[Q] Ubuntu Nook recovery method - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I used Adam Outler's Ubuntu program for unbricking a Nook Table. It worked, bring it back from the dead. But now I have a problem. The serial number in the device information (I assume coming from the firmware) does not match the one on the nook itself. Because of this I am not able to register the Nook with B&N. Any suggestions on how to resolve this?
Thanks

I decided to make an Ubuntu restore Sd and later i sucessfully restored my nook to stock 1.4.0. I bypassed registration by holding down volume down and the book button and touching left and right bottom part of screen. This brings up a factory page and if you hold volume down and n and press bottom left again a menu button will appear in green that says bypass registration. Press that and you will get to the home screen. Now you have to download an app and check.usb debugging, etc. rerun indirect script, install cwm recovery.apk etc. and finaly put the cm7 rom onto your sd. Then turn off nook. Hold down n and power 3 sec and when in cmw format cache and devlick cache and then install the cm7 zip on the root of your sd.

[Q] gtab rooting 101

I'm new to Android, my first step was to research hardware and functionality. The choice, you guest it, gtab!
Now of to the good stuff. I ultimately want to root and update my Rom to vegan5.1. So far I have downloaded cwv08, upload downgrade and vegan. The problem is that when I try to restart using power + volume +, I do see the open box screen but then it just loads tnt and resumes boot. There has to be a step I must be missing here. Like I said I'm new to grab and android. Where do I start?
To my understanding, power with volume + without cwm install will run the command file in recovery folder. Preharps u are missing the file, preharps u are not naming the file correctly; too little details provided to tell..
try reading : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
same box with green arrow
I too have installed clockwork. Downgrade the bootloader then try to reboot into clockwork using the + and power. The tab acts like it is going to enter recovery says "Detect recover key press
Booting to recovery image"
Then it goes to that screen with he box with a green down arrow coming out of it and a progress bar. When it finishes it reboots. Still at stock rom, no joy at all.
A couple things I have tried. Copying a new update.zip to the root of the internal memory and the sd card, reboot with and without the sdcard inserted, rebooting normal then trying to get reboot recovery with + and power, copying the cwm update and recovery folder into root. No joy each time it it is the update box. I have not tried holding the recovery keys down in the dark while chanting xda but I think I missed my chance for that working last Friday.... when is the next Friday the 13th?
Thanks for any help or insight anyone can give us.
Bednab,I could not have explained any better. This is exactly what happens with mine. Today I encountered another challenge. My gtab will not connect to my-fy on open iphone. I have to figure this out before my road trip next month.
and there was much rejoicing
I kept at this and finally found a solution. A post pointed me to the answer on androidforums about the command file getting deleted out of the recovery folder after a successful update. I opened the recovery folter on the g tab and it was empty so I opened the one from cwm and edited it to this:
--update_package=SDCARD2:/update.zip
This way it points to my external card where I had a few custom roms. Copied it to the recovery folder in the root of the gtab, reboot into recovery mode and much joy!

[Q] Why can I not boot into recovery?

Background info:
The G Tablet came with 1-1-3389 and I performed the OTA update to 1.1-3588 which went fine. I then rooted it with z4root and that went fine too.
1. I then side loaded ROM Manager and was able to install CWM Recovery and then was able to do a backup of my base ROM.
2. I then copied update-cm-7.0.3-Harmony-signed.zip and gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip to the internal storage on my G Tablet.
3. In ROM Manager I chose to install ROM and I selected the gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip and the tablet rebooted and came up in CWM Recovery. I watched it install 7.0.3 and then it rebooted on its own.
4. The tablet now will only come up to the Viewsonic screen with the birds on it and it just sits there.
5. I press the power button and hold it down to power off the tablet. I then press the + side on the volume rocker and press the power button. I get the "Recovery Key Detected" and then get a screen with a box on it with an arrow pointing down and a task bar underneath then it reboots and comes back up to the bird screen and just sits there.
I have read many threads about this but I am not sure just what my problem is exactly. The fact that I am unable to boot into recovery seems to be the biggest issue.
I have downloaded update-smb_a1002-3588-user.zip and update-smb_a1002-3389-user.zip and have went so far as to unzip the 3588 zip and copied its contents to my microSD card and inserted it and have booted it up while holding the + rocker down again...in another post on the subject I thought I should get "Recovery Image detected" due to the fact the microsd has the following on it...
data folder
META-INF folder
boot.img
bootloader.bin
recovery.img
system.img
Or did i totally misunderstand what I read?
Any ideas?
Maybe others can give a more specific answer, but:
If you're willing to completely reset your tablet, you can use nvFlash to get it back to factory condition.
Just Google:
nvFlash "g tablet" roebeet
And follows the steps that roebeet outlines to get your tablet up and running again. It looks rather complicated, because the instructions could be formatted more clearly, but in reality it's a pretty simple process.
Note that doing this WILL erase ANYTHING you have on there.
thanks for the reply....I do not mind losing anything to get it going again
I am back rocking again...thanks!

