So something strange happened to me. I did nothing weird when I picked up my prime but of a sudden, crack.
My prime's screen broke in two over the length of the body.

I hope that the warranty wont be a problem, but i'm not sure how to handle it.
Should I go to asus directly or go to the shop where I bought it (mediamarkt nl)
I'm also interested if i'm the first person were the screen cracks when the prime is picked up.
There have been a few odd issues with screen cracking.

Another broken screen
Just posted on another thread about my TF201 screen turning up cracked when I took it out my laptop bag this morning. It was mounted in the dock at the time and hadn't been dropped or mishandled - just carried to work and taken out.
Unfortunately, the screen isn't covered by warranty and the local ASUS service provider (in Australia) quoted $400 for the repair (parts, labour, shipping). Not sure what I'm going to do (the crack is in a corner and is small enough to live with) but I must say I've lost a lot of confidence in ASUS over this purchase (even before the screen broke I was having crash/reboot problems and crummy WIFI reception).
Is the crack only on the inside(can you feel the crack with your fingernail)?
It may be due to heat, it has happened with other devices, and if that's the case and they don't cover it its really f'd up.
I can only feel the crack on the far right side.
However heat would be a strange reason for me because I didn't touch my tablet for more than an hour so before the fatal pick up.

There is a guy with a spontaneous crack in the upper right corner
According to Asus there had been to much pressure on that spot.
Maybe he pinched too hard to get better wifi/ gps signal.
No warranty, cost him 142,81 euros to fix.
Hope you are not the same guy.
Wow, that's really similar to mine. I just sent mine in for a warranty claim. Not sure they'll approve it, but this gives both of us more ammo for our claim. I've got post at the following link with a video on youtube as well.

Don't all of these seem to be originating from the top right, or at least in the top-half of the screen? (Assuming Asus logo is top left). I wonder if it's a hardware revision issue.. Do you all have similar serial numbers?
Wow, that's really frustrating..
So I guess no storing the tablet in the dock (at least not closed, anyway).
so far my screen hasn't ever cracked. But whenever the picture keeps flickering/going fussy/shaking, i'll not put pressure on the edges to try and fix it.
I'm also going to keep paying my extended monthly cover plan too just in case!
Mine also has a crack in the upper right. It is only noticeable in the right light and even then barely, its about 2 inches long, for now. It is the only thing I have a complaint about. Everything works fine on mine except the GPS and I can live without that.

From the look of it I'll probably be in the same situation...
But let's hope that with all these pictures / occurrences we/I can convince them it's not our fault but a production failure.

I don't know about the serial number but from the look of the thread that buster6070 posted it's more of a dock problem.
My serial is C10KAS0XXXXX

You're not left-handed are you?
Do any of you think this might be related to where one would grab the tablet to open it up?
that's so strange.. you'd think if the crack was anywhere, it'd be where the dock holds the tablet.. I think I might stick some tiny felt pads on the dock where the top (Asus label) of the tablet comes in contact.
My serial # is BCOKAS0XXXXX
My ATP is in the mail on it's way to a service center. But I've gone ahead and emailed ASUS with a link to this thread. I emailed their "Escalation Mailbox" and simply requested they take a serious look at my tablet before dismissing it as "CID". Also letting them know that this isn't an isolated situation. I would suggest everyone with this problem do the same. It's just to easy for them to dismiss a cracked screen as damaged done by the user.
My wifes cracked this weekend in the upper left corner, it is ALWAYS docked and almost always on the dinning room table, she uses it as a laptop replacement. There is not a scratch on it! I sent a PM to Gary, I heard nothing back yet. If this is gorilla glass, then they have problems! My wifes cracked in the black area of the glass only, it is hard to even see it, but it is cracked. Hers had really bad light bleed but she did not care, I never would have lived with it since day one. Asus better find a fix for this one, or just recall them all, these problems keep growing.....
BCOKAS serial number
This is not a thread I wanted to see...
I have a BCKOSA serial number....I hope that I don't become an active member of this thread....
This makes me so freaking nervous that one day I'll have a cracked screen.
And how could warranty not cover this? I'd ***** my way into it being covered, if there's no evidence of the user dropping or mishandling it then it defaults to being considered defective doesn't it?
Yours is the only case I've heard of that the Prime wasn't docked. Seems to me like the frame is letting the screen flex too much, but how you'd keep it from doing so I have no idea.

Yes it is all ways shut when not used. I always shut mine also, but I don' t use mine as much as she uses her's all the time. No damage to case or to inner area of dock. I just don't know, it must be a stress issue. Is gorilla glass this fragile?

