[Q] Subtle Email Failure - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Please excuse me if this has been covered; I've searched for it but couldn't find it and after struggling to make this thing work for six months, I'm getting desperate!
I have a Galaxy S2 GT-I900 running Android 4.1.2, baseband version I9100XXMS2, firmware update is PDA:LSW/PHONE:MS2/CSC:LS5 (XEU)
It does everything asked of it and I'm impressed after running an XDA Orbit for some years; but there are two problems with it (apart from the dreadful KIES syncing software!):
First, whilst it will download emails on command for a while, sooner or later it simply stops; the progress indicator stops responding. I can get it to start again by removing the simcard and the battery, reinstalling and rebooting, but sometimes I have to do this three or four times a day!
Second, I think I did, once, manage to send an email, but it was a long time ago........might be mistaken.
I've deleted and re-entered my email account details dozens of times (all three accounts are affected simultaneously) both on my own and under the supervision of an o2 "consultant"; after months of badgering, I persuaded o2 to send me a new simcard, but the problem remains. I'm beginning to suspect that the baseband version is wrong-I read somewhere that the correct one for this phone is I900DXLSD, but not being an expert, I wouldn't be sure.
My main email account is with TalkTalk (been with them since they were lineone), it's POP3 and I have enabled data download and switched off sign-in/authentication required. I'm using smtp.o2.co.uk for outbound (as I always have, although just to be sure, I have tested it with smtp.tiscali etc without success).
I'm back with my trusty XDA now (which works fine, if a little slow!) as the Galaxy is of limited use without email; if I can't get this to work it'll have to go in the hi-tech junk drawer or be subjected to a float-test which I suspect it will fail!
Once again, if this has been covered, I couldn't find it; sorry for the long post. Anyone got any ideas?

Sounds like there might be something more fundamentally broken with your setup. But short of a fresh install of the ROM have you tried using a different email client. K-9 works quite well for me and I use it to manage 4 different imap accounts from 4 different email providers.

Looks like I fixed it!
Thanks; I finally bit the bullet and carried out a factory reset. It worked.....so far. email is "ok", although it often fails to login and sometimes says it can't because the password has changed (!). Also seems to be less than accomplished at sending email, but time will tell. Now I'm busy reinstalling my apps and sorting out my settings all over again (I'm not too keen on Samsung knowing absolutely everything about me!).

Push-mail fails..?

Hi,
A couple of days ago, I allready posted this thread but somehow nobody's responding.
Since last week I'm the owner of an HTC Hero. One of the features I like(d) most is the support for Push-mail. But since a few days it seems to be broken and I can't get it fixed.
I'm having Zarafa with Z-Push (open source Exchange-implementation) which worked fine first couple of days, but all of a sudden it stopped working. This is my config:
Zarafa mailserver on Debian Linux with Apache and (self-signed) SSL certificate. This is the configuration which worked until 2 days ago and nothing changed on that config.
This is what I tried:
- Turn phone off and on: Does not work
- Manually sync: Works; Push sometimes keeps working for up to one hour and then stops also.
- Disable downloading on arrival and start polling every [x] minutes/hours: Works
- Disable SSL (pushmail over http in stead of https): Does not work
- Remove and re-add account: Does not work
- Start using WiFi in stead of 3G: Does not work
I checked the serverlogs of of my mailserver but I can't find anything strange.
In another forum I found somebody who uses Exchange 2003 which stopped syncing after several days without any reason.
I'd like to keep using Push-mail because (AFAIK) it isn't exhausting the battery as much as polling every [x] minutes.
Does anybody have a clue on how to solve this or at least how to troubleshoot this?

I hope I'll have more luck in Q&A.
Its probably because nobody has used the same set up as yourself, I for one have not heard of half the stuff in your post so wouldn't be able to answer.
You don't give much info as to whats wrong, it just "stops working". Do you get errors? is it trying to connect? Timing out?
Installed anything after installing this?
Is the exchange actually working to push email? I mean on the server side not the phone?
Network? Tried Turning the phone off and back on? Tried a hard reset and start again?
Sometimes I do a hard reset if something doesnt work and install things 1 by 1 after to see what causes the issue, its usually something thats conflicting.
Hi,
Thnx for your reply. I've been gone for several days, so that's why I didn't respond earlier.
I've been using Zarafa for quite some time, also with another phone (SE Xperia X1) and Push-mail works perfectly there. And it's been working fine for several days on the Hero too, but all of a sudden it stopped. I can make it work for up to an hour (at very most) by setting the download frequency to 'on arrival' which also proofs the server-side should be OK.
I'm not getting any errormessages, not on the phone nor on the server.
I've tried all things you mentioned, except a hard-reset. I'll try that later today as I want to make a backup first.
The funny thing is that I saw somebody else at this forum having the same symptoms, only with a real MS Exchange-server. Sadly enough, I can't find that post anymore...
Shoot...
A couple of days ago I removed some applications (funny gadgets, nothing special) because I didn't use them anymore. And yesterday I set the DL-frequency to 'on arrival' and until now it works flawlessly!
I don't know if there's any relation between these 2 events but somehow it's working again.

