[Q] What Stock Firmware to Flash? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all. I would like to keep my stock firmware up to date on my rooted S3, but have a few questions about this. From what I can tell the easiest way to do this seems to be by downloading the newest firmware (say from SamMobile) and using Odin to push it to the phone (since I can't use OTA updates and Kies refuses to connect to my phone). What confuses me about the stock firmware for this phone are the different country/carrier codes. Do I need to be concerned with using one from a different country than me (I'm in the US), or are they just generic firmwares that can be used by any country? SamMobile shows a bunch of new firmwares for the S3 released in February but they all have different country/carriers, what's the point of this? Currently my phone is running baseband version I9300XXELL4 which doesn't seem to coincide with the US, which I guess is also part of what is confusing me.
Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the quick response!
If the country/carrier codes do not matter then why are there so many different firmwares with the different countries?

i do not have the answer for that since i am just new in flashing roms.

Modem may or may not be better CSC has local area network settings .
Simple is that you flash a firmware and if you have network problems you try a diffrent modem .

I've checked my CSC and it comes up as unknown - is this an issue or does this need to get fixed before I update my firmware? My phone works fine right now. Also, how do you try a different "modem". Do you mean just flash a different version of the firmware?
Believe me I have checked every sticky in the I9300 forum and none of them explain the difference between the different stock firmwares. None of those links are helpful .

In that case not a clue do i have .
Suggestion is that you actually start at the beginning and learn .
Start by reading the unhelpful links which you have failed to bother to read .
The one about modems may be relevant or not .
XDA does not spoon-feed .

Wow, I come here to politely ask one question (essentially) and this is what I get. In case you have issues reading, read this: I have read every single sticky thread in its entirety (something it seems you haven't done, might I add) and none of them answer the question I am asking. I'm not asking you to "spoon feed" me and hold my hand through rooting my phone or how to use Odin (since all of that info is on sticky threads). I am simply asking what the difference is between stock firmwares that have different country codes. If you cannot answer that, please do not waste my time by responding to this thread. It would do you well to read my entire first post before giving me answers to questions I did not ask to begin with.

Thank you again, and I will try out a random firmware to see if it works. I still am curious as to what the difference is though.

There is a very good guide to csc/modems /baseband etc....All in the stickies .....that you diligently read

That would be that one then that has no information .

Stock firmware problem

Before I continue I just want to say that I have looked around, used the search button, but haven't found anything that will solve my problem.
So I was fairly unpleased with the custom rom I had flashed on my Sgs2 and wanted to flash my stock firmware (2.3.3 XWKE2) and so I went into the official thread for firmwares.
At first I tried out a 2.3.4 stock firmware, but kies would'nt let me update so then I continued looking and found a stock firmware that matched the one my phone originally had (android version 2.3.3 XWKE7)
I checked the codes and downloaded the NEE one since I live in Sweden. Flashed it with no problems but then when I went on Kies to try and update again I got "Your unit doesn't support updates through Kies"
It then also said: I9100XWKE2/1910OXXKE2/I9100XXKDJ/I9100XWKE2 (KOR)
Why did it say KOR? I thought I had downloaded the Swedish/Nordic firmware?
Can someone help me flash the real original firmware for my phone so I can update through Kies?
And your posting this in the dev forum because...?
This sections is for people to post developments not questions, help topics etc. Thats whey we have a Q&A and General forums.
Take a couple of seconds to look at this forum/topics again and then ask yourself does my topic look remotely at home here
Well, KE2 clearly isn't KE7, so it's doubtful that you flashed your original firmware.
This is stock Nordic KE2, taken from this thread.
If all you want is stock firmware, install this then connect to Kies and it should update to the latest Nordic firmware. Then back it up!! I'm in Norway, can't remember what is the most recent version, been on custom ROMs for a long, long time... Lykke til.
What custom ROM did you try, and why didn't you like it?

