Hi all,
I am a proud owner of HTC Amaze, running BulletProof ROM with Faux Kernel v08.
The issue I am experiencing is most probably hardware issue, but I still hope it is not.
My backlight does not work at all. The phone works fine, and under heavy light you can see the actual screen, and can operate the phone as usual, but of course, otherwise, the phone is unusable, since you cannot see anything.
I've tried factory reset, restored to previous backup, charged it till full, left it without battery for few hours, nothing helped. Backlight is simply not there.
Soft buttons have the backlight, but not the screen.
There is a chance that it could be a battery issue (caused by phone), since it is my second battery, original one just died one day and refused to be charged. I got a new battery under warranty.
But even with a new battery it's been acting wierd. Random restarts after which the battery indicator would show red explanation mark. Had to take out the battery and reboot for it to work normal again.
It might be that my phone is defective and just kills batteries.
But in case of the backlight, the battery still charges normally (at least the indicators shows that it does).
Any idea what is going on with my phone? Had anyone experienced something similar? Could it be caused by software? Are there any hard reset options I can try?
And second question, if I will have to go to warranty, is there a way to relock the bootloader? And, I am sure I could find it, but if anyone has it handy, could you link me to a place where I can get the original WIND ROM and original Kernel?
What do you think are my chances of the warranty being granted?

Well i am sorry to say i cant tell you whats wrong, but i can answer one of your questions. Yes, you can relock the bootloader, but it says "relocked". But if it is a hardware problem, being unlocked or relocked shouldnt matter, they should still warranty it for you.. if it is in fact a hardware issue that is..

If you plan on sending in for warranty, there's no harm in using the ruu to go back to stock and seeing if in fact it is something with the software

I was just thinking the same thing. but he had mentioned he didnt kno where to get the original wind rom from. But ya, definately go back to stock and see what happens. If ur still having the problem, then i would bet its safe to say that is a problem with the phone not something you did.
As for the shipped Wind Mobile rom, you can find the RUU here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1335703
Rom||RUU|| Shipped Ruby ROM Collection
There is also a link in that thread to show you how to "relock" you bootloader.
Hope this helps. If you need help or run into any problems when trying to relock and go back to stock rom, just let me know man, ive had to do it on my phone too so ya, Good luck bro!

Thanks all for the reply.
Well, finding WIND RUU wasn't a challenge at all . Thanks for the link anyways.
Never thought I would have to go back to that creature again.
I will give it a try. Also one of my work buddies has the same phone, so I'll swap batteries with him to eliminate another potential issue.
Even though we have the same phones and the same provider, he always jokes around by saying that I have a crappy phone (our old tradition, back from the time we had different phones). Well at last he might be correct

Well, it's not like it fries it instantaneously, it takes time and effort from my phone to do it
So if I'll insert it for few second to see if my backlight will come back, battery won't die, and I'll I know what's wrong with my phone, and that there is no point of me getting the third battery, since the same fate will be awaiting it.
In any case, if return to stock won't help, warranty is the only option, which is sad

Ok guys, yes...I'm a noob...
I did a master reset on the phone and now I get nothing...
It won't turn on unless I plug it in to the charger.
When it does turn on, all I get is a few vibrations, and
the icons at the bottom light up.
I can get windows to see the two "drives" of the phone,
but they are empty (have 0 bytes if you right click and check properties. If you left click, it says please insert disc).
I've tried a new battery and my battery turns another phone on...
I've also tried two cables and two PCs.
It hasn't been rooted or messed with, the battery died and I went to charge
it and nothing...I left it on charge overnight and at least see a bit life.
Any ideas, or should I just send it on to HTC??
So that others have a better idea... can you get into hboot or fastboot?

he said he already tried a new charged battery, so it can't be that. I'm thinking his phone's OS might be gone so he should probably installed a RUU or something.
In the dark...
Can't see anything come up on screen...
no idea what mode it's in, hboot, fastboot or anything ??!?!!
Think it might be possible to install just a stock (Tmobile) RUU?? If so, how ?????

