[Q] How to root a Samsung Galaxy S2 (Vodafone Australia) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well basically I been looking around the whole forum for insecure and secure DUKJ1 files and there all outdated because the hosting site went down.
My phones stats:
Android: 2.3.5
Baseband Version: I9100TDUKJ1
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100TDUKJ1-CL687461 [email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.DUKJ1
is it possible to root my phone?
Also I got told to use this CF-Root-SGS2_XW_LUX_KJ1-v5.0-CWM5, is that the best at the moment or is there better?
Thank you.

Yes, use the KJ1 CFRoot kernel & follow the flashing instructions in that thread. As Chainfire hosts his own files, you won't have any problems downloading this kernel.

Wow I thought it would have been heaps more technical then that, I also ordered a USB Jig from ebay just incase. Thanks mate I really appreciate it.

Nah, pretty easy. 10 steps or so, follow those to the letter & you shouldn't have any probs & will have a rooted phone in a few minutes.
Good move getting a jig early in the piece too Makes removing the yellow boot triangle easy (you don't have to fiddle around & flash stock kernels, etc, etc) & if you ever need to send the phone in for warranty service you can reset the flash counter in seconds.
No worries Post in here if you have any dramas.

The root was fine, but one quick question is it possible to remove preinstalled apps off my phone? There pretty annoying..

Good. Glad the root went smoothly
Yep. You need to get an app like Titanium Pro or Gemini App Manager from the Market (there are others both free & paid). These apps enable you to freeze (which I recommend) or uninstall apps you don't want/like.
This thread is a good one which will give you an idea of what's safe to freeze/remove and what isn't. There should also be a link to a spreadsheet of same somewhere in that thread as well.
Edit to add - This thread is also a good reference for AU SGS2 users.

There is an app called quarantine or something like that which will also let you "freeze" bloatware apps. It's free but I recommend buying titanium backup.

Hey guys,
I'm a Vodafone user in Australia and played around with my Galaxy s2 (in terms of rooting etc.) when I first got it. Since then, I decided it did what I needed it to do and haven't touched it. I have completely forgotten how this all works, so a quick reminder on where to download kernels/updates would be great! Are we still using Odin??
Here is my info:
Model: GT-I9100T
Android version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: I9100TDUKF2
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKF3-CL253204
[email protected] #2
Build number: GINGERBREAD.DUKF2
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

wont restart
phone wont restart after flashing with odin3, any ideas?
Will reboot until Samsung logo and yellow triangle appear but then shows a blank screen
i can place the phone back into downloading mode but that is about it.
Phone is DUKj1
flashed using CF Root as in this thread.

Boot into recovery (turn phone off, hold power/home/volume up), do a wipe/factory reset). If you can't do that, have a look at the Bootloop thread. If you can't get into recovery, your best bet would be to flash a stock rom & start with a clean slate. If you do go down that path, get the PC version of Checkfus (search for it on here/Google) & download the latest Voda stock ICS rom.

First attempted wipe/factory reset and reboot, problem still remained.
Downloaded VillainROM-SGS2-V1.1.tar.md5 and used Odin3 to reflash, phone rebooted and works:good:, although now showing VillainROM 1.1 under build instead of breadcrumb, what are you thoughts about this?
i still want to root this phone, any ideas?

Um... downloading and installing VillianRom 1.1 made your build show VillainROM 1.1 instead of breadcrumb? Seriously? Of course it will show the version of what you flashed. And what is breadcrumb?
Also, VillianROM is pre-rooted, I believe.

