[Q] Android masquarading as iPod - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I PROMISE I have Googled and searched and searched and Googled. I absolutely apologize if this is a repeat or obvious question. I hope that there is a simple answer.
To put it plainly, I am wondering if anyone has made some sort of software that would allow an android device to appear as an iPod/iPhone while attached to a media playing device via USB? Specifically, a car head-unit (radio).
My Pioneer has all kinds of wonderful abilities for talking to and controlling an apple iWhatever, but has almost nothing for other devices. And I just wonder if anyone has helped bridge this gap?
I know that when the Palm Pres first came out, the emulated being an Apple device for a while, and I thought I saw a similar software for Android once upon a time. But if it exists and works today, God knows I am not finding it. SOOOO I thought I would ask in this wonderful, singular place of knowledge, before finally giving up.
Again, I apologize if this is a redundant question. Thanks so much in advance. Have a great day!

Lemme guess-you have a AVIC head unit? If so, me too! (X910BT). I actually posed a somewhat similar question asking for information on how to program A2DP so I can spoof the Bluetooth into thinking it were a supported model so we could stream Slacker.....
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can help us....

What is the connection method? If its USB you could try mass storage device mode just to access the files themselves assuming the player has some sort of GUI to navigate the directories.
The easiest method if you want to control audio via the phone is to just hook the headphone output into the aux. Apple's proprietary usb connection has audio out and thats how docks are able to use it.
What is the radio model and have you tried Googling for a solution. I can't believe the manufacturer would just leave all other devices in the dark, but I have seen stuff like this before.

Ummm... yes, connecting by USB. And yes I googled first. The pioneer will mount a USB mass storage device, but it is slow and lacks much in the way of functionality, such as sorting and playlists. Again, if the phone "pretended" to be an iSomething, then that would be ideal. I am wondering if such is possible.

I posted the same question a week ago with no answers. Great source of information here.
Anyway I dont think the issue is making the android system "pretend" to be an apple product as blackberries also work fine. I think droid needs a software to make it compatible wit this usb feature.

[Q] slow/distored sound with android car stereo unit

whats up guys, this seemed the best place to post this since it doesnt pertain to any of the devices listed here. i have the Dynavin Android unit (www .dynavin .com / android.php) in my car and im having an issue that so far it seems only 2 other users have had.
with this unit there are 2 "sides", 2 different computers in one is guess you can say. the am/fm radio, CD/DVD, bluetooth, etc is all completely separate from the android OS side. whats happening to me is ALL sound played on android gets distorted, slow, and staticy. i have reinstalled the firmware numerous times, used different SD cards, i have tried different apps, it happens with music from the SD card and internet music, it even happens with the sounds when u adjust the volume. nobody on our huge thread at e46fanatics can figure it out and only 1 or 2 other people have had the issue.
the weird part is that many times it will play fine for a few minutes and then start to slow down, and even rebooting doesnt help at that point. im thinking maybe it could be overheating, but even with the a/c blasting in the car it happens. and the radio/cd part is completely unaffected.
thoughts?
nobody has any idea? its android 2.2
geez tough crowd
ANY ideas?
dammit....

Wow, that's a sizeable thread!
Looks an interesting device. What troubles me is that it appears to be an intermittent issue. I'd agree that heat could be a culprit, possibly - I'd be tempted to try running it out of the car for an extended period of time and see if that helps.
You could also try OSMonitor or similar and see if you can monitor internal temperature. If the ROM is rooted, you could even try under or overclocking it and see if that helps.
Car audio I can cope with, but Android debugging not so much - you could try doing a logcat (assuming you can hook up via USB) and see if it gives you useful info when it's freezing up.
I have to say, this is screaming out for you to install Torque on it and a bluetooth ODBII scanner...!

yea its not rooted and the manufacturer doesnt seem to want to help with that, and they cant seem to replicate any of the issues the units are having (including force close loops). as for Torque, problem is that the bluetooth doesnt work with the android part, it only works on the radio part for phone calls or streaming music. its like 2 separate OS's in one unit.

The Android side of the unit has a hardwired OBD connection available, and the latest units have an OBD software module.

The unit also has USB ports on the back, that talk to the Android side. You can attach a powered USB hub to that to gain more ports. This way you can add a WiFi USB dongle, and even a BT dongle via USB.

S3 usb to car stereo?

