"android.process.media" error - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Three days ago I started getting a popup error message that states, "Unfortunately, the process android.process.media has stopped working"
I'm not sure what has caused this to start happening and I'm not really sure what it is affecting. I have already been experiencing random reboots, and the videos in YouTube and on websites have always been laggy and experienced forced closes and freezing. So I'm not sure what new thing has happened to make this error message appear.
It has appeared while watching videos, while browsing the net, and while in games and other applications. It has popped up around 5 times a day for the past three days.
Just interested to see if anyone else has had this issue with this error or possibly might know what may be causing this. I have rebooted and done a hard reset but nothing has changed. I guess the last action to do would be a factory reset.

this is common since several updates back. some kind of bug. hasn't seem tl be affecting anything really. just a background app crashing. its been reported n documented.

uninstall Google currents and it should go away.

Yeah, I've never had Google Currents installed. This is real annoying. I wonder if it is related to Google Maps not being able to run for more than 5 secs.

only with sd card
Hi,
For what its worth I only get this error when I have an SD card plugged in either in the miscro sd slot or the full size sd slot.
When I plug in a micro sd card with assorted media types: films, music, pictures etc. It would regularly give me two of those errors after reboot and then not at all until next reboot.

Help: "Unfortunately, the process android.process.media has stopped"

I am getting this error on my two week old prime 64. I have a 32GB micro SD card, but I get this message irregardless of whether it is installed or not. I have done a hard reset with and without the Micro SD and still get this message.
Any suggestions short of a factory reset and reload everything?
Thanks in advance!

when do you get the error? what are you doing when it happens?
It use to be shortly after start-up. Tonight I am getting it more often. It might be because I am running a rescan media app that never completes. It doesn't make a difference if I pull out my microSD card either.
It is probably related to the fact that neither Music or Winamp will see any new songs that I've transferred to the tablet. I've copied these tunes to both internal and external memory.

You probably need to disable sync of some google service until you find which one does it, then clear that appsdata. I've only had it with bookmark sync in the stock browser on the OG Transformer but that has a different service name then what you have.

I think I fixed it last night ...
I uninstalled 6 applications, and, after a couple of days will add them back one by one, until it fails again.
The apps were as follows:
Denso
Dolphin Browser HD
SyncLite ML
Veetle
i.TV, and
Google Currents
I will try to remember to post if this fails again....
You might nit have a problem on reinstall if it was, unless you restore data from backup or sth instead of a fresh setup.

SAME here..usually right after a fresh reboot. Seemed to start after last update or ICS update.

I only have 2 you have Google currents and dolphin HD. I been got rid of Google currents because it runs in background too much and is one of biggest battery drainers according to my better battery stats log.
I still have the error message after ggogle currents uninstalled. Now if you say you got it to go away, then that leaves only dolphin HD left for me to get rid of. Since these the only 2 apps you listed as similar and has seemed to get rid of problem after you ubinstalled them.
Ill get rid of dolphin and report back here if it fixes the issue or not. I doubt it would be the browser as its never running in the background. Can't hurt to try though. I have too many browsers anyways..lol
It didn't work. I deleted both dolphin and Google currents n it still occurs. Seems to occur more if you go to gallery or watching a video or stream. I think it's just another bug in ICS like the failed to download album list one. Doesn't seem to effect anything or make anything crash.
i got the same problem. even after today's recent firmware update (02/08): 9.4.2.13
I'm starting to have this problem come up as well.... Unsure if it's affecting anything noticeable or if it's more of an annoyance. I also have google currents installed but it happens sporadically. I noticed this happened shortly after bootup just now.

been happening since the upgrade
This has been happening way before upgrade, as its documented here already. This seems to occur alot if you doing something with gallery or any media players. But sometimes just comes out the blue. It is very annoying. I think its just some sort of background app or process crashing and therefore throws up the error. I wonder if this is linked in anyways to Asus task manager. That widget likes to crash at times or stop working. The error came when ICS was first introduced or the update right before that one.
I fixed this problem by doing this:
Settings -> Apps -> All -> Media Storage
Force stop and clear data.
I get this error constantly
I will try your suggestion when I get home.
I am pretty sure the culprit is Google Currents. Try removing this.

edit: nvm mind I got it to show again. but now other b.s. folders showing up in there also that wasn't there before.

