Galaxy Note RAM only 768mb? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

So... I have been struggling to get rid of home screen lag on this device. I am now down to about 5 Widgets and only 2 home screens populated and I still have to consistently wait for the home screen to populate. Sometimes it takes 6-7 seconds, which Is really annoying. Anyway I downloaded memory booster to keep the ram cleaned up, and it indicates that I only have 768mb, not the advertised 1gb. On my xyboard it indicates the correct amount... did I get a bad device or has anyone else noticed this too? In my experience 768 just isn't enough to get a snappy experience in ics so I am pretty worried about this.

I think we may only have 768MB but I cannot find any proof of it, and no one else has been able to provide any proof...

The Samsung Captivate only has 384MB of real system RAM. NOT the 512MB it was said to have.

.....and the Infuse had 452 Avail......

My unlocked note has 800mb free while my att note has 768mb free..not to mention my unlocked note gets way better battery life and doesn't lag. I wanted to stay with the att version but too many issues. Unlike my skyrocket which was flawless. Maybe att needs to push out an update for the note to smooth it out.

That's a big let down... great that att took an awesome device and completely gimped it. Sigh.

Well it seems that the note does have 1gb of ram but 300mb of that is inactive?? How do we activate it!!!! lol If you download and install quadrant and look at the information tab all the way at the bottom it has ram information and this is what it says. if it really is inactive im not happy because we need all the ram we can get, i sure it would help out with the lag.

I think you need to hard reset your device. I am using the stock launcher and have no lag whatsoever. Yes it is 768mb but that's enough. I froze all my non needed apps BTW.

The missing ram is used by the system core.u can fix the lag by using a cpu app and set min speed to 500mhz at boot.

256K is used as video ram and system stuffs. All smat phones are using a portion of the ram for system. Galaxy S has 512K ram but only 377K is used for apps.

I think odds are that 256mb is being used by the gpu. There is no such thing as the kernal 'hiding' ram. Unfortunate thought that the gpu doesnt have its own discrete memory.
I have a sensation with the revolution HD rom. In gingerbread it was absolutely the fastest GUI I have ever used on an android device. In ICS, though, its slower. 768mb of ram just isnt enough to take advantage of android. Again, sigh.

I, also, have frozen more apps than I have seen anyone else post yet. Still consistently sitting at about 560-600mb used.

It does have 1gb of RAM but the OS uses the other 200-something. Even my skyrocket and hercules had the same amount. if you use CM then it frees up some more space. Also, how is 700mb+ ram not enough? o-o I've NEVER seen mine go over 550 used out of the total available, no matter how many apps I'm running. I also read that in Android/Linux, the ram that isn't used is useless so the more ram it uses the better (I may be wrong on that?)

Not to jack this thread; but really where is the proof?! Just because someone says it does, does not mean it does... I do not know if it does or does not have 1GB of RAM but I think we all want to know...
Here is some proof that the Samsung Captivate really only has 384MB of traditional RAM...
http://sean-the-electrofreak.blogspot.com/2010/12/mystery-solved-how-samsung-pulls-off.html
I have been looking for something like this regarding the Note...

According to what I have read... the way linux/android uses memory is nothing like windows... as long as there is enough to run the program... everything is fine... not like in windows where things run better with more memory free...
My guess on your lag is that you have something in the background eating up cpu cycles...
Maybe watchdog might give you some more information?

This guy here is correct. In android the more RAM won't speed up performance of the OS. Android is not designed like windows. Killing apps will increase battery life, but not performance.
The note DOES have 1gb or ram. A portion of it is inactive UNTIL the point you use up all your available 732mb of RAM (which is no easy task considering how the OS closes inactive apps in exchange for another). This is probably done so that the OS is not wasting hardware resources for no reason.
So in all, RAM itself is not the reason your phone has performance issues. Their may be a particular app causing a cpu problem. I would also consider maybe using a higher clock speed maybe? Although I have not done so myself and my note runs great.

