Words with Friends + CM9 - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, I am hearing the same thing from a lot of people:
Atrix 4G + CM9 = Words with Friends crashes.
Apparently this is a Kernel issue. Is there a Kernel that does not cause Words with Friends to crash?

Nothing yet. Only solutions are playing it on a laptop, desktop, tablet, CM7 or other ROM, or not play it all.

This totally sucks. Yesterday, I will still on Android 2.2. Words with Friends sees more clock time with me than any non-phone related app.
If there is a resolution... please oh please someone message me.

Trust me. I'm a big fan/user of words with friends as well. It's either CM9 or words w/ friends. Take your pick.

I know personal mileage may vary but I'm currently running turl's v8 CM9 with the acerbix kernel and have very few crashes or lockups with WWF. Moore often than not it is slow when switching between the game board and the ads and back, but it usually comes back just fine. I tried the v8 kernel and faux's kernel, but they didn't work.

I can also vouch for the acerbix kernel making it livable.

When I tried acerbix's kernel I was getting plenty of FCs. I've been on Jokersax's builds though, could it be that turl's with acerbix kernel can run it but joker's can't?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App

I haven't yet tried a jokersax ROM so someone else will have to chime in on that. He's supposed to have an update soon, including a kernel update, so I may switch over and try when that release drops.

Words also wants to crash on my cm7. However, when the force close screen comes up, I choose to wait and usually it'll work for a while before crashing again.

I honestly have the timing down now. There are only two ways its crashes and I typically have to pull the battery because of it. The first like everyone says is the transition to the Ad screen after making a play (it is only after the play has been sent to the Server so this is no big deal.) The second is in the Chat window of a game that will crash if you try to hit back. I found by hitting Home within a second or two of the Ad coming up you can force the app closed and reopen it. It takes a few seconds but not much more time it takes for the ad to go away.

Makes me wonder what in the world WWF is doing that makes the kernel go so crazy. Every other game that I've put on turl v8 seems to perform flawlessly--2D and 3D games alike.

Can someone link me to acerbix's kernel? been searching around, but cant find it.
TIA

[Q] CM7 Gingerbread Vibrant bugs

What are the known bugs with the CM7 Gingerbread ROM for the Vibrant?
I'm considering rooting and flashing my Vibrant to get better speed, but I don't know which ROM is the best for me. I've read that CM7 is popular.
Currently only one. Battery. Batter life will be around 30-40% shorter than on Froyo ROMs. Except...if you were getting 23 hours on a charge to be getting around 16.
He's right. Just battery. I used to have all sorts of problems with ginger, but it was either user error or I was using very beta-builds. Now 2.3.4 is incredibly stable with just a lil bit more battery drain than you are used to. My suggestion: try out trigger redux. Its a fantastic daily driver.

Where did you get the 2.3.4? I have the same phone as you with Firmware version 2.2, baseband version T959UVKA6, Kernel version 2.2.32.9 and Build number Froyo.UVKA6. A friend of mine put this on my phone and I don't really understand how it all works. Will 2.3.4 give me anything more?

Yeh but what more will this give me than what I have now?
For one. Snappier browser. Secondly, I was able to install the nvidia tegra drivers to be able to play games like samurai 2 vengeance. Oh, and you get the useless, yet sought out tv off animation. And until today, netflix [its available for froyo now]. You can google the rest. Seriously, the whole UI is snappier than bionix or trigger ever was. Its awesome how quick it really is.

I'd suggest the CM7 nightly builds. Cyanogenmod 7 is about as good as it gets which is why it is on so many devices.
The only bug your going to notice is that on some of the Gingerbread roms the GPS may not be working, although there is a fix which allows you to lock GPS everytime within 30 seconds literally...
As far as battery life, with CM7 I was lucky to get about 8-10 hours on medium usage, but after I switched out the stock kernel for Glitch's kernel i'm doing a full day, overclocked to 1300mhz undervolted daily.... and it runs beautifully.

hi,can you post a link,i don`t know how to change kernel for Cyanogenmod 7(for vibrant please),for a while i used this rom,and abandoned it because of poor battery life(i have flashed bionix 1.3.1)
Thanks
a couple of bugs i personally had when I was on the latest nightly build were:
Random Reboots: the phone just randomly rebooted when it felt like it wanted to :/ then I saw one of the specific reboots it happened when i tried to put the phone to sleep while entering text it rebooted for no reason i was able to succesfully duplicate this bug many times
Horrible performace: i wasn't every able to play this 720p mkv file i had on the CM7 rom apparently because gingerbread doesn't have hardware acceleration :/ or CM7 for vibrant didn't at least.
Now im testing froyo roms like the bionix 1.31 and the project V and they don't have any of those bugs

Running CM7 Trigger Redux build 14 and I've only run into two bugs that could be my device, and one that's a known CM7 issue:
Low 3D framerate issues
Text written in landscape dissapears from fields when the phone is rotated to portait mode (May be limited to the Wells Fargo app)
SD cards do not re-mount in Android after being mounted to a PC unless the USB cable is disconnected and reconnected after turning off USB mounting
Battery is fixed, see sig.