Am I correct that from what I have read...you can NOT plug your s3 into the usb of a car stereo and have it play and show song names etc? So unless they "fix" the usb mount issue the only options is aux or bluetooth? All the talk of the awesome sound these things are on paper anyways capable of and the purist connection to a car stereo is not available? Like many Im waiting for my US version to arrive in a couple of weeks and just trying to get a grip on what to expect and not expect is all.
Correct. You can't connect the S3 to a car stereo like a USB stick at the moment.
...unless your car stereo supports the MTP protocol
They have to be working to fix this right? I certainly hope they are....kind of hard to believe they made a change like this really.
+1
I guess since Im switching from a iPhone I have just gotten use to being able to use the phone with just about anything I try to attach it to. I do not regret jumping to Android with this upcoming phone, Im done with apple, but I think its been long enough these guys need to get the ball rolling on more streamlined connectivity on a semi universal scale like the iphone has. I really dont want to have to keep the iphone around just so I can listen to my tunes in the car.
This irritates the faeces out of me.
Android File Manager on Mac is flakey with it. And now, I'm in work on my XP machine and I can't get files off of it.
Grrrr. Why the hell have they stopped USB Debugging from being able to mount as normal?! Or just have the "Mount on Next Connect" option like on the S2's ICS rollout (Which was annoying too, but at least it worked).
I just don't get why Google are doing stuff like this and stopping you install on external memory. Is Google starting to become like Apple where they just bend over to networks and developers so they can make as much money as possible while the customer suffers? If this is how they going I'm really not liking it.

I get the reason they dropped it for phones with only internal storage, but why doesn't the SGS3 support it with its external SD-CARD?
Has Samsung made any statements about this? Because all I know is not being able to connect to my car, tv, other computers etc. and not being able to transfer Apps to external memory is completely ruining this phone for me and can't use it the way I usually use Androids, I mean now I always have to carry around a flash drive and a OTG cable and transfer from phone to flash drive then flash drive to other device, and I really don't give a crap about their technical explanation because i'd rather have a rougher Android experience with all the features than what they doing here, and I shouldn't be having to Root my phone just to get stuff that should already be there.
I'm so mad! I just got a new deck today and it doesn't recognize my SGS3 via USB! :crying::crying::crying:
Has there been a fix since the last post?
Edit: I actually found a fix! Easy UMS! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1711009
Just get poweramp pro and a large sd-card, keep your music in .flac and sound quality is pretty decent even through the 3.5mil jack

Pushing audio through microUSB to head unit

So one thing I really liked about my iPhone was the ability to push audio through the charge port into my truck's head unit (radio) while charging. The head unit has a usb port on the front and it charges my phone, and if I put the phone into storage mode, the head unit can read the storage on my phone. Now I want to push audio from apps like Google Play Music and iheart radio. Is this possible? I'm rooted.
Also on a side note, since I am rooted, can I update OTA without looking root? I used the steps from galaxys3root.com.

Sorry bud but most USB head units are mass storage or iPhone only. I'd invest on a Bluetooth headunit with audio streaming profile like the Sony MEX-BT4000P.
Get a windshield mount (had a factory one for my Atrix, loved it) and Bluetooth that bad boy. You'll also get cool stuff like car phone answering and if you use Vlingo in car you can made heads turn.
This feature will come with jelly bean

That is awesome!! But until that time comes, is there a way to do that on ICS?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I've been trying to get this to work for about a week now. The guys at my local car audio place are just as frustrated as I am.
I even tried using the OTG connection, no dice.
Supposedly some of the new Sony units support MTP, but then you're using Sony (which I guess doesn't have a great reputation, I'm kind of new to this whole thing).
CM will probably get Mass Storage enabled at some point, but that still isn't an ideal solution.
Jelly Bean will offer true USB audio streaming, but from what I've read the device you are streaming to will also have to support it. Whether that support can be added via a firmware update or will require new hardware is something I haven't been able to figure out yet.
This is all very annoying since part of the reason I got my S3 was to finally upgrade the sound in my car. I know I can use an Aux or Bluetooth connection in the meantime, but if the Jelly Bean tech requires new hardware it will be a pain to sell my old hardware and re-install the new.
I guess at this point it's just waiting to see when/if headunits will support the Jelly Bean audio streaming.

The thing is, I don't have the money to get a new head unit.. I could just connect the aux to the unit. I also forgot to mention I have a Sony Xplod (Not sure of the model right now, but it's about 2 years old.)
I think I'm just forced to connecting aux and usb to keep it charged on my trips..
Mass Storage has been enabled for the International S3, so it's likely it will for the US version soon. That should solve a lot of your problems. Though as I said above, UMS is still not an ideal solution (but far superior to Aux or Bluetooth).

