Ever since I got my first Android device (Galaxy Nexus) I had the problem that Gmail and Google Talk just often won't notify me about new messages. It works fine sometimes but often there is a delay between a few seconds and several hours until it finally notifies me (if at all that is).
It's basically freaking useless. I just can't rely on it so I end up checking for messages and mail manually every few minutes.
Things that don't affect the problem:
Device and Android Version. Plenty of people reported this problem and it's just not limited to one device or version.
If the screen is turned off or not. It even stops working while Talk is open (not in the background).
How the phone connects to the internet. At home it's using the same connection as my PC, while it just won't notify me of an new e-mail the Talk client on the PC manages it without problems.
ROM/Kernel don't seem matter either. Also did plenty of factory resets.
All I can find are old and/or unanswered threads.

I'd have ditched Android by now if there would be a good alternative. But it's either Android, iOS or Windows Phone...
Sign out of google talk and gmail.do a battery pull, then a factory reset, then try again.

my advice. backup what you need(ie. text messages) and just clear data, revert to stock image

I don't really get how this could help. Don't feel like doing yet another reset unless it could really have an effect.

ROM and Kernel don't seem to matter. That includes for example stock, Cyanogen and franco kernel.
Did a factory reset like 100 times before, just this time logged out first. Didn't help, how unexpected.
Another option, contact sprint, have them do a. Profile refresh. Also update ur prl twice. Now that I think about, it could be a slight network issue in connection with ur device (hard to explain)

I'm in Europe. No sprint here.
I'll replace my Nexus with an S III today. Guess I'm about to find out if it's affected too.
Will probably be hard to do any further tests with the Nexus because my SIM is going to have a little meeting with a scissor.
Didn't get too many messages yet but some of them were definitely several minutes late. Guess the S III is affected too. Just great.
Am I the only person with this problem?
Still happening and renders the phone mostly useless.
At least some ideas on how to pinpoint the problem?

So Im having data issues today i wanna really exchange it Monday but Im afraid if i do il have screen issues right now data will work halfway and i have to keep refreshing the page til it finally loads its horrible but Im afraid to exchange it cause people that are havih the screen problems i have a problem at the upper top looks llike dead piles its a very light spot but usually only seen while on the camera app or when its turned on

If you think about the number of phones that are out there and people only generally post when there's an issue, I wouldn't worry about exchanging it. I've had two phones with no issues.

today I backed up my iphone SMSs and loaded them with sms backup and restore... everything went fine, but then my phone reset and there is a circle with a line through it where the data connection icon should be and says there is no sim installed.... I also cant dial out, but I received a call on the way home from work.
trying to open message app on the phone gives me a time out message and asks me to kill or wait. then the phone just freezes. I'm looking everywhere for a solution... first time android user so this is driving me a little bit nutty.
on my iphone I would just restore firmware... I guess thats what I should try here?

Have you done any type of changes to the phone like rooting, etc.? Anything you can think of that might have caused it or changed something right before it happened?
No, I haven't rooted or anything. All I did was download a few basic apps and then try to transfer my data to the new phone. I ordered a jig and don't want to do anything until it arrives.
I have solved the data issue, somehow the sim came slightly out of place. Once I reseated everything was good. is the sim slot that finicky?
i also did a factory reset and started from scratch and worked out the issue with the text messages. I appreciated your willingness to help a noob, thank you.
Just flashed MIUI-2.1.13 after having experimented with UnNamed. As per topic title, I'm using the latest SiyahKernel. Aside from the custom kernel and flashing MIUI, I haven't customized anything. I don't really know much of anything about modems at this point, so I haven't bothered to mess with them yet.
Since I just flashed, I'm downloading my apps through the web-based marketplace. Normally I'd use MyBackup Pro or some other backup/restore app, but sometimes the apps won't work when I install them that way; they will repeatedly force close. I'm downloading and installing from my computer to my phone because I live in a 2g area, and the Market app will always timeout, so I can't use it.
I can receive calls normally when I'm not downloading an app, but if I am, my phone will neither ring, nor show any evidence that someone tried to call me. I can make calls, but not receive them.
Once I get all my apps back on my phone, this won't be much of an issue as I won't be downloading a bunch of apps at once. For now, however, I would hate to miss a phone call because I'm putting some apps on my phone. And since it takes forever over EDGE (no, I don't have wifi in my room), it creates a pretty big window of time where I can't receive calls.
I searched and didn't find anyone else with this problem, so I'm not sure what to do. Rebooting hasn't helped anything either, so that's out.
Edge can't do voice and data at the same time. So that's your issue there.

Yup... remember all of those commercials with ATT boasting that you can call and surf the web on its 3g? (using two separate signals, one for data, one for calls)
Ah. Guess that explains that then. Thanks.
Greetings
I have a non-rooted evo 4g, lastnight it crapped out, wont send or receive calls, the same thing with text messages.
Ideas anyone?

