Hi
I want to root my atrix 4G again, I had it rooted on 2.3.4 Gingerbread but I upgraded the software when 2.3.6 (4.5.141 came out. When I was using 2.3.4 I had used Pete's Root Tools. Has there been an update to this app?? I don't want to use the command line way to root this version because I don't wanna brick my phone. Is there another way just like there was in 2.3.4 with Pete's Tools in the latest version 2.3.6?
Please help!
Thanks!!
Wait, you're worried about bricking your phone by using command line, but are happy to try a random app? That makes no sense at all...
All that rooting apps do is execute the same commands you'd be typing in. At least when you're doing it yourself you KNOW which commands you're issuing and whether they worked. If something does go wrong, you will be able to see where and why; as opposed to writing yet another "clicked a button, phone stopped working, WTF just happened!?" post.
PS, I don't think it is possible to brick the phone trying to root it.

Search is your best friend. I just posted a guide two days ago.

You need to give more info, are you on ATT? or overseas?
Command line is MUCH safer than an app that you don't even know what it's doing.
I was sketched out myself doing it all and frankly have no idea if I did it the recommended way, but it worked, and was fairly easy.. For the command line stuff if you're nervous just look at like 3 or 4 different write ups... the commands will be basically all the same...
I read through like 3 and watched a couple youtube videos on it...
Although that's always been my biggest gripe about this place, there isn't ever just a clear cut simple explination or walk through of everything, it's like learning from a Greek, they make you figure it out as a method of teaching... which can be good or bad mainly bad IMO...
but I can't offer you clear instructions so good luck!
I agree. Many of the guides out there are not much help. That is why I made the guide linked below. If you can't follow it, you shouldn't be messing with your phone.

There is a tool called super one click. It works the same as petes root tool. I agree with the above mentioned comments though. Learn to manually do it yourself.

It doesn't work on GB236. None of the automated scrips do. But I agree, doing it manually is a good learning experience.

Definitely find a good guide and figure out how to do it with command line, I spent 2 hours messing with super one click (kept failing) then about 15 minutes later had it done with command line. searching it took about 3 seconds to find a link to a guide...
Hey guys, its atrixno4g and i was wondering if their is away to rom the atrix running 2.3.6 with .141. Oh and if someone could tell me about this unlocked-bootloader thing is all about ( is it when the phone is unlocked?) and how to get the clockworkmod recovery i think its called.. I recently got this phone and without doing any research i used a program called RSD Lite and flashed some sbf to downgrade or something and instead bricked my phone- but i fixed it now. So basically can someone just give me a brief summary about all this, i dont want to brick my phone again.
Thanks.

It would take more of my own time to explain it all and provide all of the links then it would for you to find out yourself.
Search-lazy much?
Sorry but by asking questions like that you are effectively invalidating and making worthless all the hard work and effort put into writing all those tutorials and explanations in other threads. Not nice.

I rooted and unlocked my bootloader a few hours ago using the automatic bootloader unlocker tool
But like everyone said you should search because all of this is included in the tutorial here just choose the option 3 for the AT&T version and continue

Yeah, they are outdated. Like the bootloader thread, its outdated, but its still the way to do it. Theres no newer way. After that, root it. After you root it just install cwm from the market don't follow any threads on it.

Like everyone has said you gotta search. A sign you haven't even looked in those threads is the fact you said they're outdated even though they have responses that are very recent, indicating people with your version and firmware might be commenting. It's a lot of reading and it should be because if you mess it up you could brick your phone. Read everything you can and then read it again. I can guarantee you can unlock, get clockworkmod working, and flash a ROM onto your phone (my guarantee is limited to the US AT&T atrix)
Thanx for everything guys- now i root first or unlock bootloader?

How about you just follow this guide?

Coming from an s3 I am wondering if this may be true. Toolkit to unlock and root. Then a Odin image to revert to stock if needed

My 2 cents, for what it's worth. Toolkits should be banned from Android. They just allow people to do stuff that is well over their head, and when they fail, the user has an "OH ****" moment and quite possibly, makes things worse trying to recover. You should learn how to do it manually so you know what you're doing, and doing anything manually also forces you to learn a few things in the process that can save you later.
Also, we already have a method back to stock, so I'm not sure why that's still needed.

