It supports nfc but as of now i think it cant be incorporated in any of our roms. Maybe wen ics comes

NFC only works on unrooted phones.
NFC is there and it does work, but nothing uses it yet.
Upon pressing my phone against an NFC enabled soda machine at work, the CATLOG file clearly shows that the system's NFC chip is being used, but there isn't an app out right now that utilizes it.
I have installed the APK for Wallet (crashes on startup by the way) and it looks to me like the HTC is using its own NFC method and not one that is recognized by Google's software. (it crashes because it looks for the NFC drivers in a different location than what the NFC catlog shows me)
This summer, Tmobile/ATT/Verizon are rolling out their ISIS mobile payment system (competetor to Google Wallet). So far it seems like ISIS is planning on launching with a better backing than Google Wallet. They have Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express on board. So I would guess that more of us will be seeing mobile payments later this year
Thanks, that's what I figured. I noticed Google Wallet only allowed Citi Bank, and I don't do business with them. I was reading some posts on here where some people got the apk to work on their Android based phones, but the results were mixed with a few people having it work, and many not.
Anyways, thx for the replies.
there is a setting under "wireless & networks" that you have to enable for it to work. maybe try that
Its true that the setting is there and it does currently work, not very many apps use it currently.
I believe you can program NFC tags using the built in NFC tag app that came with the phone. I think part of the reason that it isn't functional right now is because it doesn't use the standard Android NFC functions but instead uses HTC's own. Apps like PayPal don't recognize the phone as having NFC, so the function for it is absent.
But as I stated before, I did tap my phone to a NFC enabled soda machine while it was recording a CATLOG, it does show that its accessing the NFC hardware. Opening Google Wallet shows that its searching in a whole different area for the NFC drivers, and it comes back as not being able to do so.
In sense 3, I'm pretty confedant that HTC created their own makeshift NFC system and hopefully in 4.0+ they use the one that was built into Android
I was walking through a building at work and noticed a soda machine with paypass built into it, so I turned on Catlog and tapped it up against the machine.
This is what the Catlog reads:
NFC JNI Callback:
nfc_jni_transaction_callback() - status=0x0000[NFCSTATUS_SUCESS
NFC JNI > SE EVT_FIELD_ON
NFC JNI Notify Nfc Service
Click to collapse
So yes, the Amaze is reading the NFC from the machine. This seems to repeat about 10-15 times in the few seconds that I moved my phone over the machine.
I believe that the "Notify Nfc Service" is trying to call out to an app that can access the information from the soda machine, but since there is only the default NFC app availiable to us right now, it doesn't do anything with the data.
I'll try running Wallet with Catlog soon to see what its trying to call
Do you have kind a batch for the soda machine?
If yes, you can try to copy the nfc informations from it to your phone and use your phone as a batch...
Not quite sure what you mean about having a batch on the Soda Machine
Thought I would start a topic about NFC tags.
I just got mine from TagsForDroid and will be testing it when my phone FINALLY gets in.

Better yet, people should post ideas what they can do with these NFC tags.... Would it be possible to integrate NFC tag to say a business card to add to your phones contact?
I'm going to order a few and see what I can come up with

I think with free keychain NFC tag you can make it your contact card so when some one puts their phone to keychain it sends them all your contact info like a bussines card I guess

That's what this thread is for ^^. And yes, I do believe you can. Worst case, I think I read somewhere where if you put 2 VFC capable phones together, you can send stuff like contact info.

I ordered some. Anyone use Tasker? I am trying to figure out how to set up some tasker tasks. I would like to have a NFC run a task to open maps, nav to home, SMS the wife that I am "on my way" with ETA from maps. Then open pandora.
I have a 200 mile a day commute. When I leave work I send my wife a On My Way SMS with my Eta, Start Nav to home, (traffic view), start pandora. I would love to be able to tap a tag when getting in the car and be done.
Any Tasker experts out there?

Not an expert, but here's my $0.02. You can probably accomplish mostly everything you noted above, except I don't think there's a way to do the ETA in the SMS. I believe you can send a pre-programmed SMS from either NFC Task Launcher or Tasker, but I don't know of a way to have it include your ETA from Navigation. You may be able to have it pre-type the SMS, then you'll just need to add the ETA once Navigation is booted up and data is pulled down.
Keep in mind that although you can link Tasker tasks in NFC Task Launcher, certain tasks such as killing apps, disabling keyguard cannot work with external apps. There's a short dialog box that pops up when you try and link a tasker task from NFC.
Also keep in mind your NFC tag "memory" size and the size of the tag you're programming. Certain tags have higher capacity than others, and thus can hold "bigger" tags with more tasks. I didn't buy 1K tags, and I've already run into one situation trying to program a switch tag where it exceeded the tag's memory size.