Definitely worth trying a profile update, or PRL update. In addition, perhaps the tower in your area went down. I know this does happen from time to time, although it seems to occur more frequently in rural areas (not sure where you're located).
Worse case scenario, you might need to wipe /data as some important system setting became corrupt. This can be done thru the stock recovery or stock system by selecting factory reset. this will wipe the data partition and essentially reset the device back to store.
as long as you're contacts/emails/texts are stored in the cloud with your google account, they'll all sync back up. otherwise, you might look into a 3rd party app to backup /data prior to attempting this step. factory reset should be the last alternative. if a factory reset doesn't clear up the issue, you'll prob end up visiting a carrier. but this generally doesnt occur very often, so i wouldnt be too concerned with this last resort/option.
hope that helps!
Hello there, I currently encounter a very annoying problem with Google Play, of which solution is nowhere to be found:
1. Using stock ROM, Google Play becomes extremely slow and most of the time not working at all (Network error), while other applications still work well.
2. Everytime I factory reset, it works for about 5 minutes at reasonable speed, then the same problem occurs again.
3. Tried to reverse back to 4.1.1 but nothing changes.
4. Same problem with different WIFI networks and 3G.
5. Jelly Bam (haven't tried other ROMs yet but I believe they would) fixed the problem completely, but its lack of Samsung Apps and other amazing features (like Smart Stay, S Voice, S Note, ...) quickly made me reverse to stock ROM.
After trying every trick found on the internet (reinstall Google Play, clear the cache,...) with no success, and after two days struggling I am now completely exhausted defeated. My only hope is you guys who have had this problem before could help me fix it.
Thanks a trillion.
I recently had a lot of problem signing in, it turned out for some reason my WiFi and phone didn't want to play game with wpa2 but after changing router to just wpa and resetting all working again, I've seen intermittent reports along similar lines sporadically ever since s3 release
Did you try using proxies?

No, because I haven't got the faintest idea about that kind of gobbledegook as you well know

Yes, I did, soneone suggested 0.0.0.0:8080 but that blocks internet connection to all other applications.
I've discovered that uninstalling Google Play updates will help, but only for 5 minutes or so. After which time the problem persists again.
Now my only solution is to uninstall Google Play updates, (then the app will ask for updating at first run), install some apps as quickly as possible before the connection goes down again. Basically I have to repeat that process every second app downloaded, and that drives me insane!!!

That's interesting but in my case even 3G won't work, and the madness is that Google Play works crazily well in custom ROMs like Jelly Bam and like sh*t in stock ROMs.

I feel the pain, took me 10 days to finally get mine working, I did everything you did multiple times, exact same scenario, uninstall updates, get a connection, next time I go back to it,bam, no connection, tried different Roms, flashed to stock, everything!
I had something similar.
What I did was adding a second Google account, deleting the first one, log in, adding the first account back, then deleting the second account, and log in again.
Works for me hoops it's working for you.

Please excuse me if this has been covered; I've searched for it but couldn't find it and after struggling to make this thing work for six months, I'm getting desperate!
I have a Galaxy S2 GT-I900 running Android 4.1.2, baseband version I9100XXMS2, firmware update is PDA:LSW/PHONE:MS2/CSC:LS5 (XEU)
It does everything asked of it and I'm impressed after running an XDA Orbit for some years; but there are two problems with it (apart from the dreadful KIES syncing software!):
First, whilst it will download emails on command for a while, sooner or later it simply stops; the progress indicator stops responding. I can get it to start again by removing the simcard and the battery, reinstalling and rebooting, but sometimes I have to do this three or four times a day!
Second, I think I did, once, manage to send an email, but it was a long time ago........might be mistaken.
I've deleted and re-entered my email account details dozens of times (all three accounts are affected simultaneously) both on my own and under the supervision of an o2 "consultant"; after months of badgering, I persuaded o2 to send me a new simcard, but the problem remains. I'm beginning to suspect that the baseband version is wrong-I read somewhere that the correct one for this phone is I900DXLSD, but not being an expert, I wouldn't be sure.
My main email account is with TalkTalk (been with them since they were lineone), it's POP3 and I have enabled data download and switched off sign-in/authentication required. I'm using smtp.o2.co.uk for outbound (as I always have, although just to be sure, I have tested it with smtp.tiscali etc without success).
I'm back with my trusty XDA now (which works fine, if a little slow!) as the Galaxy is of limited use without email; if I can't get this to work it'll have to go in the hi-tech junk drawer or be subjected to a float-test which I suspect it will fail!
Once again, if this has been covered, I couldn't find it; sorry for the long post. Anyone got any ideas?
Sounds like there might be something more fundamentally broken with your setup. But short of a fresh install of the ROM have you tried using a different email client. K-9 works quite well for me and I use it to manage 4 different imap accounts from 4 different email providers.

Looks like I fixed it!
Thanks; I finally bit the bullet and carried out a factory reset. It worked.....so far. email is "ok", although it often fails to login and sometimes says it can't because the password has changed (!). Also seems to be less than accomplished at sending email, but time will tell. Now I'm busy reinstalling my apps and sorting out my settings all over again (I'm not too keen on Samsung knowing absolutely everything about me!).
