hi.
Today, I've dropped my phone. At first glance it was fine, but then I realized the speaker wasn't working.
I opened the phone, cleaned the speaker's connector with alcohol, assembled it back and it works.
But then I found out my proximity sensor is also damaged.
It became so limited, that during a call, the screen may turn on and off repeatedly, or won't turn off at all, or won't turn on after moving the phone off my face.
So, I would like your help in two things:
1.Is there an app for ICS that can help me test the proximity sensor? I remember GB has "SGS toolbox" that could test everything including the sensor.
I just want to make sure the problem is really the sensor and not something in the dialer app.
2.Assuming there is problem with the sensor, I would like to look at it, but I don't know how this sensor looks like and where to find it inside the phone.
I hope for your help, and thank you very much.
Ok I found a solution so here it is for anyone who may find this thread:
The proximity sensor is on the same assembly as the earpiece and the headphones jack.
Turns out, the flex cable of the assembly is cracked. To make is worse, the crack expended once I took the assembly out so now the earpiece doesn't work too.
I have ordered this part from eBay, it costs 5$.
But it will take a few weeks to arrive since it's shipped from China. That's some bad luck.

Hi my problem is strange. After a fall mi phone HTC GRATIA is similar HTC Aria have a problem during the call. Sometimes the display became black similar a stand by and not answer to the all impulse. If i want stop the call i have to do remove the battery.....
Have you any help for me ?
thank you
I've got a similar problem. I've replaced my digitizer and done everything by the instructions I've found. However the proximity sensor doesn't work and disable the screen when calls are answered.
I've got the rubber gasket on the light sensor, didn't lost it, and the light sensor works OK. I've tried prying very gently in between the digitizer and the housing, and while I do that sometimes the proximity sensor will show a value of 3.5in, and not 0 as always. I'm using AndroSensor.
I don't mind disassembling the phone again, but I don't know what I need to fix it.
I've searched all the forum posts about it, but either people disabled it somehow, and others just say they fix it but didn't mention how.
Any help on this?

You need to get the light sensor, gasket, and the small window in the digitizer all lined up perfectly so that the light sensor is not being blocked by anything. Not as easy as it sounds.
thanks for the explanation, but is the best way to do this?
and why the light sensor shouldn't be blocked? it seems by AndroSensor that it works fine, the problem is with the proximity sensor.
These phones where manufactured by the thousands per day in some factory, there sure is a way to assemble them precisely somehow.

If it is blocked, then it will not be able to sense anything (It's like you (the light sensor in this case) are trying to through a wall (whatever's blocking it)).

Special machines used to place them accurately.
I meant that the light sensor is "blocked" by the rubber gasket and seems to works fine.
by the way, as far as I know, most electronics are assembled by hand. laptops, iphones and ipads are, so I don't think that Aria is any different.
If anyone has any tips on how to do this, since I'm sure I someone has managed to replace the digitizer on this phone? how do they do this in repair shops or AT&T store?

The ambient light sensor and the proximity sensor are two separate things, though they are right next to each other on the Aria. The proximity sensor is MUCH more sensitive to being precisely aligned.
I incorrectly used the term "light sensor" in my earlier post. The proximity sensor, NOT the ambient light sensor, is responsible for turning the screen off during calls.

That's what I assumed you were talking about.
As I've said the proximity sensor is the right sensor and the ambient light is the left sensor that is covered with the rubber gasket.
The light sensor works perfectly as I've said. In AndroSensor at least it jumps between 33 LUX when covered and 77 LUX and 220 LUX when placed directly under a desk lamp.
But the proximity sensor doesn't seem to respond at all. What perfectly aligned means, that the sensor is right below the "hole" in the digitizer plastic? if I place the digitizer and it falls into the place, how come it isn't aligned? it's not like the digitizer has where to move in the frame.

I have two Arias and they both max out at 698 lux. If you can't get it to go above 220, it might be partially obstructed.

Do you notice a gap between the LCD and digitizer that is larger than it was from the factory? I wonder if it might just be related to the digitizer sitting too far from the proximity sensor. If you press down on the top right corner of the digitizer while in a call (without covering the sensor itself), will the screen turn back on?
Possibly unrelated, but similar.
I have an identical issue with the DroidX.
It needs a "gasket" over its proximity "light source" to keep light from reaching the proximity light sensor when there is nothing in front to reflect it back.
Looks like the light source had a rubber hood over it with a pinhole directed straight out, away from the sensor adjacent to it. Thus keeping stray light from triggering the sensor.
AAARGH. To have that little rubber piece.
Erbid
after replacing another screen and this time I've done it right, this is what I've learned.
I've assembled the phone with androsensor turned on and tested the sensors all the time. It seems that they should be perfectly clean (some air spray will do just fine), perfectly aligned with the holes in the digitizer and don't have to much distance between the digitizer and the sensors.
It's seems like a hassle but actually it's not, since if you put the right tape and put the keep it all clean, it can work with no problems at all. Make sure you test everything before you close the phone completely.
Hello there everyone, im a newbie here and i joined for this specific question. I bought a replacement digitizer for my aria and replaced it myself and the screen works fine. The first time i turned it on i did a test call and i couldnt hear anything through the earpiece. i took it apart and flipped the earpiece around. did another test call and yes i could hear the call fine, but the screen just stayed black. I see that many people have this problem after a new screen, and i was wondering how to fix it. im unaware of what the proximity sensor is really, im not sure what it looks like so i am unable to do the black tape trick to take away any sunlight it is receiving. if someone could explain what it looks like and how to fix this thatd be amazing. oh and i have already tried the app Sanity, its cool but didnt work. thanks!
Here's a picture showing where window for the proximity sensor is: http://i.imgur.com/ayQhv.jpg . It's almost impossible to see unless you are standing in direct sunlight or another extremely bright light. Based on that you should be able to find the proximity sensor itself which would sit directly below that window in the phone.
If you don't want to open the phone up again, you can also consider disabling the sensor. You can read about it in the two posts I link to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26515001&postcount=25 . I know this works in CM7 but I have no idea whether it works with newer ROMs.