My phone, also Samsung Galaxy S2 with Vodafone Australia, was originally a DUKJ1 but has been updated to the new 4.1.2 android via vodafone's official OTA updates. this has subsequently killed my GPS. I have found a solution to fix the GPS, but it requires me to root my phone (http://www.notaboutthenumbers.com/2012/01/19/samsung-galaxy-s2-gps-problem-solved/). Of course, I did not realise my GPS was broken until i went on an interstate trip this weekend - so, major inconvenience/stress there that should never have happened (modern technology, eh?).
I am confident rooting will be ok, but now that my phone has been updated, it is no longer DUKJ1, it is now LS3 and i cannot find a kernel for it (in neither XDA, Google, nor http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399). Android enthusiasts page had this to say to someone in a situation like mine: http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...-galaxy-s2-with-unconventional-kernel-version (summary: just use a 'many' method - which would be??).
Any ideas? Can i still use the DUKJ1 file, or is the difference between different versions of firmware like the difference between, say, windows XP and Vista. in essence, will it brick my phone to use DUKJ1? Is there a secret trick for finding the right kernel to download? edit: just saw this, can i use it? is it generic (a 'many' method)? > http://www.gokhanmoral.com/?cat=5 | http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOaTscV92gU)
Thanks.

Yes. That version of Siyah should work just fine with the Android version you're currently running.

Awesome! thanks for the quick reply. Just done it (as per the sihay youtube video) and it is rooted
Now to try the GPS fix.... which is a no-go, unfortunately. I have come across the same issue as other users of that app, which is that both the 'enable' and 'disable' of static navigation are both greyed out and the model number is not detected by the app (even though mine is the same as in the market screenshots!)
Well, at least i have made the plunge into rooted S2. hopefully i can find another GPS solution soon.
Thanks!

You're welcome
There's many 'GPS fixes' on here, as to whether they work or not, I can't say as I've never had problems with it. However, this thread a couple of months back looked promising & might be a starting point.

[Q] PANIC!! Galaxy S2 ICS Update Gone Wrong

I Downloaded and installed the ICS update last night and have been living in hell since. It doesn't have the soft buttons it is supposed to, so navigating through everything is an absolute nightmare! I want to go back to my standard rooted phone. But I have followed MANY, MANY guides, and it will not work. I have downloaded 10 different ROMS and FIRMWARES today and Flashed OVER AND OVER. I am completely stuck and NEED help please.
I have used Recovery to try and install new Roms, Used Odin as well, and I get problems EVERY time. It will reboot, load, and as soon as the "Touch the Android to Begin" logo comes up, It starts having process failures popping up over and over, preventing me from being able to do anything. Forcing me to reflash to ICS again.
Can someone please explain the process to take it back to stock so I can re-root it?
Did you wipe everything when you installed the roms? Data, cache, Dalvik?
Find stock roms here for odin:

Just make sure to download and install the correct rom depending on which SGSII you have.

first install stock rom from this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
then download this rom (i think this is best ICS Rom) and install it with CMW(you should copy the rom inside your internal SD) then full wipe your phone and install rom .

I thought my phone was bricked but came across SOOOO many threads saying if your phone would load into a ROM it is most certainly NOT BRICKED, leading a n00b such as myself to believe I needed to search for a different issue. Always helps to know what you are looking FOR when searching. This looks awesome. I will try it right away and get back to you with an update as to whether this fixes it.

Phistachio - I followed your link, but when you get to the following step:
4) Download the necessary files : the Kernel, the Recovery Package and the Bootloader (it's the old one, which you can easily use a USB JIG to reset the counter and remove the yellow triangle when having a custom kernel or OS),
The link provided for the Recover Package is a Hotfile.com link, and the Archive that it downloads is PASSWORD PROTECTED, and there is no mention of a password anywhere on the page you provided, nor on the hotfile.com page.

Zylor, Thanks for the overt Negativity in your post. I was making sure we were clear, not complaining. I wasn't aware that telling someone that they have provided a great resource was "complaining". And when the OP AND the page he sends you to VERY CLEARLY say ONLY USE THE CORRECT VERSION, far be it for me to magically know that I can grab any random version from CHINA or wherever and have it work on my US ATT GS2. Sorry for trying to follow instructions and avoid a potential brick. But thanks for being a hateful Troll.