There isn't a way if your phone isn't detected or you can't get into hboot. Meaning you have no control over your phone to do anything.
Anyways, for htc warranty exchanges that is done with tmobile... they usually send you the phone first and then you send one back in return. Unless your policy is different. So i suggest you calling them immediately.
Update
I can go into control panel and "see" the phone listed in device manager under portable devices as "F" and "G". Click properties and they are found as HTC devices. Does this mean I can do anything to it? I just want my phone back working as fast as I can. Sending it in will take a while. I bought this phone for the camera. We have a 1 yr old and don't wanna miss the Christmas pics...

are you on tmobile? they usually send within 2 days, their distribution center is in texas or something. I usually get it next day.
You said your screen doesn't turn on or doesn't show anything. It's gonna be hard to determine what you're doing even if you can run ADB to put it in oem fastboot and to flash a RUU that way. But it sounds like your display might be a problem too then. It'll be quicker to do an exchange. If you call in today, they'll probably ship it on monday and you'll get it wednesday latest. unless you have tmobile insurance plan. it should be next day and you'll get it tuesday.
Thanks
Well that might work for me then...can't hurt to give it a try.
Thanks a bunch for letting me know !!!
No problem, I had my fair share dealing with tmobile exchanges lol.
If you purchased directly from tmobile it should be very easy to do an exchange because your warranty is verified.
If you bought it off craigslist/ebay. sometimes the previous users used a different carriers that makes the warranty no longer verified. HOWEVER many customer reps will still try to process the exchange (you can determine by their upbeat personalities lol).
If you run into someone who won't do it, just call again and talk to another rep. Most of the time they will push it through because it's still a newly released phone.
Have you already contacted T-Mobile support? You'll have to talk to them anyway before they agree to replace your phone.
The reason I am asking this is because there might be an unpublished backdoor way to restore your device if your device is not completely (hardware-wise) dead. For example, Dell Streak has a complete firmware image on its internal SD card and you needed to somehow trigger an IPL routine to restore the device to its original condition.
I haven't heard of anything similar on HTC devices yet, but hey, it's just a thought. And if there actually is a way, and you are the first one to post it here, you'll be a hero!

yeah we normally just flash a RUU, but you can't even see the screen, so we can't even be certain that we're in the correct modes to be flashing and stuff. because we require to ADB it to restart in fastboot, but we can't even see if its going to fastboot. or if it already is in fastboot to begin with, so we're not certain which commands to run with the screen being off. Well you can always try commands and it should only work in certain modes, but do you really want to do it blindly? I would rather just exchange the thing.
Not afraid to try....
Well, I can't use it as it is...exchange is a hassle even in 2-3 days. Can't do anything until tomorrow anyway. I was thinking today, I've heard they can port Android to iPhone...there's no fastboot there, is there ??? Soooooo, if it's turning on, I should be able to do something...I want my phone back !!!
Edit: I misunderstood the issue

