[Q] New Motorola Atrix 4G - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm receiving my new Atrix in the next few days, and had a few questions after the latest 4.3.6 OTA update saga.
Should I update to 4.3.4 and then unlock my bootloader and root the device? Can this be done on 4.3.6 easily, and if so, will being on 4.3.6 stock affect my ability to load 4.3.4 based custom ROMs?
What is the best way to unlock the bootloader these days? I see there are a few automated tools (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871) but do these work on all (international) phone versions? I'm unsure what region my phone will be (except that it's a MB860) until I get it.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Should be getting the phone today, any ideas?

get your phone first. check out its specs.
then proceed once you know where you're starting from.
no use speculating in advance. a waste of time.

Got it - it's a ME860. The place I ordered it advertised it as a MB860 - is there a big difference here?

..on further inspection, the label in the battery compartment also says MB860, as does all over documentation with the phone. It is just when I look at the model in phone settings that it says ME860

White vs. Brushed back, better chance to find unlocked w/ white?

I assume the difference between the two backs is purely cosmetic. Seems the white ones were made first? Would there be a better chance of finding a white back unlocked vs a brushed one?
Thanks
I have the Grey one that I just bought 2 days ago from Staples. 16 GB and it is unlocked.
locked or unlocked doesnt really matter, since you can flash and kernel ect with locked bootloader tab
what else do you need ?!
Hello,
Just a question, ... how do you know if Gtab 10.1 is lock or unlock ?
Thank you for your reply.

When booting up the screen shows Galaxy Tab 10.1 and at the very bottom center of the screen there's an image of an unlocked lock. If the bootloader IS locked you will not see any lock when booting.
In my experiences, the 16gb gray tab I got first from Best Buy had a locked bootloader. An identical model of the same color i bought on eBay WAS unlocked. I bought the one from Best Buy only because i was too impatient to wait on the eBay one to come in the mail. I never planned on keeping both since i got the one on eBay $50 cheaper. And when i discovered the unlocked bootloader I was even happier. So the one from Best Buy went back the next day after i flashed my CWM backup from it to the other one.
Do we need to unlock the bootloader to run roms
I got both white 32GB and black 16GB from BestBuy and they are both unlocked.
I understand that both can be rooted and CWM can be used and they will work the same, but of course I would love to get one that is unlocked. Why? I have no real reason, just because.
Do I want to go through the hassle of returning it? Probably not, but I have 12 more days to decide and to see if anything is actually wrong with it. Like I said in a previous thread, my luck I would return a perfect one that is locked for a not so perfect locked or if I am lucky an unlocked one that has problems.
My 16gb silver back is from Staples and its locked, man I wish they pulled a different box for me!

No, you just root (takes 2min) and load a ROM with Rom Manager for example.

basically a ROM contains the OS of a device, it may be more or less modified...

You have to get lucky to get an unlocked tab. So maybe try cregs list or something were they know their tab is unlocked if u want 1 that bad. Otherwise just root ur locked tab.
so once it is rooted, it is unlocked? i rooted mine the minute i got home.
What is the difference this is my first android tablet and you can flash even if its locked. I found mibe is unlocked and its brushed

Nope, totally different things. Rooted means you (and programs you permit) can run as the "superuser" (aka "su") in unix-speak, allowing you access to certain otherwise unavailable system functions such as the ability to mount the system folders on your device and make changes to them.

The bootloader is the code that runs when your device is first powered, even before it runs the normal OS, recovery, or anything else. It's like the BIOS on a PC. The bootloader can also apply update files to the system. This can include custom ROMs and system updates. If the bootloader is locked, however, this function is unavailable to the user.
Fortunately for you folks with locked bootloaders, there are other ways to flash our Tabs, such as ODIN and nvflash. They essentially do the same thing, i.e., allow you apply updates to your system including custom ROMs. So there's probably no big difference for owners of locked devices as long as the updates and ROMs they want to use are made available in the appropriate format by the devs.
I feel like my brushed metallic tab is heavier than the white one I had? Am I insane or anyone else think this?
Basically I bought one from BB because I was too impatient to wait a week until I ordered one off amazon with giftcards for ALOT cheaper.
after I returned the white tab (with extreme ease actually, no questions asked about the used tab) and opened the brushed metallic, I SWEAR and even now holding it that it is heavier.
Im probably crazy, because Im sure it has to be made of the same materials.
Also both my white and brushed tabs were both locked.