Initial Config of Exchange needs Wifi !!! NOW FIXED !!!

I received my SGS2 on Monday - pre-installed with the latest firmware (KE7) - and had problems immediately trying to get Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync configured.
I entered my configuration, consisting of
email address
Domain: user name
password
Exchange server
and a tick in the 2 SSL boxes
but kept getting error messages like:
Setup could not finish
Unable to connect Server
or
Setup could not finish
Activation failed. Unable to connect to network. Try again with network provider's default APN.
And before anyone asks, I did have a working data connection (automatically configured) and had no problems with internet access, email, weather updates on the widget, downloading apps from the store, etc, etc. I tried lots of different values for exchange, did a number of hard resets, etc - no joy. And then I brought the phone home, connected to my wifi and tried again. It worked!
I didn't believe it myself, so the next day I did the following:
Hard reset, wiped everything including cache.
Switched on phone, entered details for exchange - same error message as above
Drove home, outside the house, switched on wifi, entered my connection details and tried again (the details that previously failed were still on the screen, I reused them with no changes)
And it worked!
I would have thought that any application, including the Exchange configuration utility on my phone, would be agnostic as to how its data was delivered to our corporate exchange server; O2 GSM data or BT home broadband connection through a wireless router, who cares?
Anyway, this was driving me mad before I stumbled on this "solution" and hopefully the above can help someone. I'll also pass this info back to Samsung.
Before I go, does anyone want to comment on what the problem could be - O2 network blocking some type of traffic, hardcoded values deep in the configuration utility, etc, etc?
Hi,
Me too facing the same issue with my Samsung Ace S5830. I tried to configure my outlook with same module from other set it worked perfectly fine. I am facing issue with only my mobile set.
So I guess its not generic problem across all mobile set.
If any one is aware of this, please help ?
Regards,
Satish
FIXED !!!
I rang my network provider - o2 - and explained my problem. I was expecting to be told that if my data was working for other things then it wasn't their problem if there was an issue with my exchange client.
I was wrong! The guy I spoke to took me through the config in:
Settings - Wireless and network - Mobile networks - Access Point Names
Basically, we blew away the existing APN config and entered a new one from scratch. If I remember correctly, the new entries were the same as the old with the exception of Proxy and Port. These had values in the original APN I was using and they were left blank in the new one.
And it worked!
The o2 network - or more specifically the proxy - was not liking some of the data produced by the exchange client (which was SSL) and was refusing it.
So, lessons learned:
O2 support for me was great
If you have a similar problem, try ringing up your provider and ask them if the APN settings (which are usually automatically generated) are correct for your device.
I couldnt get the Exchange Server settings to work on my brand new i9100, I've installed Touchdown and it appears to have fixed the problem with the native exchange setup
Setup could not finish - fix
I have been looking for the fix for the problem;
Setup could not finish
Activation failed. Unable to connect to network. Try again with network provider's default APN
In the end the fix was simple in my case, I had the wrong date and time. Once I had corrected the date and time it setup perfectly.
Hope this helps
Unfortunately i got the same problem..
Any solutions have mentioned above, doesn't worked... :S

