For some reason, it seems super slow on my S. I am not sure if it is a Wifi issues with the S or just something with Youtube. I use the Youtube app on my Samsung Epic Touch 4g just fine on the same wifi in what I can only assume is the same quality stream, since the youtube app only has HD and non HD as a option on both devices.
On my Tablet S, all the videos seem to load very slowly and buffer a lot. Watching the progress bar load when you pause a video is super slow, like it will load a small chunk then just stop. I tend to think this is something with the App itself because netflix and crackle work fine, as well as embedded flash videos on sites like vimeo and facebook.
Another thing I have noticed on this devices, is that the default web browser seems slow as well. Often, when I go to a site, it will show the progress bar load across the top of the browser really fast, then stop at the last 1/4 and wait for a while, before finally popping up and then loading the page. Seems like there may be some optimization issues here?
This is all on a 12 mbs connection.
Exactly the same here - youtube extremely slow and browser sometimes as well (seems to depend on the website)!

Don't have these problems on my new tablet, both youtube (including HD) and internet browsing run very smooth with wifi router.
youtube gives no problem here it is even faster than my asus transformer, stock browser i dont know i use dolphin hd with boost mode this is always faster than stock browser
I think this is something to do with Wifi. Try altering the security type that you use on your router to see if that makes a difference, I think the Tablet S has issues sometimes with WPA so maybe try using WEP and see if that helps.
Hopefully Sony will sort out the underlying issue soon.
I have the same issue after upgrading to Android 3.2. Videos loading extremely slow and buffer every 10-30 seconds.
Mine does this as well. One other thing worth noting is that my google TV suffers from the same issue. This is a 3.1 or 3.2 HC device as well and it is hard wired to my router at 1000 mbps. I think this is a Honeycomb issue.
My ISP is ATT Uverse @ 12 mbps. My galaxy s2 running 2.3.6 has no issues and is generally blazing fast.
Mine run perfectly, youtube app every hd movie very smooth
I use dolphin browser HD very fast and smooth too
Sony s tablet is amazing

I agree with you after i reconfigured buffalo wifi router( Security WPA-PSK AES), myyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy unrooted sony tablet s never buffers now when i watch youtube on youtube app, default broweser works super fast and wiffi never disconnect at all so awsome
I'll try to change my router. Currently using WPA AES + TKIP. Maybe it does not like the dual AES+TKIP option... I'll try changing to just AES first before changing to WEP.
Also, as a update since I posted this... Youtube app was 4.x on the Tablet S when I posted this. It was this when from when I bought it as far as I know. I noticed that the market had Youtube 5.x, so I updated. This did not present it self for update, manual or otherwise, the numerous times I updated my apps in the market. I had to search for Youtube in the market and then click update... The new version seems to be a bit faster, but still does not load as fast as my Galaxy. Still buffers a lot, but not as often as before.
I tried both WPA and WPA2 - always the same issue... using totally insecure WEP should not be an option nowadays! So it seems to depend on the router a lot - nevertheless I am disappointed...

I would guess you need to change your WIFI router security to WEP. Android doesn't seem to like WPA. I hope this works for you.
(1) The connection throughput of internet service provider (ISP) may be one;
(2) Stability of wifi connection may be another.
You may try connecting your Tablet S to (i) another wifi router; and/or (ii) use another ISP to see.

The standard PIE on DCD's 2.10 ROM (or any stock ROM, for that matter) is horrendously unstable. The 'download' constantly stalls out when doing speed tests and other sites load formatted in ways that make everything unreadable.
Opera Mini (Beta 4v2) is the absolute opposite. 2.2Mbps+ on all speed tests, stable downloads, 110% flawless page formatting... it just can't play videos. Is there any middle ground available? I'd take a slightly less 'Opera' browser, as long as it was stable and played videos. Is there anything like this?