I had both a white and a metal Tab at the same time. They weigh the same.
Perhaps your metal Tab has more GBs? Greater number of installed programs? More music loaded? These would all cause it to be heavier, of course.

[Q] Interesting Photon Perk

Sorry if this has already been covered, but the only thread I could find on point was in the archive.
I recently bought a Photon for Sprint on ebay with the idea of reselling it. The phone was running 2.35 and I used Photon-torpedo to root it, which worked just fine. Today, on a whim, I popped my sim chip from my AT&T Atrix 4g into it, to see if it would work. It did. And, with a little bit of tweaking of the settings, I was able to get 4g data to run. (I set Network Mode to "Automatic", and enabled the checkbox to Allow GSM was all). Then, to take it further, I was able to start Mobile Hotspot, which I'd had to "disable" the device check on line 118 in my Atrix to get to do the same thing.
So, my question is a little noobish: Is my Photon carrier unlocked somehow, perhaps by Photon-Torpedo? Am I going to get slammed by AT&T for some sort of bizarre roaming charge? Anyone know why this worked?
nice, what baseband does it have and does it say unlock when you first boot up phone?
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk 2
I don't think its unlocked as it doesn't say unlocked when it boots up and behaves like it still thinks its a Sprint phone. Google Play store also treats it as a Sprint phone. The baseband is n_01.29.08_GSM

you say it works just fine on the AT&T network? interesting. are you outside of the US? that's the only way it would work out of the box like that. i would like to hear more about this!
No, I am not outside the US. I am in Seattle, and we have nost of the big carriers here, (Sprint, Verizon, AT&T), so it is as much a surprise to me as to you.
I've been using this phone for about 3 days now on AT&T, and it's been working as well as my Atrix 4g by all appearances.
If there's any info I can provide let me know. I'd love to figure this out.

i'm 2 hours away from you haha. small world. well your baseband is very unusual! so i think you may have a special phone on your hands that some devs would love to have. i do have a couple questions. where did the phone come from? someone inside the US? if it came from another non-US carrier it would make sense. as a japanese version known as KDDI has the same phone but unlocked GSM for the US. perhaps you can pull me the build.prop file from the system folder and post on here as a zip or text file. (otherwise xda won't allow the upload) then we can see just a little more info on the device and what carrier it might have come from originally.
you're baseband is unique. photons latest baseband is n_01.28.07r. previous ones have been N_01.28.0Xs.fk, X=random character
This phone was a eBay purchase and sent from Fort Lauderdale Florida. It was listed as a Sprint phone, and the only information that was in the ebay listing was that she had changed carriers after having it for 6 months and had to get another phone. I will post the build prop late tonight when I have more time.

you my friend have one very unique photon. you have a unique baseband and build of the OS. i have never seen either of them. i posted in another forum asking others about this. you might have the missing key people have been looking for in terms of GSM unlocking. i wanna know who had this phone and if maybe it's a leaked OS on the phone or something else that's going on? do you know if the CDMA side of the phone works at all? even just making a call whether a line is connected or not?

i wouldn't mind getting a nandroid backup of this if you could possibly do that? using bootstrap, a real recovery, or even this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samcripp.romff (i think this would do the job if you don't have bootstrap or a real custom recovery)
i would thank you a lot for it! you could upload it to dropbox or something if that's possible?
Okay. Let me research how to do a nandroid backup. As soon as I have it figured out, I will post it.