The memory you're talking about here is called RAM, or random access memory. The "300 that's running nothing" is used by the processor to complete tasks. I think that the more you have available, the quicker new tasks will be executed.

That's about right. HTC sense is a big resource hog for all the eye-candy. Once some AOSP roms come out all that bloat will be removed and the memory will be available. Also some people swear by task-killers to free RAM but many sources say that those are actually worse for efficiency/battery life. Android is supposed to use more RAM and use it efficiently. As far as task-killers go, that's up to the individual user I guess and therefore I won't go into it any further.
BTW, thanks for the "thanks" I guess, even though it was unintentional.

Sounds like something is off if you seriously have your phone fresh out of the box and you're having RAM that low.
I have open Internet (Aurora), Plants v Zombies, Root Explorer, Market, Gmail, Twin Pic, and all the other stuff that's always running (I don't use any task killers), and I still have 229MB free.
They all show the same amount of RAM total, but there shouldn't be anything running you down that low. I find myself hard-pressed to get below 200MB regardless of what I run.
Download a task manager (a real one, not the built-in one) and check out what's eating up so much RAM.

Ding ding ding! That is the first intelligent thought that I have read in this thread. It also happens to be the right answer.

Where did all the RAM go? Seems a bit heavy.

817 MB of RAM. I assume the OS has 200MB reserved. On boot up, it says about 550MB in use and 267 Free. Whats chomping up the memory? Right now built in task manager says only "Internet" browser is open and using 70MB. But only 150MB Free. Wheres all the memory going?
Also, is video memory dedicated ot shared? Thanks in advance.
Bro we're running sense. Mac OS probably uses less resources.
Although ur task manager has no active apps, there still are cached apps. Android does this automatically so the apps u used recently will launch faster. This has nothing to do with sense. Although, sense ui and process do take up a lot of active and cached memory. I would not worry that you don't have enough memory. As son as you launch an app that requires more memory android will clear active and cached processes until it has enough to run your request.
You also don't see system or hidden processes that are using memory in the task manager...

New to htc, coming from og Droid
Use the clean tool in the dev section. Disabling all the bloatware and especially sense has increased my available memory tremendously. As I write this reply, my total free memory is 383mb with a few small things running. Previously, with the internet and a few apps open I was seeing closer to 150mb. All the crap that comes preloaded really bogs down the phone.
For what its worth, my quadrant score went from 2100 avg to 2500 avg.

I know everyone keeps saying its a sense thing but I have my doubt about that. I have an stock rezound ( no debloating no desensing). I have 124 apps installed. I always have no less then 320mb of free ram every time I have checked. I would say yes sense does use about 150-200 mb of the ram. But if your using an ADW, Go Launcher, or whatever launcher you use and you use a lot of widgets I would say your not really saving much. But as others have said I wouldn't worry about it cause android will manage your ram as needed.

I have anywhere from 450 MB -500 MB of RAM free upon boot w/ all widgets loaded etc. If I have a ton of apps open I have like 200-250 free at all times. Debloated and Desensed.
Thanks for all the replies. I totally forgot about Sense. But I'm not complaining, it runs smooth and fast always. The bloatware is more of an annoyance than anything. I dont use 3/4th of the crap they threw in there. As for root, I'm waiting for the perm root. I like to reboot every now and then as it clears out some garbage memory that sometimes causes problems....like cached js in the browsers. You can clear cache in settings, but I bet it dont clear whats in RAM.
I know it has its own graphics processor, but does anyone know if it shares the RAM or has its own dedicated memory chipset?

sense barely approaches 60mb for me. Its all in what you use. Adw uses about 45, android pro widgets for my calender and contacts uses 15mb, hd widgets uses 15mb...
I have no problems with a stripped version of sense where you freeze or uninstall the parts you don't use.
I only use adw because of the choice in customizations, not because it runs faster. It doesn't for me. Scrolling wallpaper is jerky.