I am using the one A18O has posted. There are pretty much daily updates and a lot of work from the other members in the thread.
Here is a link to the one I am talking about for sure.
The only issue I have had is that it does not do a mediascan on boot, so there is no accessing music from SD. Other than that, pretty stable so far and very few complaints by me. Hell, even the camera app loads.
You have no many choices
As for now you have no many choices: or based on Phothon -http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444637 - which according to replies rather stable or Atrix CM9 pure test build - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1403372

Just download "rescan media" from the market - allows you to force a media scan at any time.
Right now the CM9 ROMS are in alpha stage so things like camera, video playback, and gapps don't work quite right yet.
I'd wait a few months before going into CM9 if I were you.
I'd recommend either Gingermod, or Neutrino Roms for the time being. They're pretty good.
By the way Neutrino developed hinted that there is a possibility for Neutrino CM9. Will be greate

Temple Run Performance

Hey guys,
Downloaded temple run today, was so pumped until I played it and realized that touch swiping wasnt accurate (i'd swipe left and would just continue and fall ij water) and the game was a little choppy. Running Turl's v9 CM9, btw. Any of you guys experience similar issues?

Yup. Its a touch issue with the CM9 ROMs.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA
I'm on stock Gingerbread and rooted. Temple Run plays flawlessly on my Atrix. No lagging at all. Control is also better/more accurate on my Atrix than on my Kindle Fire, HTC EVO View 4G tablet, or my mother-in-law's HTC phone (Incredible?). Haven't tried it yet on my wife's iPhone 4 or iPad 2 though. But on Android, I'm very happy with how it runs on my Atrix. Now, if I could just get past 50,000 points
I'm on cm7 and it runs perfectly with no issues. I've been playing it all day non stop.
i felt a little not smooth as i run it on ios devices.btw,i'm running stock gb rom.
so from what i'm reading here, I guess it's safe to assume that it's an issue with cm9 drivers.
well this sucks because I love Temple Run, but dont think i will b going back to GB for temple run....

As far as I could understand, the bug with CM9 is not only for the Atrix, but for all the devices that are running an ICS version, it has something to do with drivers or some other lie...
no problems on my jokersax cm9 atrix.
EDIT:
actually. yeah. it has problems with touch. doesn't ever go the right way.

Has anyone tried the new alpha Jelly Bean 0.01? From the beginning and after having trouble with inofficial cm9 nightlies I always used his cm9 alpha. How is the stability of his cm10 alpha compared to cm9 alpha? Or compared to CM9 inofficial nightlies?

You'd better wait a while. If you read the first post of the CM10 post, you'll see what works and what doesn't. CM9 is much more stable at the moment.
The nightly CM9 builds have had a lot of problems with moving to the new kernel and trying to support both NT SKUs. If you want something newer than CM7 but still pretty stable, CM9 0.05.1 by chrmhoffmann is pretty good. It's highly functional and I have never had a SOD or random reboot. From all the chatter, it looks like CM10 is making rapid progress, probably thanks to a lot of the hard work put into CM9 carrying forward. Right now, I'd just remind everyone that patience is a virtue and good things take time.
@solar plexus
Hi solar plexus
you are right, the first post sounds scary but so did the first post of cm9 alpha by chwrmhoffmann but it worked really well from the beginning as far as I remember But as stated in the next post it was not based on kernel 3.x. Has anyone really tried the cm10 0.01 out? I can't because I'm currently on hollyday.
Hi strouperman
you are right I'm as well using this 0.05 alpha version by Chris Hoffmann. It works great from the beginning even if the first post was as scary as the one for the cm10.
But has anyone tried the cm 10 alpha 0.01 out? at the moment I can't because I'm on hollyday.

