[Q] Unbeatable boot loop? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I recently received my fresh NT from the ebay sale, and yesterday had it running CM7, with CWM installed internally. Everything was fine with the world.
Today, I wake up and find it boot looping constantly.
- When plugged into USB, it boot loops constantly. As soon as the N screen disappears, it restarts. I can't even get it to turn off.
- When disconnected from USB, I can't even get it to turn on. Period.
- When disconnected from USB when the N screen is showing, it instantly shuts off.
- 8 Reboot trick doesn't work, booting onto a CWM or stock-flashing SDCard doesn't work, acclaim doesn't work.
Almost sounds like a dead battery, considering the instant shut-off when unplugged, but it can't charge because it's constantly trying to turn on. Any advice?

Leave it on the charger and don't touch it for about half an hour.

Unfortunately, it's degraded to the point that it won't even turn on -- plugged in or not. I'm going to go ahead and pass it off as a hardware failure and see if I can get an exchange.

mine is doing this , i didnt charge it last night , when i woke up it went to cynoboot showed 12 percent batt and now its looping just like what you said yours was , what is the end result ?
i've already taken the back off i have access to the batt connector im thinking about maybe rigging up a trickle charger to that directly also i dont have the BN charge cable im using a micro usb and its worked well so far, i did order a BN cable it should be home by the time i get home though , im guessing i need to find an alternative way to recharge this battery
id like to know if you got an exchange ? or if you still have the tablet ? im going to try a few other things too but if you still have yours and i figure it out ill pm it to you

solution
dude sorry to dump this on you years after wards , crack it open , flip it over to its back flip up the sd card cover take out the torx 5 screws , use a small flat head screw driver pop out the back tabs once its open , disconnect the battery and the other cable up top , i left em disconnected and tapped them with my volt meter , i saw a capp drain flat on the outside red and outside black lines, then after a few minuets reconnect the two cables , plug it into your power and leave it for 2 hours your now at screen of death and just need to charge the battery,
manually forced the device to reset , it keep running in circles and would never charge , just disconnect the batt man ...
mines on and at 20 % batt and charging ...
later

I have the same problem. Would letting it drained completely and recharge work? I don't have the right tiny screw driver for it. :crying:
I think the battery is still good. For me, It's able to get into CWM and install the latest cm-10.2-20130811-UNOFFICIAL-acclaim.zip. Just, when reboot, it goes into the endless booting "N" loop.
Thanks.

Had almost the same problem as you. Bought a Nook Color off eBay. Battery was discharged to 0%. I didn't have the original Nook Color charger cable so I thought I was fscked. I had a few microUSB chargers lying around. I used an old Motorola flip-phone charger to charge it back to life.
Get ANY microUSB charger, like for an old cellphone, or buy one (they're cheap off the streets). Plug it in and let it charge overnight. Do NOT under any circumstances press the power button or you'll have to restart the charging process. The next morning my Nook Color booted up (although it had only 18% charge) and everything was fine (poor seller sold it on eBay for parts, I got it for $28 in total LOL, but I knew it was fine).