[Q] Love the note but its crawling!!!

Hey guys, havent really ever posted much but here goes:
I just bought the note, and switched to at&t just for the phone, i absolutely love the idea of having a small tablet that fits in your pocket that also makes your calls.
but.....
I'm comming from sprint's galaxy s2 (epic 4g touch). That phone was superfast. I feel like this phone absolutely crawls in comparison, its laggy and jumpy and things just take so long to open up... switching between things isnt as instantaneuos as before.. Another surefire way i know that something is definitely worse is that before on my gs2 i was able to run adownloader, downloading as many as 4 torrents at a time without the phone slowing down to terribly and i was even able to watch avi videos normally while downloading. now, the phone comes to a complete stop.
Now, to be fair, i did root my sg2 a few months ago and installed a custom rom but i never overclocked it, but maybe thats why that phone was faster. could it be that when devs start making custom roms for this one it will "speed up"?
Because im sorry this phone is so laggy now.....

I noticed that every once in a while I have to do a "clear memory" in the task manager to speed up the Note. Not sure what's going on, maybe a memory leak. It won't be long until we have ICS and I'm sure that will speed it up quite a bit.

You mean system power saving option? Or is there another option called energy saver? Just checking you never know.
There seem to be HUGE performance differences between the LTE notes. I got lucky and have a super fast one.
Everything, and I mean everything, is hardcore fast and super smooth. This note is faster than the H+ galaxy nexus and much faster than the SGS2 Skyrocket side-by-side. Quadrant (new) scores around 2900-3200 and I'm totally stock with no modifications. Apps open instantly, there is no waiting, no stuttering and if you search for my posts, you'll see my screenshots of over 5 hours of screen on time with over 21 hours of unplugged time in an LTE zone (Atlanta).
My point being: if your Note isn't working as I have just described, be aware that there are notes out there that do, mine being one of them. Go exchange it. When you get one that performs as it should, this is the fastest and best performing phone on the market currently. I've tested it side-by-side with the best.

And yes, when roms start coming in, this phone will scream even more. Everyone *****ing about it not having an exynos. Here's a nugget of info: you can overclock the hell out of snapdragon, much more than exynos. Clock-for-clock exynos is faster but when devs jump in, snapdragon will be faster in the long run due to overclockability. You watch, this processor will break 2ghz and still have great battery life once smart processor scaling gets implemented into ROMs.
Hell, Da_G was near 2ghz (1.93) before the phone was officially publicly released. In time, these clocks will become stable.

Get on YouTube. Go look up the phonedog ATT Galaxy Note review. In it, the quadrant benchmark score is 1700ish, he's using totally stock software with static wallpaper. Yours, at 2500 was 800 over his. Quadrant fluctuations? Random variables? Different note performance? My claim of 2900-3200 shouldn't be "questionable", as if your incinuating I'm lying, when there is already 800 points difference between a huge YouTube reviewer and yours.
I hate benchmarks. Don't care what they say as I find it rarely relates to real-performance. Already have quadrant uninstalled from my note. Yet people use it and live by it, so when discussing performance, I have no choice but to use it for comparison. My note absolutely screams and if yours doesn't, something, somewhere, is wrong.

Just out of curiosity, what color is your Note?
My GF has the white one, and I have the carbon blue one. Just like you, hers keeps hitting quadrant scores of 2800 +, reaching up to ~ 3100. Mine has topped at 2800, hitting usually ~ 2500.
Needless to say, quadrant isn't very consistent, and hers sometimes hits around 2300, but mine has never gone over 2800.
I know that benchmark scores are in no way a reliable way of measuring a device's performance, but after paying a hefty price for the phone, and seeing that one next to mine which was also purchased at the exact same time and has the exact same specs is getting a consistent "better performance", makes me wonder if I should ask for an exchange.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Edit ---
Forgot to mention, the overall phone performance seems to be smoother on her Note. Mine has some lag, mostly on the home screen, whereas hers barely lags at all.
I have the Black one, and it is laggy as hell. I mean horrible. Like I keep debating taking it back.
Anyway, my quadrant is always around 2500.