I briefly tried out the first posted build of JB (after backing up my system, of course). Despite the expected issues alpha, it seemed surprisingly functional. The issue I noticed off the bat was that it defaulted to phone UI (which I think is balls ugly on a tablet). I assume that this can be fixed by adjusting the DPI. The rotation issue was bad, but I hear that is already been fixed. The part that makes me want to wait until this is further along is mostly losing the awesome CM9 settings I've grown to love.
P.S. - For me this build operated longer without a random reboot than the last CM9 nightly I tried about 2 weeks ago. I messed around with it for about an hour and didn't have any reboots, which is about 58 minutes longer than the nightly. I have to wonder if some component to the 3.0 kernel that is deactivated for JB is the major culprit for the random reboots.
thanks for this overview I appreciate this very much. So I will trie it out after my hollyday. I hope it will soon be as stable as the cm9 0.05.
regards Martin

Had one when I first loaded it. So I set the display time out to 30min and used wake lock. After that the only thing was I had to manually reboot it every time my kid was playing games on it for awhile. The screen would go blank and the backlight would stay on.
Had the same issue here. I'll patiently wait for the good work and switch when the time is right.
Bill
Version .02 works really well . It only reboots if you leave alone for awhile and unlock it now. And one while trying to make a tegra 3 app work. But Google now works like a charm, and most apps work, and less apps are restricted in the market now. Only the phone ui part sucks. Basically no landscape at home screen or searching through apps. Besides that annoyance I've been using it as my daily for 2 days now with few problems.

Hmm.. I've just left my WiFi on (set to never turn off during sleep) and the screen set to 30 minutes and haven't had the black screen in a a few days.. Granted not really any heavy use atm though, just xda, eBay, and some other stuff
Edit: I guess JB didn't like me saying that... was going to edit something and then black screen
I attempted to use the newboot.zip used previously for the CM9 versions that enabled the 8gb NT to use the ROM, and was met with the black screen with the two androids on it (to show that its the newboot)... but it would not proceed any further than that... i was hopeful, but i'm sure that someone eventually will come up with a solution to allow 8gb users to partake in the jellybean goodness as well
... EDIT!:
After wiping the data/cache and dalvik, reflashing JUST chrwmhoffmann's CM10 0.02 and Gapps, i thought it was giving me an error... after about 5 minutes at the boot logo, it rebooted... and then booted into the google account setup!... keep in mind, this is on an 8GB Nook Tablet. I will post screenshots when i get back home tonight
Here are the images for the boot and settings from my above post

Then forget about both ICS and JB and go with GB. Any variant will do.
ICS/JB ROMs are just too unfinished yet to be a reliable daily driver, IMO. People are woking hard on them though, so there is no doubt they will one day become as reliable as good old GB.
Agreed.

This is a very accurate summary of where we stand. I'm still running Nottachtrix 1.3.1 even though Nottach left the Atrix over a month ago, just because everything works on it. Bluetooth, wifi, HWA, Ubuntop, all cameras, and even a decent selection of themes for both android and linux.
But with the new leak libs, there is sure to be a fantastic CM9/10 ROM that takes advantage of them. We just have to be patient.
Hi
If you're not using thoroughly your phone, the CM10 form Epinter is now reliable enough for a daily use.
I was using CM7 since months, and after trying CM10 last week, i'm still using it and have found no real limitations for a basic usage.
I'd recommend you to keep a GB based rom if you want to have the most reliable system and if video recording is a primary need for you.
Just my $.02: I don't even use the "latest" GB 2.3.7 ROM: I've returned to Neutrino 2.6 EE (the latest is 2.91 at this writing). CM 7.2 RC1 was the most stable + efficient ROM from the CM gurus for my Atrix. I charge my phone once every two or three days too.
Think about driving a car that everyone laughs at that's never needing to go to the shop. Gits ya there, gits ya back, reliably and without anyone really paying attention to it, and it just goes and goes and holds its own against everyone else. Newest doesn't always mean best; trustworthiness does.
Epinter's CM10 worked OK for me despite the few well known bugs.
You might give the brand new AtrICS ROM a shot. It's hard to believe that it could already be as stable as it claims to be, but with working hardware acceleration, it should have some bugs fixed as compared to CM10.

I switched from epinter's CM10 to AtrICS today and found it to be a fairly usable. You trade some features for others.
I prefer the interface of CM10 to AtrICS, but AtrICS feels really snappy thanks to the HWA. I'll probably get used to ICS after a while. The Camera works well, but, like others I noticed that after switching from the back camera to the front, there was some corruption on the right side of the screen. Going into Camera Settings and unchecking then rechecking the Widescreen box fixes this. There are problems with the unlock screen of AtrICS; it can be slow to appear when you press the power button and I have seen the screen turn on for a split second before turning right back off. If you let the phone go into a deep sleep, you may see a black screen for a minute, in my case the unlock screen did eventually appear. I've had one reboot right after closing a bunch of apps running in the background then trying to open a browser.
WiFi works great with AtrICS and mobile data feels faster than I remember.
My mobile gone hot after a few minute use AtrICS, and experienced network lost. The phone also hot with epinter 's version.
Restored TopSmart1.3. GB has the stablity I trust.