...it's not even two weeks old and already I've dinged the nice chrome that surrounds the Touch Pro (the Chrome is scratched off and the black underneath now shows.) Anyone know a quick way to cosmetically fix this?
Take it to sprint and get a replacement...
No seriously...
As long as you didnt cause the ding by dropping the phone and it just chipped off there is a known issue with the chrome on the touch pro.
I'm pretty sure (correct me if i am wrong) that the solution is just in-store replacements.

Same suggestion here. As long as the phone does not appear to have suffered a fall, then Sprint will replace it for you.
its all good bro i already dropped mine.
i got a tiny tiny mark on the top left side of the device
no else can see it..but i sure as hell can..
i got another 20+ days tho..if anything ill get a replacement..ill give At&t some bs about my phone not working correctly or whatever lol
Even if you tell them you dropped it, they will still replace it. I thought it was a joke but it is true.
UPDATE
OK, I know what's causing the chrome to chip off. In my original post I didn't explain where the flaking off was happening. It's on the front face, on the right edge. Now, originally I though it was because it dropped a few feet (inside my car, from the center console to the floor), but after looking at it closer I think what's causing the damage is my friggin' case!!! I bought this Body Glove case (http://www.bodyglove.com/products_detail.php?product_id=24491), and after closer inspection, the stitching right where it aligns with the damage on the phone sticks up. I can't explain it properly but basically if I run my finger on that area, I can feel it rubbing against my finger. I'm fairly sure this is what's causing the damage.
Now what's troubling is that when I run my finger over it, it doesn't feel "scratchy" enough on my finger to be doing this damage (basically, I can rub my finger over it over and over again and my finger is fine). So is the quality of the plastic chrome really that bad that it can be damaged by something that won't even cause any type of skin abrasion on my finger if I rub it over and over again?
The damage has grown since my original post. I'm going to sprint and will try to exchange. In the mean time, stay away from that Body Glove case!
sprint will take that back.

well your luck is not as bad as mine. i got my tp on monday and on tuesday i had my phone in my stock htc case. opened the car door and went to grab my phone out of the door pocket and whoops case w/ phone in it hit the asphault before i could catch it. one day in and it chipped the top left corner of the chrome and i can see the black beneath.
i have tep on my sprint plan and went to one store and was shot down asking if i could replace it because they said i dropped it and was my fault and then they said plus u have to wait for 30 days and u will have to call assurion and pay $50 for a refurbished touch pro. bs.
should i try another store? what should i say

My TP had a ding on the upper left corner. I went to a store and told them it's been locking up from day one and got a new one.
update
I went to my local Sprint store and they said they would exchange it for a new one but, of course, they didn't have any in stock nor did any of the other nearby stores. They're supposed to have a UPS shipment of them today and supposed to give me a call. Here's hoping they do.
I looked at the original case that came with the TP and the inside is all smooth, no seams or stitches. I was using this case before I bought that
Body Glove case and looking back on it, the chrome damage did not happen until after I started using that Body Glove case.
So my advice for everyone, if you're not using an Invisible Shield that protects the chrome and you're putting your TP in a case, make sure there's no stitching inside the case where the phone will be sliding in and out. If you do have a case that has stitching on the inside, at the very least make sure all the stitching is smooth to the touch of your finger (including the flap area, basically any area that will be coming into contact with your TP.) Again, the stitching that was sticking out on the inside of the body glove case didn't seem like a big deal when I ran my finger over it but apparently it was enough to scratch and eventually rub off the chrome as I was sliding my TP in and out of the case.
i got a small scratch after 4 days... its on the verry bottom of the screen. im wondering if i can just polish it off. i dont know why they use such easy to scratch material... im really concirend with the cover of the camera and expecily sence its on the bottom and is alwes tuching when you set it down it will be all scratched up in no time...
The title may seem really weird but it is the actual question. This is my transition into the andriod tablet arena, and I have been using the TP for a few days now. Seems whenever the device is laying flat on a cloth covered chair, a bed anything along those lines, the screen completely freaks and no point touched will correspond to the correct area of the screen. Almost like the screen is receiving multiple input signals. When this has happened, I have been trying to search for something online or in the app store. The event that really gave me a start is when I was trying to type in something when it was laying flat, then all of a sudden a track from Bruno Mars started playing full volume (the volume was on full so that wasn't a random change). Must have pulled the track from online as I don't have anything stored on the device at this point.
If I pick the tablet up in either orientation it starts working fine.
In addition, just a few minutes ago I tried to scroll through my email and experienced the same issue, but when trying to power down, the screen wouldn't register my finger trying to select the option to power down. This even occurred after the tablet was brought upright or in landscape mode. Ended up having to hold the power button until it rebooted.
Really hoping this isn't an issue with the hardware. Anyone seen this or have any insight on what may be happening?
Thanks