When you replaced the digitizer you most likely forgot to move the black gasket from the old part to the new one.
There is a piece of black tape and a rubber gasket that surrounds the prox sensor. If you don't move these 2 pieces over the problem will continue.

There are two possible options
1) play with screen delay using init.rc file, it fixes some black screen issues
2) for me sometimes pushing screen harder than usual makes it go bright again
So I dropped my phone and the screen cracked. No biggie as I am fairly handy. Bought a new digitizer and replaced it. All the functions work... that is until I try and make a phone call. No voice registers. Try and use the voice command option and it doesn't hear anything. Ok, so I need a $5 mic from ebay. I think it goes deeper than this. When I make the phone call the screen automatically goes black and I can't get it to come back up until the call ends. I made a phone call and swear I can hear a faint echo of my voice in the earpiece. I've had it apart half a dozen times or more checking everything. It all looks good. I think the phone is only like 2 months old so I'm not even sure if there's a warranty on it, especially now that I've replaced the screen. Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Hello, I am having the exact same problem on my friends Radar. Did you ever figure it out? where did you buy the digitizer, Ebay? Thanks!

For the Radar, it is very easy to damage the mic flex if you don't remove it prior to removing the outer housing of the phone, and also if you don't install it after installing the housing again. There is very little clearance when levering the housing off of the board/lcd, so if the flex is not removed, it can crease, causing the internal wires of the flex to be damaged.
Regarding the screen going black, this is usually caused by a fault or blocked proximity sensor, or sometimes a missing grommet that goes around the sensor to block extraneous light from interfering with the sensor. I suggest double checking to make sure that nothing is blocking the sensor, that the sensor is not damaged or unplugged in any way, and that any grommet that was originally there is still there.
I have a Radar open in front of me right now and it is supposed to have a grommet around the proximity sensor, so if you happened to have lost it or threw it away with the old digitizer, you might be out of luck. Try to find some way to separate the transmitting and recieving components of the sensor so that they can't interfere with eachother (so that the light emitted by the transmitter doesn't immediately reflect off of the digitizer and back into the reciever).
Kind of hard to explain, sorry.
I just updated to SR Remix KitKat and I noticed that my proximity sensor isn't working now. I can't say for sure that it was the update which caused the problem because a week before this I had the screen glass replaced. Now I know this can be a problem when the screen glass is replaced but I wanted to verify that it wasn't caused by the update before I take the phone apart and try to fix it. I'm posting here to see if anyone else has had this problem with this update or ROM. I tried the hidden menu *#0*# and it wasn't functioning. I also checked with CPU-Z and there was no activity at all from the sensor.

I also updated my I605 to SR Remix KitKat last night, and can confirm that my prox sensor is working fine (just made a few calls to be sure ).
Looks like you may need to do some tinkering with that glass panel..
Well I found that it was in fact a shoddy glass replacement. Too bad I already gave the eBay guy positive feedback.
What I found when I removed the proximity sensor was that the back side if the glass windows for the front facing camera, proximity sensor and ambient sensor all had glue residue covering them. It took a little bit of rubbing with a Q-tip and Goof-Off to get it clean enough to work. I'm sure glad I paid someone to do the job right so that wouldn't happen *sarcasm* I'll just do the job myself next time.

Hehe
Glad you got it working.
Got my screen replaced this afternoon.
When I recieved my fixed phone, my fingerprint sensor wasn't programmed.
I went to the Security Settings and went to turn it back on, but it wasn't showing an option for a Fingerprint to unlock it.
I went to the Smart Cleaning Extension, optimized my phone and then went to test the hardware and every harswarw passed except the Fingerprint Sensor.
Quick Help didn't help at all.
I dont know what to do.

Have you resolved your fingerprint problem?
I have a slightly different fingerprint issue. The V30 T-Mobile phone I purchased had a cracked back cover. So I replaced it with a new one following in detail the repair videos on google. After I put it together, the fingerprint option disappeared. Has anyone experienced this? Any resolution?
Thank you.
My LG V30+ fingerprint sensor quit working after I replaced the wide angle camera. It disappeared from the software menu and failed the hardware test. I replaced the fingerprint sensor with a new one without success. After examining the fingerprint sensor connectors on the motherboard with a 10x eye loupe (from Harb. Frieg.), I discovered that I had damaged one of the connectors when I removed the mid-board and main-board. The little gold connectors are spring loaded and circled with super thin aluminum looking strips. They are extremely fragile. One of the strips was bent down, and when I tried to bend it back, it broke off and fell on the table. It was so small I could barely feel it between my fingers. I suspect the fingerprint sensor is failing the hardware test because the connectors on the mainboard are damaged. I also suspect that the reason the software options are missing is that the system fails to detect a fingerprint sensor during the boot process and therefore does not load the fingerprint software options.

I'm curious to know if you were able to fix this issue after discovering the problem or if it is a lost cause. I'm having the same problem (no fingerprint option) after having someone else replace my screen and back glass. I'm not sure what else caused it or what to do about it.
I also got the same issue. My phone came back from the shop with heavily bent pins. Though I was able to bend most of them back (they're actually quite flexible, won't break easily as long as you're careful), one just won't return to its original state. It sits slightly lower than other pins and takes less force to compress.
Anyway it still works if I press on the connector. So if you're facing the same issue, try pressing the area to the lower right of the sensor whenever you need to use the sensor. If the phone detects sensor failure it won't work until next unlock.