I'm a noob when it comes to Andriod.. I am a recovering iPhone user and do not know what most of the acronyms mean. I've looked around on google and can't find what they mean lol. OTG, MTP, and CM, what do they mean?
Also, is there a way to hurry up the process of me being verified for my new user account? The waiting 5 minutes is getting old... Thanks

Once you pass 10 posts the 5 minute limit will be lowered to 2 minutes.
OTG = On the Go http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_On-The-Go
MTP = Media Transfer Protocol, as opposed to Mass Storage. I'm not clear on the reason for using it since it seems like UMS is more useful in almost every way.
CM = Cyanogenmod. The most popular and widespread Android ROM.
Ahh ok thank you! I should be getting close to that haha. And I guess UMS is something like Universal Mass Storage?

[Q] USB DAC/audio

Hey, I've been through the forums searching out whether the i9100 has the capability to run its audio through a usb dac and have only come up with old and dead threads. This http://blog.jdslabs.com/?p=838 is saying that to utilize at lease their dacs you only have to either be compatible with usbaudioplayerpro or have a cyanogenmod rom (i'm guessing CM10/11). I've checked the compatibility list for the usbaudioplayer (http://www.extreamsd.com/USBAudioRecorderPRO/) and the i9100 isn't officially compatible because it has "No USB host mode" at term I think is synonymous with otg, and I've used an otg checker and my current setup (i9100 with http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...m-gt-i9100-resurrection-remix-v4-0-7-t1436854) has that capability. On top of this the resurrection remix 4.4.2 rom is based on CM11 and so that makes me think that it will have the usbaudio problem solved anyway. I hope that I haven't missed anything significant, and for those wondering, the reason I haven't posted this in the rr thread is that I need ten posts to post there. Hopefully someone can confirm that this is now possible so that I, and others interested can go about buying usb dacs to bypass the shoddy yamaha internal dac.
tldr; is it now possible to run a usb dac on the i9100 using the new kitkat roms (specifically http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...m-gt-i9100-resurrection-remix-v4-0-7-t1436854).
Thanks,
Luke

I've seen that you have always been on the answer end of these threads, hopefully you can tell me why this really is and what steve kondik's work has done for the situation as I've read that he solved the problem for CM (an idea backed up by the original link i posted). Why has his contribution made the difference on other models but not this one? So it's a hardware issue or? Sorry if you just end up repeating yourself but it's not quite making sense.
Thanks,
Luke
I've been on the answer ends on a lot of these threads because for the two yrs I used my S2 (I don't anymore), I was very keen to have USB DAC functionality for myself if it was possible. Yes, everyone is aware of what he's been able to do, but it isn't possible with this device due to hardware limitations.
Trust me, if it was possible, it would have been done by now, as you know you're not exactly the first person who would like this to work.
Edit - It hasn't solved the problem for CM period, it's solved the problem for a number of devices. If you don't believe me, flash CM & see if you can get it to work.
Sorry for the thread resurrection... I happend to browse across the following, which looks promising:
- Galaxy S2 DIY Car Dock with USB audio output (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skgEKS4uzWA)
- [HOWTO] Enable the car dock external audio without Samsung's Home apps by TheBeano (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980937)
- Fun with resistors (home/car dock mode + more) by TheBeano (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=820275)
I am also kinda interested in this.
So far it seems that my headset is being detected by my s2 running pac rom.
There is still no sound output.
I would say it is because the lack of usb audio drivers in our devices.
All that is needed is to compile the snd_usb_audio.ko module and load it.
From there on, I assume android can handle it well enough.
Otherwise we can use alsa directly.
Edit: After loading the module, sound works (from chroot) but I don't know how to tell android to output to the headset.

Anyone been able to do anything with a Facebook Portal?

Been looking at the Facebook Portal, it's got a USB-C port on the back but according to Facebook's support it's only used "in the factory", so I'm assuming maybe that's something they might use with a flashing tool to reset damaged units. Has anyone messed around with one/found out anything about how it might work? I've noticed that, at least with mine, if I hold down power and the volume up button while it's booting, the screen remains black but the mic light is still on. Thinking this may be some kind of recovery mode perhaps.

Oh definitely not. Wouldn't be caught dead buying one. XD Was gifted one as an early christmas gift by a friend, but trying to decide if it's something I can do anything with before I maybe... return it and get a better alexa-enabled device. Feeling really bad about that though considering they wanted to use it to communicate.
Ah-ha! Alexa enabled, but what powers it? Is it some open source thing? AOSP even?