Charging Problems after 2003SE rom upgrade

I went away for xmass, and the last thing I did before leaving (this is stupid i know) was to upgrade my XDAII to 2003SE 2.02 rom.
I brought only my USB charge cable because i didnt want to carry too much.
Now, when I plugged it in to charge on my PC it said charging and the light came on as usual. However, it seems it wasnt charging. I left it overnight expecting to have a charged unit, only to find it completely dead the next day.
Now, when I plug it in, the charge light comes on RED for about 2 minutes, then the unit comes on from a hard reset and shows both charge levels at ZERO.
It stays on for about 10 minutes pretending to charge, but only the backup battery charges, the main one doesnt charge at all. Then it goes off totally and the light goes red again.
If I turn the unit off while it goes red straigh away and wont come back on.
After a few minutes it comes back on and pretends to charge again. The Backup battery reached "100 %" but the main battery will not charge. its still at 0% and wont charge.
Ive connected it to a 5v2amp psu as it requires but this was via a powered usb charger so using the same lead, not the official cradle.
Im worried there is something wrong but dont have access to the cradle.
Has anyone else ever had experiance of a total discharge state on an XDAII ?
UPDATE
I travelled 50 miles today to get to the nearest charge cradle for an XDA2, put my battery in and it charged fine. I put it back in the XDA and it worked. However, when I got home I plugged it into the USB charge lead, and it came on and said charging again, with the yellow light and all seemed well. I left if for a bit and the battery was then dead again with no charge and back to showing the red light. it wont come on at all now.
This is the same lead i used previously and the only change is the 2003SE rom, has anyone else had a problem charging after doing this rom upgrade? Can I revert back to 172 ? how? help please.
Please help. IM screwed unless I can find a solution, has anyone got any idea?
Dude, I have the same problem on my 1.72 version. I have (of course) dropped by xda2 several times on the floor, but it works charging from the cradle (which again has a adapter connected to it) but not from my brand new USB sync+Charge cable. I have also tried another cable and even on a different PC. Only thing that happens, is that it says it is charging, but nooooo... it's all flat after a little while. It's as if the cable uses my XDA power to change the PC instead of the other way around
It's funny. So now I have to drag that big-ass charger along with me to work every day instead of that neat little USB cable.
Life is unfair!
As for your problems, I can only say that you're not alone.
Hi, thanks for the reply.
I havent ever dropped mine, ive taken good care of it, so I dont think that is the cause. It does sound like the same issue however, I dont have my cradle here to test it though, just a usb sync+charge cable.
Does it work with the charge adaptor and psu alone? I mean the little thing that goes on the end of the mains psu to connect directly to the XDA without the cradle. How about on the cradle without the PSU plugged in?
I think this may be a hardware fault that needs repair, so its off back to o2 for mine if it is, you may find they would repair yours too.
Anyone else got an idea?

With my charger alone, it charges perfectly. In the Cradle with the charger connected, it works too. I havn't tried to use the cradle alone using only the USB cable to the PC.
I think I might bring it to the repair-dudes when it's so trashed that it is not working at all Until then, i will keep on using it.
I have exactly the same problem. i am not sure if it was because of the upgrade, but this is what happened to me, I upgraded to 1.72wwe from the factory 1.66wwe and it was working fine when I noticed that sometimes when it was charging after pulling out the plug, the unit will display 0% charge from the external battery and then after plugging it again the power is at 100%, It happened twice and was ok again, I presumed it was just a glitch from the system and promptly dismissed it as such. After a week, it was hardresetting everytime i got it out of the plug. I brought it to the service center and they replaced the battery (it was under warranty) It was working fine then I upgraded to 2003se the unit was ok for about 3 days then i noticed that the unit was loosing charge and hardresetting everytime. I brought it to the service center again and they said they replaced the motherboard this time and was back to 1.66wwe. So far its ok and working fine.

[Q] Battery problem Venue

Hi to all
Hope that somebody will be able to help me. The battery on my Venue was completely drained last night during a phone call and the phone shut down. I connected the charger, waited for 30 minutes and tried switching it on, but all I got was the info on the screen is a pic of battery with 0% in it. I tried charging it overnight, connecting it to a computer, but nothing happened, each time I try to switch it on, I get that info (battery 0%).
The battery was ok, I was using it for two whole days before it drained so much that it shut down. I have no custom ROM installed, everything is completely from the factory. I tried taking the battery out, SIM card out, SD card out, no luck. Never had my battery completely drained before, so I can't say if this would happen before. Battery worked perfectly until now.
Found an info that it might be due to the battery protection circuit...? Unfortunately, can not take it/send it to Dell as I bought it in US, and I'm in Europe now. Any idea of what I could do? I would really appreciate it...
Thanx!
Ok, here I am, not to jinx it, but I think I resolved it. I tried switching on the phone again, but with no success. Then I tried entering the setup menu (or whatever it's called) by pressing 'volume down' key and on/off switch, in which I succeeded and saw the setup screen. I DID NOT TOUCH OR CHANGED ANYTHING, just left it like that, connected to the wall outlet charger for a few minutes. After the screen shut down on itself, I took out the battery (after unplugging it from the wall outlet) and put it back after a couple of minutes. Then I plugged the phone in the USB slot of my computer and left it like that for 15 minutes. I tried switching it on again and it worked - the battery was on 3% and the status was 'charging'. Now it's on 51% and 'charging'.
I hope that is the end of the problem, I will never let the battery drain out completely again. Just to be on the safe side, I ordered another battery from dell.com.
Hope this helps someone.
hi you, my V had that problem too, i shutdown phone, connect the adapter, icon battery show on the screen and wait 15 minutes then hold on power button, everything will be ok
i also had a problem charging with the wall adapter when i switched to custom rom (cm7) for 2 days but after 2 days it started charging from the wall adapter..
Thanks a lot people here
This helped me a lot
My dell was 0% when it switiched off automatically
I connected to wall charger in the night
Till morning it was 0%
I read above
But all I did was connected it to USB slot in PC
and left for 10 mins
Then started it
And it went on
No such problem has arised for me till now.
Actually im using samsung galaxy y's wall charger! As i had that in my room, and both uses same charger, i didnt change it and kept dell charger in the box only!
Though using data cable of dell for pc
Wall charger takes 2hrs max to charge the venue fully.