This is a really good point.
When I rooted my Thunderbolt, I tried using a toolkit, and it didn't work. I was stuck halfway through the root process with no way back and no idea how to continue.
As it turned out, the download wasn't quite perfect, one of the images I was flashing to get s-off was corrupt. The toolkit never checked. I damn near bricked my phone because I was a noob and used a toolkit.
My advice is, don't do it, not for your first time. Once you understand how to recover if the toolkit fails, then you can use one. But not before.
I rooted my HTC Eris before there was a one click root/unlock app. Imagine a noob who knows nothing about Android setting up SDK and flashing images with adb. This was before you could find noob friendly guides and asking questions almost always got you flamed. I had no idea what I was doing. Once I finally rooted and unlocked I flashed a rom that boot looped. My first ever XDA post was "HELP!! Am I Bricked??".
Moral of the story, I did it the hard way and learned a little along the way. I've rooted/modded every device I've owned since.

Yep I don't think youre broke in yet unless you've went through a few minute to an hour of sweating bullets thinking you now own a 700 dollar paper weight. First time I rooted was the original adb push method with the bolt. I skipped a step and fouled it up but recovered by just figuring it out. (Mainly cause I didn't want to get flamed) anyway. Always wanting the simple way out is not always the best. Besides it doesn't get a whole lot easier than using casual. Took like 15 minutes and 8 of that was waiting on the first flash. Its literally 3 steps. It would be that with a toolkit.
I know how to do it. Just that doing it over and over again is time cosuming

Doing it via a toolkit isn't going to save any significant amount of time as you would still need to have the images downloaded and then flash them, both of which are going to be the two longest parts of the process. There also shouldn't be a reason to ever have to unlock again as there are stock restore packages that will retain the unlock status of the phone.

Well said! I used one click methods on my OG Evo when I was a noob and was constantly scared to death every time I got in a boot loop and other scary things for a begginer. I agree! Learn from the bottom up even if its just rooting, unlocking, flashing and backing up.

Well it would still be nice to have one. I know how to do it personally, but like the galaxy s3 we had the rooting toolkit and the app to unlock. It is a luxury nice to have. Hopefully omeone will make one

Aint nothing wrong with having a toolkit. As long as ppl check the MD5 they will be fine. I learned to use both ways when i had my thunderbolt and to be honest it is much easier to have the toolkit.Yes should should know how to root / unroot manually. Yes there should be an easy way for those that decide to use the toolkit.Obviosly using both ways you still have ppl that are always asking the same questionie.. Help i bricked my phone or How to do this or that. but guess what thats what makes this forum great. you have options to do it either way.It also makes the person or persons who do the toolkit get thanked!!!! lol well thats all im gonna say about that!

Just because a person chooses an easy method doesn't mean they don't know or can't learn the actual method, and just because s person can follow step by step instructions doesn't mean they actually learned anything.
The first time I rooted an Android device I did it using the command line on my phone, no PC needed.
The second time I used z4root.
we now have a root tool kit... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050297

I can agree to this. My wife's tbolt crapped out on her. It's easier to have a toolkit to quickly get the new device unlocked/rooted so I could restore her backup img on the new phone.
Having never used a toolkit for any phone, I can likely root or restore any phone I have just as fast as the toolkit could for someone. You learn how to do everything manually, and you will learn that in most cases, it's easier to do it that way. Also, the toolkit wouldn't work properly anyway as it would need to be able to execute Odin, select a tar, and then flash it. While you could get an application to do this, it would require other pre-requisites to do so. My opinion is that everyone should just stop being lazy, suck it up, and deal with the methods available, and if you can't do that, then learn to love stock. There is nothing hard about rooting, unlocking, reverting to stock, or anything else that I've seen yet.

read the post...camera is only broke on the s3 using that method.
I'm about to buy this phone. I was just wondering if there have been any updates to it that I have to worry about that may have halted putting custom recovery/roms on it?
Anyone?
Only thing you probably won't be able to do is s off, unlock and root shouldn't be a problem.

Nope... Everything is still pretty easy. Don't think they changed anything with S-OFF, unless I'm mistaken. I found it pretty easily doable (with a good guide in front of you, anyway). Look up Vomer's guide. He makes it easy to follow and includes links to the files you'll need.
I am switching from a S5 to the M8 shortly and am trying to find a guide on how to root this phone. It's very possible I just missed it while looking through the forum or maybe there isn't one at all. Keep in mind that I am a Mac user and have 0 access to a windows machine. Could some link me to a guide if one already exists or if one doesn't could anyone, with the knowledge to do so, make a guide on how to do this.
Thanks guys.
Here is the link to root but you might be out of luck if you can't use a PC. I believe this is only for PC and I think I read that a Mac version won't be worked on but I could be wrong.
Also, there is a video on YouTube that breaks down how to use the toolkit.
