[Q] Question about pulling kernel - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

So, I'm just starting to try and learn more about developing, and so I'm starting by pulling apart a stock ROM and well... Figuring stuff out, I guess. I found a guide for dumping the system.rfs file, but I can't figure out which file I need to dump to make the kernel zImage file. And maybe I'm going about it all wrong, Iono. If anybody could help, or point me toward a guide I'd be very appreciative.

4.0 or 5.0?
/dev/block/mmcblk0p11 on 5.0
??? on 4.0

For the 4.0 its /dev/block/bml7
So to pull you would run "su" in terminal emulator or adb shell
and
Code:
if=/dev/block/bml7 of=/sdcard/zImage bs=4096

[REQUEST] ROM for LG Optimus M

I have an LG Optimus M and it would be appreciated if someone could develop a ROM for it. You can find the LG Optimus community at androidforums .com/lg-optimus-m Thanks alot.
I recently purchased the Optimus M and am seconding this request for a ROM.
I would also like to see this happen. Thanks in advance!
Maybe you guys should setup a beer fund.
By the way, I'll have a look at it.
Edit:
And yes, I've taken this from a topic on Androidforums, but it is true. I don't have an Optimus M myself, so:
1) I need a dump of your system.img (replacement apks for people that deleted them by accident).
2) Boot.img (which includes the necessary files like the kernel).
3) Splash.img (to take a look or change metro splash screen.
4) recovery.img (to make a modified recovery).
Edit2:
And a phone to test it on. Beer fund anyone?
i have manage to get a bin not img file and all of the apks
ill send it through message

Thanks dude, that files are vital! I've already found a custom recovery, now I'll just have to optimize it for the Optimus M. The key-layout is different but that can easily be fixed by replacing default.prop (or build.prop, not completely sure. I can't check it now, I'm on another laptop now)
I'd really appreciate if people could help testing the recovery once it has been published. It won't brick your device.
I would be willing to test it, as long as nothing bad could happen.

There's a slight little chance it explodes like a nuke when it boots, but except for that little issue, it won't do any damage.
Hey, just thought I'd jump in. I'm pretty much new to smartphones. Since I found xda, I've managed to read enough to learn root explorer, root my Optimus M, delete the bloatware, change the boot, learn adwlauncher and download rom manager.
So how can I help make a custom ROM happen? I think I know enough to flash my own device, except for the recovery/backup stuff worries me.
*Also, my roommate deleted browser.apk on his optimus m (rooted obv), factory reset a few times and has the usual broke market/google problems. Any hope for his phone; he has phone insurance w/metro.
Thank you

I think I'm going to base it on an Optimus S/One ROM, all the Optimus phones are pretty similar under the hood.

Yeah I was already thinking of it. I'll take it in consideration. I'm hoping to finish the recovery today!
Edit:The recovery is finished, I replaced the kernel and build.prop. It will be online soon, with a guide included!

Wait wait wait. BTW hi fellow dudes from androidfourms.
You said after the update. Is he working with the files from 2.2.1 and not 2.2?
We need a custom recovery, kernel and rom for 2.2!! Not the evil 2.2.1.
Plus the source for 2.2 for the Optimus M has been released and can be found here: www .lg.com/global/support/opensource/opensource.jsp and choosing "Mobile Phones" from the dropdown menu and typing in LGMS690
If this guy needs the 2.2 files and not the 2.2.1 file they are obtainable.
I was gonna test this recovery but not if it's the 2.2.1 version.

I'm in contact with this guy. We're discussing the plans and who does what.
I'm in contact with this guy too as he is also an active member of the androidfourms sub-forum for the Optimus M and has since downgraded his phone back to 2.2 after he gave you the Boot.img, System.img & Recovery.img. Those ones were more than likely from 2.2.1 which running stock was unabled to even be rooted.
You say you want testing done but by your wording you seem to want to keep this all hush, hush. If that's the case no bother. If you want no extra help then so be it.
I will provide he proper files for 2.2 though.

no sorry my bad does are the 2.2 files not the 2.2.1..that i pull out of the androidforums
So then this recovery is built from 2.2 files correct? And have you personally tested it?
F*** it we'll do it live!!!!! LOL!
I'm about to flash this thing to my phone even though we have no custom rom to use with it yet. Pray for a good outcome.

Anybody know how to extract the kernel from boot.img?

