For reasons I won't go into (mainly because they're boring) I deleted Google talk.apk from Root Explorer (I was following instructions to update the app but those didn't work) and now I can't get it back. I've factory reset the phone to no avail. I have Google Voice installed, but can't seem to get talk back. If anyone could help, it would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks!
BTW, I did a search before posing the ?, but the only solution I found was for a different phone, and when I ran those steps, when I tried to open Talk, it would just FC.

Have you tried snagging the files from another Photon and installing? Can you post what steps you have already taken please?
Yes....factory reset won't restore system apps. You can flash Juggs update.zip and that will restore for you. Then would have to root again of course but is easy enough.
Just download a custom rom , unzip it and copy the required app to your device.

I should of said that instead of grabbing it from another phone. Thanks faria.

Thanks for the info. If I flash Juggs update, will it hurt anything (since I already am on the latest OTA)?

I will try that as well. When I did a search, I found where someone had posted the talk.apk.zip file which I copied to my sd card, unzipped and then copied to system/apps (through Root Explorer), but that is when I started getting FC's. I then installed it (from Root Explorer) even with the same result. It may be that it wasn't the right version maybe? So if I extract it from a Rom, do I just copy it to the System/Apps folder (using Root Explorer)? Sorry for the confusion, and thanks much for the help.

I don't (and didn't) have that file, only talk.apk (which of course was deleted). Isn't the odex like the cache? If so, would it have been removed when I ran App Cache Cleaner?

Correct.
Well short of getting the apk from the very same rom version ,you will have to reflash he rom.
ps.
there the new google talk with video here in the forum, that probably would fix your problem.

Hey faria, thanks! I did the top link last night (that was the one that I copied the talk.apk.zip (2.2) over to my SD card, extracted, and then copied to /system/apps/. I installed from there (btw, I did change to R/W first), but all I got was FC's on talk. I'm thinking I needed to reboot after installing, maybe? I'm not really sure why I would need to reboot though, but if that is all it takes, I'm happy. I will try that when I get home tonight (don't have a spare cable with me right now). Thank you sooo much for your help.

If you still end up having problems.....
Juggs update.zip is just the latest OTA with a few minor modifications. So basically it will restore all to pretty close out of the box and restore any system apps.
However, you can also flash the sbf which is the actual newest OTA exactly like the one pushed from Motorola/Sprint. This requires using rsd and isn't quite as easy as the update.zip which can just be flashed via bootstrap recovery.
Any one of these methods will require you to root the phone again.

Yeah, I'm gonna flash the sbf, I just downloaded it and installed the drivers and stuff, but I think I'm gonna wait until tomorrow night (only because it's been a really long day, started at 4 am MST just ending), so I think my brain is fried. Thanks for all your help today, I'll let ya know tomorrow how it goes. What a freakin pain in the arse this talk.apk has become....haha
Update: I flashed the sbf, re-rooted, and everything is great now, have Talk back. Thanks for all the help!

Awesome, thanks man. Will test it now.
Replaced using root explorer and now SMS is gone? Not sure what went wrong, looking into it now.
Edit: Tried a reboot, still gone. Was I suppose to change permissions/owner in root explorer?
Can't seem to figure out what went wrong...I'm going to assume replacing it via root explorer is a no go.
Swyped from my MIUI'D Fascinate.

that's happened to me with MIUI in the past...i just unzipped the extended settings mod, dropped it in the system/app folder, rezipped it, then flashed in recovery... try rebooting a few times.. that's how I've gotten it back in the past... hope i helped.
Well what I'm doing right now is replacing the mms.apk in the 1.10.14 zip and flashing it. I've done that on previous builds and it worked. If I am using the Extended Settings, will I have to replace it in that?
EDIT: Replaced mms.apk via winrar on my laptop, flashed, sms app still gone.

if you are reflashing the entire rom zip, then yes, you will have to reflash the extended settings mod again after first boot.
Sorry to confuse you, but what I meant was do I replace the mms.apk in the 1.10.14 zip or the extended settings zip?

Yeah, kind of confused myself on how to install this. Tried Root Explorer and package installer and both say "application not installed" . Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
t
Well, I officially had a very dumb moment. I got frustrated, and went back to 1.9.9, which has been the most stable for me. Noticing my Messaging icon was still gone. Upon a closer look, it was there, just some how got moved to my last screen. Was probably there the whole time, I just assumed it'd be in the same spot. Doh!
Going to try this again with 1.10.14
easiest thing to do is use root explorer... navigate to the extended settings mod zip you downloaded... long press the zip... choose extract all... go to extracted... place the mms.apk in system/app... back out to original mod folder... long press the folder... choose zip... choose go to zip... move to wherever you want on sd card... flash in recovery
Thank you very much for this, this is amazing! I just over wrote the mms.apk in the flashable 10.14.3 zip that I had and flashed, everything working, it is now a perfect port! I love the individual notification/sms sounds in the control panel, I had to flash back to 9.16 for working mms, now I can keep .14, thanks again!
Replaced mms.apk in the 1.10.14 zip, flashed, and all is working well. Thanks a bunch Rick.