OK. can we get a poll here, i guess i should start a new thread for this, but mine is black and laggy as hell to. can people post their colors? Best buy said that they dont exchange for color though.. not sure what to do..
Before root and rom/kernal, Note was laggy at times, tried adw (much better) and go launcher (better) then I rooted and rom'ed and I got 3842 running the oc Kernal, its flying! I will say stock though the skyrocket I had was faster, no lag at all

RAM is full

Since a few weeks my S is really slow and unstable, i only have about 40 mb free ram. There are hardly any apps running. The launcher redraws every time I use an app and I also get a memory error when using the camera from time to time.
Any ideas what's causing this?
Running ICS
ICS is really eating a lot of ram.. I end up having 60mb :-S
GB on my Xperia U is a lot smoother

same here.. ****ed up software from Sony, hope they bring out a fix really soon it's very annoying :crying:
yes, but not for this, I have 280-350 mb of ram free, when I conect for first step has 420 mb free, reflash your xperia, root it and delete more apps unusables.
cheers
There is a problem with ram on this phone,I've deleted most system applications( hdmi, wappush, usbotg, mtp vpn, backup, email, exchange, tts, and really more....) only 80 apps( system and downloaded) left.
the maximum remaining ram i could get is 320MB
I am using MIUI that means no Timescape and blalabla

I also have some concerns regarding the memory management on the XS. I owned a htc evo 3d (same amount of ram) and, even with the hungry Sense interface, I used to have around 400 mb of free ram.
Right now, with my rooted and cleaned XS I have just 80 mb of free ram...

How epic to see people rage about ram on android..
The mostly common thing people should do...
Search and read..
Android isnt windows..
Its like this:
You play Battlefield 3 on your pc but your diagrams says: Gpu(graphical proces unit) usage 60%.
So your card is not working optimum.. So what should we do now? I have an idea! Lets bring out an patch!
*Next day releasing patch like a boss*
(not)
You start the game and guess what!?
It needs to be updated. So thats done, you start the game and its now 100%! Wow what an improvement! And it has higher fps!
Thats the idea of the android memory management. Its just for us to not to rage because its `slow`.
Short:
More memory for system is better, more space.

Efe, thank you for your post but: 1. I am not a noob and 2. I wrote the very same things tens of times to people asking for killing apps manually.
I just wanted to underline the difference between two devices with identical amount of ram. I wouldn't complain about the ram management in the XS if it wasn't for the home redraw, which I never experienced on the evo.
(sorry for bringing up againg this aged topic)

Yes, I understand that you are like the pro-master-hero of android, but the problem here is that the ram IS FULL! And the phone HANGS!
I've heard that when you need ram, the android system kills apps that you aren't using to free-up some space, but actually my phone doesn't do that, it just becomes really slow untill I kill manually some applications from the apps/running tab.
What can I do to fix that?
(I run ICS)
Use a RAM cleaner, like from the app "Airdroid"
Lol scavenger digging.
Anyway in those last two years I learned that android is more ram-hungry than, say, Windows xp.
So with 512mb there is very little you can do but save money for something with more ram.

Galaxy S2 faster than S3?

So I just compared my GF's S2 (my old phone) with my S3 and I noticed that the S2 is actually faster in loading most apps. Mostly in stock apps like messaging, play store and youtube but also in games like ruzzle or when long pressing the button so the multitasking menu comes up. Performance wise the S3 still beats the S2 (benchmarks and games) so thats why I wonder why things like I mentioned are faster on the S2.
Both phones are on the latest stock rom.