I've been searching all over for a way to extract the kernel from the boot.img and I'm coming up empty-handed. Every method I've tried always results in errors. I've came to the conclusion through research that the Samsung boot.img is different than most other devices' boot.img. I know that there are ways to flash a kernel without decompiling the boot.img, but I am trying to figure this out as a learning experience, so please don't give me instructions on how to flash a different kernel.
Does anyone have experience decompiling the Samsung Fascinate boot.img? Can you post instructions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
i was under the impression that the boot.img was the kernel. but if you wanted to see inside it i would think you could mount it like any other image, i would try opening it in ultraiso, that should show any files in it and allow it to be extracted. but this is all speculation.
If no body beats me to it, I can upload some Linux scripts that will work for you! In the morning though I got to get some rest... and yes Samsung boot.img are different than others

[Q] badly need the bell stock .tar system and all for sgh-i717 Bell

Hello all ... im still pretty much a noob when it comes to cell phone .. i just bought a Samsung galaxy note (bell sgh-i717m in Canada)
I wanted to have access to Root for the applications and the cpu speed change (was at 1.12 ghz and supposed to be 1.5 ghz).
I read a lot of posts and found in majority things from Mashi, Da_G etc.
After i tried one method with the odin 1.85 and file AT&T Note Root.zip (532 meg) which was said to just give root access and not change the whole phone ...
After rebooting my phone ... ATT animation at the boot !!! and after that a big big lag when i try to type in text or try to type in number even on dial pad to make a call !!!
HELLPPP !! lol i would not mean that much the AT&T animation but the whole phone with it and that HUGE lag !
Is there any way for me to bring that back to Bell stock ? if so, any of you would have that huge file for me to flash my beast back to Bell with a .tar file through ODIN or other ways if you know something that could help me ?
Update 1 ... i found this file GalaxyNoteRootI717.zip which helped me to get rid of the lag by flashing with their file but i am still stuck with AT&T applications and all = still missing the Bell system and all
Thanks in advance,
zykio.
I would help but i have no clue as how to rip the whole rom.

Here is what i got from DA_G for that purpose i know that a ton of people would like to have the Whole system and such of Bell stock like me to get it back as it was from Bell.
From DA_G
"From adb inside booted ROM:
(note system.img will be 1GB, compress it before upload)
Code:
adb shell dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p24 of=/sdcard/system.img
adb shell dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p22 of=/sdcard/recovery.img
adb shell dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p8 of=/sdcard/boot.img
adb pull /sdcard/system.img
adb pull /sdcard/recovery.img
adb pull /sdcard/boot.img
If you have installed my rooted recovery or kernel, don't bother pulling those images as they will have been overwritten. Currently we have everything for AT&T, Rogers kernel, and TELUS kernel. Need Rogers system/recovery, bell kernel/recovery, and telus system/recovery to build stock archives for those."
Thanks to DA_G. and thanks to you if you can make that image ...

THanks for replying Wish777 ...
What i was trying to do is to repair a mistake i did ...
Wanting to just root my Bell SGH-I717M i did a whole system flash instead of just what i needed for the root and now instead of a phone that brings me Bell for the whole of the phone i have AT&T all across ... AT&T ready 2 go if i reset, AT&T Navigator for the gps .. etc etc .. the icon for the radio is not the same when i get on 4G or LTE etc ..
Overall, now it is not laggy and it is rooted but i miss the rest of it to be back as a Bell Stock but rooted.
If someone pull the Bell stock like we have in Canada for the Galaxy note SGH-I717 and let me put my hand on that i would be back to a phone like i bought from Bell but rooted then.
Thanks again to whoever will help me with that

I did thank you wish777 for your search as i know, trust me, that it is not easy to find the whole nine yards as Bell ... People will still need the untouched (if possible) Bell everything (probably people like Mashi, Da_G etc... would love it too) to fix problems or figure other stuff around for Bell users like me.
For now i got files on my pc .. ok it is Bell all the way but with root and CMW4 for me it is ok for now as i want it rooted and with Bell (counter trigger and stuff is not really relevant for me after the mistake i did = too late until they find a way to reverse it) ...

Update: I have some good news and some bad news (mostly bad)
Good News: I have unlocked the bootloader
Bad News: the unlock is not permanent(?) but I might be able to fix that, just need some the run the following comands in terminal emulator and give me the files that were made:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p22 of=/sdcard/boot.img
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p23 of=/sdcard/recovery.img
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p32 of=/sdcard/devlog.img
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p29 of=/sdcard/system.img
If anycone can run these (on stock w/o recovery that would be great!

You don't need a computer it's fairly simple just download terminal emulator from the play store and run the commands the output files will be on the root of the internal storage so if you could just upload those that would be great

Yep. That's for an ME7. My dev phone is OYUAMDK. As far as I understand, the MDK root methods wipe the recovery or the kernel, depending on the method. I think the OP is asking for both to be intact so he can get copies. I'm not rooting until I hear from the OP.

and here's the thread I started about the unlocked bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2551863
If you can get root that will be great because we've tried everything that doesn't require dev work like exploiting and etc. We don't even have CWM or TWRP either.

Yeah, I currently don't have one, and I figured you guys had root already.
I'm the only developer for the Dell Streak 7.

We would highly appreciate it if you were able to develop for the Dell Venue 7 and 8 (pretty much the same tablet, difference is screen size and SoC speed, the 7" uses Intel Atom Z2560 and the 8" uses Intel Atom Z2580).

Yeah I know, I'm the one who pestered them to put it up. Got the lawyer letters to prove it.
