[Q] Remote shutdown without server - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I work in the IT department of a college and i am looking for an app that I can enter an ip address/host name and remotely shutdown/restart a computer. I know there are apps out there that do it but all I've come across are ones that require a program to be installed on the system ahead of time.
basically I am looking for an app that acts just like matcode's remote shutdown program
I've tried searching but but the results are too flooded with programs that require software to be setup ahead of time.
any insight would be great and thanks ahead of time.
Edit I am rebooting windows 7 computers and have an atrix 4g phone

[Q] What do you use ...

Hello everyone,
I received a Samsung Vibrant S for christmas and am a real noob to the android scene. I come from the world of WinMo 5.0 so please bear with me.
I have been playing with this thing for a just a few days so far and am hesitant to root the phone as I don't know yet all the features I currently have in my possession, let alone the amount of money this 'super computer' costs. But I am enjoying the phone so far.
So, I have at the moment just a few questions and would really like your opinions and suggestions on what you use to do certain things.
My Vibrant has the Eclair 2.1-upd1, UVJI6. I'm currently running the system without a data plan, just a basic phone service. With my WinMo 5.0 and having internet at home, a wifi on the rails to/from work, internet at work, there is no need to spend an extra 30 a month for a data plan.
First, I need to sync my outlook calendar on my desktop to the phone. I have tried Kies but the thing doesn't recognize the phone half the time and the other half is used in trying to figure out why there is no connection.
[Q] What do you use to sync your calendar events with an XP / Windows7_64 MS outlook calendar? I am not necessarily interested in syncing email, I have enough of that already, no need to add it to my phone. I would like to sync my personal contacts though, seperate from those at work.
[Q] I have noticed there are very few places to download an APK file. Most are simply installed from the market. From the old WinMo 5.0 days, I had to watch what applications would run on what systems, so my practice has been to download the application and save it to a disk so when I needed to reset my phone/PDA, I could just pull the applications off the disk. You can't do that now with the market. So what do you use to back up your purchased/free applications so you can get them back if you need to?
[Q] I've noticed there are so many upgrades that can be done to this phone, and with all the posts here at XDA, it is very overwhelming. My question here is what about the apps from the market, can they be used with any version of android?
[Q] I have many more questions, but I know you all would simply refer me to the endless amount of posts and suggest I do a little research. The problem I am finding with this approach is the mass amount of data and all the little quirks that set one issue/solution different from another. You can easily spend weeks going through page after page to try and get an answer to a single question. So my last question is this; Do you have any suggestions on how to weed through this conglomerate data to find what you seek without spending too much time?
Thank you all for your insight and hospitality.
First off I would say check out the bible in the development section . You will find most of your answers there . As for your question about app capability most android apps will run on any android phone with a few exceptions . To back up your apps you could use TitaniumBackup but you most be rooted . Read up before you do anything . If you get stuck our are uncertain just ask . The community is usually very helpful .

[Q] help with Citrix Receiver

Using the Nook Tablet with CM7 alpha that was briefly available here.
I'm trying to access my employer's citrix server. I've installed the receiver and configured everything properly. I can login, but before it displays my apps, I get an error that says:
Too many server redirects.
I get the same error when accessing the web interface using the default Browser or Dolphin. I installed UCBrowser, and it properly displays the apps. However, when I click them, it simply downloads the ica file, rather than opening it. If I use a file manager and click on the ica file, nothing happens. If I long press it and select Citrix Receiver, nothing happens.
I have the same problem on my Evo4G. However, no problems from Windows, Linux, or iPhone.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this working?

Slow connection speed in emulator

So I've been developing some stuff here and there for Android, and I noticed my device emulator has a RIDICULOUSLY low connection speed. I'm not talking about performance which is fine, I'm talking just about 'network speed'. What it means is that transferring files to and from the AVD using ADB (which as you may know relies on networking protocols) is EXTREMELY slow, and what's worse, internet transfers are VERY very slow. Therefor, when I'm working with online content (which my app, and let's face it - most apps are about) it's EXTREMELY slow.
All I found on Google is people complaining about the AVD itself being slow, which isn't my problem, but I tried those solutions anyway and it didn't help (naturally).
It's worth mentioning that those same apps work great and about ten times faster on an actual android device.
Anyone experienced it and/or has any idea what to do about it?

[Q] How can I read texts from my Thunderbolt with my laptop(touchscreen broken)?

My Thunderbolt touchscreen abruptly began malfunctioning in that it will not unlock. Outside of the touchscreen, the phone seems to be working. I can see see calls and texts coming in, but cannot unlock to answer or read them. Best Buy and Verizon are both willing to replace the phone free of charge, but neither can tell me of a way to save my texts. At the minimum I would like to read through them one more time as some have information I really want. I have my phone set up to be recognized as a hard drive when I connect it to my laptop through the USB, and this is still working. Is there a way to access the texts? I have posted on other android boards and most recommend apps or back-up services that (if I understand correctly) require installation on the phone, which I don't know how to accomplish with the perpetually locked screen. I had considered rooting the phone, but after educating myself further, I now understand that the SMS data may be lost in the attempt. One respondent recommended this board, telling me that I would need to access the root system files, and he/she thought that there was a good chance of it being do-able inside ADB. They suggested that perhaps some one on here could walk me through it. Incidentally, regarding the touchscreen itself, I tried every fix I could track down: reboot, battery removal, even magnet proximity, and short durations in the fridge to cool it further! Of course, I could have attempted opening it up, but didn't want to void the warranty and/or guarantee that would currently replace my phone for free (I know rooting might have done the same, but might have been a good chance at salvaging the texts). My apologies for length, but wanted to be thorough. Any suggestions are appreciated, thank-you.

10 days later...but I would run androidscreencast if you can get your device going with USB debugging. Then you can either just look at your texts or then also install SMS Backup & Restore or something like that to dump your texts in an xml to your SD card.
No root is required for androidscreencast, but it is required if you want to use the mouse input for "screen touches" via your PC.

[Q] Sharing my computers VPN connection to Android over internet

Hello All,
I just ordered a Lenovo S2110 Android tablet with keyboard dock. The idea was to use this 20 hour machine on road trips to do work related activities. For my job, I need to connect via VPN to get access to my work's intranet. I can do that fine in Windows on my pc or my work laptop. I was hoping to do this via Android and the Cisco AnyConnect program. Unfortunately my company doesnt have the license for Cisco AnyConnect mobile so I cannot connect directly via android.
Is it at all possible to connect and share the connection via my home pc that is connected via VPN via the internet somehow? Meaning, can I have VPN running at home and if I am away, connect through the internet and get the VPN tunnel to my android so I can connect to the work websites through the Android browser? Or access my shared network drive?
Only other option I see is using Team Viewer of Splash Desktop to connect as a remote session, but that is not preferable .