Yes.. I tried 2 days later...
It sounds funny, but it worked with any changes...! :S
I'm in exactly the same boat. Everything was fine on Friday and then I tried a new ROM (KI8 based Touche X-Power) and, all of a sudden, Exchange no longer works. No reflash, no wipe and reinstall. I've also tried official ROM's but it just point blank refuses to set up. Touchdown works, but in-built Exchange doesn't. This is very, very strange. Is there an explanation that anyone can give? I'm stumped...
activation failed
I have the same issues. Today I upgraded to gingerbread then to cognition 5.2 and now I cannot get exchange set up. I dont know if its due to the upgrade or a total coincidence. I get the "activation failed. unable to connect to network. try again with networks providers default APN" I'm using the same exact settings for domain, exchange server, etc. as before but it will not work.
same here. from lightining rom (2.3.4) to 2.3.5 roms. same issues with all the roms.
+1 To this problem. No idea what is causing it. Tried flashing to Villain ROM, had the issue. Flashed to Lightning ROM, same thing. Had to flash back to an older ROM because this problem was so annoying! Didn't work on either Wifi or 3G, with everything double and triple checked. Seems to work fine on my older ROM.
Same issue here. I've only been on stock with an At&t SG2. It was fine intially...I then wiped the phone for personal reasons and now I get this same error... try again with network provider's default apn. I tried with Touch Down and Enhanced Email and it works fine, but no luck with the native client. Very odd!! Btw, my device runs 2.3.4.
I hope someone is able to pinpoint the problem.
Same issue here.
Was on Cog. 1.51, exchange was working fine, flashed CM7 for a couple of days again no issues, now went back to 1.51 and getting the above messages. Wiped, cleared cache, etc, nothing works.
Same issue here. It was working fine when I originally configured it on Friday night. I wanted to change my google account on the device, so I did factory reset. Now I can't add my exchange accounts.
I contacted the Rogers (wireless provider) as well as Samsung Canada (useless weekend support staffs). Rogers points to Samsung. Samsung points to my company's MIS team!?!?!?!
Anyhow, I read the activation dialogue box again and again.
"By activating this application you accept that part of your movile phone data will be stored, processed and used by Samsung for the purpose of reporting activation of the application to the licensors of the application s/w itself. Such data held by Samsung will be dealt with strictly in accordance with Samsung's privacy policy. A copy of the policy is available upon request. Continue?"
It looks like it's trying to contact Samsung server to register the Exchange activation. I'm guessing they're trying to count number of exchange (activesync) users. Maybe, to pay greedy Microsoft.
I'm going to try again tomorrow.
glad to know there are many others, just flashed touch x rom, it actually worked, but the video playback was stuttering so i thought to flash it one more time,...and then cant activate exchange mail...tried flashing other roms didnt work, but a revert back to stock rom from nandroid backup works...getting confused here also
This has been driving me nuts for the last day and a half, funny that this topic's just exploded with replies. Sounds like it's a problem with Samsung's servers (Or their mail provider, Seven) activating the device for exchange. Vexingly, it worked absolutely fine until I switched ROMs and had to re-enter the settings, I've wiped all data multiple times and flashed many a ROM to try and fix it, but still no joy. Glad to hear I'm not alone, at least, sounds like we'll have to wait for Samsung to fix it.
In the meantime, people, don't remove your exchange setup.
EDIT: Emailed Samsung NZ about it, looking forward to their response.
i'm having this problem too.
I was on kh3 rom, all work perfectly.
Then (why? why? why?) i changed yesterday to the ki3.
No more exchange, i gone back to the kh3 but nothing changed, same problem.
On wifi, 3g, also using the wifi connection on the same network of the server exchange.
Any ideas? I need those email for work ç_ç
Me too.on cm7 works

Since we have to wait for Samsung (Or possibly Seven) to fix it, your best bet is to use another email client like K-9 (Free in the market) or one of the AOSP ones floating around. This is only an issue with the stock Samsung email application, so CM7 & MIUI et al will be fine.
You can try putting a tick in the 'set as premium account' box, which will sync email at push through the social hub - but that will only work if your exchange server supports POP or IMAP. That method will only sync email, not contacts and such, and it might not be the best idea for confidential work mail anyway. Still, beats not having any email access on the device..

Titan hangs with black screen

Dear reader,
I got a problem with my Titan for a couple of weeks now.
A couple of times a day when I grab my Titan and want to use it -> get it out of standby, it doesn't reacts to any input/buttons etc. just nothing. No feedback from capacitive buttons. Only way is to remove battery, insert it again and boot it up. But this occurs 20 times a day. I doesn't happen all the time though. But it is very frustrating.
It started after using the DFT rom for a couple of weeks. I hard resetted it, still same problem. Then I flashed the Dynamics7 rom, still same problem. So I start to believe that it's something hardware related, or maybe the following thing;
Though some other strange thing is that every time I hard resetted my device or flashed an other rom, and then installed the Facebook app, the FB app works fine, untill the first time my phone has the above mentioned strange bug. So after I restarted my phone, the FB app crashes while starting. And never works again... (FB app version 2.7.0.0)
Anyone with the same problem or suggestions?
Any help will be appriciated.
Thanks in advance,
Lars
It seems it has something to do with my mobile network or simcard or something. when in flightmode and using wifi it hasn't happend anymore fore some time now...
Well, I ordered a new simcard, in the hope that the problem would be solved.. But it has no effect. Tried 3 different roms, DFT, Dynamics7 and currently the standerd rom. All three, same problem.
As the problem becomes more frequent the last days, it also happens while calling, or other use of the phone, and not only when the device is locked...
Anyone with some suggestions?
Have you tried not installing any apps at all? Just running fresh?
Try not syncing your hotmail account either. Just let it run as a solo phone.
Also, while you factory reset what will be worth looking into is, having data connection switched off. Only using 2G.
I have had exactly same problem with my old Nokia E63. I never got around the issue. It was one specific operator (Vectone, UK) and every other company's SIM worked without causing issues. Maybe worth testing some other network provider's SIM from your friend?

well I found the problem. It's the Facebook app (not the integrated one).
Uninstalled it, problem solved. Installed it again, problem is back.

