Can I get stock (Samsung) ROM somewhere? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Can I get the Samsung ROM's for both Gingerbread , HoneyComb and ICS? Are they free to download for the SGS2 (yes I searched, but I'm quite frankly not sure that I've found the "real" unmodified Samsung ROM's)?

Odd conclusion - consider that it takes longer to write a forum post than to Google the matter. And, I just want whatever I had before this crappy ICS.
Besides, the link you provided is a fan site right. From a noob perspective, no better than any other link I found myself. As a noob, you have no way to determine if that page is "for real" or just out to ruin your phone.
EDIT: In fact that page is useless . I Need official Samsung ROM's to revert my ICS update. For I9100 LPQ.

Umm, the General Forum is filled with stock ROMs.

Sammobile is a fansite. You can't expect to find all of the old ROMs on samsung's website, can you? Honestly, if you can't find whatever you are looking for on sammobile, I doubt you should messing with your firmware.

Most of Intratech's links are down especially the GB ones, and i also have been looking to change from ICS so I'm going to try the one from samfirmware it's the closest to what i wanted. and seems legit as well.

Try checkfusdownloader. Mind you, it only gives the latest roms in your country.

Thanks all. And my apologies for the harsh tone in my reply (amozonesk). I'm having some "off-days"...

Ok, but say I want Gingerbread back - how do I select the correct version? I mean, the "XXLPQ" stuff I have now is ICS specific isn't it?
--
Werner

To get the 'correct' version of GB, get the PC version of Checkfus (search for it on here/Google). This will enable you to download the latest firmware available for your carrier/country which should be GB assuming your carrier hasn't rolled out ICS yet.
If they have rolled out ICS, Checkfus will also tell you the initial firmware released for the the phone based on carrier/country, and with that info you can probably download same from somewhere like Samfirmware.com

What version are you looking for? i just flashed back GB 2.3.5 stock that i had before so maybe i can help you out with the version that you're looking for

Thanks! And I have already updated to ICS using Kies. You wouldn't know how to get Check Fus to report the original FW?
--
Werner

Yeah. It's pretty much self explanatory ?
When you open Checkfus, you choose Android/phone model/country & it populates the fields under Firmware Info on the left hand side with the original firmware that was supplied for that carrier/country. As I said in my previous post, you might be able to download this from Samfirmware/elsewhere if you need it.

Well no not self explanatory to a noob. That would be like on the left side it said "Original Firmware"
One last thing that might be self explanatory to the rest of you. I have also downloaded the mobile app. And I live in Denmark. So you''d guess that I should choose "Denmark" in the "Region" dropdown? But the value in the dropdown (besides "Denmark") does not correspond to any of the values from the Mobile app.
Is it the "Product code" from the mobile app? I can find the product code which matches "Nordic countries". This is also true - but if I didn't have the mobile app I would have downloaded the wrong firmware (Denmark)?
I'm being very thorough here I know - but I got the feeling that flashing the wrong FW would leave my phone useless...

Only if when "flashing the wrong FW", you flash a FW meant for a completely different model of phone. (i.e. NOT a GT-I9100)
As long as the firmware you flash is meant for a GT-I9100 (NOTE: GT-I9100G is a COMPLETELY different model phone), then you should be safe.

[Q]What kernel?

Sorry, for bumping this, does anyone knows how to help me in this? There must be some log inside of the NAND that says what the original shipment was...
The only thing I could suggest is to look for the most current 3 firmware for your region. Try http://samfirmware.com/ - it may help.

Ah, ok, a friend of mine got his SGS2 few days after me from 3 as well, so I assume it will have the same firmware? What are the chances of him getting different one than me, while I was getting it in store, but he got it delivered?
EDIT: Ok, so I got the details from a friend with same phone, so the FW should be as follows:
I9100NEKD5
2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE1-CL181974

gingerbread.XWKE1
So, now I am good again, in case something goes wrong, I know which FW to pick to unroot Thanks

Thanks, I have most likely located my FW, will download as soon as I come home, now you have mentioned that my product code will determine which FW I had originaly, Where do I find my product code, and where to check that? Also, would not product code give you details about non-branded OS, and then when phone gots branded by provider(three.ie in my case) those might have change?
Ok, seems that I got this resolved and using app called SYSTEM INFO I found most of the information I needed...
JJ, you look like you know some stuff, Hows with rooting and unrooting, is flashing back stock kernel(I have so far only flashed Kernel, nothing else was needed as of yet, this is my first Samsung, so I am trying to get slowly into it) going to remove all traces of root? Or will technicians in Samsung be able to see that its been rooted(in case of warranty repair needed)

