The memory you're talking about here is called RAM, or random access memory. The "300 that's running nothing" is used by the processor to complete tasks. I think that the more you have available, the quicker new tasks will be executed.

That's about right. HTC sense is a big resource hog for all the eye-candy. Once some AOSP roms come out all that bloat will be removed and the memory will be available. Also some people swear by task-killers to free RAM but many sources say that those are actually worse for efficiency/battery life. Android is supposed to use more RAM and use it efficiently. As far as task-killers go, that's up to the individual user I guess and therefore I won't go into it any further.
BTW, thanks for the "thanks" I guess, even though it was unintentional.

THE damned part is i have as much ram left as on my iphone 3gs and thats just bad.. ~120mb with doing nothing. played 1 game and opened 1 app and 2 tabs internet..
Sounds like something is off if you seriously have your phone fresh out of the box and you're having RAM that low.
I have open Internet (Aurora), Plants v Zombies, Root Explorer, Market, Gmail, Twin Pic, and all the other stuff that's always running (I don't use any task killers), and I still have 229MB free.
They all show the same amount of RAM total, but there shouldn't be anything running you down that low. I find myself hard-pressed to get below 200MB regardless of what I run.
Download a task manager (a real one, not the built-in one) and check out what's eating up so much RAM.

817 MB of RAM. I assume the OS has 200MB reserved. On boot up, it says about 550MB in use and 267 Free. Whats chomping up the memory? Right now built in task manager says only "Internet" browser is open and using 70MB. But only 150MB Free. Wheres all the memory going?
Also, is video memory dedicated ot shared? Thanks in advance.
Bro we're running sense. Mac OS probably uses less resources.
Although ur task manager has no active apps, there still are cached apps. Android does this automatically so the apps u used recently will launch faster. This has nothing to do with sense. Although, sense ui and process do take up a lot of active and cached memory. I would not worry that you don't have enough memory. As son as you launch an app that requires more memory android will clear active and cached processes until it has enough to run your request.
You also don't see system or hidden processes that are using memory in the task manager...

It's sense man. It is the HEAVIEST manufacturer skin out there period. If you want more free resources you can always temp root and debloat/de-sense. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367591 has what you need. Not sure what temp root he has there. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1373471 the temp root in this thread lasts a long time, unless you reboot then it will be gone. Good luck!

Use the clean tool in the dev section. Disabling all the bloatware and especially sense has increased my available memory tremendously. As I write this reply, my total free memory is 383mb with a few small things running. Previously, with the internet and a few apps open I was seeing closer to 150mb. All the crap that comes preloaded really bogs down the phone.
For what its worth, my quadrant score went from 2100 avg to 2500 avg.

I know everyone keeps saying its a sense thing but I have my doubt about that. I have an stock rezound ( no debloating no desensing). I have 124 apps installed. I always have no less then 320mb of free ram every time I have checked. I would say yes sense does use about 150-200 mb of the ram. But if your using an ADW, Go Launcher, or whatever launcher you use and you use a lot of widgets I would say your not really saving much. But as others have said I wouldn't worry about it cause android will manage your ram as needed.

I have anywhere from 450 MB -500 MB of RAM free upon boot w/ all widgets loaded etc. If I have a ton of apps open I have like 200-250 free at all times. Debloated and Desensed.
Thanks for all the replies. I totally forgot about Sense. But I'm not complaining, it runs smooth and fast always. The bloatware is more of an annoyance than anything. I dont use 3/4th of the crap they threw in there. As for root, I'm waiting for the perm root. I like to reboot every now and then as it clears out some garbage memory that sometimes causes problems....like cached js in the browsers. You can clear cache in settings, but I bet it dont clear whats in RAM.
I know it has its own graphics processor, but does anyone know if it shares the RAM or has its own dedicated memory chipset?

sense barely approaches 60mb for me. Its all in what you use. Adw uses about 45, android pro widgets for my calender and contacts uses 15mb, hd widgets uses 15mb...
I have no problems with a stripped version of sense where you freeze or uninstall the parts you don't use.
I only use adw because of the choice in customizations, not because it runs faster. It doesn't for me. Scrolling wallpaper is jerky.
So... I have been struggling to get rid of home screen lag on this device. I am now down to about 5 Widgets and only 2 home screens populated and I still have to consistently wait for the home screen to populate. Sometimes it takes 6-7 seconds, which Is really annoying. Anyway I downloaded memory booster to keep the ram cleaned up, and it indicates that I only have 768mb, not the advertised 1gb. On my xyboard it indicates the correct amount... did I get a bad device or has anyone else noticed this too? My unlocked note has 800mb free while my att note has 768mb free..not to mention my unlocked note gets way better battery life and doesn't lag. I wanted to stay with the att version but too many issues. Unlike my skyrocket which was flawless. Maybe att needs to push out an update for the note to smooth it out.