You have the AT&T device.
Your correct forum is at http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1301
Not sure from the details supplied, but have youtried AT&T specific Roms?
Over at this site http://galaxys2root.com/category/att-galaxy-s2-roms/ (Thanks to Max) they have quite a few to try. And make sure you do a complete wipe before you flash one of them ie, factory reset, clear cache then advanced delvik cache and battery stats and then install from zip.
Hope this helps.
I followed all the instructions, and my phone rebooted into the ROM. But it is not stock. My Back and Search buttons still do not work, and the Recovery is 3e, so I cant use the Recovery function because my model (US AT&T) doesn't have the OK button. Since I cant get it to take a screenshot, i'll list the info below:
Android Version: 2.3.5
Baseband Version: I9100XXKI3
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKI3-CL577579 [email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XXKI3
I just want to get it back to AT&T Stock, or a WORKING 2.3.6. But as it stands, It doesnt work properly, because my Back Button does not work, nor my Search button.
All Guidance is appreciated. I want to get back to the Stock Bootloader, not the ICS Bootloader
P.S. - I DID SEARCH FOR THIS INFO. When I did, I came up with threads like:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1317372
- Turns out it only works on the CHINESE SGS2.

Bob!! Thats exactly what I want to do. But I cant, because the Recovery installed on my phone wont let me do anything because I dont have the OK button on my phone. I tried the power button and everything else, I cannot make selections in Recovery 3e, so the only way to get out of it is to pull the battery.
Xfile if your sticker says at&t sgh-i777 theres a complete forum dedicated to that model here in xda. Better pop in there and find more help.
They also have model specific roms over there and surely they should work. Wannit to post the link but not sure how to from the xda app yet.

No Sweat. I'm just trying to follow instructions and get this fixed ASAP. I did flash the bootloader mentioned, with no errors in Odin, but it still loads with the new galaxy S logo animation instead of the old GT-I9100 Logo with the Yellow Exclamation point. AND, I still have no use of the Back and Search buttons, functionality that is removed in the new ICS. What am I doing wrong? I cannot seem to get my phone back to Stock Android.

[Q] Are there Rooting options?

Dear all,
I'm having a connectivity problem with my Samsung Galaxy SII and I think I tried everything in all combinations possible that I could find in many many forums (it charges, but is not recognized. I tried: 3 different cables, 2 computers xp/w7, modem/pda code, 100x uninstalling kies and still no connection, no connection with ODIN, updating drivers, removing sd-card, debug mode on/off, mass storage, cleaning USBport with alcohol). Do you know any other options that I might try, or can I just assume my USB port is dead?
Anyway, my real question is the next. Is it possible to root the device in a way without using the USB cable? My from booting from SD-Card or so? I would like this in order to be able to update the firmware in the future with on-device apps, considering the USB-port is dead. For all the options I found in other forums, like ABD Wifi, Mobile ODIN and CWM, you need root on forehand.
It would be great if you could give me some suggestions! Thanks
Btw, I'm nowhere near a service point, and at this point would like to keep the phone with me, since it's working fine besides this problem
Have you installed the Samsung USB driver?

I don't want to jump to the wrong conclusion here.. but have you actually put your phone into download mode for this? ie starting from off.. hold vol down + home button, power on whilst still holding the buttons.
Maybe SuperOneClick ? Don't ask me the how/why/in's & out's of it as I've never used it. Search for it on here.
As far as I know, there is no way to root without using a computer connected via USB.
If the USB port is faulty, and you on stock, which it sounds like you are, get Samsung to repair it.

If your phone is playing up/USB appears cactus and you're still running stock firmware/haven't rooted it/messed around with it in any way, why tempt fate ? Return it for warranty service/replacement, and when you get it back & know everything's working, then you can flash whatever rom/kernel you want or root the phone.
Last thing you want to do is root it or flash non-stock firmware & then have the phone die on you & be unable to go back to stock. Goodbye warranty.
You mean ODIN does not recognize your device? If so, make sure KIES is not running at the back. Did you updated KIES? Maybe you can go to previous version...

Maybe this can help - certainly looks like the real deal.
Seems to work for the ICS ROM mentioned in the thread, you should be able to download all required files via the phone, you have root, and then flash whichever ROM you like.
Thanks all for the comments!

I flashed it with this non-stock firmware. I don't have any warrenty, since I'll just have to pay for the repairs. Probably, they'll use a "water damage" argument for my faulty usb-port, as I read in many other forums.