Possible Culprit: Titanium Backup

I noticed this almost immediately after flashing a rom and subsiquently restoring Titanium Backup.zip via CWM. Before I ran TB, i had downloaded some apps from Google Play, which means i had to manually log into google first. This must have caused the "Andriod ID" to be set with Google Play, because after downloading apps, I opened TB and the popup message to restore my previous "Android ID" came up, and I clicked to revert to my previous "Android ID". This rebooted my phone and immediatly after booting up, i got this message. I also got the "google play error 921" that prevented me from downloading or updating any apps from Google Play.
To fix this, i just did a factory reset, wiped cache partition and dalvik, then rebooted and started fresh. I logged into Google manully, and downloaded a fresh copy of TB from Google Play. This time when TB asked me if I wanted to revert to the previous "Android ID", I clicked on keep existing. Both issues are gone now, and I am able to download and update all of my apps.
Hopefully this helps some of you. If so, click the "Thanks".

Gmail app is slow or just shuts down

Does this happen on anyone else's TFP? It does not happen all of the time but large HTML messages will make it freeze and if I touch the screen too soon it will give me the not responding message and I select "wait" or it will just shut down. Sometimes it won't even be HTML emails that will make it hang, I will just open the apk and get a white screen that does nothing. I have 3 emails hooked up to it, is that what is effecting it so much but if so why does my phone Gmail app work great? Just probably my most frustrating thing about my tablet as everything else works really well and this is the #1 thing I use mine for. Any ideas? I just cleared data and cache so we shall see if that helps at all. I would prefer not to use a 3rd party app but I guess I may have to. If I do need a 3rd party app what are your suggestions that act very closely to Gmail? Thanks a ton for your help.

Mine is working fine. Try logging out and back in. Also, try wiping cache.
I'm having the same issues. Just started happening out of the blue a few days ago too. Erased cache, killed the process & restarted, rebooted the tablet.. Keeps happening. :-/
My problem started on OTA.14 Not fixed on .15
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
I've got the same problems, black screens, force closes, all kinds of nonsense. Wiping cache etc sorts the issues for an hour or so, then it's back
This is a massive pain. Is anyone having any luck sorting this yet?
S
Same Here
Lock ups, black screens, and force closes. Man, this really frustrates me because I didn't have these issues on my old transformer. Its not just my Gmail also. My corporate mail and G+ sometimes do the same thing. Its gotta be something in Ice Cream Sandwich.

Gmail issues?

Gmail has been freezing and forceclosing on me near constantly for the last week or so. Has anyone else had this issue?
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
Was having the same issue after OTA.14 . I think it's its caused by a memory problem as it happens either when it was used a long time or had a lot of programs open. Restart seemed to fix it temporally. Maybe the new OTA .15 will fix it.

I have the same problem.
Have you tried clearing the app cache then rebooting? Always the first step when troubleshooting an app.
Same problem here in ATP WW C1 with OTA .15 before OTA .14 this doesn't happen.
Clearing cache and app data doens't help.
A reboot solves the problem temporaly but if I play a game that need lots of resources like gameloft's games, shadowgun, etc. the gmail app has again this problem.
I also have the same problem with google maps: freezing and closing with or without FC.
Gmail force closes
I can confirm this issue with Gmail. I never had any problems with gmail before the update, now it forcecloses and sometimes I receive a blank white screen for about 15 seconds when first opening.
I was having an issue with gmail freezing and closing. I cleared cache, and app data then did a cold boot. Haven't had a problem with is since.
I have also experienced gmail freezing since ota .15. Restarting the prime helps.

Useful information. That's a good idea; I'll check out my catlog too -- my gmail has been unsuable for quite some time now, and I definitely suspect is a disk I/O or memory issue.
I can't get into my Gmail app any more. It just closes as soon as I click on anything. Really annoying, been this way for months
A temporary workaround is to use Gmail as an exchange mail server, use server name m.google.com and it will do push email.