I actually have noticed that too..
The s2 stock sammy based roms are better/faster to me than the s3 ones...
I think the s3 ones suck big time basicaly... (except jelly bean of course... )
I use only AOSP right now and i suggest you to do the same until jelly bean is out...
Maybe its the touchwiz crap..
Touchwiz 4 was pretty light.. then they added Touchwiz 5/UX and all that extra gimmick features that no one will notice or use on a daily..
If it's that much faster than your s3 than just use your s2 this thread is just whiny and really has no business here. Hoping a mod will quickly lock this. I mean really saying the s2 is faster than the s3 will do nothing more than incite a flame war and insults. seriously stop posting dumb stuff like this.

No way, I have used stock non rooted s2 side by side with my S3 and S3 always ended faster/smoother by miles.
I think the op has poorly configured his s3.

Is it still GB? GB is definitely lighter than ICS and it is faster to render 800X480 than 720p.
That said, I think the GS2 was a bit of a fluke. Not very often do you have a phone released so early in the year dominate for the entire year, especially an Android one. It was a bit of the Exynos catching the cycle early while Qualcomm and OMAP were still milking their last gen chips. Either way, way ahead of its time.

yes i've done this test too. i put both phone side by side and launch apps simultaneously.
s2 is definitely faster in loading app most of the time. however it only happen on first launch or app that have not been launch for a while. if you repeatedly open the same app, then the difference is negligible.
my unprofessional take on this is that it is probably ram related. on s2 where there is usually ample ram, the apps launch into ram straight off, whereas on s3 (mine tends to have only about 100+mb free ram and i've frozen most of the bloats), it needs to page out unused processes before the new app can be loaded.
also bear in mind that s3 has to cope with a larger screen resolution and as you noted is quicker in raw performance.
i am curious to see this test performed on the international 1gb s3 vs the korean 2gb s3 though!

How can I have poorly configured my phone? I did a complete whipe yesterday and I have no software on it that could slug the device.

Also one thing I noticed with facebook is that if you launch it without having it opened earlier, the S2 will beat the S3 by some seconds, but then if you close it and open it again the S2 first shows the logo again for a couple of second and then shows the newsfeed while my S3 immediately drops into my newsfeed.

just go to SETTINGS -> DEVELOPER OPTIONS and change the WINDOW ANIMATION SCALE and TRANSITION ANIMATION SCALE to 0.5x and see the changes

How could it be poorly configured? Well, for one, I find that my S3 runs significantly faster when S voice is disabled. Similarly, there is a whole host of background running apps and resource hogging processes that come out of the box. After disabling all of these, my S3 performs better than any other phone.
However, if you're merely comparing the speed of opening the app drawer or opening a mere app like messages, then even a single cored phone can sometimes open these things faster, depending on what's currently in the ram. It's just like how a regular computer can calculate 1+1 as fast as a super computer, as measured using the naked eye.

The answer to this is if you've done any benchmarks eg. Antutu you'll notice that the sd card speeds on the sgs3 are pretty average for a high end device. This is what's causing apps to load unoptimally. Custom roms and kernels can help though.

While I agree with you in most things, the ram of the phones were both almost equally full. Also loading apps is completely dependant of how fast the phone's processor is but also how fast the flash and ram memory is and really can't be compared to 1+1. So the S3 should just launch everything quicker, but it doesn't which struck me as odd. I think it has to do something with how Samsung programmed the phone. Which would seem to me as bad programming. But then again I don't know a **** about programming.

See benchmark comparison image. Notice how the sgs3 has slower write and database io compared to the hox and slower read compared to the Meizu.
I get > 50MB/s on my sgs3 because I'm using a wanam 2.2 + siyah 1.5.2 so if you want to squeeze out some extra performance, use custom ****.

Hi, this screen shot is off the latest jelly been leak, and my i/o is excellent, one of the best on any device I own. I have both the s2 and s3 and the s3 is by far the fastest when they were both on stock or both on cm9.
