I wandered on over to the Galaxy Note (N700? International version), and I noticed a lot of development over there. This holds true for many international models, like the gt9100. Why aren't the US versions as popular? There is a hrlltaiser mod that makes the 9100 roms compatible, but this will never happen, because of the CPU's. Will the AT&T Note gain dev momentum? Is there anything us non devs can do? I know how to make basic themes, but I'm not so confident when it comes to learning how to mod a stock rom. I miss the black, transparent, glass look of the pull down, dialog boxes, etc.
I'm willing to create custom batteries, signal bars, pull downs, fonts, etc. Basically, I can cover the theming side of things. I would greatly appreciate anybody willing to chip in. If anybody is interested, please contact me here, or via PM. Let's get the eye candy going!!

My 2 cents is we will never have large development in the US for Samsung devices until Samsung makes a business model change.
That change is to STOP Segmenting the Market by allowing the US Providers to make custom versions of the same device. IE the SSGII 4 providers different screens and CPU's.
If Samsung will releases the Note to ALL providers with the same hardware then things open up dramatically. The issue is to have Samsung to create a single CPU that supports all of the US Bands. once this is done the US will have a powerful development market.
We can hope and dream!!
Earthdog, I don't know of any company that tells its customers what it will sell to them.
I think that since we only have the US developers and they have the rest of the world, that we should just accept that we won't get as much dev action as they do.
Devs from the galaxy nexus, infuse and skyrocket section will be over here. PLUS the note has only been out but for so long. Most international devices get better dev support anyway. It isn't anything new.

The problem is not Samsung. It's really us, the USA userbase.
This will only change when:
1. We stand up and demand that the carriers here adopt international standards, or
2. Global growth eclipses the US market size, making it no longer significant enough for the manufacturers to put up with the carrier's demands.
7 billion people in the world, only 350 million in the US. It makes sense that the international versions would get more development.

It isn't all Samsung. AT&T could easily have the international model with the same exact specs, but AT&T wanted LTE, which meant no exynos processor. It is the same with the HTC One X.. no quad core because of LTE.

+1....
i agree....but its also the fact that we are getting LTE with this version of the note....
if i remember correctly....there isn't a lot of LTE phones out there...and i think most of them don't have a working ICS custom rom at the moment.....
give it sometime for the dev to work on the issue....i am pretty sure that once they figure out the hardware/software requirements for LTE... the roms will start pouring in....
remember that korean also have this version of LTE galaxy note.....so i am pretty sure that samsung won't want to kick themselves in the butt....

Most definitely
As interesting that phone is. I'm sticking with Samsung since as far as all the other mobile developers and maker out there, they're leading. Panasonic still needs a lot of work. It'd be nice to see what they'd come up with in the next few years.
Even though I'm completely loyal to Samsung and will only replace my Note with a Note 2 or 3 in the future, phones like this and the LG Vu (as well as the Dell Streak of the past) provide me with security that this new trend in 5"+ devices will be sticking around far into the future, which makes me happy. I will never use a device that doesn't have a better screen technology than Samsung's Super Amoled panels. I don't see any device topping them with the way things are going, and I also don't mind touchwiz and the openness that Samsung has towards 3rd party development through unlocked bootloaders and whatnot. My Note will most likely be the first device that I will actually be happy with for more than a year, as I have been using my Family's upgrades to get a new phone every year.

REALLY? 254 days since last reply you have to dig this one up from the grave?
I went to at&T today to pick up a new sim card for my lady and the flip cover case for my note (which i can't decide if i like or not) and was talking to the rep about my note.
I mentioned that the only thing i didn't like about the note was the lack of accuracy of.the s-pen. He told me that they are planning on rolling out an update to this and through note tablet that will address that issue and will increase.its sensitivity and accuracy.
Throw that in with the mention of the "Galactic upgrade Premium Suite coming soon" mention at the end of the new Angry Birds Space for the note game trailer and i think its accurate. According to what i saw it is coming 3/25.
I think that means ICS is pretty far out with this simple.update coming at the end of the month. Makes me frown...
At least they are doing something about the s-pen i guess.