Glad I'm not the only one. I just found this same error after gmail closes. Strange since I appear to have a ton of memory available. Almost seems like the ATP won't use all available resources. I have a lot of stuff running and seem lately to have been getting system reboots from it even.
UPDATE:
Just found this tidbit:
https://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/28c5ffe1588436e?pli=1
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9412662/how-can-fonts-cause-opengl-out-of-memory-error
This might explain some of my behavior at least, as I'm using a bunch of Simple Text Widgets on my home screens (17 currently across 4 screens). Not word on a fix though. I really like the look so I'm quite bummed.
Also this one:
http://forums.developer.nvidia.com/devforum/discussion/6631/tegra-2-3-ics-driver-memory-leak/p1
I have the exact same issue. This pisses me off big time because it means I need to complete reboot the tablet to solve this. I am running the latest ASUS update as of this date (ICS 4.0.3) for the Transformer Prime.
The following error gets repeated over and over:
[ 06-15 14:56:33.460 563:0x233 D/OpenGLRenderer ]
GL error from OpenGLRenderer: 0x505
[ 06-15 14:56:33.460 563:0x233 E/OpenGLRenderer ]
OpenGLRenderer is out of memory!
Full LogCat:
http://pastebin.com/yEcmhDr2
Now, from what the previous poster shared, it seems we need to reduce the font size on widgets on the home screen. The question remains, how small do they need to be, when I look at my widgets, I don't even see any font I consider "large".
Did anyone solve this issue at all?
My Gmail was fine pretty. 28 update, but after the update it constantly freezes just after opening it. It's actually quite unusable as it is right now.

"Browser not responding" --- ASUS PLEASE FIX

Thread started to hopefully draw Asus' attention to one of the most annoying issues on the Prime, the "Browser not responding" error that seems to occur on almost any browser. I have turned flash to "on demand" which has helped a bit, but honestly, getting this message every 5-10 minutes is really annoying.
Sign on if you have this issue on your $500 Asus transformer prime too.
OMG this issue is sooo ANNOYING. I love my prime, but the constant pauses make me embarrased to show it to anyone. It looks a lot like hardware fault though, my galaxy s had the same issue and it was due to very slow flash writes(internal hardware, not adobe flash). It had an sd card soldered to the board for its internal memory and bascially any write would block the whole system for a second or two. It was fixed by some internal kernel changes and moving to ext4.
As noted in several other threads...there is a workaround.
In the browser, from the menu -> Settings -> Advanced -> Enable Plug-ins
Make sure it's set to "On demand"
Since changing this setting things for me have been pretty smooth.
I didn't have to do the On demand for the Galaxy S2 as it was perfectly find with it plugs ins on all the time.

It's sad that my HTC Thunderbolt, single core @ 1.4 ghz, can browse full desktop websites with flash enabled without slow down compared to TFP.

I have tried the 'workaround' and can confirm that is not a true workaround. While it does seem to slightly reduce the number of occurrences it does not eliminate the annoying popup altogether. The OP also stated that he has tried this. Who knows, maybe this is something that varies from one device to the next.
Sometimes I wonder if its the bad i/o in combination with the Plus-1 of Nvidia's 4-Plus-1 that makes the browser tank. The slow i/o causes the Plus-1 to come into effect and the transfers slow even more due to reduce cpu speeds.
Factory reset solved this issue for me....Browser would hang and get popup...after reset stock browser loads pages with no hangs. Use Titanium Backup data only!
This happens in a couple applications for me. The browser (doesn't matter which one I use) and Pulse both have this problem. Both constantly give me the "not responding - wait or close" message. This is either a wifi related issue or an overworked ninja core, I don't know which.
I have faith that Asus will fix this with software eventually - along with the "process.android.media has stopped." I just wish they'd get to it a bit faster.

A lot of the evidence shows that it's not a wifi or processor issue -- more likely a memory I/O issue with the writes/reads to memory.
It can happen on my apps without any internet use or wifi and it happens even when I overclock the CPU.