On Opera? I can play YouTube videos when I run PIE, but it's still so slow and choppy. Not the videos themselves, but any site I go to on PIE.
which opera you use? Because I use opera mini but cannot play you tune video.
I'm actually really happy with TCPMP (core media player) and the flashvideobundle plugin. youtube videos launch almost immediately and stream perfectly.
Not sure if it works with opera mini, but it works with PIE. Also, make sure your "view" settings on PIE are not set to "column". I found that "desktop" allows screen formating most like PC, but some sites do work well on "fit to screen"

When will you people learn...
You can't test your speed on Opera Mini! I promise you, you are NOT getting 2.2Mpbs+ speeds on your phone consistently.
Opera Mini is not a real web browser. The way it works is when you click on a web page, Opera downloads the page to its servers first. Then, it takes a look at the page, and takes a picture of it, taking note of where all the links appear. It then sends this "image" + link information to your phone which displays in the opera mini browser. This method is so much faster than a regular browser because your phone doesn't have to download all the information and doesn't have to do any of the processing to render the page. (This also, by the way, introduces all sorts of security questions because this is being rendered on someone else's computer before it comes to you. In other words, don't use opera mini to do your banking)
when you do a speed test, you're not seeing the speed of your phone's connection. You're seeing the speed in which Opera's server is connected to the internet, and then seeing that result as a picture sent to your phone!
In fact, the opera mini experience is the same on a high-end PDA phone as it is on a simple little nokia from 5 years ago (speed of the phone is irrelevant, its just viewing images).
Case and point- browsing on an GSM nokia 6230 using EDGE (non-3G) is not noticeably slower than browsing on a Mogul with EVDO Rev A, and both reported over 2MBps in speed tests (EDGE averages around 100kbps).
Basically, this system is ideal for web browsing like the desktop. However, it can't do any pages that require client-side processing, since your phone is not doing any of the processing. For example, pages with real-time interaction, javascript games, and especially flash animation and/or video (such as youtube) would not work under this model.
There ARE browsers that are capable of this, such as NetFront and the upcoming SkyFire, but you will most likely end up with the same laggy experience as IE because you are back to using the phone's CPU to process and render the data.
Bottom Line: What you are asking for is not out there because the concepts are worlds apart (opera mini + flash video). Using TCPMP and the flash video bundle work flawlessy for me, might want to check out the latest versions of that.
Generally, I've found that there is not perfect browser for everything (yet). I use Opera mini for regular browsing of large pages, Picsel for secure pages (such as sprint.com account information), IE for mobile-access pages (such as the mobile accuweather) and for flash video using the bundle. I used to use NetFront for pages with flash and java interaction, but I actually found it too slow and clunky for regular use. The tcpmp video bundle works much better, so I removed NetFront.
Good luck, I hope this helped someone understand the situation better!
::End of rant::
Look... IE is the only thing you can find atm that is close to being full featured. The problem is on some of these roms it just plain does not have the memory to operate. NexVisions is one of them. Open just about any page and is 1mg of ram left. Other then IE you are forced to mix it up with other browsers until Skiyfire comes out.
So has anyone tested the Skyfire beta?

how are you getting this to work? i have tcpmp and the FlashVideoBundle.cab but youtube videos try to open in WMP, which gives an "unknown error" error
if i force it to open in tcpmp it says the rtsp protocal is not supported
using opera mobile reporting as a desktop browser youtube doesnt even open, it just crashes the browser, i cant get PIE to report itself as anything other than PIE (so it always goes to youtube mobile)

I have it. It shows a lot of promise but it's still early (version # is .5). Video is pretty choppy even over WiFi. It's one of the things they're trying to polish before release.
Make sure you are using TCPMP version 0.72RC1, and make sure you don't have any other flash plugins installed except the flashvideobundle.
I have both installed to my device memory (not memory card).
that's it really. I can go to youtube.com in PIE, tap on a video, and a little menu pops up asking if you want to play or save the video. just tap "play" and the video starts playing within a couple of seconds, and its very smooth.
As mentioned in the title, youtube HD videos seems to buffer a lot. I have a pretty good internet connection, constantly get around 10 - 12Mbps download speed. I don't have buffering problems on my laptop or my phone.
Anyone else see this and any setting that might help? Currently I'm turning off HD on videos to prevent buffering but ideally don't want to do that.