Why, from a business standpoint, should AT&T bother upgrading a phone that has already been released?
In the past, the only real reason for an upgrade would be to fix something that was broken, or add something that was missed. Gingerbread isn't broken, ICS doesn't add anything, therefore there is no real need for an upgrade.
Unfortunately, for us, this means that any ICS that comes along in forms of ROMs will have to be hacked in (for features like Hardware Acceleration) since we can't really write for the specific hardware.
I'm actually cool with GB myself. It was a long time coming and ICS just didn't have that big of an impact on me. I just wish that TouchWiz was better geared for my finger in this phone instead of the s-pen.
Well i never said that i thought the date would stand.
I just found it very interesting that he would say that and then i would read that.
Samsung knows they have a decent following and most of them are drooling for ICS. So does att. From a marketing and customer relations standpoint they know they would take a hit without an ICS update. The question is just when.
An update to the note around the release of the note tab makes sense. Similar hardware between them and if they were able to update the accuracy on the tab they could easily port that to the phone. Probably include some new bloatware from recently developed apps designed for the note. Call it a "Premier Suite" to get people interested.
Sent from my SGH-I717R using xda premium
Thanks for sharing what you heard. Whatever it is that is on the way sure can't be a bad thing. None of us knows what it is, but we all hope that ICS will be here sooner than later. I don't think Samsung would have teased this news with Angry Birds unless it was somewhat significant, at least. I actually think it is some of the software that they have been teasing on their website, i.e. Whiteboard.
The angry birds tease is an international note as I recall. I bet my right nut we won't see ics before October. Don't get ur hopes to high guys n be disappointed, just enjoy and be happy we have a awesome piece of hardware!
Enjoy the note now as the Galaxy Note S or Note II will come with JellyBean. Take this with a pound of salt.

Ive seen several reports that rank ATT higher then Sprint and Verizon. I dont understand why everyone bashes on ATT. Every Wireless company is evil in my opinion, not just ATT. I found ATT's customer service to be rather pleasant compared to Verizon and Tmobile. (I despise sprint so i havent worked w/ their customer service).

Just curious, because I did my homework prior to purchasing this unit and from what I could tell it would be upgraded to ICS relatively quickly. I heard March quoted quite a few times, but I wasn't really expecting it until Summer. But Samsung is really trying to compete with Apple these days, and they're doing a good job. They know one of their weak spots was their lack of support for existing products, maybe I'm naive, but I would like to think that with the competition in mind, and considering It's not drastically difficult, that they would want to get that update out to us relatively quickly.
Either way I don't think it makes that huge of a difference.
I see it as a simple problem to solve. We will all have to band together to pay a dev to take a quality ICS package (and thats official, not leaked) and graft it over to the ATT version. There are numerous talented devs here that can pull it off, especially with "donations"
I doubt we will ever see ICS on the original att note, perhaps the Note 2 when ever that comes out.

It's not an opinion.. is the AT&T SGSII getting ICS in March like the international version? No. It is pretty obvious which version Samsung is talking about.. Carrier testing takes longer than three weeks which is how long the AT&T Note has been out for.
The special little party is probably about S-Pen SDK 2.0 which was just released.

In prior history has the carrier branded and international version EVER gotten a major software upgrade at the same time? NO! International always gets it well before a carrier phone. Just the nature of the beast. I'm telling u guys, no ics for at&t note till atleast October! It is what it is! No big deal!
I Just upgraded to to the Note 3 days ago. I was going to switch carrier but then this beast came out so now iam stuck with At&t for another 2 years.. (yikes) i still have the LG thrill with me which was supposed to be upgraded to GB Oct 2011???? It is now Match 2012 and its still running Froyo. At&t are full of promises if the Note gets ICS fine but if note iam ok with GB on this thing..I can always install ROMS later
Do you guys think well get the s3 apps like the camera and the s talk and eye tracking and all that like would it be possible or is the stuff based on hardware cause in my opinion since the s3 lte is going to probably be the same processor of the note I feel the note with the s3 futures will be either a very good competition or actually be a better phone for those who can use big phones

If anything the GS3 would be using the S4 snapdragon which is the MSM8960 paired with the adreno 225, unlike the Note which uses the S3 snapdragon MSM8660 (IIRC) paired with the adreno 220. So not exactly the same chips...