Well it seems that the note does have 1gb of ram but 300mb of that is inactive?? How do we activate it!!!! lol If you download and install quadrant and look at the information tab all the way at the bottom it has ram information and this is what it says. if it really is inactive im not happy because we need all the ram we can get, i sure it would help out with the lag.
I think you need to hard reset your device. I am using the stock launcher and have no lag whatsoever. Yes it is 768mb but that's enough. I froze all my non needed apps BTW.

I think odds are that 256mb is being used by the gpu. There is no such thing as the kernal 'hiding' ram. Unfortunate thought that the gpu doesnt have its own discrete memory.
I have a sensation with the revolution HD rom. In gingerbread it was absolutely the fastest GUI I have ever used on an android device. In ICS, though, its slower. 768mb of ram just isnt enough to take advantage of android. Again, sigh.
I, also, have frozen more apps than I have seen anyone else post yet. Still consistently sitting at about 560-600mb used.
It does have 1gb of RAM but the OS uses the other 200-something. Even my skyrocket and hercules had the same amount. if you use CM then it frees up some more space. Also, how is 700mb+ ram not enough? o-o I've NEVER seen mine go over 550 used out of the total available, no matter how many apps I'm running. I also read that in Android/Linux, the ram that isn't used is useless so the more ram it uses the better (I may be wrong on that?)
Not to jack this thread; but really where is the proof?! Just because someone says it does, does not mean it does... I do not know if it does or does not have 1GB of RAM but I think we all want to know...
Here is some proof that the Samsung Captivate really only has 384MB of traditional RAM...
http://sean-the-electrofreak.blogspot.com/2010/12/mystery-solved-how-samsung-pulls-off.html
I have been looking for something like this regarding the Note...
According to what I have read... the way linux/android uses memory is nothing like windows... as long as there is enough to run the program... everything is fine... not like in windows where things run better with more memory free...
My guess on your lag is that you have something in the background eating up cpu cycles...
Maybe watchdog might give you some more information?

This guy here is correct. In android the more RAM won't speed up performance of the OS. Android is not designed like windows. Killing apps will increase battery life, but not performance.
The note DOES have 1gb or ram. A portion of it is inactive UNTIL the point you use up all your available 732mb of RAM (which is no easy task considering how the OS closes inactive apps in exchange for another). This is probably done so that the OS is not wasting hardware resources for no reason.
So in all, RAM itself is not the reason your phone has performance issues. Their may be a particular app causing a cpu problem. I would also consider maybe using a higher clock speed maybe? Although I have not done so myself and my note runs great.

Its like this:
You play Battlefield 3 on your pc but your diagrams says: Gpu(graphical proces unit) usage 60%.
So your card is not working optimum.. So what should we do now? I have an idea! Lets bring out an patch!

You start the game and guess what!?
It needs to be updated. So thats done, you start the game and its now 100%! Wow what an improvement! And it has higher fps!
Thats the idea of the android memory management. Its just for us to not to rage because its `slow`.

Efe, thank you for your post but: 1. I am not a noob and 2. I wrote the very same things tens of times to people asking for killing apps manually.
I just wanted to underline the difference between two devices with identical amount of ram. I wouldn't complain about the ram management in the XS if it wasn't for the home redraw, which I never experienced on the evo.
(sorry for bringing up againg this aged topic)

Yes, I understand that you are like the pro-master-hero of android, but the problem here is that the ram IS FULL! And the phone HANGS!
I've heard that when you need ram, the android system kills apps that you aren't using to free-up some space, but actually my phone doesn't do that, it just becomes really slow untill I kill manually some applications from the apps/running tab.
What can I do to fix that?
(I run ICS)
Use a RAM cleaner, like from the app "Airdroid"
Lol scavenger digging.
Anyway in those last two years I learned that android is more ram-hungry than, say, Windows xp.
So with 512mb there is very little you can do but save money for something with more ram.
Last month, i've posted my nexus 5x was upgraded to 4GB RAM on XDA.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/general/4gb-ram-upgraded-nexus-5x-t3588743
Not sure you guys know it already or not, a 4GB RAM upgraded Nexus 6P has been made in China last month, this 6P came with the bootloop which the same issue in 5X.

nah, he fixed this bootloop nexus 6p and upgraded to 4gb ram at the same time.
Good to know... some may do it if they have the back cover off to replace the battery, etc.

lol considering android has piss poor ram management, you wouldn't notice any benefit anyway.

The ram management is actually very good. Ram management can differ from rom and kernel and what apps you use. Saying ram management is bad for Android in general is kind of stupid because that is very far from the truth.

It really isn't man...
Why do you think phones are coming out with more and more ram? 6 to 8 gigs now..
Why do you think other os's can get by with 1 to 2 gb?
It is pretty commonly known it has bad ram management. Ask devs themselves if you don't believe me. Stuff gets closed after being in the background for mere minutes.
It is very poor actually, potentially the worst part of android imo.