Any progress with that "loosing connection to google services" problem?

Ever since I got my first Android device (Galaxy Nexus) I had the problem that Gmail and Google Talk just often won't notify me about new messages. It works fine sometimes but often there is a delay between a few seconds and several hours until it finally notifies me (if at all that is).
It's basically freaking useless. I just can't rely on it so I end up checking for messages and mail manually every few minutes.
Things that don't affect the problem:
Device and Android Version. Plenty of people reported this problem and it's just not limited to one device or version.
If the screen is turned off or not. It even stops working while Talk is open (not in the background).
How the phone connects to the internet. At home it's using the same connection as my PC, while it just won't notify me of an new e-mail the Talk client on the PC manages it without problems.
ROM/Kernel don't seem matter either. Also did plenty of factory resets.
All I can find are old and/or unanswered threads.
Like those:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1673579
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=22570
I'd have ditched Android by now if there would be a good alternative. But it's either Android, iOS or Windows Phone...

my advice. backup what you need(ie. text messages) and just clear data, revert to stock image

I don't really get how this could help. Don't feel like doing yet another reset unless it could really have an effect.

ROM and Kernel don't seem to matter. That includes for example stock, Cyanogen and franco kernel.
Did a factory reset like 100 times before, just this time logged out first. Didn't help, how unexpected.
Another option, contact sprint, have them do a. Profile refresh. Also update ur prl twice. Now that I think about, it could be a slight network issue in connection with ur device (hard to explain)
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
I'm in Europe. No sprint here.
I'll replace my Nexus with an S III today. Guess I'm about to find out if it's affected too.
Will probably be hard to do any further tests with the Nexus because my SIM is going to have a little meeting with a scissor.
Didn't get too many messages yet but some of them were definitely several minutes late. Guess the S III is affected too. Just great.
Am I the only person with this problem?
Still happening and renders the phone mostly useless.
At least some ideas on how to pinpoint the problem?

[Q] Multiple Text Messages Being Sent

So I posted this on the Paranoid Android thread, and I think that was the wrong place to post since I have no eliminated it as a ROM issue. Here is what has happened:
This is the reason I am posting here: today my text messaging has gone goofy. When I send a text message in the default, stock, PA AOSP app, the message says "sending" under it for a little while, then it says the "failed to send message" with the little red triangle on it. Meanwhile, the recipient has gotten 4 copies of the text. Yes, four. It has happened to literally everyone I have sent texts to today: iPhones, Droids, feature phones. I have clean installed the ROM and GApps 3 times today and it still happens. I wiped my internal and SD card from TWRP (got into a little issue there, had to figure out adb sideload, but we are all good now). Checked the MD5's before I installed. It's still happening. Other people with Verizon in the area that I know don't have this issue. Also, this was my 3rd day since installing the ROM, and it didn't happen the first two days, only today. Bottom line, I have no idea what's going on, and I need some help to fix it.
Update on the texting issue: I called VZW and went through their steps, and they said its almost certainly a device issue, and not a network issue. She said that my phone is having trouble contacting the SMS switch, and so it keeps trying to send the message, but it never hears back so then it reports that it can't be sent. The lady I spoke with did file a ticket for a "Network Technician" to take a look at the issue, but that will probably take at least 72 hours. I really hope this is either an issue with the ROM or with the network, because I really don't want to have to go through the process of unrooting and returning to complete stock to get one of vzw's crappy "like new replacements"
Update 2: Restores some of my backups from previous ROMs, including an AOKP 4.2.2 Milestone and an CleanROM VZW SE and the text messaging is still messed up. That pretty much eliminates the chance that its a PA issue, and it is most definitely either a device issue, or a Verizon Network issue. Cross your fingers that its a network issue so I don't have to go through the mess of returning to stock and all that.
Any possible fixes that you guys can think of?
Indeed its a device problem. I've got the reverse issue! I keep receiving the same copies of one message about 10 to 15 times a day. Due to this, the latest message from the respective recipient delays to the next day! I do have tried third party apps but still it doesn't work out... Need help!??