Cool ideas. Have you tryed Glympse for letting someone else track your progress on a trip? I've used it countless times and it is damn awesome. It's a free app and shows real-time progress and even speed. It does allow you to set a destination but I haven't tried that - that may allow you to show your wife ETA.

Thanks that is cool. I DL it and will try it on my drive home tomorrow. If it work well that will save me alot of time setting up tasker. I could just set up a tag to have tasker to send a Glympse favorite I have set up to send to the wife with a note and to end Glympse when I get home. Start Navigation to home, start Pandora.

is there any app for samsung like lg does: the "lg tag"
Is there a way to get the Samsung TecTile App if one is not from US?
The store shows the app, but as a German user (or a non US Galaxy S3 owner) the appstore says it's not compatible with my mobile.
Actually I ordered some TecTiles from the US but now it seems I won't be able to use them - at least not with the Samsung App.
NFC and phone covers
How well does NFC work if you have any sort of Phone cover on? I was thinking about getting a Ringke Slim Lite for my pre-ordered Verizon Galaxy S3, but not sure if covers will cause any problems with NFC.
I would appreciate it if those already using NFC tags with their Galaxy S3 could chime in.
I know what a NFC tag is, but what could I use it for?
If been using nfc tags off eBay work fine go tag in case to turn on Bluetooth and can mode an jab one for home to turn off same and turn.on. Wi-Fi
They are superb
Samsung's tag program works with most

They can be used to exchange business cards, switch profiles (if you have CyanogenMod9 ROM, which supports profiles), or just toggle various phone settings on/off, launch applications or make payments using Google wallet.
Search for "pocketnow nfc android" on YouTube. They have a 2 part video demonstrating some cool stuff you can do with NFC & your Android.

I've used NFC Interactor to write tags, I think it's a dollar or two. Just so you know apparently there is a windows phone limitation where it can't format tags. In my case I had to use a friends android tablet for that. I don't think there is a way to toggle wifi/bluetooth at the moment and it might not be possible with the SDK. But you can definitely start apps or phone settings if you find the GUID for it.

Thanks. I suspect it's Sense that is crippling the location element. Really too bad because, in your example, unless you're employed by Starbucks it might be slightly difficult to buy anything but a cup of coffee at work

I went into Maps>Settings>Location Settings>Manage Your Places and found a list of places including "Home".
I tried "Buy coffee when I get to (a few of those places)" and it worked.
"Buy coffee when I get to Target" brought up search results.
I Starred Target and no change.
I'm hoping it just takes some time to sync.

You bring up a good point. I tend to try and fly under the radar as far as location based social apps/tracking (foursquare/check-in type things) so it's entirely possible I've disabled what ever it is that Google Now needs to find me for reminders. Come to think of it, I've not gotten the Public Transit card to work either.
If I were to give Google another piece of my soul, any idea which Location Settings would I need to enable to trigger the reminders and location based cards? Which one's might I be able to leave turned off to keep my whereabouts mysterious?

I keep Latitude off but that's the only one I try to stay away from because it broadcasts where you are to people based on your settings and it's a battery hog.
There are so many settings in maps, and sync, and settings, and ....
I'd go in, poke around for a while and see what your willing to give up.
Hootie Hoo, I've had some success. Enabled the "Report from this device" setting in Google Maps>Settings>Location settings and I got a location based reminder. I believe I asked "Google, remind me to buy a raspberry shake at the nearby Culver's restaurant" No problem at all submitting the request by voice and having the right information come up for approval.
I'll add a couple of caveats. The reminder triggered after I has been in the location for at least 5 minutes or so (and had already ordered the milkshake ) and I happened to be in a location where I was picking up 4G data speed. I think there is defiantly an issue of how fast the phone/app is able to report back to the Google mothership and fire off the reminder as opposed to having the location coordinates processed from within the phone itself. I suppose that might be one more reason you are encouraged to enable the WiFi detection element of location services.
In any event, while currently this is not a particularly smooth and seamless feature, I think as the network builds out and the app matures the Now location reminders have a lot of potential to be an extremely valuable and handy tool.