[Q] Can't get Clockworklmod to work

I installed clockworkmod per instructions.
When I press the on and volume up buttons I get the appropriate message and then the system boots with the tap n tap (ugh) rom.
I never see a clockworkmod menu
What am I doing wrong?
I am having the same issue!!! I am beyond frustrated right now. I have downgraded to 1.1 and had success during one try and from now on trying to boot into Clockwork it won't let me. All it does is say booting from kernal image and then goes to the splash screen then to the box with the down arrow and continues until it goes right back to the viewsonic birds and boots to the normal rom again.
What the He!! am I doing wrong here? I have already done a factory reset with data wipe...

That is exactly what I was watching and following when this happened to me. Any other ideas? I did however just return the other one after clearing the data and got another one so I am going to try and avoid doing that again.. I am going to try and tread slowly here so I can get things right....
I've had 100% success using the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861950
Go to the first link (Dropbox) and, if Windows, download the 2 zipped files. I will say I bought a Viewsonic G tablet back in December and I had to used the older zipped file in the DEPRECATED folder. My latest Viewsonic G tablet works with the latest files.
Unzip the 2 files, combine into one folder, plug in the USB cable, and reboot by holding the POWER button *and* the Vol- button. You should see the initial boot screen but should quickly see a black screen. Run the .bat file (nvflash_gtablet.bat). If the computer doesn't see the tablet, read the above link on how to make sure you've installed the drivers for the tablet. Once the batch file ends, your tablet will automatically reboot. I would suggest powering off the tablet before it reboots as you can install CW_Mod via NVFlash, which is what I do. Grab CW_Mod 1.1 (not 1.2). Unzip the UPDATE.ZIP file and copy RECOVERY.IMG to the folder where you combined the 2 zipped files from Dropbox. Connect your tablet to your PC via the USB cable. Reboot the tablet again by pressing the POWER button while holding the Vol- button. Same thing--i.e. initial boot screen, then a black screen. Either create a batch file or run the following command (sorry cannot remember the thread where I found this, so I take no credit for this):
nvflash.exe --bl bootloader.bin --download 9 recovery.img
This is a quick process. Once the command finishes. Unplug your USB cable from your tablet and hold down the POWER button to turn off your tablet. You can either power it back on or power it back on and check to make sure CW_Mod is installed (recommended). For this, press the POWER button while holding down the Vol+ key until you see the line of text appear in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
Again, on one of my Viewsonic G tablets, I had to use the zipped file contained in the DEPRECATED folder on the Dropbox. I can't remember what the current files did (think soft-brick).
Good luck. As I've said, I've used these steps so many times as I went through every 1.1 ROM and 1.2 ROM trying to find the one I liked and the steps were perfect. At this point, though, while in CW_Mod, I would go through the process of partitioning your system and formatting stuff.

nook factory restore

This may well have been covered elsewhere, but I tried a quick search and couldn't find it, so figured I'd post anyway. Reseting the Nook Tablet by holding N while you power on forces it in to a reset mode. But, if you actually want to get back to a proper factory fresh unrooted state you easily can take advantage of the "X failed boots" which forces the Factory Restore mode. Start by powering down the Nook, then, this is how I did it:
1) Hold both volume buttons down
2) Press power
After a second or so the intial black screen with copyright info comes on. Keep holding all the buttons until the black copyright info goes off and it looks like it's powered down again.
Repeat at least 8 times.
If anybody knows an easier way please chime in.
the second one is the first time i saw
Quicker factory restore.
If you have root shell access:
At the device shell command line: echo -n '0000' >/bootdata/BootCnt
Unregister device (which will reboot and then do a full factory restore).
Actually, any 4-byte string value of ASCII characters will work, as the resultant value only has to be above a BINARY 8.

Hi Dean. Is there a good app for providing shell access?
Fast Nook Tablet Restore
The fastest and easiest way to do a factory restore is under Settings, Device Info, Erase and Deregister Device. This will remove ALL files one has added and you will able to reregister your tablet.
Correction: Oops! Sorry, this is not correct. See following post.
bsavoy, We are talking about resetting the /system folder to factory (removing gApps, restoring bloatware, removing root, etc) All of those are in the system folder but don't go away when you do erase and deregister. That only wipes /data/

This work for me,
Turn off your NT.
Hold power button + volume up button + n button until your NT turn on and then off. It takes like a couple seconds.
Repeat 7 more times.
When you turn your NT on the 9th time (without holding other button), your NT will restored with factory software and removing root.

I turned off the nook, and turned it back one while holding down the 'N' button and power at the same time. Only have to do it once.

