What beren said. Goto Settings -> Applications -> USB Settings -> Select Kies mode.
You have to unplug the usb cable but your device will tell you that anyway.
Thanks I put it in Kies mode but still doesn't connecting said MTP driver can't install.
The solution
This is the solution I got from http://www.thegalaxytabforum.com/index.php?/topic/504-help-with-kies/
The Tab needs to be in "Kies mode" when connected for Kies to be able to work. To make this possible do this:
Unplug your GTab and go to Settings > Wireless & Network > USB settings
Select "Ask on Connection" -- this is the most flexible option.
When you connnec the GTab select Kies Mode and then click on "Mount" if the Mount button is displayed.
Start Kies if it doesn't start automatically, then it should work.
WARNING: Kies' initialization phase is currently buggy, at least on my 64-bit Windows 7 machines. You may need to click away 20-30 error messages and confirm that the application is allowed to make changes on your computer 10-15 times before it starts. Once the error and confirmation messages have stopped it seems to work OK, however.
Galaxy S + Kies
After a few minutes of trial and error here's what I did to get it working.
1) Wireless and Network -> Kies Mode
2) Applications -> Development -> Disable USB Debugging
3) Go to Home Scren
4) Plug into PC with Kies running, Kies should detect and connect
Having downloaded the programme to unlock my Samsung GT19000, then setting the phone in debugging mode,Kies keep on saying (cannot connect to debugging mode please select Kies pc studio mode on the mobile and reconnect) USB settings on my phone is on Kies. Any Ideas
My phone does not connect to Samsung Kies via USB. I get the message:
"Reconnect the device in Samsung Kies (PC Studio) mode. Current connection mode not supported by Kies."
How do I put this phone into Samsung Kies Mode?
It was doing this when I first got my phone then the other day it suddenly started working perfectly somehow, now I am getting this message again.
EDIT: [Solved] You have to disable USB debugging mode in order to connect to Kies.
Easy way turn phone off turn phone on fire up Kies then connect phone .

Thanks, but I already tried that a couple of times...
turn off your USB debugging then close all running apps using task manager.
it will work then, Rumble
Thanks, worked right away!

I had the same problem for days with my desktop running vista 32. I must have removed and reinstalled kies and/or the samsung drivers in every permutation possible. Finally got it working by using a 2nd PC, my laptop. I installed kies on the laptop (also vista 32) and the connection worked on the first shot, so then I went back to my desktop and updated all the drivers for my SGS2 manually. When windows asked for a path to search for my drivers, I pointed it to the laptop's C drive inside of the Windows\System32 folder. The desktop apparently grabbed whatever the best drivers were from the laptop and I was off and running.

Settings->wireless and network->USB Settings and enable the Samasung Kies..
So dumb that we have to search and find options our self..Samsung is too stupid to provide the detailed explanation of issues and solutions...!

I have a Samsung Galaxy S from Bell and do not have this option either.
Also, Kies only sees the device when the USB debugging is turned on but gives the "Reconnect the device in Samsung Kies (PC Studio) mode. ..."
So far, no luck and I'm stumped.
I've tried:
Rebooting laptop after Kies install
Disabling Symantic firewall
Rebooting phone
Connecting when phone is turned off - Kies does not see the device
Connecting with USB debugging turned off - Kies does not see the device
Verified that no apps are running (but a number of services are running)
Kies connection troubleshooting which reinstalls the drivers (this takes a LONG time!)
Details:
Model number: GT-I9000M
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: I9000UGJH2
Kernel version: 2.6.29 [email protected] #2
Build number: ECLAIR.UGJH2
Kies version: 2.1.0.11095_121

UPDATE:
On my model, the Kies option is buried down Settings->About Phone->USB Settings->Samsung Kies.
Turning this on did the trick after some "twiddling" (turning on off, backing out and in and watching Kies/Windoze update the drivers).
I seem to be good-to-go. Hope this helps others.
Cheers!
I don't see the Thank You button under your Post, so Thank you very much, it worked like a charm!!!!
Can't imagine that i faced this problem with my SG2 and the solution was simpler than i would think, i just changed the USB port where i connected my SG2; i.e. try to connect from another port.
I've tried all this and nothing works. It some times says connecting device but never does.
I have USB debugging off, tried turn on/off method. My phone is on 2.3.3 and I want to update it.
The phone has a picture of a USB and says connected. Says "press the home key to quit Samsung Kies"
Says MTP Application at the top.
This is all I get...
Second picture with error is what I got as I was typing this message.
I also get a pop-up saying Activating USB mode will deactivate BT, continue? Should I hit yes or no. I tried both and nothing works.
I'm on 2.3.4
I9100XXKI1
EDIT: after pulling the battery for 100th time it worked.
CANNOT CONNECT MY Galaxy Sii in Kies

Hey,
I'm not sure which Version has which option so...
It's listening like u set some option under "settings>USB connection"
If it's like I think, u have to put there the point "Kies" or "pc studio".
(But the new Version have this as default and u have to select mastorage if u want to use as it....)
So check this settings and if all is fine (or u can't choose anything than "connect mastorage") reinstall Kies and try again.
CHEERS
Turn USB mass storage mode off then reboot phone and connect to KIES with Samsung cable .

Today a new update for samsung kies was released.Everything normal till now,i have connected my S3 to PC and a error came up..
Mode unsuported or so ,please enable USB debugging.
Now it remains at Connecting screen...and doesn't go further...
Any idea why samsung would want it's users to connect in debugging mode ??
Here is the full kies message when debugging is not enabled
Reconnect the device in Samsung Kies(PC Studio Mode)
Current connection setting not supported by KIES.
Check the USB settings.
Settings -> Applications -> Development -> Usb debugging (x)