From what I’ve been able to gather, it’s running on some form of AOSP with a custom Portal skin- haven’t been able to get much more info than that though as the info on the device past what FB has put out publicly is pretty slim. Definitely doesn’t surprise me that it’s an android device though considering that’s just about all FB seems to develop for outside of the web (Oculus Go, Facebook Home, etc.)
Would be really interesting to try using Discord on this device though, and possibly finding a way to disable FB functions. Might make it a good gift then, if not it’s making it really hard to hold onto it.
Edit: This is my source for AOSP, assuming it’s the “Android Open Source Framework” mentioned:
https://techcrunch.com/2018/10/08/facebook-portal/amp/
I got my hands on one (free gift from company) but I'm trying to figure out what to do with it too.
Hello everyone, sorry I am late to the party. It is definitely android. If you run the chromium browser and attempt to open something like a pdf file, chromium will give you an error and ask for download permissions. This error message also gives you a link to the applications settings page from where you get access to some of the settings. No permissions sadly. You can however go in to the battery optimization settings and filter for all apps and get a full list of everything installed. As can be seen in these images on imgur /a/QWqs0pP

We're stoked. We've been using the 15 inch Portal in our conference room. Hooked up a usb-c to HDMI adapter, ran it to our conference room 4K television and bam! Absolutely gorgeous.
Works flawlessly as an output, and even audio (as would be expected) is now running through the monitor.
Oh niiiice ! I actually asked facebook portal customer support, and they said nothin could be done with the usb c port ! It really is a shame cuz some people probably want to output to a bigger screen !
I want to try if usb c headphones and microphones will work. I don't have any around though !
I've tested and seen that I can use the port as a usb c PD charger, it charges my macbook pro and oneplus 6
Maybe we can figure out a way to use ADB to get us into the portal ?
---------- Post added at 05:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:51 PM ----------
Oh wait, never mind charging my macbook pro. It does so only intermittently, I should've guessed the power was too low !
So, any luck unlocking the bootloader or even getting ADB out the USB-C ?

USB-C to 3.5 mm audio only alternate mode?
Can anyone please test and let me know if a USB-C to 3.5mm analog audio jack also works - for 3.5 mm jack headphones or speaker out? More specifically, an active adapter because a passive one may not work. Such as this one: amazon.com/Tranesca-Headphone-Adapter-Compatible-Google/dp/B07M6Z2KJ4
What I do know from reading this thread is the Facebook Portal's:
- USB-C Video out (DisplayPort Alternate mode) to monitor works along with audio (monitor passthrough)
- It works as a USB-C power delivery charger
But if audio thru DisplayPort works means only audio to 3.5 mm jack will also work?
Interestingly, the official documentation (portalfb.me/2NAdtz1) claims the audio will continue to come from Portal's speakers. But people here claim it is transmitted to the monitor?
the portal burnt due to an electricity hazard overseas.
I just bought the newest Facebook Portal Mini. it comes with a browsers from Facebook. I was able to make a phone call using duo.google.com then the next day.. I lost permission to the camera: it keeps asking me for permissions.
I think they have some kind of firewall that blocks unusual behaviors

I don't really know how to do those things... But it tried scanning my portal for open ports, no ip adp connection possible. And then, with usb c connected nothing happens with adb. It can't seem to see it !
I tried enabling hidden developpers options by pressing a lot everywhere in the settings, but no luck !
Alrighty, I've got an update for you guys. It seems like FB locked out that PDF trick sadly. However, I found out that if you restart your portal and hold all three buttons down, then plug in the USB-C, it appears as a device named "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM3)". Based on what I've seen on a few threads here, that's a utility for reflashing and backing up device firmware. I believe we may be able to do stuff with this.
I am looking into getting the FB Portal TV. If the party on the other end of the connection is using their smart phone or tablet, does the image I am seeing become altered from wide screen to a vertical image
or does the unit adapt to keep the screen filled without becoming distorted in some way?

Have you been able to find out anything more with the qualcomm loader? I have been playing with mine and unable to get a utility to recognize is. It would be nice to be able to get get the fw off it.
Has anyone made anymore progress with this yet?

I have not made any progress at all. I keep checking to see if anyone has done anything at all, but I think these devices are not too popular. Hard to find any information on them at all
So I was able to get fasboot access to my Facebook Portal+ (1st Gen).
If you plug in the power and hold down the vol down + power button. It will show the portal logo on the screen and on a black box it says "Please Reboot...". If you connect to the usb-c port then it looks like there is fastboot access to the device. It's definitely locked down, but it's a start.
I've been trying to figure out how to get adb / sideload access for a while now and this is as close as I've been able to get. I'll let you know if I find out more.