But my phone originally had the KE2 on it when I bought it. Couldn't wait for the Swedish release for KE7 and began flashing custom firmwares.
That is the exact link that I downloaded, from that exact forum. That's why I find it weird that Kies doesn't recognize it.
The custom ROM I tried was a leaked version of 2.3.5 from Frankenstein. I was about to download and flash another ROM but every time I asked for someone's suggestion they would always say the taste differs from person to person. I then responded that I just want a high performance and quick ROM, and never got an answer so that is why I wanted to flash to an original Firmware from Kies.
You ask 10 people which rom they consider good and you will get 10 answers, some of the most popular being:
Hyperdroid (personal fav): great base, great kernel, OTA app for mods/updates
Villanrom: Older base, very stable, some limitation of available mods due to the older base
Checkrom: Never been my cup of tea but people seem to like it, it has the kitchen app for mods
That is the exact link that I downloaded, from that exact forum. That's why I find it weird that Kies doesn't recognize it.
Flashing firmware means somewhere you changed codes and KIES dies not recognize .
A removal of KIES plus all registry entries may solve the issue .

Do you mean uninstalling it completely and re-installing it?
I'll try that and see if it works.
You need to have a "stock" combo of stock firmware, aka a modem, "PDA" (kernel+rom) and csc that where shipped together, otherwise KIES wont recognise it.
I tried uninstalling and re-installing it but it didn't work. Still get the "Your unit doesn't support programupdating through Kies" message.

Where can I find all that?
When I look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
All I can see is the one I used and that's just a PDA file
You require your saved original rom or one that nearly matches it .
From the branded /providers roms post .
Carrier branded .

Was it a file with one big .tar in it? if so thats everything.
Why do you want to update with KIES? Just use odin to flash a KIES release, there all in that thread, and its counterpart with the carrier branded firmwares.
Note, kies wont be able to updates "frankenstein" releases which are mix/match.

Yes it was a big .tar file!
I really don't know how to explain it. I love this phone, and want to get the most out of it (custom roms, overclock, root) but I'm not that good with all of these different concepts and there is always that fear of bricking the phone.
Also I go to college right now, and am a bit behind so I really don't have time to go through the xda forums on a daily/weekly basis, so I thought that when the new firmwares (mainly a official/perfected version of the ICS) updates are available I could just log on to Kies and update them while saving my self some time.

KIES is pretty crap and does this all the time, I have never had an update though KIES so im out of ideas
The one big tar file should have been right though, unless you picked a mix/match one.

Nope, did not pick a mix/matched one from what I know. I'm gonna try one of the firmwares from the previous link you sent me. If it doesn't work there then I'll just continue flashing through Odin.
Quick question though, it says:
XWKI8:
Firmware info: PDA:XWKI8| PHONE:NEKI2| CSC:HTSKI1
XWKI8 Stock Kernel:http://www.multiupload.com/4O6DVGUGSU
Password: [email protected]
What do I do with the stock kernel? Flash it? If so where? (for example csc?)

GT-9100T

Okay basically im not sure this is the right section so i'll keep it breif.
I'm new to Rooting/Roming
got an samsung galaxy sII for xmas.
I want to root/rom. But it's a GT-i9100T , and i can't find anything about rooting them on the forums so if someone could throw me in the right direction or explain how its works i'd appreciate it.
I9100T is for all intents and purposes the same (hardware-wise) as the I9100. Many of the questions you probably are asking or want to ask have been asked before.
Google "site:forum.xda-developers.com i9100t", and you will get a ton of posts, most of your questions will be answered in them.
Please keep in mind forum rule #1: search before posting.
It should be the same, kernel version is important, I guess you could use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399

Sorry i didn't list one of my main things i searched the forums and everyone about the GT 9100 are all with vodaphone (ones in aus) and i'm with telstra im not sure if that changes things? just wish there was a sticky explaining all this haha.
They use different kernels, but the procedure should be the same, just find the right kernel for your phone, and you can root it. I used this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414 but CF-Root might be better since it has CWM which allows you to flash different ROMs. But that's if you want to flash ROMs .