Root S2 I9100GDDKL1 (India)
Hi,
I would like to root my S2 to install Titanium Backup and setCPU to have better control over my phone (remove bloatware, control battery and performance and such). Not looking to install a custom ROM at the moment.
My handset specs are:
Baseband version: I9100GDDKL1
Running: Android version 2.3.6
Build number: Gingerbread.XWLA1
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7 [email protected]#2
I have been searching for an insecure and original PDA that matches the above to flash my device but have not been successful so far.
I initially started off attempting to Root using DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su but was unsuccessful as my PC was not recognizing my phone.
I hope someone can help. BTW I am a Noob.
This link is to a "G" model kernel flashable via Odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506954
Just make sure you only flash items for the I9100G and not the I9100 international version.
Have fun.

Thanks a bunch
Thanks yall,
The root worked like a charm. I was able to install all the root tools that I required and good to go now.
I used Odin ver 1.85 and flashed superatmos v.3.0 kernel. I then rooted the device using superoneclick (I could not get the S2 Root to work for some reason - It kept saying that the device was not connected)
Next steps:
Plannning to flash the original kernel back to remove the warning sign on startup - Any advice?
I am sold on the merits of rooting. The flexibility is amazing.
P.S. Could someone help me with re-flashing the original kernel? I tried searching for it over the net but could not locate anything similar.

buttons MENU and BACK ar not illuminated

Hi,
Sorry if I don't write correctly in english.
I never had an Android smartphone and I just bought to someone a Galaxy S2 with an operator customization.
I notice that the two sensitives buttons MENU and BACK (at the left and at the right of the HOME button) are not illuminated but they was 2 days ago.
They work perfectly but I never see the white light.
Because I'm a new Android user I don't really know if it's a customization or not so I decide to flash the S2 with a stock ROM but the problem is still here
Here is the details of the smartphone:
Android: 4.0.3
Baseband: I9100XXKPA
Kernel: 3.0.15-I9100XXKPA-CL51925 [email protected] #3
Version: ICS.XXKPA
A guess its whatever customization has been made to the phone .
No ICS release for SGS2 what has been flashed on the phone .
...................................
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery no recovery install CWM and root kernel
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .

Thank you for reply
But I don't understand everything :/
You say that I should not install a version 4 because this is an ICS ROM and there is no official ICS ROM, is that correct?
Whatever, I will do what you're suggesting to me installing this ROM:
I9100XXKL1 2.3.6

I tried to flash with a STOCK ROM 2.3.6 and there is a new problem...
Windows doesn't recognize my phone at all!
I tried everything: install Kies, uninstall and install again, nothing...
I did the same with the drivers and again with the version we can find on the Web, nothing...
I can't see the phone in the ODIN MODE either
I'm totally lost, is there a way to flash completely from the micro SD card?

Yep... :/ I activate the "always on" option (or something like that) and nothing...
I tried to flash in recovery mode with a Cyanogen file:
"update-cm-7.1.0-GalaxyS2-signed.zip" for Galaxy S2
I copied this file on the SD and I have a KERNEL PANIC, UPLOAD MODE :/
There is also this line in red:
RST_STAT = 0x20000000
Edit: The phone boot normally but I still can't see it on W7 and the buttons MENU and BACK are still not illuminated :/
I have a suggestion...
Please read a few posts and a lot of Howtos and FAQs. You're just messing with the phone without any clear knowledge and you'll brick it sooner or later so spare yourself a trip to the nearest service center and !stop flashing random files!.
Now for my next suggestion. Get Odin to run and/or use mobile Odin and quickly flash your stock rom. You have 15 minutes to refund and it should be plenty of time to get your phone back to stock. Then check if the lights are working and go return the phone if they still don't work.

I read a lot so now I'm testing what people with more experience than me are suggesting to me, I don't choose files randomly.

Right. Now that you have flashed CM7 with the new bootloader, there is no choice but to re-install a stock Gingerbread firmware (or bootloader IIRC) through Odin.
Your original button backlight problem was probably with the extremely old ICS leak that you installed.