[Q] ARGH! Dead again. Or not?

Bought a Flyer on the Buy.com $199 deal a while back:
First one arrived DOA and too deeply discharged to take a charge. I called Buy.com and they replaced it for free (good service). Strike one.
Second one arrived and worked great for months. I rooted it, S-OFF and upgraded to last Honeycomb OTA. It was awesome until one morning I came down to find it boot-looping for no reason. I tried everything to get it back up and in the end it was declared dead by SquareTrade. They took it and swapped the mainboard (different device serial number). Strike two.
The third one (with new mainboard) worked until last night (you know, just as ICS is coming available). I found it powered off and plugged into the wall-wart charger. I pressed the power button and it booted up all the way to Android, where it declared itself out of power (1%) and shut off promptly. I tried a different charger (wall-wart to USB power) and it blew out that charger (now dead) and got really warm on the power port. Tried a PC and still couldn't charge. Got the "magic smoke / hot electronics" smell from the area around the charge/USB port. I quickly unplugged the USB cable (quite warm) and walked away disgusted. Strike three.
So. just now, I managed to get it booted again into recovery and did a complete factory wipe, format cache, dalvik, wipe battery stats. To my great surprise it finished this before auto-shutdown due to flat battery. :fingers-crossed: Selected Power Off. After that it would never respond to the power button at all... so I figured I had struck out.
Well, for giggles I plugged the HTC wallwart charger back in (even though last night it never registered as charging)... the power button went to blinking red (from just-plain-off). I let it sit for a couple minutes like that, then powered it on and SURPRISE, it made it through the first-boot setup and into Settings/About Tablet/Battery where it shows it is charging AC.
This thing MAY BE alive! :good:
Has anyone else ever seen something like this?
Do you think the Wipe Battery Stats is what let it start charging again?
Should I follow up with SquareTrade and try to get this replaced anyway?
Not normal behaviur - i would go replace it as i would be always nervous looking at it.
Update!
Okay more data for the fodder.
I let it charge completely and the unplugged it to check if the GPS was working. After a short time to lock-on (yeah!) I took it back to my PC to see if I could connect to mount the SD card. The PC would NOT recognize the Flyer at all... nor would the charge light come on.
I then tried plugging in the HTC wall wart and it STILL wouldn't switch to charging. This is odd. The plug (right at the USB cable end/port) gets really warm.
I reboot to recovery and clear battery stats and then back into ROM and guess what? It's charging again.
I think the USB port or something is really messed up. I just wonder why Wiping Battery Stats fixes things.
Anyone?
Had this exact problem. The charging pins got pushed back out of place for the tablet/charger to make a stable connection. You have to openthe flyer then press the charging chip back in the charger port until its firmly in its place. It's realy simple if you find how to take the flyer apart. You'll need a torx screw size 6.
Edit do it at your own risk. If you follow through take your time