It means when restoring stuff after a hard reset, don't restore the entire app... reinstall the app as normal and then only restore data... the thinking is that a unclean install will reintroduce problems into the OS.
Chiming in just to say
1. I get this error message, often
2. it has gotten worse with the last update
3. there is also a lot of lag in typing as well. Sometimes I can type a word before it shows up and then all of the sudden the browser catches up
I always did a factory reset after a firmware upgrade and manually redownloaded my apps from the play store. The unit was set not to restore any settings stored on google's servers.
Its as clean as it could be but the browser is what it is.
I am thinking of taking a big loss on the unit and switching to the Galaxy note 10.1 if those Exynos 4412 rumors come true.
hmmm, this must be device specific, after resetting mine, wiping, and installing
I very rarely get browser lag with a good wifi connection
"Browser not responding" is not my only issue with the browser. It's laggy when scrolling, and it also use very long time to load websites. Anyone else who has the same issues?

Factory reset cut it down for me but only after i changed plug in to "on demand" that it got rid of it. Maybe the combination of both did the trick.
Edit: placebo. Just happened again. Replicated by going to www.engadget.com full site and as its loading i tried scrolling a few times and the browser locked up. Got the wait pop up afterwards. This is plugin set to on demand.

Never ever once ever had any lag or browser not responding messages. You guys must be doing something wrong.
I'm on stock but rooted 9.4.2.21
btw try quick ics browser off the market. It's like stock on steroids.
Have never had this issue with browser. Plenty of times with other apps though

Periodic freezing

Has anyone seen the S3 periodically freeze for about 20 seconds? It seems to happen randomly for me a few times a day. The tablet will be completely unresponsive for about 10-20 seconds, then go back to operating normally. It does not seem to be app dependent. Sometimes it does happen when the trying to wake the tablet too.

Haven't seen that on mine, I've had it since launch day. Maybe try and kill all apps or reboot and see if you can figure out what's causing it.

I have not been able to pin point and app as the source. The apps running are the same ones I had on my former Tab S. For a while I thought it might be game launcher and disabled it, but that was not it. Reboots don't seem to decrease the frequency and the freezes occur in every app I use including the launcher (using Nova).
It could always be an app as the OS level is different than the Tab S. I just have not found which app yet if it is an app.

My money is on an app thats not working too well with the tablet (probably vampiring resources).
If you truly want to try and fix it I would factory reset... See if its doing what your claiming, stock.
Then add the apps one by one until the issue returns.
I also have the S3 and have not had any issues...
I'm sure it is an app since no one else is seeing it. I'm disabling suspect apps one at a time to find it. Yesterday it did not freeze at all so I am thinking it might be the eWeather HD app.

It could have been something else, but that is the most likely candidate. It may have been some setting I had in it. I also have it on my phone and had no issues there.
The reason I suspect it is that the tablet popped up a warning that eWeather had been crashing a lot and offered to disable it. Once I did the freezing went away. Yesterday there was an update to eWeather and I have not had a freeze since installing that. I'm glad it's fixed now. eWeather is one of my favorite weather programs.

Stupid question: How do you disable an app? Or do you mean: disabling=removing?

P.s. I removed the SD card (128GB) and keep you informed if that is the bastard!
update: after three hours without SD card still no freezing and immediat startup!
put it back it stays ok, but I disabled Dropsync. I think that one is the suspect.

I had the same type of issues with my Tab S3 32GB and after removing my 64GB SD Card that showed no errors the issue was resolved. I then found that bestbuy was selling the Tab S3 128GB Model and purchased that model.
I found that running both devices with NO SD Cards they ran smooth with minimal lagg or freeze. I then installed two of the same 64GB Samsung Class10 u1 SD Cards and both started to have the lagging issue again as I used the SD Card to store Podcast & Data from Pocket Cast, Pocket & Texture. Ive since returned the 128GB unit and am trying a Samsung 256GB Class10 u3 SD Card to which I have not seen the issue return in 2 weeks.
Im not really sure if the speed of the SD Card is the issue but this thread appears to show that a SD Card can make these tablets laggy.
My Tab S3 128GB has frozen twice on me now and I've only had it for a week. It just did it about 10 minutes ago and was locked for a good 3 minutes and an error popped up saying that Nova Launcher had stopped... or something like that. It gave me the selection of launchers and I selected Nova and then the tablet functioned properly again. I do have a 64GB micro SD by samsung in the tablet, if it freezes again I will try removing that and rebooting.
