[Q] Does regular flashing of ROMS slows down phone? - Galaxy Ace S5830 General

Hey World dwellers
just a question does regular phone flashing slows it down or something?
or is it the placebo effect

It will gradually degrade the phone, hardware-wise. For example, the battery will start to lose health, the internal flash memory will eventually stop working (due to the massive amount of writes/rewrites while flashing ROMs), your SD Card will also malfunction (especially if you use the SD card read/write speed boosts).
But, apart from the last point, it won't have a noticable effect for years, maybe 5 or 10 or 15, depending on how much abuse you give and how much your phone can take.
So, unless you aren't planning to change phones for the next decade, you shouldn't worry about it.
As for the loss in performance, it might be a placebo effect, it might also be the ROM you're using.

There is a little difference but its not noticable.
As for the performance just clean your phone using SD Maid from the market. It will delete all the unnecessary files.

thats it.... so no matter how fast it is(rom)..the speed will reduces due to massive read/write in internal memory...? hmm..wonder why no one bring this matter up... just a question, how many times that we can flash the rom until its 'DEAD'?

Lol.
It can't go DEAD just by flashing ROM's.
Only flashing via odin has a daily limit of 5.

Flash memory has a limited amount of read/writes , but the amount is many times bigger than those on Thumbdrives and SDcards .

Swap?

Hello guys, I wanna ask if anyone uses swap and understand whether it's suitable for use. I'm trying out swap right now but can't really see any difference.
Does anyone know what application can see what processes were swapped out or in?

I have read that, thank you. I use swap just in case I'm multitasking too much, you see. But apparently not many users are using swap around here.

Well , I can't help in swap but I can help in Multi-tasking .
V6 SuperCharger's Multitasking settings helped me alot .
Now I can use Dolphin Browser HD and 4 other tasks each time (except Music , it delays )
Swap may be useful if you're using a Class 10 SD and you're running a lot of apps/tabs with a lot going on but I wouldn't bother myself.

are u using a script with modified swap/vm values?
Care to try one out?

You were using the first flash rom then? I mean, when the music got lag?
I'm using coderom with v6 in agressive 1. This is amazing, ahaha I had at least 6 apps opens with music, and everything just fine.
Thumbs up for v6 !! ahaha
About swap, I dont really know if it works, all comes about how you use your phone (i guess) since the values of swapinnes you can give to it.
I have swap on, but dont notice any difference. I dont remove it because.. why would I do that? ahah maybe someday It will be useful . I have swapinnes at 60 btw.

for the time being yes. stick with official updates. then while you stick with official updates do your reading. take your time and read through out the threads. and when you feel confident enough to root then go ahead. but for now i suggest you stay stock.

i dont quite understand the ppl who buys android phones and doesnt modify it... i mean the only TRUE difference between iphone and sgs2 is powered by iphone iOS and Android.. which is open source... the other difference doesnt really matter much.. processor ( yea its more powerful but duuh.. there isnt much things to do that really require that much power) or the screen (duuh iphone has abit better screen so what? if u dont look closely u wont even see difference(atleast not me)) so yea if you gona buy sgs2 i RECOMMEND you to do alot of flashing and rooting and play with it around
WITH BACKUP of course... especially the EFS backup
It all depend how you use your phone. Sometimes I it for hours on end and go through 2-3 batteries a day (I have 3 spares).
Today I used it very little. About 7 phone calls, 2 messages and only about half an hour browsing / xda etc. Currently on 85% after 18 hours.
So usage makes a massive difference.

do you think is there a need to change the Kernel version ? or just do the official update and it will be fine ?
Definitely stick to official updates. Regardless of what anyone might tell you, it's a fantastic phone running stock firmware. And if you're not confident about flashing custom roms/kernels (there's a small risk everytime you do it that things might go wrong/you might brick your phone), definitely stick to official firmware.
At the very least until you've done a lot of reading on here and are confident to try different roms/kernels. If things do go wrong, it might take you a few days of research on here to work out how to fix your phone (which means you won't have your phone working for that time), and at worst you'll have to return it to Samsung for repair. Which you'll probably end up paying for as running custom roms/kernels voids your warranty.
So slow and steady, stick with stock for a while and read. Then read some more. And when you're done doing that, read for another couple of months.

Sorry but got to disagree, yes its a great phone as stock but with custom ROM and kernels its an amazing phone. The devs here have done some amazing work. BUT (and its a big one) dont do a thing till you've researched your arse off, and you understand all the risks of what your doing.