Probably resetting the GPS also. GPS works if there is more humidity in the air. ;-)
Awesome post, although I haven't seen a head swivel around on my screen, might happen at some point though...... lol
I pre-ordered this through tigerdirect, and they seem to have enough issue fulfilling orders that I will try and contact asus directly.
Actually I was trying for the stringy hair Asian ghost chick.. you know the one that crawled out of stuff.. but can't remember the damn movie title.. oh wait.. it's a-comin.. YES I REMEMBER HAHAH!
Yes yes.. if you ever see this on your screen.. RMA it..
hahahaha, I think you are referring to the Ring movie.
I just got off the phone with Asus and the person I talked with had never heard of this type of issue. The only suggestion was to send it in, but if their supply chain is still struggling to fill orders from across the US then I'm guessing an RMA will take a couple weeks if they would simply send a replacement tablet. I just got the thing so I want to play with it!
But since there is the base warranty on it, I could wait a bit and if it still does it after a month or so I could inquire again.
The only other thing I would be waiting for is the ICS upgrade. I have a gnex phone on vzw and can really see the improvements made going to ICS. Is mid to late Jan still the timeframe people have heard?
Nonono not the ring that one has orcs and hobbits.. oh and at least one skateboarding ninja elf..
PS: he shoulda had nunchucks.. would be way more awesomeness..
LOTR II I think, forgot about the skateboarding part. That was really throwing me off!

I doubt it... the metal back would act as a shield against static interference.
I just finished posting in a thread where I explained that the back of the TFP has a chassis ground to the charging circuit and thus the battery. It's possible that on your TFP, you have a bad ground from the back of the device to the PCT layer, which is incredibly sensitive to electrical current (since this is how it detects touch input).
Since the back is a ground for the device, small amounts of current are constantly being thrown off by various circuits into the back of TFP, and thus are making their way into the PCT layer where they're wreaking havoc on touch calculations. Once you grab ahold of the back of your TFP, those currents ground through you, normalizing the circuit and allowing the PCT to function normally.
That's my theory at least.
We went through that with Sensation. Touch screen needs grounding to works properly with metal back plate. I bet if you actually hold the tablet in one hand, it works just fine. It's not something Asus can fix tbh, this problem occures with most devices which have metal in the back cover.
Edit. Actually, thinking about it, yes, if something is grounded to back plate, fixing might be bad, but above might still apply.

I was starting to think along those same lines but an hour ago I had the tablet laying on a bedspread and did not experience any issue.
Along the lines for your theory I wonder if whether the unit grounds through the back panel or further through me is fine, but the slight charge is just too much and royally throws everything out of whack.
Have most people opted to get some kind of case or protective film (I.e. Skinomi) that would most likely help this issue?

Click on my nick and look at touch screen issue thread I started. Reading OP should give you some idea. If my theory about ATP is correct fully charging and discharging it should fix it for a while.
Edit. Issue is very random normally.
Also, protective case or film are likely to make it worse.

Hmm, the case issue does make sense. I suppose any cover of the common materials would amplify the static if the it were moved around on the suspected fabric.

The PCT layer is under the glass on the other side of the TFP, and electricity follows the path of least resistance. The chassis is grounded to the charging circuit, so any static shock is probably going to end up dumped into the battery.
Unless, of course, as I theorize, the chassis has a bad ground to the PCT layer.
Otherwise, everyone's TFP would go nuts when they used it while on fabric.
Thought this might be interesting for some to see how a Square trade accident coverage situation goes. I will update the thread as new events occur. If this isn't kosher to some, please delete. I searched the forums hoping to find a similar thread but found nothing.
I accidentally dropped my phone in my basement Sunday the 19th and filled out a claim form online on the 20th at approximately 12:30 pm central time. I was asked if I preferred to be mailed a refurbished phone of same or similar specs but since I use my phone for work I chose repair mainly in hopes that they can fix it and I won't have to go through hassles of installing a tibu backup. If for some reason they opt not to repair it figure it'd be nice to start fresh with a new Note. I entered my credit card information to be charged the $99 deductible to begin the process.
After filing the claim you are given information that they will contact you within 1-2 business days from submitting. Currently I have not been contacted after 1.5 business days have gone by (full day today, half the day before). They state to call them if I am not contacted in this time but after 15 minutes of being on hold I figure I can waste time doing that tomorrow when a full 2 days are up. The current status online is that an agent is being assigned to my case.
About the phone: It fell about two feet from my couch to the basement cement floor and cracked the lcd diagonally across. There is a chip in the top right corner of the ceramic and dents in the metal around it. It was housed in an elago case which I now regret as it protected nothing. Phone is still functional and has been backed up for when I am able to send it in.
Well that was quick. Moments after posting I received an email with the prepaid next day air UPS label to send it to their depot in LA. What I am hoping is that if they choose to repair the lcd that the chipped corner will be addressed as well as it snags my shirt. Fingers crossed.
Definitely interested to see how this works out for you. Wish you nothing but the best. Good luck.
Ya i would love updates on this too. I have so many warrantees through them but have never had to use it yet.
I always read about how people bust their phone so easily and it baffles me that I've never broken a screen yet. I had my iPhone 4 in my lap sitting in a van and got out forgetting it was their and it fell off my lap face down onto concrete and no scratches to the screen. I had my Note in my hand and accidentally hit my hand on a car door when I was getting out and it bounced onto the concrete below, face down. Got a couple chips on the bezel but that's about it. But yours busted falling two feet off the couch. So weird....

