go to the correct thread and download the RUU for that SW version and then instal and you should be set to roll... be sure to rename the file and install it to your root to let your hboot install it on its own

I have downloaded the official ROM from sprint for sw 2.08 but now you say I have to rename it? Can I install it like every custom ROM?

That wouldn't be a rom I don't think if you dl it from sprint. It should be an exe file you run from your pc. Just plug your phone into your pc and run the exe you downloaded. It's called an ruu. It will erase root and your recovery and return you back to stock.

I'm not getting what you're saying here. I ran the 2.17 ruu and then I tried the 2.08 and it wouldn't install, I thought it was because it was older, but maybe I'm missing something. What file do you rename, the ruu? Install it to my root? What does that mean? Did it fail to install because I'm 1.5 s-on,?

I've found that anyone who reported random reboots was using the pg86img.zip files through bootloader to upgrade/downgrade the sw version. It's not that all pg86imgs don't work properly, its just that some don't and I don't know which ones. I'd strongly recommend using an RUU.exe file from your computer to go back to 2.08. I soft bricked my phone for a few hours also trying to install a pg86img.zip (but that was a dumb error on my part, and the RUU.exe fixed my stupidity )
EDIT: if the file you downloaded is an executable file (.exe), run it from your computer and you don't have to rename it anything. If you downloaded a .zip file, it has to be renamed to PG86IMG.zip and you have to put it in the root directory of your SD card

You need another PC image you relocked now so there is no rom on the phone you need to snag the latest PC86IMG stock rom this will get you going man. What you flashed was a stock recovery from the looks of it.
If your relocked will say so in Hboot at the top you need the latest one of these http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1447839

What I did at that point was power off my phone, take out my SD card, and put it in a usb adapter. Connect it to your PC then place the PG86IMG.zip in the root of your SD card. Place the SD card back in your phone power up and the phone will pick up the file and update all on its own.

[Q] phone does not ask to upgrade PG86IMG.zip

Ok so I have been following unknownforces downgrade thread for a while already but ran into a problem. My EVO is brand new never been unlocked (atleast as far as I know) it says locked on the bootloader and s-on. When I took the 2.17 zip and put it on my SD card and rebooted to bootloader nothing happened I mean it did read it and check it but it did not ask me to upgrade. So my question is why didn't it ask me to upgrade and should I try and flash the 2.08 ruu EXE and start from scratch then see if it will ask to upgrade the pg86img

Did you rename the whole zip to PG86IMG.zip or did you take out the system image and rename that?
And if your on 2.17 base, you can't take a 2.08 ruu without changing your main version.

I had the same problem..it would not detect the PG86IMG.zip for nothing.. i tried like 20 something times..renamed with Pc/Astro file explorer/Root Explorer nothing would give. I even redownloaded it with Pc and my E3D and still a no go..BUT.... I finally got it to detect it. Cant remember what i did but the last thing i remember doing was a battery pull and did the Power/+ Volume to boot Into Bootloader and it worked..but still not sure if that solved it or not..

Hey guys,
i'm having the same problem.
I'm on hboot 1.53.0007 unlocked with htcdev and S-Off.
With hboot unlocked and also with re-locked the phone doesn't install the PG86IMG.zip file.
I saved the file definitively on the root of the sd-card and also it's name is correct.
I'd appreciate any kind of help.
Thanks for reading and replying.

The only suggestion that I thought of is to make sure the file doesn't have a double extension like PG86IMG.zip.zip. If file extensions are hidden in Windows, it will look correct but not be.

How to Unroot?

Gotta take the phone back to Sprint and I know they're not gonna like that it's rooted.
I haven't seen a guide yet on how to Unroot.

What do I need to do before I take it back to them?

The RUU means OTA, right?
If so, I already tried flashing it thru TWRP and it didn't work.
If not, I just downloaded it. How do I run it?
Edit: I just watched a video on how to rub it using ADB, which is USUALLY no problem.. but I'm helping my brother do this over the phone who lives 700+ miles away from me and he has no idea how to do anything to do with phones.
So is there an easy way to run the RUU for even the biggest phone n00bs?
none
you put it on your sd-card, boot the phone to h-boot, make sure you get the right ruu for your bootloader, you will want to boot into BL and get that, then google it, I have seen these RUU's so I know there out there.
Download the right one, put it on the sd card, then when you boot into BL it will automatically grab it and run it. DO NOT touch your phone while it's running, if it loses power, it will brick it.
Afterwards delete the ruu file off the SD Card
Piece a cake

Thank you. So does this mean I should rename it to P87MPG.zip or whatever it looks for when I put it on my SD Card?
NO, a ruu is an exe that you run from a windows pc that your phone is plugged into. If he is that noob then its prob the easiest way for him. If he has hboot 1.12, then dl the oldest one. If he has any other hboot then just run the newest since it won't matter at that point.

theres ruu that u can run on your pc and also ruu that u put on the root of your sdcard and flash through bootloader..