now I really dont have that problem due to my difference in internet speed but when I use my 4g from my thunderbolt *around that speed* I do notice the buffering problem only if there are more than one person using the connection at once. just for research, try and see what happens if only you are using the connection (turn off or disable other tech) and see if it actually makes a difference
I have to concur, youtube on Android tablets is a bit subpar. It never buffered this much on my iPad.
I get the same problem here, my pc and my phone load quickly while my GT seems to buffer very often while watching HD.

it happens using any browser as well. i remember reading about this issue on the ipad too and people had some mixed results by changing DNS settings but i think it was more of a placebo effect. it's definitely a problem with this tablet though.
for me, it's just the YouTube app.. viewing on browser is fine, so it's a coding issue with the app. I suggest using the Feedback option under the app menu to report this issue. Google needs to hear from us about this.
watching it in the browser introduces a different issue, however - everything above 480 is out of sync.
Same here. Seems tobe a problem with the YouTube app. Smooth streaming HD when opened in stock browser but some buffering in app. My browser had no problems with 480 either. Hope google fixes and updates youtube app soon.
In the Youtube app it's either HD playback or grainy. There does not seem to be anything in between.

I've got the same issue, but it only happens sometimes. I've noticed this happens more often when I pause a video, rewind, or when I'm watching a particularly long video (50 min or so). I doubt it's a problem with my network because my PC can stream the video just fine.

I wonder if this can and will support HDMI CEC.
I gave it ago on my Prime running the stock rom, i was quite impressed with how well it worked.
I could map my SMB network shares on my Windows Home Server perfectly and XBMC would stream anything SD fine, 720p MKV played some what ok with random frame drops / jerkiness every couple of seconds, 1080p video was very jerky and not really any watchable.
Plugins such as the BBC iPlayer worked (sometimes buggy), YouTube and Ted Talks also worked very well.

I may be wrong but I believe that these versions of XBMC don't support hardware acceleration just yet. I haven't been on top of the development of this app but that tidbit was enough for me to wait for the final release.
github is here: https://github.com/xbmc/android/commits/android-rebase-8/
There are two builds AFAIK
zefie's: http://files.persona.cc/zefie/files/cell/androidapk/xbmc-unofficial/?C=M&O=D&S=&P=
and the one on miniland: https://www.miniand.com/forums/forums/1/topics/136
and no hardware acceleration.

I had the same issue... It's because somehow it doesn't work when your volume isn't at anything but 100%. If it's set to the loudest it can be, the sound works fine.
It's not dead yet. Plenty of ROM development going on in the dev section.

XBMC 12 Frodo
Has anyone tried XBMC 12 Frodo RC3 on ATP? I have a TF201. I'm a long time user of XMBC since the original Xbox, and the app looks great. I'm very happy to see this. But unfortunately, with this version, the videos lag quite a bit and I get absolutely no audio. I've tried changing the audio out options and playing music/video with no luck. I did not yet try pushing the video/music out through HDMI yet, but not really much point yet.
Anyone else trying have experience with this?
Hello, recently (like android 4.2) youtube has decided to stop buffering videos whenever it feels like it, which means the video just hangs when it gets there with the little buffer wheel spinning. Sometimes it will continue to load the video after it stops, but most of the time it just locks up the whole app and you have to force close it and re-launch it. I have tried clearing app cache and data and what not, but nothing has helped. I even tried turning off wifi optimization, but that didn't help either. I thought that maybe it was my ISP, but the same videos in the browser play just fine with no buffering at all. It seems to do this regardless of the length of the video. I get about 30mbps down and 5.5up when I run speedtest on my tablet, so I don't think it's the connection that's causing the issue. I should also mention that this happens regardless of quality. It will load relatively quickly to a certain point, then just never buffer again. I fear the only way to resolve this issue will be a factory reset.
This Reddit thread solved my YouTube issues. I have fios, fyi.