you can use bootstrap here,
http://files.acsyndicate.net/pub/users/Steve/MOTODX2_Bootstrap_signed.apk
or you can use the one listed in the previous post. or you can unlock and install a custom recovery. however i'd be careful with unlocking because flashing the wrong thing can put your phone back to a standard photon with locked GSM making it somewhat unusable for GSM again. so i wouldn't recommend an unlock at this time.
top tip: don't flash an SBF file whatever you do!
installing and using bootstrap:
Installation:
Download the recovery file
Mount your device to USB
Put the .apk on your device
Unplug your device
Navigate to the file explorer, install “Bootstrap_signed.apk”
When the installation completes, run the application
Click “Install Recovery”
Accept the Superuser request
Click “Install Recovery” again for good measure
After success, plug your Photon 4G into the wall adapter
Verify that your phone is charging from the wall
Press “Recovery Mode”
Your device will now slowly reboot into Tenfar’s CWM Recovery
*note: you do need to have your phone plugged in to get into "recovery" mode.
then do a backup

Good News! I have uploaded a backup of the Magical Photon to Dropbox that was taken using the link you provided above. I thought it was better to take that route rather than risk making a stupid mistake while unlocking the bootloader or when flashing the device. Why take chances when you don't have to? PM me with an email address so I can invite you to share the folder. And let me know if you need anything else.

The last I heard about that was in halfevildruids thread. Na7q posted a CWM flashable zip based on the magical photon. You can find the post here
As far as I know, this hasn't worked for any other phone, (the Magical Photon seems to be completely unique). I think halfevildruid also opined that there could be a binary switch in the magical photon that might be found, but as far as I know nobody is working on it.
What would be really nice to have is the Magical Photon's radio. Unfortunately, its not that easy to get. The plan is to extract it when a new OTA update comes out. But unless a new method surfaces to extract the radio, we'll have to wait for that.
In the meantime, I'm keeping the Magical Photon as close to "pure to stock" as I can to give the devs here the best material to work with if it's ever needed.
Hope that answers your questions.

If you guys get me the stock locked and the magical one's nv dump I will start going through it. I have the 2.3.5 leak and kddi dumps again. If its in the nvm I will find it if I can get hold of that phone. If not I can scan for differences between the two nvf's. I am busy opening a wireless repair shop to open in 2 weeks so I am not doing a lot until that is open.

or
trade+$ (if JohnH4 will go for it) and you walk me through the nv dump (until we get 2.3.5 unlock this will kill both my atrix and photon deving til that time)
I'll match your 100 or offer up a shiny white 1 month new white HTC vivid straight across if john is interested in an at&t phone. No ones got a chance of getting their paws on my one x though.

Which sbf file I need for my Atrix ?

So I need to send my Atrix back to Motorola and need to flash a .sbf file in order to relock it (running CM7 for now).
I've read tutorials so I'm not concerned about the procedure but more about which .sbf file I need. My Atrix was bought from ibood.de so it's probably coming from Belgium or The Nertherlands.
Any idea of the version that is used ?

Do they always lock it ? Don't you think it has to do with the fact that you send it unlocked ?
Sometimes they don't permalock it, but most of the time they do. Just assume it is going to get locked.
That's super ****ty. And there's nothing that can be done to unlock it ?
I mean, I don't even think that is legal, they just can't change my product if they want it. It's mine now and I want them to fix it not to change it.
Not only do they cancel ICS but they would now stuck me with stock rom !

You can blame all the media corps and their desire to control media consumption for that. The primary reason for locked bootloaders has a lot to do with companies and groups like Netflix, the cable industry, MPAA/RIAA, etc. not being willing to allow their services if certain protectionist measures aren't put in place.
As for locking it and it being legal? They can simply give you a replacement and it be locked and claim it was cheaper to swap it than fix it. What's worse is that there is a growing debate over who owns devices once purchased and devices purchased on subsidy could be used as being considered owned by the carrier or manufacturer and only 'leased' to the customer. Now that's what I'd call pretty s****y because if they get away with that then we'd own nothing which is ideal for any company on the ownership side of the deal.
And sorry for being a little off topic but it's definitely something that will only get worse before it gets better.

That may be true for the US but I'm European (so is my Atrix) where Netflix and cables companies don't have any kind of power on that level (for now) + the UE tend to make laws to prevent those situations.
So can I hope that lock issue is US-only ? Did it happen to non-US users ?

This is probably correct, if they don't have a system in place that auto rejects ConsumerCellular/Wind IMEI numbers.
We won't really know for sure until there is an OTA.
I haven't checked today, but Huawei pulled the update. Couple quirks that they need to iron out.
Other apps not staying default, one I've had plus it appears to be eating the battery a bit more, but,
with the 4000 mAH battery, it's no big deal.