---See Update below at end of this post---
The phone was running fine till yesterday however it got discharged. Upon reaching home, I put the phone on charge forgot to turn it on. I remember the orange light on phone was on. About 2 hours later, I noticed that there was no notification light. I tried to turn on the phone but it didn't turn on
I removed the battery and tried again, the same thing. I put the charger cable back in, the orange light blinked a couple of time and it became steady orange. Tried to turn the phone on again and the light again went off. I tried the same thing over and over its the same result. I connected the phone to windows, its detected as qhsusb_dload and need drivers for it. I've searched around xda for it, I've found it means the phone is bricked for phones having qualcomm chipset, but the strange thing is it usually happens because of bad flash. My phone was running fine without any problems for past couple of weeks and I hadn't had flashed anything for last 2-3 days, I don't know what went wrong
Any idea how should I proceed ?
I bought my phone from eBay about 3 weeks back. I'm thinking of contacting the eBay seller and ask if they have tmobile warranty for it?
The other thing I could do is purchase squaretrade warranty and ask them for a repair 45 days later.
But I don't know, I had unlocked the bootloader and installed a custom ROM on it (although I was on stock kernel). Do you guys think, HTC or squaretrade will honor the warranty on it ? I know the second option is kind of immoral, but i dont want to lose $400 I just spent
--- UPDATE 03/31 ---
I got the replacement battery from HTC, using it my phone started. Later on, I changed to X's touch recovery and kernel to Faux 009 and guess what I was able to revive my dead battery also by charging via phone itself... I dont know where the bug lied exactly as somebody mentioned at other place the stock kernel in NRGZ thread is different from tmo stock and causing problems. My guess is bad recovery though as the CWM 5.0.2.6 for Amaze here doesn't support off charging...
--- UPDATE 04/05 ---
Member andy55 confirmed this bug is due to bad recovery and the stock kernel itself is fine.
I would suggest everyone to not use official CWM 5.0.2.6 recovery. Rather switch to Xboarder56's version of ClockworkMOD 5.5.0.4 or Touch 5.8.0.9 RC2
If a mod can put this above information in the reference thread for Amaze..It would save a lot of potential probs in Amaze's in here

Yes, I know its the most strange thing ever happened.
Do you or anybody know if sensation battery works on it. My room mate has a sensation I can ask him for his battery and try it out
sounds like the same thing that happened to my backup amaze. I swapped batteries and the same issue was affecting the other one, so its the battery. One of my amaze's is rooted rom'd etc and the other is stock, and the same issue affected the stock one, so its not a brick.
Good time to upgrade to an anker

HTC also replaces any accessory once, you could call and they'd probably send you a free battery.
I just got another back cover from them, since my old one was creaking.
To Discharge the battery, you could get a couple led lights and tape them to the + and - terminals of the battery and just let it die.
Radioshack has leds.
Probably not the easiest way... But it would work.

If you have a qsb_load brick caused in any way, plz try to identify your phones emmc like they did here in the link for the sensation in a Linux environment. You can only access this mode on a bricked phone.
I think we may be able to s-off using a version of this method. Ultimately intentionally bricking a phone and achieve installing a cracked boot loader and s-off.

Ok, I went through the thread to make out, what they are trying to do, however, without much success...
I couldn't find the pin they use on sensation to ground it to SD card frame, to put it in download mode. See the image attached, its kind of different from sensation. Also I can't find it any instructions for Linux environment, its mostly windows based (drivers and software). Can you point out the post or do a write up ? I have a mac with me, I'm guessing it would be same for os X also..
Anyway I don't know, if I should be doing all this...since I plan to RMA the phone to HTC incase it doesn't work with new battery.
However, if its indeed battery related and it does work with new battery, what I can do is ship you the battery which causes the brick. You can try the things on your Amaze, if you want to...since you seem better technically sound than me

HTC Sensation Battery DOES work in the Amaze.
Independent battery charger DOES work as well.
I use Anker battery 1900 mAh from Amazon.
I use an external charger also found on Amazon (white- about $10).
As stated in the title...my wife's Amaze 4G is completely stock. The other day it started having trouble charging, so I charge her battery in my phone. Now the phone will not turn on at all. All contacts look ok under the back cover and no water damage. Any ideas?
I know there are already posts here for this situation, but in all the thread i've read, they have modified the phone and created new issues. This is COMPLETELY STOCK. Running official ICS update.

Try unplugging everything connected to the phone, removing the battery, and then hold the power button for around 15 seconds, then reinsert the battery. Try turning it on again. I'm sure there are other things you can try doing, but this is the first thing that comes in my mind.