Works perfectly so far. Thanks!

Hey man, serious thanks Rick S. You've made me a happy soul. I appreciate you doing what you do.

Is this for 1.10.14.3 or 1.10.14. Because I still can't send pics on 1.10.14

ive tried both what streebs87 did and what Ricky suggested. and still cant send mms.
MMS is working perfectly, thanks, but BLN is not working for SMS/MMS, works for everything else. Anyone have any idea? I'm running 1.10.14.3 with extended settings and Glitch's kernel.
Edit: I reflashed the kernel and no change but now i noticed that when a message comes in it goes on and off for a split second. If i touch the soft keys they will light up and stay on.

Nope I've tried both on wifi and 3g. Still stuck on sending. I'm wondering if I just go all the way back to stock and reflashing 1.10.14 will do anything... if doing a full wipe didn't fix it then will going back to stock change anything
So I was using Titanium Backup and accidentally deleted the camera app without a backup so I am hoping someone can send me the Note I717 stock camera APK...thank you!
galaxy note I717 camera.apk
I tried sending via PM but evidently the site was having problems with me sending a PM. I would be more than happy to send it to you. What is your email address?
[email protected]
thank you so much
you should have mail (;
i got it thanks, but the app will not install, do i drop the file in a specific folder?
should go in "system/app"

You're welcome, sorry it didn't work out for you.

Glad to hear that.
This same thing happend too me today, I was trying to install a mod for the samsungcamera.apk and i copied a back up of the camera.apk and went to install the modded one but it wont let me..so i said screw it ill go back to the stock one..and when i click on it too install it says application not installed.
Soo..in other words im SOL but ill have a look around and see where i can find a resolution. The problem isnt that i dont have the stock camera.apk cuz i do have a back up its just it refuses too install now... ughhh Lol
***UPDATE***
I could not install the samsungcamera.apk stock & the modded one.
I tried everything possible..flashing it through cwm as a .zip file & had signature verification turned off
even tried copying and pasting manually..
What I just resorted to just installing camera360 from the playstore..
this solved my issue of not having a camera at all.
Remember i tried re-installing the original camera.apk that i backed up and for some
reason it wouldnt let me install it. Dunno if it had to do with permissions or just because its a system app.
But im glad i have camera360 i have alot of new features and filters Go filters!! haha
still if anyone has a resolution to installing the apk let us now im desperate!!!
U can't install system apps. U have to use something like root explorer, put it in system/apps folder, fix the apk permissions and reboot

It can and will be done, however everyone's idea of crapware varies. You can remove the apps you don't want by using RootExplorer and delete the unwanted .apks in /system/app
Or titanium backup if u don't know what's safe/unsafe to remove. You can freeze to test.
Sent from my HTC Ruby running Sense 3.6
thanks! good idea with titanium backup! and I tried /system/app but it says its read only, i know everything about permission and all and i just think its because the apps where running in back ground but ill try with titanium backup i remember it was easier last time i did it

If you are using RootExplorer, click the mount r/w icon up at the top right. You have to use a file explorer that supports changing read permissions to writeable. Otherwise Titanium Backup is a great and safe alternative.
What all IS safe to remove that won't break anything? I froze a bunch of stuff and then all hell broke loose and I had to reflash everything so I don't want to risk removing essential stuff again...
ill make a list if you guys want and post up

I always use this! You could always edit the text file to add or remove applications you don't want.
I just posted a list of everything that I have found is safe to remove here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25316549&postcount=87
I think system tuner is free or really cheap, in the one click part of the app you can backup, freeze, or uninstall system apps if you have root..
I use quickpic so I deleted the Gallery and didnt back it up. :crying:
I backed up lots of stuff but I "knew" I wouldn't need this, well little did I know it's a package deal
Anywhere to get this, rather not wipe/flash the ROM on again as I just did Alpha 7 from FJ ROM yesterday from Alpha 5.
Thanks very much

Just extract it from your ROMs zip file and put it in /system/app then change permissions to rw-r--r-- (644 I think) and reboot.
I cold send you mine, but I'm on ParanoidAndroid and I'm not sure if the app is the same. It will be Gallery.apk or Gallery2.apk depending on your ROM.
Just reflash your rom zip file. It won't do anything but replace the deleted stuff.
For future experiments, use Titanium Backup and freeze any app to see what else that app affects.