Mine is doing the same thing. It's staying at only 2%. I'd try to set it to factory settings but way too risky with the battery that low. Let it charge overnight and everything. Going to play around with rebooting it a few times or charging it while it's totally off. The light on the power supply is green and working fine. The LED on the tablet is solid red.
EDIT: After many attempts and trying to reset it, trying to boot up while holding down the volume down button and plugging it and unplugging it from the charger while booting, nothing seems to work. It refuses to boot up at all. LED on tablet will flash red three times when I hit the reset button when it's unplugged. Light is solid red while plugged into charger and will flash three times red when I try to reset it while it's plugged in. Going to contact Sony tomorrow for warranty support if I can't get my problem solved here. Also I was not in possession of this tablet for the past few weeks, I had given it to a friend who was trying to sell it for me and he said the tablet wouldn't charge past 12% for a long time. So it looks like the problem has been getting worse over time and now the tablet seems to be pretty much dead. I had only used the thing for like 3 days too.
---------- Post added at 11:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:54 PM ----------
After about 20 minutes with technical support chat just now they recommended to send it in for servicing. I'm going to call tomorrow for more information but I'd rather not send it in. I'm down in Chile right now trying to sell this thing. I had a friend bring it down for me and I don't really have room to bring it back just to get serviced and then have to sell a might-still-be-broken tablet back home in the USA. If anyone has any tips for getting this thing to get back to normal please help out!
Oh, the chat tech suggested unplugging the device and then holding down the power button for 30-45 seconds then plugging it back in for about 2 minutes and then try turning it on. It didn't work for me but give it a shot!
After letting it sit overnight I tried turning it on again and voila! It booted! At 2% battery still. Been trying to charge it for over an hour now and still not up to 3%. Situation seems pretty bleak. No suggestions from anyone? I'll be returning to the States in a week, I hope that someone has an idea of what to do by then.

It sounds like either the charger or the tablet's battery is defective. If you have access to a voltmeter, test the charger to see if it is outputting 10.5 VDC. As shown by the diagram on the bottom of the charger, the two center pins of the plug are used for charging the tablet, so connect a voltmeter to those two pins. The pin closest to the cable is the negative (or DC common) pin.
If the voltmeter indicates the charger is outputting approximately 10.5 VDC, then it is likely the charger is good and the tablet's battery is defective. If this is the case, the tablet will need to be sent to Sony for repair.
If the voltmeter indicates a voltage significantly lower than 10.5 VDC or no voltage at all, then the charger is defective. If this is the case, you will need to get a replacement charger, hopefully for free from Sony if the charger is still under warranty.
Having similar issue
I am having the same issue, sort of. I got my tablet the 08/08. As soon as I got it I updated to ICS, so I can't really say for sure if the update is to blame as I didn't use it much before the update. At first I got flickering on occasion on the screen. Like some random app, that I was not currently on, came to the front then disappeared again. Right now it is the 10th, at 1:32am and yesterday at around 4pm I had turned it off to go to the gym. I come back and it is not turning on. I set it on the dock and the green led turns on, and I manage to power it up. The screen though starts showing random messed up images like when you get bad reception on tv. I know the logo and power on clip it shows and I can see those colors but all warped. Then it disappeared and it showed the password screen fine and the screen was ok from then on. I lifted it off the port and it turned back off. I put it back on the dock and turned it again, showed the same weird images. When it was up fine, I went to battery settings and it showed the battery at 100% but where it says how much time I had left, it has 16secs. The dock and charger where fine since I got them. But I will check the volts.

[Q] Samsung galaxy s 2 wont turn on/wont charge

Hi there. I promised my girlfriend to make her Samsung Galaxy S2 work again. The thing is, suddenly it won't charge. After trying several different chargers did I bought a new battery. But it didn't work either. Then I bought a new USB charging port and replaced it yesterday. After I plugged in the Charger, the screen shows the charging batteri screen for a couple of seconds and the went black. Then there was no power at all. I tried the other battery, I tried to make sure everything was as it should be inside on the motherboard.
Please help me..
I tried to make a hard reset but it didn't start op of course because the battery has no juice. I tried to unplug the battery for 10 seconds, then I plugged the charger in and afterwards the battery, but still no sign of power.

Hm... you should always be able to start the phone via charger, otherwise something is severly broken.
My advice: Get your girlfriend a new phone or rather take her out for a nice dinner!
It's cheaper and you'll have a great time, hopefully.
PS Get the money back for USB charging port and battery. Women are a really terrible influence on men.......

Hi, i am having similar situation, but i would like to be sure, its definitelly dead. What's different in my case, i was using CM 11 M8 and updated to M9 the day it was released, no problem with booting, just to the moment, when battery dropped to 0% and phone turned off. When i plugged it in, i was there - nothing, black screen, no access do download or CMW mode, tried other battery but no luck.
I just dont understand what has happened, that simple update can kill the phone or what?