Stock firmware problem

Before I continue I just want to say that I have looked around, used the search button, but haven't found anything that will solve my problem.
So I was fairly unpleased with the custom rom I had flashed on my Sgs2 and wanted to flash my stock firmware (2.3.3 XWKE2) and so I went into the official thread for firmwares.
At first I tried out a 2.3.4 stock firmware, but kies would'nt let me update so then I continued looking and found a stock firmware that matched the one my phone originally had (android version 2.3.3 XWKE7)
I checked the codes and downloaded the NEE one since I live in Sweden. Flashed it with no problems but then when I went on Kies to try and update again I got "Your unit doesn't support updates through Kies"
It then also said: I9100XWKE2/1910OXXKE2/I9100XXKDJ/I9100XWKE2 (KOR)
Why did it say KOR? I thought I had downloaded the Swedish/Nordic firmware?
Can someone help me flash the real original firmware for my phone so I can update through Kies?
And your posting this in the dev forum because...?
This sections is for people to post developments not questions, help topics etc. Thats whey we have a Q&A and General forums.
Take a couple of seconds to look at this forum/topics again and then ask yourself does my topic look remotely at home here
Well, KE2 clearly isn't KE7, so it's doubtful that you flashed your original firmware.
This is stock Nordic KE2, taken from this thread.
If all you want is stock firmware, install this then connect to Kies and it should update to the latest Nordic firmware. Then back it up!! I'm in Norway, can't remember what is the most recent version, been on custom ROMs for a long, long time... Lykke til.
What custom ROM did you try, and why didn't you like it?

But my phone originally had the KE2 on it when I bought it. Couldn't wait for the Swedish release for KE7 and began flashing custom firmwares.
That is the exact link that I downloaded, from that exact forum. That's why I find it weird that Kies doesn't recognize it.
The custom ROM I tried was a leaked version of 2.3.5 from Frankenstein. I was about to download and flash another ROM but every time I asked for someone's suggestion they would always say the taste differs from person to person. I then responded that I just want a high performance and quick ROM, and never got an answer so that is why I wanted to flash to an original Firmware from Kies.
You ask 10 people which rom they consider good and you will get 10 answers, some of the most popular being:
Hyperdroid (personal fav): great base, great kernel, OTA app for mods/updates
Villanrom: Older base, very stable, some limitation of available mods due to the older base
Checkrom: Never been my cup of tea but people seem to like it, it has the kitchen app for mods
That is the exact link that I downloaded, from that exact forum. That's why I find it weird that Kies doesn't recognize it.
Flashing firmware means somewhere you changed codes and KIES dies not recognize .
A removal of KIES plus all registry entries may solve the issue .

Do you mean uninstalling it completely and re-installing it?
I'll try that and see if it works.
You need to have a "stock" combo of stock firmware, aka a modem, "PDA" (kernel+rom) and csc that where shipped together, otherwise KIES wont recognise it.
I tried uninstalling and re-installing it but it didn't work. Still get the "Your unit doesn't support programupdating through Kies" message.

You require your saved original rom or one that nearly matches it .

Carrier branded .

Was it a file with one big .tar in it? if so thats everything.
Why do you want to update with KIES? Just use odin to flash a KIES release, there all in that thread, and its counterpart with the carrier branded firmwares.
Note, kies wont be able to updates "frankenstein" releases which are mix/match.

Yes it was a big .tar file!
I really don't know how to explain it. I love this phone, and want to get the most out of it (custom roms, overclock, root) but I'm not that good with all of these different concepts and there is always that fear of bricking the phone.
Also I go to college right now, and am a bit behind so I really don't have time to go through the xda forums on a daily/weekly basis, so I thought that when the new firmwares (mainly a official/perfected version of the ICS) updates are available I could just log on to Kies and update them while saving my self some time.

KIES is pretty crap and does this all the time, I have never had an update though KIES so im out of ideas
The one big tar file should have been right though, unless you picked a mix/match one.

Nope, did not pick a mix/matched one from what I know. I'm gonna try one of the firmwares from the previous link you sent me. If it doesn't work there then I'll just continue flashing through Odin.
Quick question though, it says:
XWKI8:
Firmware info: PDA:XWKI8| PHONE:NEKI2| CSC:HTSKI1
XWKI8 Stock Kernel:http://www.multiupload.com/4O6DVGUGSU
Password: [email protected]
What do I do with the stock kernel? Flash it? If so where? (for example csc?)

[Q] Getting hold of UK carrier firmware

I've been trying to get hold of my phone's most-recent-but-one carrier firmware (2.3.3 BOKG2 version for UK T-mobile). Intratech's thread for carrier-branded firmware lists it as:
Firmware info: PDA:BOKG2|PHONE:BOKG1|CSC:TMUKF1
Unfortunately, all the upload sites this links to seem to have removed the files for this firmware. Does anyone have advice on how to download it? (Apologies for posting on Q&A forum, but I can't yet post to the forum that covers this topic)
Thanks!