Thank you for the updated info.
How do I know which HBoot each of those belong to?
I believe he has HBoot1.15. So I can just run the latest one, which would be:
RUU_JEWEL_CL_ICS_40_S_Sprint_WWE_2.13.651.1_Radio_1.12.11.0809_NV_SPCS_2.45_003_release_277028_signed.exe
?
Tried running 2 RUU's and have the same problem on both.
Keep getting the "Error 155" which according to the "View Read Me" is:
ERROR [155~159]: IMAGE ERROR
One of these error messages will appear when you use the incorrect RUU to update and the image file size is larger than the Flash ROM size. In this case, download the correct RUU version and try again.
Any help?
EDIT:
Nvm I figured it out. I had to "fastboot oem lock" before running the RUU.
There are no clear instructions ANYWHERE on XDA on how to run the RUU's.

cannot flash PG86IMG.zip

i am finally s-off thanks to Juopunutbear and unlimited.io......
i figured that i would try flashing from Juopunutbear 1.58.5858 hboot to eng 1.04 hboot....shockingly enough i was successful on the first attempt,,,
loaded the PG86IMG.zip file to the root of my sd card and went without a hitch....
i got brave and was gonna do another hboot,,so,,i renamed the the next file to PG86IMG.zip just like the last time and booted into fastboot and..........nothing,,,,,,,,,hmmmm,,,,so i tried again,,,and nothing,,,,,,thought i had a bad download so i downloaded from another source ...and nothing....
well,,i thought,,theres alot i can do with the eng 1.04 hboot so i decided to change my radio ,,,just to figure out how all this works,,,,downloaded the radio,,,renamed it to PG86IMG.zip,,,,,booted into fastboot and,,,,nothing,,the same as before.....so,,,all of a sudden my fastboot wont recognize the PG86IMG.zip files and i have no idea why....
any help would be greatly appreciated

i figured it out,,,,,,for a DOS guy i'm kinda proud of myself.....LOL
when you rename any hboot file or ruu file to <filename>.zip if you look at that files properties the actual file would be called ..
<filename>.zip.zip.....
because windows recognizes certain files without an extension so one isnt needed...
so i renamed my filename to just PG86IMG and didnt put an extension of .zip on it and put it in the root of my sd card and whalah......instant success

[Q] Getting "Error [140]: Bootloader Version Error" when I try to downgrade my HBoot

[Q] Getting "Error [140]: Bootloader Version Error" when I try to downgrade my HBoot
Okiedoke. So, I've got a little experience with the Evo 3D, but my last one was shoddily done and I don't think I ever even attained S-OFF on it, so when I had to get mine replaced by Sprint, I figured I'd follow a guide and do this thing right.
I first followed the HTC method of unlocking my bootloader and rooting the device, and then installed TWRM. I was using my phone for about a week before I just today decided I had enough time to look at these instructions and follow them. I successfully used this PG86IMG file (from this thread) to brick my device, followed the instructions from the original thread up to 27, and then realized I might have a problem on my hands. I can't boot my phone into the OS anymore (I get a sudden slowdown and then freeze of the boot animation before it restarts itself), but I can still get into the bootloader and Fastboot. So, I figured, why not just run the 1.13 RUU EXE in Fastboot? So I tried, but every time I try to run an RUU EXE (I've tried several, both 1.13 and 2.17 versions), after the RUU pushes the file to the phone and checks signatures I get error 140. I saw that Unknownforce said here that these instructions are "extremely dated" and to use the new ones in his newer thread, but I'm not sure where to pick up.
In short, I would love it if someone could recognize what the next step I need to take is. Ask me for any further information I haven't provided, I'll be more than glad to help you guys help me!
I'm having a similar issue, the only difference between our issues being that I get Error 131: CUSTOMER ID ERROR. Still working on how to fix it.

I tried this two different ways:
Got a 1.13 PG86IMG ZIP from Shipped ROMs, renamed to PG86IMG and put on my SD card, but my phone didn't want anything to do with it (it would load and check it, but then kick me back out to the main bootloader screen). Then I downloaded a 1.13 RUU EXE and extracted the "rom" file from it, renamed and slapped on card. Phone loads and checks correctly, but then returns the "Main version is older!" error.

Then your misc version didn't downgrade as it should have. Go to the main thread and flash the firmware zip file that's listed there, it will put you up to 1.58 hboot, then start that process from scratch.

Okiedoke. Just to verify (sorry for being thick), when you say "Main Thread" you're talking about this one, right? I ask because the only firmware I see there is for Virgin, and I'd rather keep Sprint firmware on my phone (unless it really, truly doesn't change anything but the name).
Also, your method requires launching a Linux distro, yes? Is it OK if it's off a live USB, like the Ubuntu installer OS? For some reason I can't get my machine to cooperate when I try to install a permanent Linux OS (something to do with UEFI settings, I think).

I actually ended up pulling an old laptop out from storage and putting Ubuntu on that so I can have an actual workstation. I ran the PG86IMG you mentioned, which got my phone back up and running with HBOOT 1.58. Then I followed all of your instructions to the letter, down to where you say to run the 1.13 RUU EXE. I tried running that on Ubuntu using WINE, but I kept getting an error. Then I tried running it on Windows 8, but I can't seem to get the EXE to detect my phone is connected. Then I even tried running the RUU in a WinXP virtual machine, but I can't seem to get that to work either. I then tried simply using the 1.13 ZIP as PG86IMG, but I'm getting the same error where after it loads and scans the file, it kicks me out to the main bootloader screen with no warnings or error messages.
At this point, what would be the better option? Should I attempt Revolutionary and get S-Off, then redo the instructions? Or should I do something else? Do I even need to install the 1.13 RUU? I assume I do, because my phone is unusable if I don't...

If the bootloader is not saying anything about the zip file it's not a valid signed zip. Find another copy of it or extract it from the ruu exe. Run the exe and open up the temp folder and search for rom.zip then rename to PG86IMG(.zip) and put on sdcard. Then try again. You need special drivers for windows 8, which is why that didn't work, the other two are emulated versions of Windows, and don't have the proprietary drivers to work properly either. So unless you have access to another windows pc that isn't 8, your only option is to get the sdcard the correct file.

No dice. I can't change my CID without getting an error, presumably because I can't HTCDev unlock (when I get to the final step, I get success on fastboot but never the prompt on the phone).