I know that it requires something about insecure and secure kernals to root haha, i know almost nothing else. But how come it only requires the kf4? and not the whole DVKF4? haha.
It's just their way of "branding" kernels. The rest is a signature for something else .

KF4 is the build, (I believe K is the year, F is the month, and 4 is the build number) the DV portion indicates where and for what carrier (if applicable). It's some wonky code Samsung came up with. I don't know the logic behind how they picked them though.
DVKF4 is for Telstra in Australia, from what I can tell.
Edit to add: forgot to say; carrier and location are unimportant when rooting, so that's why I said any insecure KF4 kernel should work for you.

So i'd just need to find the kernels, and then i assume find out about what program to root and flash with? and then how to install roms and stuff etc?
Yep. Everything you need to know is in the Stickies, CFRoot thread, the carrier branded firmware thread & the country specific/non branded firmware thread.
So far as flashing custom roms or kernels go, follow whatever instructions these particular roms or kernels have.
Those firmware threads I linked you to have tutorials that shows you how to use Odin which you can use to root your phone initially. You can also flash stock roms if you ever need to at some point in the future with it. Once your phone is rooted, most custom roms/kernels are flashed via CWM (or Mobile Odin).

Hey guys can someone please help me asap,

Like a stooge even though I didnt really know what i was doing I tried to put on ICS on my phone and replaced the PHONE, PDA, BOOTLOADER AND CSC files on my phone using odin 1.8 and i really hate my phone right now it barely works, I have been on the net and mainly this forum all day but all the links/downloads arent working, can somebody please tell me where i can download the stock firmware/kernel whatever it is called for my phone with Vodafone Australia, thank you so much in advance, thanks.
download from http://www.samfirmware.com/

At the risk of repeating myself for the 8,921,764th time...If you want the original stock firmware that came with the phone, search Samfirmware.com & follow whatever instructions they have for firmware downloaded from their site.
If you're happy with the latest stock firmware (which might be the same as the firmware which was on the phone when you bought it), get the PC version of Checkfus (search for it on here/Google). This will enable you to download the latest firmware available for your phone model/country/carrier that you'd normally get via OTA update with Kies. If you do choose this, flash the firmware package you download following the instructions here.

Generic Firmware

My Galaxy s has jsut arrived, I want to flash it with generic firmware without rooting it............for now. Can anyone point me in the right direction of an easy to follow tutorial. Thanks in advance guys
Install Samsung KIES on your PC, connect your phone via USB and open KIES. If there is an update for your firmware it will notifiy you.
You'll also be able to check manually by clicking on 'check for new firmware' or something to that affect on the main screen of KIES.
You won't be able to put on custom roms etc without root
Consider trying this also: On your phone, go to settings --> About Phone --> Software --> Update.
This should check for any latest updates for your phone, although i can't remember this option working for me though. KIES should be fine.

need help here, have questions

guys I have a i9100 laying here and it's running GB stock rom now, and I've been wondering what sort of method is the best to get to the latest official ics rom? I saw the thread with official samsung roms which is flashable with odin but I've seen cases of stuck in flashing factoryfs.img in odin at the first few percents? and things like eMMC bug? Since the device isn't mine and the owner tried to upgrade using kies but never got it through due to slow download in kies.
Settings/about device/system update
I prefer u leaked jellybean for s2 if u need guide how to flash just follow this steps

Well firstly please do not use silly topic titles such as this. This is a questions forum, you have no need to put your topic title as "have questions" that's a given and doesnt give anybody browsing forum any info. Topic titles are supposed to be descriptive of topic and it baffles me why so many people find that concept hard. You will get more views and potential help by giving brief description of topic instead of generic crap.
And as already stated, use the inbuilt system update.

As safe as it gets.

There is no need to worry about that crap. Its just n00bs who have other stuff running in background that interfere with flashing or they low battery etc.
Just install latest Kies to get drivers and flash via ODIN according to guides here, making sure not to use any .pit file or repartition etc.