What was weird was I expected it not to be broken. It's definitely not the first time it's slipped out of my hands, but it's been a trooper and kept in tact until the short drop.
Anywho...
Got bored and google searched the place they are having me mail it to. It's these guys: http://www.cfrepaircenter.com
Some spotty reviews online, so fingers crossed. Wouldn't be too happy to spend $100 + original cost of the warranty to get a shoddy repair. I'm going to add a note about the broken ceramic and jacked up metal portion in hopes that it is addressed. I'll post pictures tomorrow to show a before and after.
It depends a lot on how the phone falls. The corners of an LCD screen tend to be weak spots, so it can often crack if it lands on a corner which sounds like was the case here.
With this phone the LCD, front glass, and bezel (the silver band) are one unit. So a cracked glass = entire front replaced. The part costs about $200.

There are a lot of little hairline cracks in the LCD as well that don't show too well. Using a Captivate right now and even with CM10 Jelly Bean, I know I'm going to be missing the Note immediately. Off it goes in the morning!

I haven't bothered doing more than rooting and unlocking it for travel. I need my phone 24/7 for work, and stock hasn't bothered me one bit (ICS or GB) on this. The phone is encrypted, if security was the question.
The finale!
Well, I got my phone back today. Looks terrific. I'll post pics later if needed, but if you know what a new Note looks like, that's what it looks like. Even arrived with the annoying little stickers that came on the bezel. Looks like they even replaced the plastic battery cover.
One minor thing is the phone was returned reset to factory due to my refusal to give up the encryption password. It's not a big deal as I ran a backup, just thought I'd mention it. I understand they needed to do QC before calling it fixed.
Have a new Otterbox Commuter case on the way tomorrow!
Decent service, fast turnaround, and pretty impressed all around. A tad bit expensive at $100 deductible but considering the cost without accident insurance and having to install the LCD myself, this was well worth it.
Thanks for sharing!

I've seen that before - when I was building my own projector. It could be a bent ffc cable. You might want to crack it back open and verify they are all properly seated in their slots and nothing is pressing against them.
Hope that helps!

I re-opened the case. There does not appear to be anything bent or pressing up. Even the case loose, the screen is still like that. I've tried slightly pressing anything with cables attached and the picture does not flicker.
the link you posted goes nowhere. if nobody knows what you did, nobody can actually help you.

looks like this is what I was looking for. compuw22c seems to be right on track below with what is going on.
Looks like a cracked screen if you look just right and down of that "cross hair" and would explain the semi working nature of the display. Maybe give us a close up photo of that "crack" to confirm? Maybe you flexed the screen just a bit too much

This ...
The screen clearly has a crack at the bottom of the vertical stripe ...
Ribbon cable busted, or screen ribbon connector is busted (other than the crack).