Since it stopped turning on have u tried her battery in your phone or your battery in hers? Maybe its just her battery gone bad, which is very common
sent from my NRGized Amaze,

So does her battery run your phone? If it does then its not the battery, return it under warranty, I dont think there's anything else you can do
Tried the trick with pulling the battery and hitting power, no dice. Doesn't matter which battery is in either, it won't turn on. All I want to do at this point is have it on long enough to get any useful data from the internal storage.
And stupidly, I DID NOT opt in for the protection plan thru TMO.

You could try removing the battery, then putting the battery back in, and then plug the usb cable to the computer (so the amaze and the computer is connected to each other), and then try turning it on.
This probably won't turn on the phone, but if you do see something on the computer, something like its trying to install drivers, then you MAY have a chance.

you don't need the protection plan, that will cover you if you lose it/break it etc. You should have 1 yr warranty, so taking it back shouldn't be a problem. How long have you had the phone? Its still not a year old yet..

Lol, not really. He never stated how long he's had it. And if he's had it less than a year (which is the case for everyone since the phone is less than a year old) he can call T-Mobile and they will most likely send him a new one and have him send his back. All I'm saying is that u saying T-Mobile won't do anything for u if u dont have insurance is not true.

And if he's had it less than a year (which is the case for everyone since the phone is less than a year old) he can call T-Mobile and they will most likely send him a new one and have him send his back. All I'm saying is that u saying T-Mobile won't do anything for u if u dont have insurance is not true.

If it's past the 30 days, they'll tell him to call HTC directly if he doesn't have insurance, how I know this? Read past post about phone replacements with no insurance, it's a lucky few who get replacements from T-Mobile despite being past that thirty day period, HTC one year warranty is not upheld by T-Mobile, if anything happens to your device past the thirty days, they always ask or check if you have handset insurance coverage, js since even when I spoke to a rep about replacing the battery on my old amaze, which was merely two months old, he told me since I didn't have insurance on it, I'd have to call HTC directly since it was still under the one year warranty but my sister called about her g2x that didn't have insurance and wasn't even bought from T-Mobile about 6months old and got a replacement in like 5 minutes without any hostile arguments, just a simple my device isn't working and they sent her a replacement, understand where I'm getting at?
Hey guys, just to clarify...we got our phones in May 2012. And I'm pretty much screwed at this point now that my wife let my 3yr old play with it thinking it was totally fried. She threw it and cracked the display. I had a chance at having HTC diagnose it as an internal issue; now they are gonna think it was a user issue.

In my opinion you have two choices here:
1) You could still try to talk to HTC. Explain to them that it was not responding before the screen got cracked and see where it gets you
2) Go to a local repair shop and get the screen/digitizer replaced. It shouldn't cost you more that a 100 bux. Then talk to HTC for the possible internal issue.
Hope that helps!
So today as I was preparing to flash the latest AOKP rom at 90% battery, I accidentally hit reboot to bootloader instead of recovery. No problem, i hit reboot. The screen turned black and a minute later it was still black, so I removed the battery. Nothing turned it on, couldn't access the bootloader and the charging light wouldn't even go on.
That was odd, so i thought maybe it was just still in bootloader mode. I gained access to ADB and it doesn't see the device at all (yes i tried the method explained because of the CWM problem, I also do not have CWM and have had a battery die before and it was able to charge fine) I also tried fastboot and it just sits at "waiting for device"
I called up Verizon support figuring it was the battery and they said i could test it at a store. The rep didn't think it was the battery, but when he tested it said 3/3 times it was increment, so it was bad. Then when he tried a regular battery it didn't work either, so he said the phone was bad.
Now, i called support and they are sending me a new phone and i am going to exchange my extended battery for a good one tomorrow. The thing is the lady on the phone said that as long as there were no hardware defects or unauthorized software than there wouldn't be any charge but if there was then it would be a $200 charge added onto the bill. A $200 charge would be pretty bad.
I would never return my phone if i messed it up actually doing something to the phone but here it didn't... at least not in any way I can think of. I am worried about the charge though. I know they usually don't check them but I had the Juopunut bear h-boot and neo's ICS installed. I am not even sure if it's recoverable at all because from everything i tried it definitely wasn't.
Am i just being silly here?
If they can't even boot the phone, then there is no way that they can tell it was hacked.
Sounds like the only way they'll get the phone booting is to do the manufacturer RUU thing with their special tools, so I'd say you're in the clear.
I've sent a phone back that was S-OFF running CM9. If they check before they JTAG it, I've seen no evidence of it.
I had heard before many times that they never checked, but i was extremely surprised whenever she said that. I wanted to ask some of you guys your opinion as well. I doubt it's recoverable without a full sbf as well, so i should be fine. Thanks!