Yep, saw that on the Huawei site about a day or two after they released it. Mine should be in their system, but I don't think the update will be coming soon.
I'm starting to get the feeling, they released whatever they had, on the 30th, to satisfy their "in the first half of 2015" pledge, and will sort out the bugs later.
If a consumer is the type that wants cutting edge updates, go with an iphone or Nexus. Otherwise, it's up to the carriers (if ever) to release it or the device maker, if purchasing an unlocked non carrier branded device. The couple quirks on 5.1 aren't that big of a deal, it's stable otherwise.
If it hadn't been for Huawei releasing an easy way to go back to 4.3, I wouldn't have updated. I don't ever turn my device off, so the launcher not sticking, along with the 3rd party SMS program isn't that annoying. It appears it's sucking just a bit more juice, but, with that 4,000mAH battery, it's no big deal, even running in "normal" mode.

Would you buy an unrootable phone?

I lost my v20 (T-Mobile rooted) about a month ago, so i went ahead and purchased another v20 hoping I could root it again but got the latest firmware which is locked up just like G6. I returned it.
So I'm just curious. What percentage of you guys would buy an unrootable phone and what percentage would not.

I don't find root really all that necessary anymore and haven't bothered since I've had the V20. So not worried about it at the moment with the V30.
like a few around here I'm getting the V30 (most likely) for the hardware, and I'll need root for V4A. so yeah, no root, no purchase. period. I'll keep my htc10 or something.
I won't buy a phone I don't own, and that means root. From Day 1.
Root for me is mandatory I have never owned a phone I couldn't root or that had a locked boot-loader.
I want a V30, but nope, gotta wait till the US998 AND a full bootloader unlock is released.
These phones are far too expensive, for me to NOT to have full control.
If I want a locked device, at $800, I'll buy a iPhone 8+ with better software, battery life, processor, ram management etc.
Google and Qualcomm are crazy with this new locked down policy

Why do you (not you specifically but the collective that seems to be here at XDA) all whine about cellphone cameras not turning out photos you like when you should all be rooting your phones and writing new noise reduction and sharpening algorithms instead of complaining about something you all clearly don't understand properly?
I come here to get general information on phones and new program ports. My contribution back is to maybe try to explain what the heck is going on with cellphones' cameras since for a board all high and mighty on getting the most of their phones but don't seem to understand the underpinnings of something they all want to complain about and probably don't have the ability to change if they really wanted to. Yes, I understand rooting, how it's done and why it's done. I've been with Android since the G1 days. At some point though, it has gotten to the point where I don't really see a need for myself to root my device anymore. My V20 worked. My V30 so far seems to work.

Well it's a thread about v30 which I have been following for a while. The question was asked if we care for rooting or not which means he was expecting answers from both sides, and being on xda doesn't require love for rooting. So these are my reasons to be here cheers

Not on the carrier version.
Wtf that's messed up
Couldn't care less
Just bought the Verizon V30. My plan is to wait until the unlocked version is released and the developers have a chance to get the bootloader unlocked, create custom ROMS, etc., and then (maybe) sell the V30 and get an unlocked version.
This is my first unrooted phone since my first HTC. The only thing that I really miss is the ability to create nandroid backups. I thought that I would miss the ad blocker more than I do, but since most of my apps are ad free it hasn't been that big of a deal.
I say "maybe" to getting an unlocked phone is that I don't want to give up WiFi calling, and so far having an unrooted phone is nowhere near as frustrating as I thought it would be. I also thought that having a silver phone instead of a black phone would be annoying, but it actually looks great.

Agree 100%, everyone Android I have owned has been rooted, and running a custom ROM. I have had a few iPhone's over the years and they were stock not JB, and it's actually not a bad phone stock, with the Ad Blocking apps, etc... But iOS is too locked down for me.
After using a non-rooted phone for a year, my answer is a strong HELL-NO! I will never own an unrooted phone again. I plan to get a V30, but I will wait until the bootloader is unlocked and I can root it with Magisk. Locked bootloaders are for iOS users.
