My Atrix is locked and rooted by Pete's Motorola Root Tools(The one click root). I unroot it with the same tool then did OTA to 4.5.141. But the update failed around maybe 20% progress( the screen showed the android and progress bar, then show the yellow exclamation sign and reboot back to 4.5.91). After the phone rebooted, it shows "Upgrade failed".
Can someone tell me what might be causing this? Is there a log I can check for the upgrade?
Thanks!
Do you have any Blur/Moto apps frozen or uninstalled? If so they need to be unfrozen/installed before the update will work. Your phone essentially needs to be completely stock without root for OTA updates to work.
Thanks for the pointer. This might be the problem. I did uninstall some of the blue apps ( just use the built in application manager). How can I restore them?
If you were able to "Uninstall" them from the "Manage Applications" in the Settings Menu then they were just the preinstalled apps and wouldn't matter. When you un-rooted it, did you uninstall Superuser?

The one click rooter uninstalled SuperUser.
I however ran Root Keeper before I unrooted it. Will try tonight if that's the problem. I did see people succuessfully upgrade to 4.5.141 with Root Keeper though.

My phone was rooted using Super One click prior to updating to 4.1.57. I updated my Atrix without unrooting. The update took, but now I'm unable to unroot my phone. No mods were installed. Only Titanium back up. Please help. How do I remove superuser? I tried using Super One Click, but it states "running psneuter."
I had to do a factory reset after updating my rooted phone in order to get all the apps that I had frozen with TI backup. The reset also removed the superuser app icon.
Thanks, but factory reset failed to remove super user for me.
root atrix
to my feel exactly the same with my atrix and not to restore it to values of manufactures have been able to remove the root icon.
Thank you if you find the solution the make me know and I hare the same with you
Hi all,
My AT&T Atrix is running 4.5.91. I unrooted it to update to 4.5.141 OTA (I understood it was risky to do an OTA update while rooted).
After I finished downloading the update, I started installing but during installation, the package icon changed to a warning icon (with no error message) and the phone rebooted on 4.5.91 with a message saying the update failed
I think the package may have been corrupted in the download as it was interrupted. Although, I did try this 3 times (redownloading each time)
Any tips?
Thanks
You must have frozen and/or deleted some Blur apps as well as being rooted. Unless you have all the stock files from the firmware you are updating from, the install will fail.
I have unrooted the phone
However, I did use the "integrate system apps updates into ROM" option on TB.
I did not freeze anything
Will this work:
http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-EN/Atrix+Upgrade/Atrix-Gingerbread-Update
If not, what must I do?
Edit: Oh, and I also have AdFree installed and enabled. Should I revert?

The sd card method will fail for you as well. Undo everything that required root access, including adfree...not sure if it will restore the modified files back to stock though, never used that app.
Exactly what happened to me. Successfully updated using Motorola Software Update
Hi
You have succeeded?
I am stuck for months trying to do this update...
It's absolutely frustrating...
I actually stopped trying. I got a RAZR a few weeks after I started this thread...
I might unlock the BL and install some ROMs to play with the Atrix but basically I don't use it anymore...
Anyway, I think the problem I was having was because I integrated updates into the ROM and I don't think it can be undone
Bootloader Unlocked?
If your bootloader is unlocked the update will most likely not work. Regardless, the link below has some useful information.

I just got an update for Superuser from Google Play, v3.1(42), released today. In the changelog, Temp Unroot and OTA survival options have been added. I think this might be useful for those of us who are rooted when getting the OTA update. I plan on trying it out.
I don't have a third party "root keeper" type application installed, is there any possibility that this is just as good?

Yeah, Superuser has to compete with SuperSu, that's why those new features are in there, SuperSu has them. And yes, OTA survival works better than Voodo Roor Keeper.

I wonder which might be better, voodoo root keeper or this? If there's even a difference.

The OTA survival on SuperSu and Superuser are slightly better than Voodo, as they automate some processes of regaining root, but it's the same concept.

i didnt even bother to look at the change log, i should have, im glad it is built in so now i dont have to use a third party.
Has anyone tested this on their AT&T S3? I'm rooted with stock recovery.

