I upgraded via FOTA to official I9100XXLPQ, ICS 4.0.3.
I noticed immediately there is a lot more battery drain than before. The culprit is Exchange Services, which keeps on waking the phone very often. I have set my Exchange account syncing option to sync every four hours, but it seems to work in real time push mode instead. In battery stats I can see that the percentage of battery used and wake up time for Exchange Services increases steadily.
I did a quick google search and found out this problem is major PITA with Nexus S and ICS. Can't say how disappointed I am. Only workaround I've found is to manually disable Exchange Services in Settings-Apps.
Seems that this upgrade is not for features or usability. It is solely meant to circumvent Apple patent lawsuits and is absolutely rubbish inside. I don't want to go into deeper discussion of bugs and worsened features I've discovered. This email battery drain thing is definitely biggest showstopper in my case. I really need my corporate email from Exchange server and disabling ES is not a feasible workaround.
Question: Is there an easy way to downgrade an unrooted SGSII to pre-ICS firmware?
Not very helpful, but I have the exact same problem om my SGS2, battery drains after 8 hours, compared too 36 hours before, and I had push-mode activated before as well. I hope somebody finds a fix for this.
Yep. Find/get the PC version of Checkfus (search for it on here/Google) which will enable you to download the latest firmware available for your carrier/country (assuming they haven't released ICS yet, if they have, we'll cross that bridge if we get to it). Flash said firmware following instructions here.
Back to GB. Done.

Thanks! Will try that.
EDIT: LOL; Google Play crashed while downloading Checkfus. Reboot and try again. Now Checkfus hangs indefinitely while downloading presets. And my battery is soon dead...
I had similar problem with Exchange battery drain. I managed to fix mine...
You can see what I did on my blog post ...

I have a potential solution
I noticed that my emails were not coming up on my Hotmail account using the standard email app on my galaxy s2. The ROM I'm using is the Resurrection remix 1.0. My battery used to last only 3/4 hour. Now, when I clear my memory, Exchange services stop running which gives me a nice long battery life. When I start the email app, I can see that on my network bars, I see the up and down arrows constantly on, meaning data is coming in n out the phone. As soon as I close exchange services, these arrows disappear. This clearly shows that there has been a problem with syncing the email to the phone and for some reason its constantly probably trying to fetch these emails. What I did was, delete the email addresses connected to the app, and then connected the emails to the phone again. I put it on WiFi so that all the emails would sync properly, when I see that the arrows on the WiFi signal bars are gone, I knew that the emails were synced properly. Since then I've had no issue with battery drain
Hope This helps!
By the way, this was the first time it had happened to me. I had reinstalled the rom on my phone due to testing out others. I originally had Resurrection 1.0 with all emails connected, no issue at all. Then tested some newer roms, then went back to resurrection 1.0. So i'm sure its just a sync problem. Just delete the connected email and reconnect it the the phone, and let all the emails sync properly in one go!

That's a statement, not a question!
If you need some help, more information is going to be needed. I presume from your statement that you are unable to download any applications from the Market over WiFi?
If that's the case:
1. Does it work over the cellular network?
2. What precisely happens over WiFi?
Regards,
Dave
I noticed this same issue today as well. Over the cellular network or wifi, i can't download or update apps. When I check on the status of the app after trying to download it, it just says it's downloading with no end in sight. I can use the browser, check email, update weather, etc... but, the market is 'useless'. I'm running a stock hero.
it works over wifi but takes ages to start, sometimes it starts inmidiatly and sometime it takes a while. i'm not sure where the problem is. but maybe this will be fixed with the new market.
Try starting Google Talk to see if this causes the downloads to start - I've heard of numerous cases where this has "cured" the problem, presumably because some of the GTalk components are common to the Market. It may help, it may not, but it is worth a try.
Regards,
Dave
I know this isn't an option for some, but I just decided to flash the modaco 2.2 rom and market is working fine. I did notice my LEDs were not working today so that kind of pushed me to flash the rom again. I kept the original radio (updating the radio to the latest a couple weeks ago meant I couldn't use my data connection :S) and it's working fine.