I had to send mine back for a screen hardware issue. I was still s- on with the bootloader saying relocked and I did not get hit with that charge. As stated before I have heard of people sending back their phones with different ROMs without issue. Good luck

I've returned multiple devices saying relocked in the bootloader. I think Verizon simply doesn't care to be honest.. Hell I've even gotten a replacement phone that was rooted and running custom software. Shows you how muc hattention they pay to the devices they recieve and send out. Hell I've gotten replacements with screen protectors still on them and big ass gashes/scratches on the screen. 100 point inspection my ass.
Same here; my first Rezound was S-OFF, bootloader unlocked when the USB port failed (the unit would charge but couldn't connect to PC). I just factory reset it and sent it back. The folks who refurbish the phones don't even turn 'em on, and if they did, they probably wouldn't know what they were looking at. The things are bulk reflashed, if the motherboards are even retained at all.
Hey everyone. I just bought a Galaxy S4 a couple days ago, and have had no problems with it until this morning. I had it plugged in, and when I woke up, it was extremely hot to the touch, burningly so, and had some weird battery warning of some sort on the screen. I didn't know what else do do, so I immediately unplugged it and took the battery out. Coming from using an HTC Thunderbolt, I've never had a phone get this hot. My hands even still hurt from handling the phone, and now I'm really concerned that there is a problem with it. It's probably worth mentioning that I did root it, but I did nothing else that would cause it to do something like this. I didn't overclock it, I didn't install a custom recovery, and I didn't install any custom ROMs. Besides having root access, the phone is in a stock state as if I just took it out of the box. I haven't turned it on yet as I'm letting it cool off right now, but I really want to know what the heck happened here.
Thanks for any help.
You're not the first person. Hm I want to buy this phone too

Yeah, to my surprise I noticed one of the moderators moved a similar thread from someone over to this section while I was in the middle of posting mine. I wish I would have been able to see it before making mine, but oh well. At least I'm glad it's nothing I did, but I'm both concerned about the heat killing the battery as well as this happening over and over again.
I haven't had this issue at all. I'm rooted and running cwm recovery, but otherwise stock. I also froze several apps (only bloat that was allowed to be disabled natively, so far).
In general, if I were you, I would contact Samsung or Verizon. It may be a defective battery or a defective phone.

I suppose I could bring it back; I do have about 12 more days to return it if I need to. Of course, I'd really rather not, but if everyone here thinks that's the best course of action here, then I suppose I should. Of course, there is the whole I rooted it thing, so yeah.

Don't worry about root. Use SuperSu's unroot feature before returning it. And a factory reset. They'll never know.
Or, if you're really paranoid, use the stock no root odin image and flash it clean.
Get the battery error message to repeat then bring it in with it showing or take a picture of it. A good store will hand you a new one on the spot. They just need to have a documented reason.
Yeah pretty much
I think what I'll do is test the battery life and see if it was damaged at all first. If there's nothing to worry about there, I could just pretend it never happened. Of course, if it decides to go supernova on me again, I'll just unroot it and bring it back. Thanks for the replies guys.
Update:
Considering my battery went down by 8% in just a half hour, I think I can safely consider my battery to be fried. This is just wonderful...