That method only clear the /data folder. You still have root.
The hard reset method clear both /data and /system folders, removing root. This method is for when you messed up your NT badly.
Bump because so many people still don't know how to do full factory restore.
When full factory restore is done properly, your NT will restore automatically. No pressing n button or asking you steps. Not to be confused with factory reset. Factory reset will prompt you to follow steps on screen.
Instruction from BN tech support
This is what I got when I chatted with a BN tech support. Copy-pasted verbatim.
Please follow the steps below to hard reset your NOOK Tablet. Please note that a hard reset de-registers your device as well as erases all local content such as contacts, sideloaded documents, personal information, 4 digit passcodes, etc. It is recommended that you backup any sideloaded material before continuing.
1. Hold the power button down for 10 seconds until the NOOK Tablet is powered off, ignoring the "Power off" prompt.
2. After Your NOOK Tablet is powered off, kindly press the home key and the power button until the "Read Forever" logo disappears. Once disappeared release the buttons immediately.
3. If successful, a grey NOOK Logo will appear and the screen will refresh momentarily and flash yellow. A prompt will appear asking if you would like to perform a “Factory Reset,” Tap the "NOOK Home key" to confirm. Tap the"Home key" again to begin the process.
4. After a few minutes your device will reset and re-install all necessary software. Once completed, you will have to register the device again.
Your eBooks, magazines, newspapers and applications are saved on your online library. You can download them again after registering the device. By the way, you need to have a Wi-Fi connection to register it again.

magic SD card doesn't work
I've tried the acclaim_update with 4GB, 8GB and 32FGB Sandisk microSD cards after unmounting and erasing them on the nook. Nothing happens. I've done factory restores with the Volume+Power button technique and the nook does reset but the system remains at 1.4.1. I've done it a bunch of times to no avail and now my nook is unrooted but I can't reroot it and block the upgrades from B&N. Anyone else having the same problem. And is there a fix for me?
---------- Post added at 04:34 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:21 PM ----------
Also tried the reset method above - power key for 10 sec, the power plus home buttons. Again a factory reset but when I've gone through the setup process, I still have 1.4.1.
I have the same problem as lessilb. I do a factory restore and I'm still at 1.4.1. I try the Acclaim method on a 16GB SANDISK microSD and it ignores the microSD. I had root before Christmas but now I'm stuck on 1.4.1 until I find a microSD that will work. My original understanding was that I should always be able to factory restore back to 1.4.0 but that doesn't seem to be the case.
I posted the [How-to] Quick Access to Nook Tablet's FACTORY RESET Screen for this type of issue. Following that guide will get you back to stock and the home key issue is explained as well.
Good luck.
I tried the 8 time reboot and when power on the 9 time it takes me CWM recovery mode. When I reboot NT now it takes me to n screen with read forever witha white background. I am stuck there forever. Can anyone help.

Keyboard and "N" Button not work after reboot

I have follow the guide of indirect and my nook tablet is rooted, but when i reboot after that i choose "adw launcher", the keyboard is disappeared and central action button of device does not work.
How can i restore keyboard? and central nook button?
Most people have to do a factory restore to get the N button working again. I had to and it fixed the problem
Ok, i have follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20614314&postcount=14, but the problem remains no keyboard and N button..
I can't register my product... Now I'm stuck to setup device....HELP!!!
I had the N button problem after using snowball mod root method.
N button is part of system_ui.apk. There's a version floating around which makes it act like a home button instead of redirecting to another launcher. This may already be in your rooting package...not sure since I haven't had to root in a few weeks.
It's possible you can get it installed with adb, but I ended up doing a restore. Then I replaced the one in my rooting package (I used snowball mod), and re-rooted.
As for your keyboard issue, I have no idea.
But now i'm stuck in register product and i can't go to the home for debugging mode... how can i re-root device??

Get the acclaim_update.zip and/or attempt 8 failed boots and it will restore to factory. To do a failed boot:
1) Completely power off the nook.
2) hold down both volume buttons and the power button. Hold these until the copyright notice comes up then the device powers off again.
3) Repeat 7 times.
4) Power on the nook. It will restore completely.
There's also the acclaim_update.zip file method. Power down the nook, get the file and put it on the root of an SD card. WHen you power up it will restore to stock.

Ok XD acclaim_update method it worked. Thanks howcansheslap i have follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402190
There is a method for rooted nook from sd card in automatic?
I had to do both methods to get fully back to stock. When I only did the 8 failed boot method, it seemed that it didn't fully restore. It resulted in the stock B&N ui and apps, but the version was still 1.4.1. So it makes me think the 1.4.1 patch gets applied to the restore image.
I'm pretty sure the SD card method (acclaim_update) will be required for you to completely restore to stock.

Nope, not yet. They're really close though.
Perfect!! Thanks
Another Option!!!!
i have customized my nook tablet quite a bit and didn't want to do a factory restore to get the n key functioning. so i followed this tutorial (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464). i downloaded the file "ButtonRemapper v0_2.4.1.apk" directly on the tablet and configured the 102 button with the following:
Action : Back
State: Wake
rebooted the tablet and voila! although this doesn't get you immediately to the homescreen, it definitely with get you there eventually without the use of button savior.