Officially? No. Unofficially? Yes.
This is Samsung's way to get people to purchase new phones. In other countries outside the US, 2 year contracts dont exist which frees customers to upgrade phones as often as they wish. Releasing new features for new phones keeps people buying the newest Samsung phones. Here in the states, its a different story.
FOR THE MOST PART, this is one of the few areas where Apple has done it right, firmware updates are generally speaking fast and frequent giving new features and functionality nearly every month or two. Yes, there are exceptions (most recently, Siri) but Apples' business model is based on the US cell model.
HOWEVER, this doesnt mean these features wont be ported by the community, just as Siri is now available unofficially for just about all Apple ipads, iphones and itouches.
Of course, this is my opinion, all speculation.
I wondered the same thing as the OP. And I agree with littlewierdo. I think it may be possible for these new features, which are mostly software, to be ported over to the Note. Only time will tell.
Much later From Devs not Samsung
I doubt Samsung will ever port any of the new software features over from the SGS3 they just sent out ICS and premium suite to the carriers I think thats all the software upgrades we'll see from Samsung to our phones. But I do think we have some really great Devs on here that will port some of the SGS3's software features to our devices in Mods or Roms. As to when this will happen I'd guess not til late fall 2012 after the SGS3 source code is out and the Devs have had enough time to figure out and write those features for our device. But like I said we have some great Devs on here so who knows they keep surprising me perhaps will see those roms/mods earlier.

Id really like to know where the notion that Samsung has sent ICS to carriers came from. To my knowledge, there has been nothing officially stated that I know of except that Samsung stated Notes would BEGIN seeing ICS in Q2 of this year, but ICS will likely roll out STARTING in Korea and move to different regions over time, as has been the case with EVERY roll out Samsung has done. The Captivate didnt see Gingerbread until nearly a year AFTER it started rolling out in Korea.
I could very well be wrong here but based on Samsung's track record for releases and the fact that there has not been anything official that I know of besides a vague statement by Samsung about a Q2 update, I dont see anything happening. It might feel like something is coming but we dont even have a ready for prime time leak yet...

you are right.. Koreans are very trendy people. My cousin and his friends change phone every 6 months or so.
There is that "official" update link that Samsung mobile usa on twitter keeps referring people to, but that only shows one device with official update as of now.
As far as the OP question, it is very likely that we will see someone port these over since most of the new software uses the same base hardware (i.e. NFC in conjunction with wifi direct, or front facing camera for eye tracking, etc). I realize that the cameras may be different or the exact model of the NFC chipset or other hardware may differ, but it is software and can be changed to utilize our device specific hardware. Since these new programs were built on existing technology(that the note shares) it is highly likely to eventually see these incorporated.
It will take talent and time, but it is very likely that in later stages of development we will see potential unlocked... Or unwrapped, lol
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
I'm sure someone will be able to port it at some point, but I wouldn't count on it happening anytime soon, and probably not even this year. I'm not basing this on a ton of information, but I've been following the Note forum for awhile since I decided to hold out for the S3 and as far as I know there still isn't a great leak without bugs for ICS, which was pretty much "guaranteed" by all the forum members as soon as the Note released in the US.
I could be wrong, but that's just what I've seen.

I am from India and hence i have few queries.
1) Is there any chance the Exynos chipset might not be present in any random Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-i777 ?
I remember its counterpart phone in India also had an alternate version. Hence want to confirm.
2) What's the scenario regarding the service carrier maligning issue? I heard about it few weeks back.. no idea about current scene.
I am basically looking for the US counterpart of SAMSUNG I9100 GALAXY S II, which was released here in India.

I'm not sure why you want the us version of a phone when you're in India.

Answer his question or don't respond.
1. If it doesn't have exynos chipset, then it's not an I777
2. Talk to your local carrier, we can't provide you this information
If you find out the other information and decide the I777 will in your area, I'd wait a few weeks. The used prices will probably go lower with the Nexus 4 release.
@jthatch12
Thing is, this phone was never released in my country. So i can only glean as much info possible via user response, regarding the gen scenario on the whole. Hence i asked
I ll try to seek the second query's response by more efficient / diligent searching.
Thanks for the part 1 of the reply.
@Sledutah
Yea, i plan to purchase ~next month. Hence getting all the info by that time.
Maybe the pricing will also come down by a bit. Let's see.

If you're going to spend ~$250 for a phone, why not just spend a little bit more and get the state-of-the-art Nexus 4?