Completely agree with you. I'd ask him directly but (for good reason) he asks not to be PM'ed with such requests and, being a very recent noob, I can't yet post to his thread on the subject. My hope is that your second suggestion will work and someone might be able to help.
If you want the most recent firmware available for SGS2 on T-Mobile UK, try Checkfus. That will allow you to download the most recent firmware available for your phone/carrier/country that would normally be available via Kies.
Do a search on here for it.
Thanks for the suggestion - useful to know about checkfus for the future. Alas, it only downloads the most recent firmware and I'm after one of the older ones that used to be posted via the "multiupload" links. Many of these no longer function, seemingly having become casualties of the fallout from the Megaupload action by the US authorities: I think they have been pulled by the upload sites' administrators.
There seems to be a great effort to make affected firmware available again, but it looks like there's a large archive to re-upload. As far as I know, that was the only way to get hold of original carrier firmware that one can flash through Odin.
I've asked in Intra's thread for a DL link for this firmware. I'll post said link in this thread for you if he comes up with one.
Failing this go into a CPW service center or Sammy service center with a flash drive etc and ask the to load one on there for you.
Or use google.

Thanks very much to all of you - hopefully MistahBungle's post works.
cooza - thanks for your suggestion, but it's actually the BOKK1 firmware that I'm trying to roll back. There are a number of improvements over the previous version, but the camera wasn't one of them (much lower exposure levels than before), plus bluetooth peripherals seem to auto disconnect. So, back to 2.3.3 if I can until ICS arrives!
Keep an eye on the last page on Intra's thread in case he posts it when I'm not around (time diff & all).

Mistahbungle I hate to come here and do this but I'm also new to this. I want to root and use the latest firmware and I've been reading a lot. I've seen what you've done here and that is pretty cool. Thanks Mistahbungle & woebetide
I'll download woebetide's kernel asap. I can see why Intra's surprised at my wanting to use old firmware, but it's simply that the camera and Bluetooth works better on 2.3.3 than T-mobile UK's latest version. If anyone out there has compared the latest T-Mob UK firmware to the 2.4.4 UK unbranded XXKI1/XWKI4 and has views on camera exposure performance, it'd be interesting to hear them. I'm trying to roll back because everything seems under exposed on that 2.3.5 BOKK1. It's a fairly esoteric comparison, but you never know...

The link for SAM (Peru) in Intratech's official firmware thread is not multiload, and works.
Alternatively, you can probably find any firmware you want on samfirmware.com, or checkfus.
Does the type of firmware really matter? or will getting the Peru one make a difference in the phone, my phone uses the TTT version so i wanted to get that back, my apologies if i just asked a noobish question but this is my first time at this sort of thing. and also the Sam (peru) link isn't working either.

I honestly don't know what difference there is. Probably just the CSCs, (Country Specific Codes) which may or may not matter for you. Will probably make it so Kies doesn't recognize your phone for update. If you don't use Kies, it probably won't matter. But if you want the TTT version specifically, then, again:

EDIT: sorry, the link on Intratech's thread used to work. I guess it doesn't anymore. However, again, see above quote for alternatives.
Ok i found one on Samfirmware, will try it out, and thanks for the help so far.

[Q] What Stock Firmware to Flash?

Hi all. I would like to keep my stock firmware up to date on my rooted S3, but have a few questions about this. From what I can tell the easiest way to do this seems to be by downloading the newest firmware (say from SamMobile) and using Odin to push it to the phone (since I can't use OTA updates and Kies refuses to connect to my phone). What confuses me about the stock firmware for this phone are the different country/carrier codes. Do I need to be concerned with using one from a different country than me (I'm in the US), or are they just generic firmwares that can be used by any country? SamMobile shows a bunch of new firmwares for the S3 released in February but they all have different country/carriers, what's the point of this? Currently my phone is running baseband version I9300XXELL4 which doesn't seem to coincide with the US, which I guess is also part of what is confusing me.
Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the quick response!
If the country/carrier codes do not matter then why are there so many different firmwares with the different countries?

Modem may or may not be better CSC has local area network settings .
Simple is that you flash a firmware and if you have network problems you try a diffrent modem .

I've checked my CSC and it comes up as unknown - is this an issue or does this need to get fixed before I update my firmware? My phone works fine right now. Also, how do you try a different "modem". Do you mean just flash a different version of the firmware?
Believe me I have checked every sticky in the I9300 forum and none of them explain the difference between the different stock firmwares. None of those links are helpful .

In that case not a clue do i have .
Suggestion is that you actually start at the beginning and learn .
Start by reading the unhelpful links which you have failed to bother to read .
The one about modems may be relevant or not .
XDA does not spoon-feed .

Wow, I come here to politely ask one question (essentially) and this is what I get. In case you have issues reading, read this: I have read every single sticky thread in its entirety (something it seems you haven't done, might I add) and none of them answer the question I am asking. I'm not asking you to "spoon feed" me and hold my hand through rooting my phone or how to use Odin (since all of that info is on sticky threads). I am simply asking what the difference is between stock firmwares that have different country codes. If you cannot answer that, please do not waste my time by responding to this thread. It would do you well to read my entire first post before giving me answers to questions I did not ask to begin with.

Thank you again, and I will try out a random firmware to see if it works. I still am curious as to what the difference is though.
There is a very good guide to csc/modems /baseband etc....All in the stickies .....that you diligently read
That would be that one then that has no information .