I am actually wondering if this works as well. Would be nice to unroot, get the update and reroot without having to redo everything ie home screen settings etc

I can't speak to other devices, but for my Transformer Infinity and Droid 4, Superuser's OTA Survival did nothing for me, and Voodoo worked perfectly.
if you have superuser in the system\app directory then you cant use the unroot as it needs to be in the \data\app directory for it to work. I tried it with both sueruser and supersu and each would only unroot if the superuser app was in the \data\app directory... i would move it their then reboot and do that... or just use the droid razr utility which will make it all stock.... best way really.
Actually, after searching around more, I think my problem may have been that the means of using the ota survival in superuser is spectacularly un-obvious and un-intuitive and nearly un-documented. I just tested using Voodo's temp unroot and then superuser to restore root and that worked.
For anyone else that finds Superuser's method confusing:
1) Before any update that might un-root your device, check the "ota survival" box in superuser
2) After an update that un-roots your device, open superuser and *uncheck* the "ota survival" box. This will restore your root and, for reasons that flabbergast me, REMOVE the backup, so ...
3) After restoring root, re-check the "ota survival" box
Compare this to Voodoo:
1) Create backup of su when rooted
2) When un-rooted, click "Restore Root"
Repeat just #2 when you get the next OTA
rooting after temp unroot
How do you root again after a temp unroot? unchecking the temp unroot doesnt work.. it does something, but afterwards the temp unroot is still checked. Also a phone restart doesnt help. Anyone else have this issue? (I'm on motorola defy+ with quarx jelly bean cyanogenmod)
temp unroot
No one can explain how to regain root over a SU temp unrooted phone?
Hi, I have a small problem.
Perhaps someone of you can help me. I asked this in the exploit thread as well as in the SuperSU thread but most I think just oversaw it.
I had CF-root on ICS stock before upgrading to JB. Sow since I got JB (4.1.1.), I'm on stock without root.
I tried the new exploit to root my phone.
I used the method to root and it worked but my SuperSU can't get updated or removed. I can just hit deinstall in the play store but it stays installed (like one of Samsungs own apps) and only option I have is to update it.
I did press on update but when I enter the app it still says binary needs to get updated. When I click yes to update it, it says install error. When I click to remove SuperSU in the app itself nothing happens.
SuperSU is at v0.99
What should I do? I assume I have to get rid of CMW and SuperSU from the old ICS root, but how without reflashing everything?
EDIT: I can't enable the exploit fixes either, when I click one of the checkboxes the SuperSU pop-up just flashes for a split second and is gone again, leaving the checkboxes unchecked.
Thanks in advance!
Hi,
I bought a Nexus 5 on amazon, and when it came in, it went through the setup process as if it were a brand new phone. However, as soon as it got to the home page, i noticed that SuperSU was installed, and it was in the app drawer. I did not want a rooted phone, so i installed root checker to see if the phone was rooted. Root checker said it was not rooted, so i thought i was safe to uninstall superSU. But when I launch superSU, it gives me a popup that says that there is no supersu binary installed or something, and i can't access the app further than that. Is there any way to uninstall it otherwise? I also went to the play store to uninstall it but it just says that it will uninstall all updates. Also, if i install marshmallow, will that fix the problem? i heard that the OTA update for M will remove root, supersu, etc.
thanks

yes, it is listed there, and when i click on it, it gives me options to force stop it, uninstall updates, or disable it. But i heard that if i try to install OTA updates on the phone, it will stop halfway cause the updates now check for stuff like supersu

If there is no option to uninstall, it is on the system partition, you will need to root to remove it, or better reinstall stock firmware.
the devices was rooted at some time and it was not unrooted correctly, I would not allow the device to update ota, because you just do not know if stock rom is complete.

yes, that is possible.

I have decided to give back the phone, I really don't want that kinda risky device on me for the next 2 years... however, will i be able to factory reset it before i send it back? or will the phone mess up? (when i initially got the phone, i THINK it was factory reset because i had to go through the default android setup process) i just don't want the next owner to gain any of my information or anything even if i delete everything i have on it so far and disconnect my google account

Yes, that is probably safest option

factory reset should be safe.
flashing firmware, is what the seller should have done, before shipping
