So I was wrong. Like xblackvalorx said there are 31 GPS satellites. According to this website:
http://odroid.foros-phpbb.com/t924-...why-does-it-matter-if-your-device-supports-it
If you download the GPS test app and see what sattelites you are connected to 1-31 are GPS. Satellites numbered 65-88 are GLONASS. I downloaded the app and checked. I got 18 or 20 sattelites numbered anywhere 1-30 but nothing higher. I believe this indicates that GLONASS support is not turned on on my phone.