Try an app called "Viral' from the playstore. I started using it as it can play YouTube music videos in the background while I'm using some other app. Recently I've been having issues with the default YouTube app and discovered that Viral did not have those issues. It may be worth giving it a try. I'm using a 4.4 custom ROM linked in my signature so your mileage may vary.
The issue I'm having is YouTube stops half way through a video and simply will not continue playing that video from the stop point, even after a reboot. I can play another video but it too stops half way or so in.
The YouTube app isn't NEARLY as good as it should, I'm still enraged and disgusted about the fact that the YouTube app on iPad is so MUCH better than the Android one, it has gestures to let you toggle full screen , it has pull down to refresh on lists (like the pull down to refresh on the gmail app), if you exit the app and come back, the video you were playing doesn't have to be rebuffered again (it keeps a few seconds buffered so you can watch the video quickly) AND worst of all, the iOS app lets YOU choose the resolution of your stream, what you get isn't an HD "on" and "off" toggle, you get proper choosing, like on the website, you get to choose between 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p AND 1080p, HD on our app is 720p, not 1080p, actually Google disabled the option from all android apps.
After that update I lost a lot of faith in Google, no wonder the iPad has so many more high quality apps, if you want devs to take you seriously, then YOU should give proper support to your devices, 1080p streams should have been available ever since our N10 was released, this **** is just unacceptable.
Thanks @3DSammy for the tip about the Viral app. :highfive:
Well, I figured out the issue, but not a fix. I think it's tied to comcast's router. I set up an old linksys with a broadcomm wireless unit as a repeater and I haven't had a single issue since. Numerous router resets and devices restores did nothing. It doesn't make any sense though because it only happens with the YouTube app, but same settings and everything I was able to watch a video completely on my nexus 10 on the repeater that I could not get through on comcast's router/modem(Aaris unit). It's strange though because my repeater connects wirelessly to my comcast router, so it goes nexus 10 to linksys repeater to comcast's router. It could be a security issue I guess, but I didn't look into it.
I have a Nexus 6p and recently the Facebook app will not let me play any video higher than 240p. Most videos only have a 180p option. The videos have terrible quality. I have tried reinstalling Facebook and deleting the files associated with it, but I cannot get normal quality videos to play. My Nexus 6p is running Android 8.1 June security update (might be May, not sure). I recently moved and have Comcast internet with 150mbps. I am not getting throttled. This also happens on other wifis as well as LTE data. There is no option to select a higher video quality. It's only 180p or 240p. I don't know if this plays into it, but YouTube kinda acts this way as well. Although I can change the resolution to 1080p, youtube defaults to 240p or 360p on every video I watch and I have to change it manually for each video. I have data saver off in Facebook and YouTube. I also have it off on my phone. Anyone have ideas why this is happening?

Check your internet speed again here :

If you still see a good internet connection , I don't understand what's wrong .

That's why I can't figure this out. My home wifi is supposed to be 150mbps, but when I do speed tests, its actually 170-180. When I use LTE data and do speed tests, speeds are about 25-30. When I used Comcast hotspots, speeds are still 60-100. When I use other internet hot spots, speeds are anywhere from 30-80. All of the speeds are more than capable of supporting 1080p video bandwidth. I also don't seem to have excessive ping either. So I can figure out why Facebook won't let me play any video higher than potato quality.

Sorry but I don't see at all why those apps are acting like this , that's curious !
I hope you'll find out
Same problem here with a 6P on the latest update. I have tried everything short of a complete wipe and reinstall. Stuck at 180p and 240 when I am lucky. The HD button doesn't work. I did notice a live video that looked like 480p today, but it was just the one video.
Update:I edited my build.prop to a pixel xl and I now have hd back

What did you edit in the build.prop? My nexus is running latest magisk and I even tried hiding root from facebook.

I edited "ro.product.model=Nexus 6P" to "ro.product.model=Pixel XL"
I am running magisk as well, not sure if a 100% stock 6p has the facebook video issue.

I changed "ro.product.model=Nexus 6P" to "ro.product.model=Pixel XL" in the build.prop located in "/System/build.prop" I then restarted my phone for it to read the prop again, but it didn't seem to help the quality.
I also noticed that live videos seem to play at normal quality(or at least something better than 240p) as of right now.

After a few hours, the changes took effect and now my videos default to 720p. That's strange that that had an effect on the issue. Thank you very much for the fix. Is it possible to get 1080p Facebook video?
You might try using other model numbers. I settled on 720p being good enough until Facebook updates things or if the next Android update fixes it.