(woohoo 400th post)
Latest stocks have been fine, even stock kernels have shown improved battery life. But with a custom rom/kernel combination your setting up a phone the way you like it with many ways of tweaking it.
If you do buy one, update to latest stock, try it out, if your not happy then root and enjoy.
My post was an attempt to persuade the OP to stick to stock should he purchase an SGS2. The last thing we need on here is yet another " Hlap mai fone broked !" post :-/ (and everything that goes with it).

My wifi and GPS are on 100% of the time. I never turn them off. Today, 23 hours since charge and about 2 hours screen time and battery on 69%. But 3g is off (2g only) and no email sync.
Yesterday, heavy usage and went through at least 2 batteries.
BTW, since I got the s2 I've only ever used cf root kernals. Nice and stable for me and the closest thing to stock. Others claim increased performance or have over clocking etc don't interest me. I believe the phone doesn't need them. Also using Checkrom. On the S1, well that was different.

[Q] Cyanogenmod Battery life

When will cyanogenmod custom roms will have better battery lives? tested a couple of them including " the end 2.5 " , but the problem remains : faster battery drainage than the original stock gingerbread roms. haven't tested Maclaw's cm9 yet. but the framework mods and the battery tweaks recently came out are not helping quite well.

download "temp+cpu" and monitor the temp
sent from S2
The main factors of phone heating, are Modem, Kernel, and Rom (but rom not so much)
When you don't have the proper modem, there have been complaints of overheating, i experienced it myself when i used the LPS modem, but since switching to my current one, i have had no problems
the kernel heating occurs when you UV or OC a custom kernel, that can be fixed by flashing a new kernel
Some roms might cause over heating, but very rarely, as roms are lighter then TW, and should be running less programs in the back ground
just some friendly advice, try flashing another modem
Cheers

please explain this crap. i am on Slim ICS with Siyah Kernal 3.2.1. Korean S2 converted to I9100. for 3 days m getting this Stats. no matter what i do. it always come to this. I Delete the Battery Stats from Kernal menu. but after some time. ths Android OS again shows the same.
so 30% batt gone in 4 an half hr apprx..so u mean ur not using an this happens give rom, kernel details an more in depth will ,giv u better ans
First read the What is Android OS post second read and install from Better Battery Stats thread .

Yes I did not use it. and my in 4 hours 30% discharge. m using Slim ICS with Siyah kernal and Yes i had read that post about android OS. there's no way Android OS drain can be that much.
Is this a Korean Version fault?
and my problem is not related to better Battery thread. or it is? please guide me
give it some time to settle and install betterbatterystats so u can kno if anything is causing wakelocks,,,,,also wat i suggest is turn brightness to lowest, auto sync off,no livewallpaper, use data only wen needed, enable power saving mode, turn off wifi,bt,don use live widgets, avoid task killers, hope this helps to a point....and using totally black back grnd helps alot in tecky way...
Wait about 3 recharges and check what your drainage is then, if the problem still occurs, try reinstalling the ROM. Hopefully, the problem should be fixed.

I think you misunderstood my post. I certainly wasn't agreeing with the person telling you to use your phone like a dumb phone.

I had this issue on every phone running ICS 4.0.3, even on nexus s and I found out that it is the bug in OS, it's a false reading. But if you really experience battery drain try to reflash and use clean rom for a couple of days and see if it's still present. I hope I helped you, cheers

No logic says you go to the rom thread and find out if its the rom or the user .

No, you don't have to change rom unless the rom is draining battery, and you can check that by reflashing it and use it clean for a couple of days. I have stock i9100 ics 4.0.3 and battery stats are reading android os as one of the top consumers but I don't have any drain. I guess it's a 4.0.3 bug because I had same reading on nexus s with stock 4.0.3 and on various stock/custom ics roms on different devices.

I just found out that this bug can be fixed if you disable screen touch and lock sounds in settings>sound. Apparently this keeps os awake. I've disabled all sounds except ringer and notification on my devices and now I'm testing that theory, I hope it will cure that bug and maybe give me some extra battery life.

You realize this is not normal, and trying to fix is stupid in my opinion, waste of time, I'm have used aosp and cm9 and stock and all are way low.

maybe it's stupid, maybe it's not, but when I see that something is wrong i try to fix it, and as far I can see turning those sounds is working, my awake time is now only 15-20 min longer than screen time on both my devices. Before I did that it was 2-3 hours longer on a daily basis. I think he should try, and if it works, great, if it doesn't he should change the rom. Not really waste of time as he can test that in couple of hours. Cheers