While that's partly true I still stand by my point as it isn't the case with the whole android os. Some phones do have bad ram management and need lots of ram. However some phones I have used like ones with 1gb of ram have run very smooth and I've checked ram management from lots of phones and the majority of them are very smooth and have great ram management. I'm not sure if the ram management problem you are talking is from old versions of Android and how old the info you are getting is but it could very likely be improved with new os and kernel updates.

Nah man it's an android os issue...
Watch speed tests with other os's. The pixel for example even gets destroyed by phones on other os's.
---------- Post added at 12:53 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:50 AM ----------
That being said, supposedly android O is supposed to be fixing that. Stopping apps being able to go crazy in the background chewing up resources
Also how would it be older versions or old info? I'm on the same phone you are.
Yup an 1gb RAM Android device is a crap and slow phone as hell... I'm a fan of android but we have to say the truth, android RAM management isn't nearly to be the best, for example you can install and run Windows 7 even Windows 10 on a 512 MB of RAM and runs pretty well. And a Android device needs at least 2gb to run decently and you'll see some redraws some times.
But I'm happy with my Angler (best phone that I but every) and will buy the Pixel 2, Android rules ?

It's awesome for sure. I love it but would still like to see improvements. I feel like it's time they took performance more seriously.
Though I know how it works on here. If I'm critical in any way people don't want to hear it. Things don't get better if you act like they're perfect.

I assume you are talking about IOS since it's the only relevant major OS rival.
Now here is the question; can apps and Android run better than IOS even with the same Ram size? in theory yes if only Android was installed into one brand and apps are optimized for that brand devices like what is happening with Apple Iphone. The simple truth is that an app developed for 1 brand will always run smoother and faster than the ones developed for multiple brands and devices.
So the major issue isn't how much ram you need because Android can run smoothly with 1G of ram but as long there are updates to apps and those apps aren't specifically optimized for that device you wont get the same smooth performance you felt when you first used your device. The other point i would like to add is that you will always need more ram whether it's Android or IOS because of the nature of development and hardware power needed for better visual performance.

Has zero to do with how it performs, and IOS yes but others as well. I love android and ios, both for different reasons.
What I am talking about is ram management. It closes apps randomly in the background, often within a few seconds. I hate coming right back to an app or game to find it closed.
Android phones with 4-6gb still have this issue, and it is a huge one.

I see, but the reason that some apps are being killed isn't random it's because of battery optimization which started with the introduction of Dose in Marshmallow and now a little improved on Nougat and will continue on with Android O. If you go to the battery section in settings and check your apps you will see most of them are optimised if you want certain apps to not be closed simply select don't optomise and they will not be closed but all of this will be on the expense of your battery life.
This article will further explain: http://www.androidbeat.com/2017/03/how-to-stop-android-apps-killed-marshmallow-nougat/

I know all about this..
Been using Android since 2008. Even on the pixel it's still an issue, watch speed tests yourself. Closing an app you literally just had open has nothing to do with battery life or optimisation.
It lets background apps devour ram with nothing to reign them in, while apps that you just opened and use much less ram get closed instantly. It does not allocate it how it should.
O will be fixing that anyway no doubt, from what I've read at least.
he just fixed my bootloop issue by replace my cpu
I haven't seen anyone do a comparison between the two, but what are your experiences so far with this setting?
I am now on light, but it is quite hard to tell since i am not using the phine the dame way. It feels that the battery goes down slower, but I am at the point where i am not sure if it is really so or I just eant it to be. I dont feel the phone performance drop, but I have not done any heavy duty tasks on light
I've done benches comparing the two, the standard gives me a lower single core score and a higher multi core score. But when I switched to the light mode, the single core score went up and the multi core score went down. I've seen someone apparently got some insane high scores with the S23 ultra, as in 1600 single core score and 5400 on the multi, but there wasn't really any kind of revelation how they got it.

I get 1594 on single and 5127 on multi, thats on standard profile.
How the ****? I've done many runs and I've never even had 5k on the multiscore....

This was my latest pass, just few moments ago, with active cooling... Yes it's above the 1.5k and 5k but only now, with additional cooling, and it's not even that much higher. While you're nearing 1.6k and 5.2. I've got a ****ing dud... Cause if no one else has to do anything special and can get those scores consistently and higher, then clearly my phone is a ****ing potatoe...
Just ran another one. Don't know what to tell you :/ I know there is like a hidden code that you could input and generate a system dump and find the CPU bin score but I can't remember it
My man, do you think there's any chance you could find it out for me? I'm really curious but I haven't found anything online for newer samsung phones without having root.

I would be interested to see how this affects the battery life overall in light mode.
I get 1514 and 4831

Dont be angry this benchmark was a fckn trash with totally random scores.... I got 1200 sometimes at single core... And running again the test right after, with much hotter cpu i get 1400+ score... Next 1300...Next 1500... Its a total random trash.

Yep. With these kinds of benches you have to do 5-10 of them and average the results to find the real number.