Not so old! ^^
Do you know if the I9100XXLPH (09/02/2012) is stable?
I have the same issue; the buttons are not responding and light is off even if I set it to always light.
I have another issue which is the speaker doesn't work too!
Is there a way to find out the original soft using the phone IMEI or SN?
Thanks :good:

Start off with finding out what model phone you have. It's on the label under the battery.

Bricked my phone. help? maybe? please?

So, today I updated my phone to ICS and rooted my phone and just like a little kid i started playing with things and long story short I'm pretty sure I bricked it. I think what happened just before I think it bricked is that I was downloading and installing a ROM from ROM Manager. It went through the whole start up process(asking for gmail for syncing and all that nonsense) and when i tried to download another app from the google store i got a "error with purchasing" or something like that so i restored all the info and stuff i had on ROM manager and titanium back up and tried it again. no luck. I tried going for factory reset but it didn't work(all three ways). So i panicked and went to superuser and clicked the unroot choice. Really stupid choice since now i can't use any of the apps to get into bootload. Now I can't get to recovery, bootload, or any other of those things even with hardware.
So in summary here are the symptoms:
1. can't get into any other modes (recovery, bootload, etc.)
2. Get the error "Error processing purchase.[DF-BPA-13]" when trying to download something off google play.
3. Charges extremely Slow.
4. Phone works normally. goes through normal boot. I can text, browse, do all standard functions.
5. When turning off the phone it gets hung up at goodbye.
6. Can't perform hard resets.
More information:
Model Number: SGH-T989
Android Version: 4.03
Please Help! I'm begging you! and if you need more information just let me know. and one thought I would have in fixing it is using a USB jig. But i wouldn't know what to do once I got back into the other modes.
you can search how to fix it here on xda, but maybe this will give you a lead http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1805474
hope you get it fixed!
Right well there is 2 things you can do:
1) use a USB jig and get into download mode, and then flash a stock ROM
2) Do an adb restart into recovery using android SDK
Let me know if it work?

This is a forum for the international version, i9100. Your device T989 is a completely different device and has its own forum.

Yes i have but still does nothing after reboot.
Get a root file explorer from market and see if there was an automated back up made whilst previous owner was flashing roms/kernels. You may be lucky, otherwise it's a paid repair at a service centre

I don't think it will as the efs folder is unique to the handset not the ROM installed. There are few threads offering fixes with mixed results. Search and try them. All the best.

I saw your other thread asking for a copy of this. This is ancient as far as firmwares go, you've got pretty much zero chance of getting your hands on it unless someone who has a copy happens to read your threads on here (seriously unlikely).
Is there a specific reason why you need such an out of date firmware; surely you can just use the latest stock firmware for your carrier/country ?

Sorry but you must be mistaken me for someone else because this is my only thread about this phone that i have.
Also i have tried downloading the stock firmware for orange uk which is Firmware info: PDA:BVKG3 and i have searched on google and lot more websites and all the download links i get they are all dead so that is why i open a thread to try and get help on the community here.
Really ? What's this then ?
I understand what you're saying, but what I'm saying is your chances of getting hold of this particular firmware are close to zero.
Given the almost impossibility of getting it, why wouldn't you just use the latest available stock firmware for your carrier/country if you need to go back to stock ?
because i cant find the firmware were the download link.ent dead.
I understand what you're saying, but what I'm saying is your chances of getting hold of this particular firmware are close to zero.
Get the PC version of Checkfus (search for it on here/Google). You to choose your phone model, carrier & country in pulldown boxes, and it will enable you to download the latest stock firmware which you can flash in Odin.

All i can do is go to the top bar and turn on the wireless and all the features there.
I need help guys
So i noticed something on recovery mode this is all the options i get:
reboot
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
where is the options gone for me to install from memory card?
Your problem will not be fixed flashing roms. You need to search this forum for solutions. Even then it's not certain it will repair your phone, often only solution is a repair centre. Try this one to start with. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021

I installed firmware not rom, but my problem is that i cant see no menu or anything all i can do with my phone is push the top bar down and turn wifi and the other options.
Guys after i installed the firmware for orange my phone turns on but no menus just black screen all i can do with the phone is drag the topbar down and turn on and off the features like wifi, etc
Enter CMW wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache and format system. Re-flash the firmware.
