Moving to Q&A

I rooted my tab in Linux, running Virtualbox with a Windows install.

Mac is such an expensive OS, I would say parallels but that's not free.
Although doesn't Mac have a built in feature to install another virtual OS on it?

Virtualbox wants boot-file(eg: .iso) and I don't have it.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using Tapatalk

You need an ISO or....... you can attach to an optical drive and install from cd/dvd. It's in the config for the vm. You can also change this in the running vm.

Root with Linux?

I'm eagerly awaiting my S III which is on pre-order. This will be my first Samsung device. I've noticed on my prior Android devices (OG Droid, Droid Incredible, Droid X, Toshiba Thrive) how much difference there is in rooting, ROM'ing, CWM, etc., so I expect there to be a learning curve with the Samsung. Could someone take the time to explain the basics to a Samsung newbie? I see that to root I'll need an "ODIN" file. I only see these in windows .exe format and not in Linux. Is there an ODIN function for Linux?
Even I'm searching with the same thing. I've switched from htc and things get different. Its much simpler in Samsung. Even though the odin might run on linux using WINE, but I suppose every where they write that we also need drivers for the mobile already installed. I'm confused with how to install drivers.

Yep Odin is windows specific .. your gonna wanna use Heimdal. Though.. I think zedomax has a video showing hiw to do this on Linux. Haven't looked inti it myself.

How to use ODIN on Linux?

This is not really S3 related, I know, but it concerns the S3 in a way. Right, so I'm planning on moving to Linux again and leaving W7 since I never play any Windows games anyway on my laptop (I have my PS3 for that) so how will I go about flashing .tar files to my S3 when the need arises? I know ODIN doesn't work on Linux.

I can't answer the Linux question BUT you could always use Mobile Odin from the Play Store and do this directly on your phone. I've used it quite a lot when I haven't had access to a PC.
Regards
Oh yeah, I forgot all about Mobile Odin
you can't use ODIN on linux, use heimdall instead.
http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
Run the Odin file through the kitchen and you get a deodexed rom with root that you can flash in CWM
Have not tested but may be use wine to run Odin on *nix .. not sure it works or not .

I think you will struggle with the drivers, I haven't looked for them but I haven't seen them for download either.

Heimdall doesn't work on GS3, so you're pretty much stuck with mobile odin (which is basically a good thing ).
Edit: Apparently it works just fine!

Pretty sure it worked on Mac OS for me, Mountain Lion I think. Isn't the mac version quite similar to the Linux version?

Coolbeans, I couldn't get it to work a couple of months back on my Arch - most probably a user error.
I'll edit my previous post to avoid confusion.

If you have the s off windows version just run it from the windows administrator account and use the instructions as in unlimited.io, it worked for me that way.. I had 64bit aswell my 1sy attempt lead me to a soft brick cuz the s off process stopped in the middle so run it from administrator account

Once you learn more about it you will appreciate Ubuntu and Linux a whole lot more. Linux is no joke it is a great kernel if you didn't know already Android is based off Linux and you run it every day.
While installing ubuntu onto your pc just to s off seems inconvenient it is actually safer on Ubuntu since unlimited.io found a vulnerability and discontinued the Windows S off method and moved it to ubuntu.
If you get a windows version you won't get support from unlimited.io and not so much from xda since we respect their wish of not supporting the windows method.

[Q] Upgrading to 4.4.2 and keeping root on Mac

Is there a way to upgrade to 4.4.2 MK2 and still keep root on a Mac without using Jodin or Heimdall?

Just use Towelroot. It's an app that you install and doesn't require a PC, Mac, or anything else.

Visit the website with your phone and tap the lambda in the middle of the screen out well download an apk.
Install the app then run it and tap "make it rain"
After your phone reboots you should have root.
You might need to go to the play store and install supersu but I can't remember if it installs it automatically or not.

The problem I'm having is doing the upgrade to 4.4. I'm already rooted. I'm sorry my question was unclear!

Oh ok sorry. The only way to do it in a mac is heimdall or jodin.
You might could do it running Windows via parallels but I have been told that is very risky to use Odin over a virtual machine.
I would find a friend or relative with a Windows machine or just use the only two options for Mac.

I tried to use Heimdall but it won't open the tar.md5 file. I'm downloading Java 8 so maybe Jodin will work now. Surprisingly, all my friends just use their smart phones as a computer. I'm the only tech nerd out of the bunch
Thanks again