HI All,
As the subject says: Is there any ROM for the SGS2 that will NOT drain the battery sooner or later when I'm push syncing one or more activesync Exchange accounts.
I'm using touchdown at the moment....forwarding a number of other accounts to it and it still gets to the point where the battery drains and Android OS usage goes up. I've also tried enhanced email and the original Samsung email app.
Without activesync all is well and once enabled it eventually goes apesh1t.....
I sure hope this is fixed in ICS but is there a proper working ROM I can use in the meantime?
TIA
Hi,
Not sure what ROM you are currently using but I also experience this when I was on stock 2.3.3. I later updated to stock 2.3.6 but still experience this drain with exchange setup. So, I did a factory reset (twice but maybe once is enough) and format my usb storage (not sd card and not sure if this is needed). I then setup my exchange company email again and to my amazement, the drain is fixed. It's not draining at 7-10%/hr anymore. Hope this helps.
Ever since I got my first Android device (Galaxy Nexus) I had the problem that Gmail and Google Talk just often won't notify me about new messages. It works fine sometimes but often there is a delay between a few seconds and several hours until it finally notifies me (if at all that is).
It's basically freaking useless. I just can't rely on it so I end up checking for messages and mail manually every few minutes.
Things that don't affect the problem:
Device and Android Version. Plenty of people reported this problem and it's just not limited to one device or version.
If the screen is turned off or not. It even stops working while Talk is open (not in the background).
How the phone connects to the internet. At home it's using the same connection as my PC, while it just won't notify me of an new e-mail the Talk client on the PC manages it without problems.
ROM/Kernel don't seem matter either. Also did plenty of factory resets.
All I can find are old and/or unanswered threads.
Like those:

I'd have ditched Android by now if there would be a good alternative. But it's either Android, iOS or Windows Phone...
Sign out of google talk and gmail.do a battery pull, then a factory reset, then try again.

my advice. backup what you need(ie. text messages) and just clear data, revert to stock image

I don't really get how this could help. Don't feel like doing yet another reset unless it could really have an effect.

ROM and Kernel don't seem to matter. That includes for example stock, Cyanogen and franco kernel.
Did a factory reset like 100 times before, just this time logged out first. Didn't help, how unexpected.
Another option, contact sprint, have them do a. Profile refresh. Also update ur prl twice. Now that I think about, it could be a slight network issue in connection with ur device (hard to explain)
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
I'm in Europe. No sprint here.
I'll replace my Nexus with an S III today. Guess I'm about to find out if it's affected too.
Will probably be hard to do any further tests with the Nexus because my SIM is going to have a little meeting with a scissor.
Didn't get too many messages yet but some of them were definitely several minutes late. Guess the S III is affected too. Just great.
Am I the only person with this problem?
Still happening and renders the phone mostly useless.
At least some ideas on how to pinpoint the problem?
To begin I love this ROM, it removes all the bloat and looks great; I just have a few problems I can't seem to resolve.
1. When I first set up my google account I managed to sync my gmail, contacts, etc. just fine to the phone. However when I tried to use either Google Plus or Google Now I was receiving both connection errors or security errors (Couldn't sign in - A problem occurred while communicating with Google Servers.). I managed to solve the latter by removing the network time synchronization options, however the connection problem persists. If I leave these options disabled all of my google apps cease to function so I've re-enabled them. Note at no point in time did my data stop working, I can browse the net just fine on the phone.
I have noticed that someone did post about similar issues in the main thread for the rom, however I was unable to find the solution they used to solve the problem. I would appreciate any help that could be provided.
If it is of any help I did attempt to flash Speed Rom, and it doesn't have these issues, so it leads me to believe it is some sort of configuration error.
2. GPS doesn't appear to be getting a lock. I'm indoors so this may be the reason for it not working, however the icon shows that it has gathered a lock, but my accuracy remains at 30 meters. I will test this further when I am out and about tomorrow to see if it works any better.
1. This problem came from Google server that has been widely reported on other forums as well. Honestly I don't know how to fixed it but I would recommend you try to re-flash the rom. Perhaps the data were save while Google server acted up and hence it saved to your phone. I personally turn-off the Google Now since it consumed too much battery though.
2. GPS: Download GPS Status & Toolbox or Faster Fix to get the right regional for your location. read the description when downloading those app since they may required Busybox installed
In order for GPS fast and accurate locked, sometime you need to turn-on Google Location service
Good luck
First and foremost, thank you for your response.
I did as you suggested and re-installed the rom. This time before doing anything else I enabled only my wifi and attempted to add an account right away.
System Settings > Accounts & sync > ADD ACCOUNT
Doing this left me with the following message:
"Couldn't sign in
Can't establish a reliable connection to the server.
This could be a temporary problem or your android device may not be provisioned for data services. If it continues, call Customer Care."
Note this is over wifi not 3G. I have tried a few times to re-flash this rom and that doesn't seem to help. Any other idea's?
Did you, by any chance, turn-on data in setting>mobile data ?
This last time I didn't. Since I was using wifi I figured I wouldn't need to turn on my data?