Wow, that much damage? It appears as though there is a crack on the LCD not the glass, as I can not see the crack when the prime is off. Originally I used a plastic prying tool that I bought online for this purpose, but it broke within minutes. I then used a small screwdriver and pried the case enough to get a fingernail wedged in between, then I inserted a credit card and pried all around the unit. I didn't realize I have done that much damage (cracked LCD and potentially a broken ribbon). I guess my loss should serve as a warning to others.
To be honest, the only reason why I wanted to open the case was to get better wifi coverage. I use the unit a lot for note taking and for the brower when at work. My co-workers with other tablets are able to find wifi networks that I can't, and I was getting a bit frustrated by the Prime.
Now that mine is broken, I can honestly say, I won't be buying another Asus tablet to replace it. With the poor handling of the wifi (saying that it works enough), GPS (removal of the spec), and the few apps that crashed my prime (like World Series of Poker and Where's waldo to name a couple). It has honestly made me rethink the entire Android platform.
I may throw my chips into a Win 8 pro tablet after a few months of it's release, and I don't want an Ipad. I guess I'll be back to using my laptop for now.
Thanks All for the help.
At least someone who has bricked their unit but has a good screen might be interested in buying. Bad luck, but it does show how careful you need to be when opening devices.
Perhaps the LCD is not cracked, just looked again.
The construction of the Prime is quite poor. Did you by chance start opening it from the bottom and not the side? I recall a while back someone wrote about damaging their ribbon cable like that.
Really looks like a cracked LCD.
Cracked mine while trying to replace the glass at the bottom left and the entire screen went kaput, but here it's more centered and it works on the left side prior to what looks like a crack at the bottom. did you first insert the screwdriver right over the right dock mounting point?
I've seen people using putty knives (putty spreading tools used in construction) to open larger panels with success. they're thin and durable- perfect for the job.
Sad to see another prime go like that If only they had LCD's for sale..... I couldn't find one for mine
one of my friend just bought the Z2 recently.. and with our glories summer ~ 40c degree, the back glass has a crack line same like this photo but at the bottom

As someone from the same city, I find this scary.
Did the Sony people accept his claim under warranty? Or did they just insinuate that he dropped it and refused?
this is ****ing scary.... is it overheat causing this??

he used to shot lots of 4k video.. it could be the gap issue makes the glass unbalance with heat exchange, but haven't notice any gap at the time. it didn't take even three days of use!!
as there is no clarification from Sony.. the defective will count as user fault
another self crack.. and now in the front
So no one else has a crack and you have two....sure you aren't being too rough on the device?
i just sent my z2 to retail for warranty. The front screen maybe unglue near the speaker, i tried to clean them but nothing happen, i'm sure that the front green unglue and the back camera has some dust. i'm very sad, just use z2 for 2 weeks

This is sad really...
Why is it the people doing the complaining have just one post to their name. This started like 3 weeks back. Only one post. You'd think they'd be a bit more worked up right. You read the craziest things on the sony forum.
Have noticed a similar trend on product review sites, for 5 star as well as one star reviews. Just one post and post date is the same as join date and these people are never to be heard from again.
Why does glass break ? either stress or a temperature differential.
Don't cool an overheated phone under the tap. It might 'self crack'.
The most possible reason is overheat.
The water proof phones like z, z1 come with strong adhesive, which expands and then break the glass.
You have to send it for repair or DIY repair.
An original glass can keep the phone waterproof. So you should be careful when select the replacement part for repair.
You can get origianl Sony Xperia phones replacement parts at wirigs.com.
Photoshopped. I can tell by the pixels and from seeing quite a few shops in my time.
Don't think I've known a set of owners to be so protective over the opinion of their device.
Do you think that there is a conspiracy going on?
Is a fact that most people only turn to the Internet when they have an issue with their phone, so only having one post would be normal.
Mine has a cracked back too.... And I'm not a new poster

could you upload some pic please..
it's definitely an overheat problem so please guys stop covering up for Sony, if this doesn't happen to you now it could be affected by it later
my advice do not shoot lots of 4K video as it happen to be the most process that rise the temp. very high, till Sony resolve the issue stay away of any hot environment
http://www.xperiablog.net/2014/05/3...peria-z1-cracking-screen-issue-sony-responds/
However, Sony released the following statement to Watchdog, highlighting for the first time that there is an issue:
“In a small proportion of cases, screens have indeed cracked with no identifiable cause and in these instances the phone has been repaired for free.”
sight.. Finally, and there are still people who says that's a Photoshop or an impossible to happen without any force
anyone from UK guys.. can you confirm the statement from Sony?
The statement was made on watchdog, now that they have made the statement on such an open outlet, I imagine any returns on cracked screen with zero frame damage will get a repair under warranty. Whether cover is for a single crack or multiple fractures remains to be seen

Took my Z2 back to CPW today after it got a small crack near the camera after i have been using satnav for an hour. Service centre said sony know about the issue and if you cant feel the crack then it will be heat related. I noticed when i took my phone of the dash the gap between the glass and bezel had grown. I think when it strunk down something might of got stuck in the gap and caused the crack.

Mine went back to ee's service centre... They say it's accidental damage. Had to pay £40 to be repaired.
Selling it so had to have it done officially rather than doing it myself.