I honestly did gave it a serious thought.. but:
1) LG brand is holding me back.
2) Limited storage/No mem card slot (something which does irks me)
3) It ll be glass on both sides. More chances of the compulsion to use it in a case.
4) I am not too big a fan of massive screens.. (barely convinced myself to go wee bit beyond the 4inch real estate)
India uses GSM so it'll definitely work with your carrier, I'm from Kenya and I used the phone without any issues, only thing is when you do get the phone you'll have to downgrade it to Gingerbread in order for sim unlock tools downloadable from play store to actually work, as most that are sold are. Also AOSP is full of issues if you plan on flashing CM10/AOKP but Samsung ROMS should perform beautifully and with expected 4.1 its a good buy, though I sold mine for Nexus 4

Hello..
I have zeroed in on the Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-i777 phone as my next upgrade and would like to get it off US Ebay. (Basically a mint pre owned piece.)
I am from India and hence i have few queries.
1) Is there any chance the Exynos chipset might not be present in any random Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-i777 ?
I remember its counterpart phone in India also had an alternate version. Hence want to confirm.

You already got many responses from others, I just chip in a bit.
1. If it's legitimated product made for AT&T, then it is, would be, have to be Exynos.
As for the counterfeit part? Seriously, nobody know. We just simply cannot check.
2. Depends on your end, if it has GSM network then it would work, however, depends on the frequency they operate, you might only get 3G speed and not take full advantage of the 4G (H+) one.
@votinh
err.. no counterfeiting thing.. i mentioned counterpart
Thank you for the other valuable info in your post.
We have two versions of S2 floating in India. One has the Exynos chipset, the other ( i9100G) seems to be having a slightly inferior SOC.
While purchasing here, one can be aware of the model no for both G as well as non-G with due diligence and adequate research regarding the stickers on the box mentioning the details. The G model does have a noticeably weaker GPU in the form of SGX 540.
I got concerned after hearing that the model i9100G does not have too much love from the development community simply because it is not available widely & in most territories (it probably is only available in asia pacific countries only)
To ask another query.. and this might be vague..
What's the future of the S2 phone.. both in terms of official and custom ROM releases..?
It surely has the firepower under the hood to go some decent distance i think.. but with all these quad core based phones now making an appearance.. will the official rom be made to order for advanced configurations..??

Seems to me, the S2 is on its way out, if it hasn't already been officially discontinued. If I were buying a new phone, I would get the most recent model possible, because the rate at which new models are introduced.
Also, what is your discomfort with LG?
Honestly the Nexus 4 is a scrub phone compared to the i777

something worth taking note... is the i777 can take a serious beating. much more than any other phone i have come in contact with. it will scar and mar. the metal band will take on some serious gashes and the screen will stay unharmed. it is the only reason i still have this phone and have not upgraded.
that being said... if speed is what you want, buy something else. this is 2010 tech after all.
Hi all,
Just curious and wanted to see if the general consensus is that starting with the Galaxy S through to the S3 ( you may include lesser variants but I'm talking strictly I II and III ) is this the most popular and well developed mobile series in terms of modifications and roms ? much more so than say Sony, HTC etc ?
Having owned all three and having gone from DarkyRom on the Galaxy S, the to using PA on the S2 to now using ( and loving Null ) on the S3
the dev scene around the Galaxy series always seems to have been healthy but with the S2 and S3 more so seems massive and so well catered to.
Am I right or am I blinkered in having stuck the the Galaxy line over the years ?
I believe the galaxy series have very active mods

They are very popular phones, namely for their powerful hardware and the fact that they are ahead of the curve.
This alone would attract a heavy amount of devs.

I understand that but the HTC one series has some nice hardware and features yet they don't seem to be embraced among the community now the way they used to be, I suppose it's almost a chicken and egg scenario.
Does the Samsung series attract the most dev's and therefore sell's the most or vice versa do dev's hit the hottest selling mobiles as they know it's a way to ensure their work hit's an appreciative audience ?
Essentially Devs do what they want to do .
Point of note that development may consist of nothing more than themed and cut and paste mods with nothing actually developed for many roms .

Actually your half right, the one x is a stellar phone which IMHO is a much better looking phone than the s3, however it has something really crap about it, well two things really, locked in battery and non upgradeable memory.
Two things which made me steer clear of HTC this year, take a peek at my sig and you'll see my history is full of HTC phones.
Also the connectivity of the HTC devices is utter rubbish compared to the S3, can't even link up via Bluetooth. Afaik anyway. ( unless the kernel supports it, I think u had to install an aosp ROM, or cm type ROM)
It was enough to sway me away from it and quite a few devs too, but there are still a fair few developing for it.