Doesn't hurt to try my friend
By turning on 3G I have managed to log into my account and have it sync. However I am still getting a "Sign-in error".
Also the browser was unable to sync so I've disabled that. Now when I launch Google Plus I get the following:
"No connection
Couldn't connect to the server."
And with Google Now I'm getting
"Network error..."
Had this problem earlier too. It happened to me because I didn't do a data wipe when upgrading from Craigtuts earlier rom. HTH

Just a quick update, I have managed to get this ROM working.
There was suggestion in the original thread, by Ninjistix, for this ROM suggesting the installation of SpeedROM 7.8. Once installed go ahead and log into your google account, then flash this ROM by "formatting" / "wiping" everything except data. THIS DID NOT WORK FOR ME.
Out of desperation, I decided to restore my backed up STOCK rom. After doing so I, I logged into my google account and found that everything was working, no sign-in errors from anything at all. So I wiped everything EXCEPT data, flashed this rom and its been working perfectly since.
I'd like to thank Ninjistix for inspiring my fix and craigtut for making such a beautiful rom. Hopefully one of these two methods works for everyone else trying to flash this ROM.

thanks for the shout out, i was just coming here to direct you to one of my other post's related to that annoying sign-in error, we still haven't figured out the main reason behind it yet, but i as long as we have the work around of keeping the (user) data then i guess "all's well that ends well"
Please excuse me if this has been covered; I've searched for it but couldn't find it and after struggling to make this thing work for six months, I'm getting desperate!
I have a Galaxy S2 GT-I900 running Android 4.1.2, baseband version I9100XXMS2, firmware update is PDA:LSW/PHONE:MS2/CSC:LS5 (XEU)
It does everything asked of it and I'm impressed after running an XDA Orbit for some years; but there are two problems with it (apart from the dreadful KIES syncing software!):
First, whilst it will download emails on command for a while, sooner or later it simply stops; the progress indicator stops responding. I can get it to start again by removing the simcard and the battery, reinstalling and rebooting, but sometimes I have to do this three or four times a day!
Second, I think I did, once, manage to send an email, but it was a long time ago........might be mistaken.
I've deleted and re-entered my email account details dozens of times (all three accounts are affected simultaneously) both on my own and under the supervision of an o2 "consultant"; after months of badgering, I persuaded o2 to send me a new simcard, but the problem remains. I'm beginning to suspect that the baseband version is wrong-I read somewhere that the correct one for this phone is I900DXLSD, but not being an expert, I wouldn't be sure.
My main email account is with TalkTalk (been with them since they were lineone), it's POP3 and I have enabled data download and switched off sign-in/authentication required. I'm using smtp.o2.co.uk for outbound (as I always have, although just to be sure, I have tested it with smtp.tiscali etc without success).
I'm back with my trusty XDA now (which works fine, if a little slow!) as the Galaxy is of limited use without email; if I can't get this to work it'll have to go in the hi-tech junk drawer or be subjected to a float-test which I suspect it will fail!
Once again, if this has been covered, I couldn't find it; sorry for the long post. Anyone got any ideas?
Sounds like there might be something more fundamentally broken with your setup. But short of a fresh install of the ROM have you tried using a different email client. K-9 works quite well for me and I use it to manage 4 different imap accounts from 4 different email providers.

Looks like I fixed it!
Thanks; I finally bit the bullet and carried out a factory reset. It worked.....so far. email is "ok", although it often fails to login and sometimes says it can't because the password has changed (!). Also seems to be less than accomplished at sending email, but time will tell. Now I'm busy reinstalling my apps and sorting out my settings all over again (I'm not too keen on Samsung knowing absolutely everything about me!).
